The Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Gbenga Adaramola, has taken over the criminal case filed by the police against 31 students of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti. The students had protested on February 7, 2016 on accounts of alleged victimisation and highhandedness by the institution, including the recent hiking of tuition by the management. Last year, the university hiked the fees of its 400 Level medical students from N1.7m to N2.6m. ABUAD is a private university established by renowned lawyer, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN). Meanwhile, Adaramola entered his appearance at the resumed hearing of the trial on Friday. At the last sitting, Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye had adjourned the matter for legal advice following an application by the police prosecutor, Caleb Leramo. But at the resumed hearing on Friday, the DPP told the court that there were peace moves between parents and complainant. “If the peace deals failed, we would proceed with the trial at the next hearing,” he said. Responding, one of the defence counsel, Chris Omokhafe, accused the prosecution of deceiving parents with the submission. He expressed surprise that the DPP took over the prosecution after parents, according to him, have signed undertakings with the complainant. He urged the DPP to conclude his legal advice on time, hence, the hearing should commence. The students were accused of an alleged attempt to rob a branch of Wema Bank in the institution. The police alleged that the students on February 7 unlawfully committed the offence of arson by burning houses belonging to ABUAD University security staff and burglary of a boutique belonging to the wife of the ABUAD founder. The alleged offences contravene Section 443(a), 411(2) and 403 of the criminal code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2016. They are also facing a separate six-count charge including rioting, possession of firearms and malicious damage. The alleged offence contravenes Section 516,451 and 109 of the criminal Code, Cap C 16,Laws of Ekiti State 2012. Meanwhile, the Education Rights Campaign has called for the unconditional release of the arrested students. In a statement issued by ERC on Friday, its national coordinator, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, and national secretary, Michael Ogundele, called for a probe into the activities of the institution. PUNCH |
Davido believes his Sony Music Deal will go very well unlike the GOOD Music deal Don Jazzy and D’Banj signed with Kanye West. Davido first of all said he doesn’t want to be Don Jazzy, who was in the same room with 10 other producers including Kanye West. “I don’t want that to be me,” he told The Fader. “I wanna be that one African nigga, where it’s like, ‘Call that African nigga. Let’s get him on the hook.’” He also firmly believes his American background gives him an edge unlike Don Jazzy and D’Banj. “I can be in the club with Meek Mill and Future and be on a level with them,” he says. “I understand what they’re talking about. I know what the trap is. These are things that some of these other guys, they don’t have it. They can’t have these conversations with the rappers, so how can they have them with the (American) fans?” When asked if whether he thinks the world is ready for a Nigerian superstar, he said “Of course they’re ready,”. “They just might not know what that’s going to look like.” David also said he knows the kind of song that will be accepted in the US. “I know what kind of songs work. The music should have everything in it—Jamaican, African, American, everything. Something like Wizkid’s ‘Ojuelegba,’ it has a cool feel to it.” he added. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/davido-explains-why-he-can-be.html?m=1

Some medical students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, who were given courses contrary to their choices, have threatened to take the institution to court if it fails to reverse its decision within seven days, starting from Wednesday, February 17. They said they had petitioned the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Senate Committee on Education, the National Universities Commission, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, among others, on the development, saying they wanted favourable response before the ultimatum elapsed. The students had reportedly met the pass mark set by UNILAG for them to move to 200 level, but most of them were not admitted into the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba on the grounds that the quota given to the school was not sufficient. Some of the students and their parents on Thursday protested against the development at PUNCH Place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, displaying placards, some of which read, “JAMB, NUC, please save our future, save our career, save our destiny, come to our aid,” “This scam must stop, we want our courses at the college of medicine”, “Prof. Rahman Bello, you are a Pharaoh, allow our children to cross to the promised college.” The petition, which was signed by the principal solicitor for the aggrieved students, Jiti Ogunye, read in part, “We are solicitors to the students of the Faculty of Sciences in