A former Auditor-General of Borno State, Mallam Kaka Kyari, was among two persons who lost their lives during the University of Lagos convocation ceremonies that ended on Thursday. Kyari, it was learnt, was among dignitaries in the entourage that accompanied the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, to Lagos for his investiture as the UNILAG Chancellor. It was learnt that another man, whose identity had yet to be ascertained, was allegedly shot by security operatives at the university’s gate. It was learnt that Kyari died in a fire incident that occurred on Thursday at about 2am at the university’s guesthouse, while the other was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday night during an altercation with security operatives. One of our correspondents, who visited the guesthouse on Thursday, saw cleaners and officials of the university clearing the debris in one of the two-storey buildings where Kyari died. Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency were also seen on the guesthouse’s premises as of 2pm when the correspondent visited the university. Though the fire affected five rooms in the building, there were conflicting reports on the cause of the inferno. While one of the cleaners at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed it to sudden power surge, another source linked it to an unquenched cigarette butt used by one of the guests in the facility. The source said, “The incident happened on Thursday morning, but the activities accompanying the three-day convocation did not allow people to know of the incident. I also gathered that the remains of the deceased have been conveyed to Borno State for burial.” The Deputy Registrar/Head of Information Unit of the university, Mr. Toyin Adebule, confirmed the death of Kyari. In a statement on Thursday, he said the university regretted the incident and condoled with the family on the loss. The statement read, “The Management of the University of Lagos regrets to inform the general public that there was a fire incident at the university guesthouse at about 2am on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. “The fire occurred in the A Wing and affected rooms A12, A13 and A14. The university fire service was able to curtail the fire from spreading. The cause of the fire is being investigated. “Sadly, the incident claimed the life of one of our guests, Alhaji Kaka Kyari, a former Auditor General, Borno State, who was on the entourage of the chancellor and was laid to rest according to Islamic injunctions today, March 3, 2016 in Borno State. “The pro-chancellor, vice-chancellor, council members, management, staff and students of the University of Lagos commiserate with our chancellor and the people of Borno State on the demise of Alhaji Kaka Kyari.” The statement was however, silent on the second death. It was gathered that the new chancellor, who arrived at the university on Tuesday, came with a large entourage, including top government officials, state and federal lawmakers, as well as members of his traditional rulers’ council. At his installation on Thursday, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar; Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi; and the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, were among the royal fathers who graced the ceremony. Curiously, El-Kanemi marked his seventh year in office on Thursday (yesterday) as the Shehu of Borno. The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management. Agency, South West zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained. He said, “The Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, confirmed the fire incident, which involved members of delegation of Shehu of Borno at UNILAG. The deceased was a brother of the Shehu.” www.punchng.com/unilag-chancellors-brother-killed-during-convocation/ |
Understand that life is not a straight line. Life is not a set timeline of milestones. It is okay if you don’t finish school, get married, find a job that supports you, have a family, make money, and live comfortably all by this age, or that age. It’s okay if you do, as long as you understand that if you’re not married by 25, a Vice President by 30 or even happy, for that matter. The world isn’t going to condemn you. You are allowed to backtrack. You are allowed to figure out what inspires you. You are allowed time, and I think we often forget that. We choose a program right out of secondary school because the proper thing to do is to go straight to University. We choose a job right out of University, even if we didn’t love our program, because we just invested time into it. We go to that job every morning because we feel the need to support ourselves abundantly. We take the next step, and the next step, and the next step, thinking that we are fulfilling some checklist for life, and one day we wake up depressed. We wake up stressed out. We feel pressured and don’t know why. This is how you could ruin your life.... #You ruin your life by choosing the wrong person. What is it with our need to fast-track relationships? Why are we so enamoured with the idea of first becoming somebody rather than somebodies? Trust me when I say that a love bred out of convenience, a love that blossoms from the need to sleep beside someone, a love that caters to our need for attention rather than passion, is a love that will not inspire you at 6am when you roll over and embrace it. Strive to discover foundational love, the kind of relationship that motivates you to be a better man or woman, the kind of intimacy that is rare rather than right there. “But I don’t want to be alone,” we often exclaim. Be alone. Eat alone, take yourself on dates, sleep alone. In the midst of this you will learn about yourself. You will grow, you will figure out what inspires you, you will curate your own dreams, your own beliefs, your own stunning clarity, and when you do meet the person who makes your cells dance, you will be sure of it, because you are sure of yourself. #Wait for it..... Please, I urge you to wait for it, to fight for it, to make an effort for it if you have already found it, because it is the most beautiful thing your heart will experience. #You ruin your life by letting your past govern you.... It is common for certain things in life to happen to you. There will be heartbreak, confusion, days where you feel like you aren’t special or purposeful. There are moments that will stay with you, words that will stick. You cannot let these define you – they were simply moments, they were simply words. If you allow for every negative event in your life to outline how you view yourself, you will view the world around you negatively. You will miss out on opportunities because you didn’t get that promotion five years ago, convincing yourself that you were stupid. You will miss out on affection because you assumed your past love left you because you weren’t good enough, and now you don’t believe the man or the woman who urges you to believe you are. This is a cyclic, self-fulfilling prophecy. If you don’t allow yourself to move past what happened, what was said, what was felt, you will look at your future with that lens, and nothing will be able to breach that judgment. You will keep on justifying, reliving, and fueling a perception that shouldn’t have existed in the first place. #You ruin your life when you compare yourself to others..... The amount of Instagram followers you have does not decrease or increase your value. The amount of money in your bank account will not influence your compassion, your intelligence, or your happiness. The person who has two times more possessions than you does not have double the bliss, or double the merit We get caught up in what our friends are liking, who our significant others are following, and at the end of the day this not only ruins our lives, but it also ruins us. It creates within us this need to feel important, and in many cases we often put others down to achieve that. #You ruin your life by desensitizing yourself.... We are all afraid to say too much, to feel too deeply, to let people know what they mean to us. Caring is not synonymous with crazy. Expressing to someone how special they are to you will make you vulnerable. There is no denying that. However, that is nothing to be ashamed of. There is something breathtakingly beautiful in the moments of smaller magic that occur when you strip down and are honest with those who are important to you. Let that girl know that she inspires you. Tell your mother you love her in front of your friends. #Express, express, express.... Open yourself up, do not harden yourself to the world, and be bold in who, and how, you love. There is courage in that. #You ruin your life by tolerating it..... At the end of the day you should be excited to be alive. When you settle for anything less than what you innately desire, you destroy the possibility that lives inside of you, and in that way you cheat both yourself and the world of your potential. Do not let this happen to you. Do not ruin your life this way. Life and work, and life and love, are not irrespective of each other. They are intrinsically linked. We have to strive to do extraordinary work, we have to strive to find extraordinary love. Only then will we tap into an extraordinarily blissful life. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/03/how-you-could-ruin-your-life-without.html?m=1 |

