SportsRe: Pele Vs Maradona: Who Is Better? by Iyineda(m): 3:16pm On Jun 29, 2010
Different types of players. Different times. Cannot just tell who is better than who without specifying in what aspect of the game.

Achievements? Pele, by a mile.
More spectacular? Maradona.

SportsRe: Half Of The German Machines Are Adopted by Iyineda(m): 12:20pm On Jun 29, 2010
Some of you really sound daft and unexposed.
All those players in the French and German national teams were either born or raised in their respective countries of adoption. Most of them are the 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation of immigrants. They are well integrated and all speak the language.
It's not like in athletics where one can just get naturalized to represent a country for the sake of taking part in the Olympics.
SportsRe: Brazil Vs Chile: [3 - 0] @ World Cup 2010 by Iyineda(m): 10:38am On Jun 29, 2010
My heart is now torn between the youthful Germans and the sambalistical Brazilians. The latter have started to play the way I always expected them to. If they score first, be rest assured they are coming out on top. Germany just has a new flair to their football that is irresistable.

May the best win! Go Ghana and Japan as well. grin
SportsRe: What Is Your Guestimate Of Nigerian Players True Age? by Iyineda(m): 10:21am On Jun 29, 2010
Nwankwo Kanu - 42

J J Okocha - 41

Ayila Yusuf - 37

Yakubu Aiyegbeni - 66

Sani Kaita - 38

Stanley Okoro - 32

Wilson Oruma - 47

Promise Isaac (former U-23 captain 2 years ago) - 34

Let's put it this way, all the players that come out from our domestic league are age cheats. The claimed average age of a local Nigerian player is 19. Most of them already went through 3 clubs before moving to Europe where they claim to be mere teenagers. Ogbeche, anyone? WTH?
SportsRe: Fifa Says Referee Was Right: Germany Vs England (see Pics) by Iyineda(m): 2:23pm On Jun 28, 2010
From best to 'least' best:

1. Instant Video Replay of a contentious call - each team can make at most 2 appeals per game (yes, there is need to limit the number of appeals just like in tennis).

2. A new ball embeded with a chip - sounds cool but kinda expensive. . .

3. Two extra goal-line referees. It has its limits though. undecided Ask Ajax Amsterdam during a match of the Europa League last season.

^ I'm not here to argue about something so futile but just so you know, the USA is a country of over 300 million people, not a continent. The USA is part of North America - a continent which includes Canada and Mexico.

Tut:
To the people who keep on saying, Ghanaian hate Nigerians, stop generalizing, it makes you sound very, and i hate using this word, uneducated. I am not denying that some Ghanaian hate Nigerians, but the key word here is SOME!, not all. take me for example, I am Ghanaian yet i do not hate Nigerians.
Now that we have that out of the way, you have to realize that what some of you view as hate is merely, friendly banter, another example of this well be this Nigerian kid i went to H.S with, we talked a lot of rubbish to each other, i cant recount how many times he said to me "Ghana must go" but at the end of the day he and i were still best of friends.

To the maker of this thread, the world will always view Saharan Africa as one big entity, and frankly i think it is about time we started viewing ourself as one big entity. We will not progress if we keep on fighting among ourself. What you posted, no matter your intentions will and has started a divide among us africans. There is nothing wrong with celebrating your fellow countries victory. Do you think the Caribbean islands did not rejoice when bolt broke records after records? just some food for thought.
Thank you for this insightful comment, Tut. I whole-heartedly agree with you. People tend to generalize, including myself. . . Just last week I wanted Ghana to crash out of the competition because I was angry with some Ghanaweb posters and their hate comments about Nigeria and cheekiness about Ghana being "The Hope of Africa". Sadly, this led me to put the whole of Ghana in that same bag. I was just being childish, I know that. And the irony is that it turns out that they were partly right - about Ghana's chances.

I will be supporting Ghana not just because it is an 'African team' but because I truly admire their natural flair and tactical discipline on the pitch. Milovan Rajevac has gracefully discarded the stereotypical depiction of undisciplined African teams. The Black Stars don't have household names and play like a unit, a very efficient one. Props to them. In all honesty, even though I wanted Nigeria to be the first African team to reach the semi finals, I will not be the least unhappy if this Ghanaian team made it before us.

Peace.

Disgusting comments. Shameful. The Germans are very successful and bright people. All you retain about them is their dark past. One that doesn't concern the present generation. Shame on you two.

Up Germany. You were never my favourites to begin but with such display of strength, speed and accuracy, I tip you to go all the way.

While I agree - to a certain extent - with the inclusion of Kalu Uche, that of Martins leaves me sceptical. He has lost his pace and his finishing seems to have disappeared (cf. huge miss against South Korea).

I guess I could add K. Uche in the 2012 squad but definitely not in the 2014 that's for sure.

Kanu Nwankwo, you have made your nation proud. We the youths of Nigeria honour you. You have inspired us so much. Regardless of your educational background, you have made us smile with you, cry for joy and sit in suspense watching you do your best. Thank You.

Apart from your skills on the pitch, i personally saw that you donated about 50 fire trucks to the Lagos State fire service.

Thank you.

Nigeria is known for corruption and 419 worldwide, but you brought us pride and respect. When you played your last for Nigeria, it was the best game we played in the tournament. You gave your all, infact you were instrumental in the goal we scored.

Thank You.
Best post hands down.

OLAADEGBU:
Tolerance is an insult to humans that the humanists are using indirectly. Instead of tolerating one another why not love one another? Telling the truth in love will go a long way in healing the wounds in the long run.
The truth. . . THAT is the problem. There isn't only one truth. People call "truth" what they deeply (want to) believe in. This truth you talk about is often subjective thus one-sided. The truth of the Christians versus that of the Muslims; Sunni versus Shia; Protestants versus Catholics.

