Blood subs are good but not good enough for all blood indications. Simple. I had a woman come in last night with a PCV of 5%. Yes you heard right, 5%. She has chronic kidney disease and has been avoiding dialysis. Within 1 hour she has been transfused. Imagine if its a JW, she won't have been transfused by now cos we have to source for hemacel or iron dextran, which wouldn't be easily seen considering most pharmacies close on Sundays. And they are very costly. Around 50k. A bag of O negative costs 10k and itd be ready within 30 mins cos we have a blood bank.
There's ongoing research for better blood subs. Your JW organization isnt contributing a dime towards it but expects them to do magic. So yes, my patient(customer) has every right to demand anything he or she wants, but you can't always have what you want. Plain truth. If there's a better blood sub out there, no doc would insist on blood transfusion . It wouldn't make sense.