The late arrival of Ese Oruru’s parents to the Police headquarters in Abuja is delaying the handing over of the girl to them. The parents were said to have left Yenagoa around 6am to Abuja where she will be handed over to them. Ese was said to have arrived the Force Headquarters around 12:55 pm on Tuesday. Journalists who seemed impatient with the delay were relocated from the 7th floor to the Peace Keeping Hall in the 5th floor where the IGP, Solomon Arase is expected to brief newsmen. Speaking on the reason for the delay, the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawale said: “The handing over is delayed because the girl’s parents are still on their way. Their bus took off around 6am from Yenagoa and we are still waiting for them to arrive.” www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/03/ese-oruru-arrives-police-headquarters.html?m=1

Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, has described the Buhari led government as a "one-chance bus". Fayose said this in a statement released by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, while reacting to the recent proclamation by Buhari and Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, that the government cannot be fulfill it's election promises. "Everything Buhari and his party promised Nigerians when they were looking for votes, they have denied and it won’t be a surprise if one day, Buhari comes out to even deny that he was elected on the platform of APC. Nigerians have now realised that they are inside a ‘One Chance Bus’ because Buhari and his APC have disowned their entire campaign promises by disowning their campaign document titled; ‘My Covenant with Nigerians. This document that they disowned in August, last year contained everything they promised Nigerians and if today, President Buhari chose faraway Qatar to announce that he won’t pay the N5,000 promised unemployed youths and Lai Mohammed is here in Nigeria saying no job was promised, no one should be surprised. Rather, Nigerians can only begin to pray that God, who rescued Daniel from den of lions will rescue us from this Buhari/APC one chance bus that we have entered,” he said. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/03/buharis-government-is-one-chance-bus.html?m=1