Tolerance is a better remedy to the truth in this case because it accepts differences without having to agree/adopt them.

SportsRe: South Korean Coach Thanks Yakubu For Goal Miss by Iyineda(m): 3:16pm On Jun 24, 2010
I don't mind that it is South Korea that will be going to the 2nd round instead of Nigeria because they have a more than competitive and highly
technical team. Had it been Greece instead I would have been inconsolable.
SportsRe: How Is South Africa Hosting So Far? by Iyineda(m): 11:41am On Jun 24, 2010
Positives:
- The stadia and pitches: gorgeous
- A growing musical pattern in the use of the vuvuzelas
- Security doesn't seem to be an issue (anymore)
- A very festive ambiance (to be expected for such a worldwide event)
- The weather grin

Negatives:
- Half-empty stadia during certain matches of the caliber of a WC
- Some South African fans leaving the stadium 20 minutes before the end of the match between the Bafana Bafana and Uruguay.
SportsRe: Sacking Amodu Was A Mistake - Odemwingie by Iyineda(m): 11:15am On Jun 24, 2010
Osaze was my greatest letdown of the tournament. And his 360 u-turn about Amodu isn't helping. . .

I hope, really do hope he goes to a better club next season and improve in his end product. He needs to be more decisive, a true leader. In the next tournament Nigeria will be competing in the captaincy will be between him and Enyeama.

eddiebomba:
As far as I'm concerned, most of you on this thread are just desperate pundits hopelessly trying to deal with the failure of our team at the World Cup.
True. We are disappointed with the Eagles for their failure. So we are trying to look forward to better days. Any harm in that? undecided

eddiebomba:
How can you all be picking a team for the next tournament when none of us could even name a team for this year? Besides, you're all picking players who already exist - or are you telling me there will be no new players coming up between now and 2014? huh huh huh
12large: emmanuel ekpo and any new great talent that we can find from now till 2014;
osaze odemwingie and any new great talent we can find from now till 2014;
chinedu obasi if he can improve tremendously and any new great talent that we can find from now till 2014.
eddiebomba:
Or that you must carry old, tired legs to a tournament to do well - see what that's gotten us so far! Or that no player under 28 should make the team at all that year? huh huh  huh Instead of searching inside our selves for the reason for our failure, we're just looking for false hope and turning to escapism. sad sad THIS IS DESPERATE -  JUST PLAIN DESPERATE!!! sad sad sad angry angry angry
You are making it sound like we, the fans, are responisble for this debacle. We aren't the NFF.
I suggest you stop trying to sound too haughty. You'll be surprised how hard you can fall. . .
SportsRe: Exit Door Looms For All African Teams;Ghana please help save us from shame by Iyineda(m): 9:25pm On Jun 23, 2010
Well done, Black Stars of Ghana. cool

The Super Fowl Eagles need to learn your tactical discipline. Ghana's only major weakness is its lack of a top class finisher and a better goalie. The midfield is really good. I loved how Dede Ayew and Annan played. KPB was good too. Ghana should start with Muntari not Tagoe.

@OP

Nice topic, 12large. I don't think you'll catch me saying that too often about your posts. wink

Although it is difficult to forsee as far as 2014, I believe that if all remains equal, the following players must retire internationally:

- Kanu
- Yobo
- Ayila
- Afolabi (huge disappointment in this world cup) sad
- John Utaka
- Yakubu
- Etuhu

Mohammed, Kaita and Taiwo must seriously improve/be more consistent if they should smell the green jersey ever again.

I don't know much about our local players and most of the "U-20s" so I won't add any other players to those you have already listed. Nedum Onuoha and other foreign-based/born Nigerians who aren't too keen on being part of the national team should stay clear.

I will like to see the following players as the backbone of our 2014 squad:

Goalkeepers: Enyeama and Aiyenugba

Defenders:

Apam Onyekachi
Dele Adeleye
Uwa Echiejile (hoping for a successful spell for him in Portugal)
Chidi Odiah (lots of 'ifs' on this lad)

Midfielders:

John Mikel Obi
Ramon Azeez
Rabiu Ibrahim (if only he could fulfill the hype of his U-17 performances)
Haruna Lukman
Obiora Nwankwo
Emmanuel Ekpo
Ajagun (right spelling? heard good things about him bar disciplinary issues)

Forwards:

Sani Emmanuel (fingers crossed for this gem)
Stanley Okoro (if old age doesn't handicap him too much; yes, at age 24-25 he'll start to feel heavier, go figure)
Aictor Anichebe (probably THE star of the team in 4 years to come. . . hopefully)
Chinedu Obasi
Obinna Nsofor
Sone Aluko
Osaze Odemwingie (mainly for  experience, not a regular starter).

Prefered starting lineup and formation:

                  Enyeama(c)

            Apam        Adeleye
Odiah                                 Echiejile

                      Mikel
          Haruna         Azeez

    Okoro      Anichebe     Nsofor

Anywhoo, Nigeria hasn't yet made it to Brazil 2014 so we shouldn't get too ahead of ourselves. Fingers crossed. Up Eagles.
SportsRe: Yakubu: A New Word Added To Oxford English Dictionary by Iyineda(m): 8:41am On Jun 23, 2010
Chuck Norris is the man who is known for sneezing with his eyes wide open and his mouth closed.

Chuck Norris cheered for Nigeria at the World Cup. He decided to make Nigeria win their match by telepathically guiding each ball struck by a Nigerian striker.

In spite of all his efforts Yakubu somehow managed to put his shots wide. . . regardless of the distance from goal. Nigeria crashed out of the competition.

Hence, Yakubu is the 1st person on planet Earth to have pushed Chuck Norris to his limits.

Chuck Norris is now one of many fans who got Yakubued.