While speaking during a meeting in Saudi Arabia, President Buhari said he had a different opinion on the N5000 stipend his party promised to give to unemployed Nigerians when they come into power. Buhari said he would rather use the N5000 to repair the infrastructures in schools and empower mining and agriculture than to give the money to people who don't work; “This largesse of N5,000 for the unemployed, I have got a slightly different priority. I would rather do the infrastructure for the school that request them and empower agriculture, mining so that every able bodied person can go and get work instead of giving N5,000 to those who don’t work.” www.divineloveudorji..nl/2016/02/i-would-rather-invest-in-agriculture.html?m=1

A mob on Saturday set ablaze a. suspected robber at Funmilayo junction, Agege, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing a plasma television. SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the suspect, identified as One Mopol, was leaving Sura Odumakin Street, where he had allegedly stolen the TV set when he was caught around 6am by a resident. The resident was said to have raised the alarm, drawing the angry crowd to the scene. He was almost lynched when policemen from the Elere division arrived to rescue him. As the operatives were taking him away, he reportedly vowed to go after his assailants when he left the police custody. His statement was said to have drawn the ire of the mob that snatched him from the police. Our correspondent learnt that the mob stabbed him several times, tied him with a rope and dragged him to the junction where he was set ablaze. An eyewitness, Diran Oderinde, said the police later came in a van and took away his corpse, adding that the deceased was notorious for robbery in the community. Oderinde said, “I was woken up around 6.30am by the commotion caused by his arrest. One Mopol was a known robber in this community and he robbed with confidence. He stole the plasma television at Sura Odumakin in the Papa area but was caught by a resident when he was about to escape.” Another resident, who identified himself only as Taofiq, said One Mopol derived his name from his mode of operation. He said he raped a woman last week after dispossessing her of N30, 000. “He robbed alone with a cutlass. Last Saturday night, he robbed a woman selling food on Abiba Street and raped her. When One Mopol was caught this morning (Saturday), the woman came to the scene and discovered that he was the one who actually attacked her.” A mechanic, Tolu Ibrahim, said One Mopol’s death was a relief to residents, adding that hardly a week went by that he would not rob someone in the community. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, said his corpse had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy and urged the public to shun jungle justice. She said, “A robber who allegedly stole a plasma TV was burnt to death at Funmilayo area, Agege. Police got the information and moved to the scene but unfortunately the man had died. Investigation is on to unravel what actually transpired. The command will not tolerate jungle justice in any case, members of the public should endeavour to report such and normal procedure will be followed to get justice done.” www.punchng.com/robber-set-ablaze-for-stealing-plasma-tv/ |

Nigeria’s biggest indigenous telecoms operator, Globacom, has rubbished the reports circulating online that it has sacked one of its brand ambassadors, P-Square. It should be recalled that blogosphere was awash with reports of the purported sack of the pop duo during the week. It was alleged that the company fell out with one-half of the group, Peter, over his conduct during the grand finale of his sponsored reality show, Glo Dance With Peter late last year. Peter reportedly insulted officials of the company for failing to keep to their own side of the bargain regarding the competition. And when the honcho of the company, Dr. Mike Adenuga heard about the incident, he was furious, and declared that P-Square should be dropped as ambassadors. However, a trusted source in Glo revealed to Showtime that the telco is yet to take a decision on the fate of P-Square with the company. The source also stated that this situation is not peculiar to P-Square alone as the company is presently deliberating on whether or not to renew the contracts of the ambassadors whose deals are up for renewal. Speaking further, the source assured Showtime that a decision on the company’s brand ambassadors would be reached in a couple of days. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/glo-debunks-sacking-p-square-as-brand-ambassadors/

27-year-old Elena Smocot who was married was with her two children and her seven-year-old nephew in Barlad, Romania, when she noticed the striking resemblance between her new born baby boy and her lover. When she realized that her husband wasn’t the father of her newborn baby, she picked the infant up by his legs and swung him several times, repeatedly hitting his head against a furniture until the baby stopped crying. She then took her son outside, put him on the ground, and began to stomp on him repeatedly. Her four-year-old son and nephew heard the noises and ran outside, where they saw what Smocot was doing and ran to a neighbours’ house to tell them what she was doing. However, by the time they returned with neighbours and police, Smocot had used a broken roof tile and cut the infant in half with it. After she cut the infant up, she pulled out his intestines, put his body parts in the bathtub, and took a shower with them. Smocot was promptly arrested and charged with killing her baby in front of her four-year-old son and her nephew, aged seven. She told police that removing the child’s intestines had been difficult, and that it was easier removing a chicken’s intestines than her son's. She unemotionally told the Police that she had to pull twice to get her son's intestines out and had to repeatedly chop at the corpse. She told police that her horrific actions were triggered by observing how her newborn son bore a striking resemblance to the man she’d been having an affair with. In court, evidence was presented that Smocot may been experiencing severe depression, adding that in both 2010 and 2012 she had suffered from postnatal depression but the court rejected that plea stating that she knew what she was doing when she tortured and killed the innocent child. The court ruled that despite the possibility of postnatal depression, she was aware of her actions, thus guilty of murder. Smocot has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. www.divineloveudorji..nl/2016/02/photos-mum-kills-her-newborn-baby.html?m=1

UK-based Catholic priest, Fr. Albert Owie Ofere from Diocese of Warri, Delta State is on the way to write his name in gold, as he delves into music to further propagate the gospel of salvation to humanity. Fr. Ofere's debut album, “Every Day of My Life”, which has a collection of six tracks: God Dey My Side, When I Think, Where Were You, Jesus Lamb of God, God You are Good and “Oghene me Do” is a fusion of Afro pop and gospel music. He becomes the second catholic priest to delve into music after Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu. As a priest, Fr. Ofere said, “ I love singing and listening to music”, adding “while working in the UK as the Chaplain to the Nigerian Catholics in England and Wales, my love for music developed even more. I like to sing, music is part of the family, it's always been in the genes.” Explaining why he decided to do Afro pop, Ofere said, “It's because many people like to dance to Afro pop music and using it to glorify God would help to win more souls for Him.” Singing was something Fr. Ofere started doing when he "was a child" He admits that music runs in their family. “My dad was once a choirmaster. His younger brother, Fr. Richard Ofere who is now a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Benin sings a lot too. In fact, he was a choirmaster in the seminary. I never joined the choir but I was occasionally invited to lead some songs or choruses in my seminary choir. As a deacon, I sang a lot in Sacred Heart Cathedral Warri.” Ofere who was ordained in 2001, as a priest, said, he's not doing music because of what he would gain from it. Rather, “It's something I love doing.” He also revealed that his priesthood would ever come first before his love for music. Ofere has enlisted the services of award – winning director, Obi Emelonye and renowned comedian, Nkem Owoh who collaborated for a musical video that is currently trending on You Tube. The video which captures the essence of the sing-along tune was shot on locations in London, UK.” The songs are currently available online at iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby Ordained in 2001, as a priest, Fr Ofere is currently pastoring in a parish in London. President Muhammadu Buhari has said that with the decline in revenues from crude oil exports, Nigeria’s hope of economic resurgence lies in the rapid development of its agricultural and solid mineral resources. He said his administration was fully committed to increasing the productivity of Nigeria’s agriculture and solid minerals sectors to save the nation from the harsh effects of dwindling crude oil prices. According to a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke in Riyadh on Tuesday at a meeting he had with leading members of the Council of Saudi Arabia’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Inviting Saudi Arabian businessmen to invest in both agriculture and solid minerals, the President said that his administration would welcome greater foreign investment in support of its efforts to rapidly diversify the Nigerian economy. He regretted that the country had depended too much on crude oil exports to the neglect of other resources. www.punchng.com/nigerias-survival-depends-on-agric-buhari/ |
Two Lagos-based lawyers, Messrs Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, have said it is not their duty to produce a former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, who is on the run, before the Federal High Court in Lagos. There is a pending 40-count of alleged N45.9bn fraud against Tompolo and nine others before Justice Ibrahim Buba, where the suspects are expected to take their plea. But while his alleged accomplices had been attending court, Tompolo had repeatedly snubbed court summons issued on him, making the judge to issue two separate warrants for his arrest. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which charged Tompolo to court, had subsequently declared him wanted through a newspaper advertorial and also obtained a court order to confiscate all his assets pending when he will submit himself to the authority of the court. Oyetibo and Adegboruwa had, however, gone before the Court of Appeal, seeking to void the arrest warrant issued against their client. In a statement jointly signed by them on Wednesday, the two lawyers said it was the duty of the EFCC, and not theirs, to fish out Tompolo and bring him to court. The statement was issued in reaction to the editorial of a national daily (not The PUNCH), suggesting that the lawyers, who had been taking instructions from Tompolo, apparently knew where he was and ought to be mandated to produce him, since efforts by security agencies to arrest him had not yielded any result. The editorial had reportedly suggested that the lawyers owed Nigerians the duty to produce Tompolo, who is on the run, failure of which they ought to be disciplined by the court for professional misconduct. But the lawyers described such a suggestion as a misconception, stressing that they had not breached any law to warrant being sanctioned as suggested in the said editorial. They pointed to Paragraph 3 (b) of the Federal High Court Practice Direction 2013, which provided that, “On the date of first arraignment, the prosecutor must produce the accused person in court.” They berated the newspaper for sitting as a judge over a matter which was already before the court and advised it, for the sake of the future, to always “seek proper legal advice before embarking on passing judgment upon matters bordering on law and procedure so as to avoid falling into the type of grave error of judgment they committed on this occasion. “ They added that their client had the right to appeal any order of court against him, citing the case of Fawehinmi vs Attorney-General of Lagos State (1989), where the Court of Appeal held that accused persons were entitled in law to take their objection to the charge irrespective of the fact that they were not physically present in court. www.divineloveudorji..nl/2016/02/n459bn-fraud-we-cant-bring-tompolo-to.html?m=1

Kehinde Toba, a primary one pupil of Fasok Nursery and Primary School in the Ketu area of Lagos State, has slipped and fell into an open 25-foot latrine. Kehinde, who lost his father five years ago and had been staying with his uncle on Alapere Street, was walking out of the house on Wednesday around 7pm when he fell into the pit. His corpse was later discovered at about 5pm the next day, after a bricklayer had sealed up the pit without knowing that he was trapped in it. Policemen from the Alapere divison were said to have arrested the caretakers of the house, as tenants had fled for fear of being implicated. When PUNCH Metro visited the house on Friday, it was observed that the two-storeyed building was deserted, just as the latrine remained open. It was learnt that the victim and his siblings lived in a house at the back of the affected building. His guardian, Julius Adeniyi, said the two buildings shared the same exit doors. Adeniyi explained that Kehinde; his twin sister, Taiye; and elder brother, Seun; started living with him after their father died. He said, “Their mother is a trader, but she stays in the Seme, Badagry area of Lagos State. The three children live with me. “On Wednesday, Kehinde returned from school and started doing his homework along with his classmates.” Adeniyi said he went out to see a friend and when he returned around 7pm, Seun told him that his brother was missing. He said the family began looking around for him and when it was 10pm, they decided to alert the police to the development. “I informed his mother, who started crying. I was also confused because we could not tell what had become of him. His mother left Seme for our hometown in Ipokia, Ogun State, and after our family members there made some consultations, they were assured that the boy would be found,” he added. On how the victim was found, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the tenants of the affected house had emptied the latrine since January 2016. She explained that the old concrete slab, however, fell into the pit. She said, “A bricklayer made a new concrete slab and placed it beside the pit because they had yet to pay him for the job. “However, on Thursday, the tenants began to look for the bricklayer to cover up the latrine. “The bricklayer went and covered it up. He decided to take a break before cementing it. He went to a restaurant to eat and from there went to watch a football match at a viewing centre. “As he returned to cement the slab he had placed over the latrine, he remembered that he left his earphones at the restaurant. It was at the restaurant that he heard the news of the missing boy. “It was at this point that the bricklayer remembered seeing a pair of shoes inside the latrine he sealed.” The bricklayer reportedly told those who gave him the job about his discovery in the latrine, but was allegedly asked to get on with his job. The man, however, opened the slab and was said to have found the victim’s head showing under the old slab that fell into the latrine. The guardian, Adeniyi, reportedly passed out and was admitted to a private hospital, as the police were again invited to the scene. Although officials of the Lagos State Fire Service were invited to the scene, our correspondent learnt that residents brought out the corpse with a ladder. The police were said to have arrested the two caretakers in charge of the house, while the tenants in the house took to their heels. Kehinde’s elder brother, Seun, 10, while fighting back tears, said he could not believe that his brother was dead. “I just want them to produce my brother; tell the government to produce him,” he said. The spokesperson for the state fire service, Amodu Shakiru, confirmed the incident. He said, “At about 6pm, we received a call to a house on Alapere Street, Ketu. A boy of about eight years was recovered dead from a latrine of about 25-feet deep on the premises of a two-storeyed building. The corpse was handed over to the police from the Alapere division. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency were also there.” The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the police did not arrest anybody. www.punchng.com/missing-pupil-found-dead-in-latrine-tenants-flee/

According to Dan-Borno who shared these photos on twitter, this little boy was lured to a corner by some of his friends, who attacked him with a sharp object. One of them managed to cut his throat but thankfully it wasn't fatal. The quick intervention of an elderly person saved the young boy's life. Dan-Borno said attacks are becoming frequent and government has to start a re-orientation of the people in various IDP camps so that we don't unknowingly breed a new crop of insurgents whose minds have become radicalized because of their circumstances... www.lindaikejisblog.com/2016/02/young-boys-throat-cut-by-his-friends-at.html?m=1

Steven Pratt has pleaded guilty to killing his mother two days after he completed a 30-year prison sentence for killing a neighbour. In October of 2014, Steven Pratt was supposed to begin his life anew. He had served out a 30-year prison sentence and gone home to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where his family held a party to welcome him. But a violent history repeated itself all too soon. According to WashingtonPost, Pratt was 15 when he got into an argument with his next door neighbour, Michael Anderson. Court records show that Anderson was a father figure of sorts to Pratt. On October 11, 1984, he asked Pratt and his friends to vacate a hallway in their apartment building where they were noisily hanging out and smoking marijuana. Angered by Anderson’s request, Pratt retrieved a lead pipe. from his apartment and approached Anderson with it in hand. Anderson wrestled the pipe from Pratt’s grasp, striking him on the face. Then Pratt’s mother entered the room, and Anderson left. Hours later, Pratt knocked on the door of Anderson’s apartment. When the neighbour appeared, Pratt asked him if he recalled their fight earlier that day, then shot him dead. Pratt was tried as an adult for the murder and began serving his sentence at a maximum security prison. Thirty years later, he was released. Pratt was now 45 years old. When he got out, he returned to the Atlantic City neighbourhood where his 64-year-old mother, Gwendolyn Pratt resided, the Press of Atlantic City reported. Neighbours told the Press of Atlantic City that Gwendolyn Pratt was "kind and impeccably dressed." She took a 6am bus to work every day without fail. On the Sunday morning after Pratt’s release, police found Gwendolyn dead from blunt injuries to the head. Pratt was charged, and at his initial court appearance, he wept. "I have failed," Pratt told the judge, his voice barely audible, the Press of Atlantic City reported. "I don’t want a trial. I’m guilty." He officially pleaded guilty to manslaughter this week. He is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in prison again, according to the Associated Press. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/photo-man-kills-mother-2-days-after.html?m=1

Hundreds of girls and women freed from Boko Haram insurgents are facing stigmatisation and contempt from their family members and communities in Borno State, a United Nations report has revealed. The report, entitled, “Bad Blood”, focused on the perceptions of children and women exposed to sexual violence and Boko Haram attacks in northeast Nigeria. The United Nations Children Fund, International Alert, as well as other non-governmental groups released the report on Wednesday. More than 200 female pupils of the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, were kidnapped in 2014 in their dormitory. The report, which noted that some of the rescued girls and women were either pregnant or had children for Boko Haram members, added that they faced stigmatisation. “As they return, many face maginalisation, discrimination and rejection by family and community members due to social and cultural norms related to sexual violence. There is also the growing fear that some of these girls and women were radicalised in captivity. The children, who have been born of sexual violence, are at an even greater risk of rejection, abandonment and violence.” The report added that their husband had divorced many of the women survivors. It declared, “Victims’ husbands and fathers whose views and feelings carry more weight in highly patriarchal societies such as the one in Borno – also have mixed feelings about their wives and daughters. These feelings range from complete rejection and fear to acceptance. Some husbands are not willing to take their wives back and have divorced their wives on their return. However, other husbands have accepted their wives back into their lives. These views are shaped by perceptions on whether women and girls left willingly or if they were abducted.” Among other interventions, the researchers advised that the Federal Government to scale up psychological counselling for survivors. “The number of those in need and type of trauma suffered outstrip the services available, as admitted by government representatives. Also, given the fact that only small number of survivals have begun to return from captivity, compared with those who are still missing, it is likely that the available services will become even more overwhelmed by the returning population’s needs.” www.punchng.com/liberated-girls-in-borno-rejected-by-families-communities/ |