the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos State. “By their performances in their first year course work and examinations, they met the requirements by having a Cumulative Grade Point Average or cumulative score average of 50 in the groupings of courses for the Medicine and Surgery, Medical Laboratory, Nursing, and Physiotherapy departments; and a 2.00 CGPA for students in Pharmacology, Physiology and Radiography departments to advance to 200 level and first year in the UNILAG College of Medicine.” The petition stated further that the school had raised the requirements from 50 per cent and 2.0 CGPA to between 2.5 and 4.11 CGPA after the students had met the initial standards. “We demand that the university rescind its decision by allowing our clients to register for the various medical programmes in the College of Medicine and commence attendance of classes. If the university fails or refuses to accede to our demand within seven days of the delivery of this letter, we shall not hesitate to initiate a legal action against the University of Lagos in the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, for the judicial review of the administrative action.” One of the students, Emmanuel Adebiyi, who wanted to study medicine, said he could not settle for pharmacology, which he was given by the school. He said, “I got 56, 58 and 72 in the three required courses, but I could not advance to 200 level to further my education as a medical student. We are being denied our rights. We appealed to the President to look into this. I was given Pharmacology, which I did not bargain for.” A Medical Laboratory student, Samuel Sodipe, said he was eventually offered Botany, “which I don’t like.” Evelyn Ajisafe said the decision of the school had caused “disorientation” of the affected students, adding that they could not study what they did not apply for. “At the end of my 100 level, I had 3.9 CGPA, which is above the 2.00 required by the school. I had already bought some materials for the college of medicine. But when the list came out, 19 out of 49 students were selected. I was among those that met the requirements, but not shortlisted. The university said there was a specific quota which we were not told about from the beginning. I want the school authorities to give us our normal courses. We are psychologically disturbed.” One of the parents, who gave his name simply as Otunba Afolabi, said the claim by the VC that the affected students failed “is a blatant lie.” “I have been having sleepless nights since this issue started. The school is trying to destroy the destiny of these children. I wanted my daughter to study Agriculture, but she insisted that she wanted nursing. She tried her best and met the criteria – she had 60, 53 and 58. She had been receiving lectures when the list came out and her name was not there,” he added. The UNILAG spokesperson, Toyin Adebule, could not be reached for comment as his line rang out. A text message sent to his mobile phone had yet to be replied to as of time of filing this report. www.punchng.com/students-sue-unilag-changing-courses/ |

She rejected her appointment as the chairperson of the governing council of the Federal University, Dutse (FUD). The Northern activist, who is also an associate of the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, in a quarter-page newspaper advert published by a National Newspaper, rejected the appointment, stressing that she was not consulted. She claimed her appointment was made through newspaper and was constrained to make the rejection via the same medium. However, she pledged her continued support for Buhari and his administration. The advert reads: "I, Najatu Muhammad, wishes to thank you so much for considering me worthy of being appointed the chairperson of Dutse Federal University. It’s however, unfortunate that I was not consulted before the announcement in the media. I also regret that I have to use the same medium to announce that I can’t accept the appointment for some personal reasons. I will however remain an ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari in his effort in charting a new course for this country. A course that we pray will put this country back on the path of progress. I will also continue to support the presidents fight against corruption and other ills of this country. Betty Mbereko, a widowed woman is set to marry her son. The woman and her son say in love they are with each other and now they want to take their incestuous relationship to the next level and get married. What makes it worse is that the mother, Betty Mbereko is now six months pregnant and expecting her son’s child, and her grandchild. Betty, 40, has been a widow for the past 12 years and has been living with her 23-year-old son Farai Mbereko. She confirms that she is six month pregnant and that she has decided it is better to “marry” her son because she does not want to marry her late husband’s young brothers, whom she says are coveting her. Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier. She said after spending a lot of money sending Farai to school following the death of her husband, she felt she had a right to his money and no other woman was entitled to it. “Look, I strove alone to send my son to school and no one helped me. Now you see that my son is working and you accuse me of doing something wrong. Let me enjoy the products of my sweat,” she told the village court council. Farai said he was more than prepared to marry his mother and would pay off the ilobola (bride price) balance his father had left unpaid to his grandparents. “I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price and I am prepared to pay it off. It is better to publicise what is happening because people should know that I am the one who made my mother pregnant, otherwise they will accuse her of promiscuity,” he said. Local headman Nathan Muputirwa says: “We cannot allow this to happen in our village, mashura chaiwo aya, (This is a bad omen indeed). In the past they would have to be killed but today we cannot do it because we are afraid of the police.” Zimbabwe Chronicles... www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/photo-40-year-old-woman-set-to-marry.html?m=1

A ‘mad man’, Lanrewaju Jaiyeola, has been arrested with 22 Automated Teller Machine cards, two mobile phones and a power bank. He was nabbed by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on the Victoria Island area of Lagos State. The police said they were not convinced that Jaiyeola was actually mad, adding that initially, he was lucid before he started talking illogically. It was gathered that Jaiyeola, 39, was intercepted by the RRS operatives with a backpack on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road. One of the RRS men, who declined identification, said, “When we sighted him, he appeared like a mentally-ill man, but we invited him for interrogation. He responded normally to all our enquiries. “A few minutes into the interrogation, he started straying from the normal course of our enquiries and was not making sense at all. This raised further curiosity and we decided to search his backpack. “Inside the backpack, we found 22 ATM cards, one Nokia phone, a BlackBerry, a power bank, several bank tellers of recent bank transactions, and lots of invoices hidden in pieces of papers.” It was learnt that eight of the credit cards were still valid, and they had different names and banks. The officers took him to their base in Alausa, Ikeja. A policeman at the base told our correspondent that the suspect made “statements suggestive of somebody disguising as a mad man to perpetrate crime”. He said, “Initially, we noticed that he was mentally balanced because he was answering the questions posed to him adequately. But all of a sudden, he started sounding incoherent and illogical again. “While interrogating him, he threatened the Investigating Police Officer, saying, ‘I will make life unbearable for you if you don’t let me go’. “It was at this point we realised that possibly he might be enjoying the patronage of some highly-placed people whom we believe he was working for.” The police said the suspect was on their watch-list for about two weeks before he was arrested. The RRS Commander, Olatunji Disu, said Jaiyeola had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/photo-mad-man-arrested-with-22-atm.html?m=1

An Osogbo Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 19-year-old man, Kabiru Abdulahi, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing a mattress worth about N8,000. The police prosecutor, Mr. Abiodun Fagboyin, told the court that the offence committed by the teenager was contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Osun State. Abdulahi, who was arraigned before the magistrate, Olusola Aluko, pleaded guilty to one count of stealing. He burst into tears and told the court that he thought the mattress had been thrown out. Aluko, however, gave Abdulahi an option of N5,000 fine. The convict, who could not pay the fine, continued to cry for mercy. The convict was, however, lucky as a man passing by heard his cry and paid the fine. Abdulahi was released after the fine had been paid. Meanwhile, a housewife, Kafilat Mukaila, has accused her husband, Olaoye, of attempting to strangule her before the Osogbo Customary Court. No fewer than 10 persons were feared dead yesterday, in an outbreak of fresh hostilities between Fulani herdsmen and farmers at Tom-Anyiin and Tom-Ataan communities, Mbaya, Tombu in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. This is just as the Council Chairman, Godwin Iorsue, the Divisional Police Officer at Buruku, the Area Commander and other stakeholders in the area, on assessment tour of the communities, were ambushed and attacked by the herdsmen who had seized the area and sacked the inhabitants. Vanguard gathered that the renewed crisis has created a huge refugee situation in the area with over 300 people displaced from the affected communities and scores injured in the bloody clash. A source from one of the affected communities disclosed that the Fulani invaders stormed the communities late Saturday night, shooting sporadically and burning down houses, huts, food barn, farmland and economic trees. The source said: “As I speak with you, fighting is still raging in the affected communities. Although I cannot give you a precise figure of the dead, about 10 have been killed, many are missing and many others sustained injures.” Meanwhile, the Council Chairman, Mr. Godwin Iorsue, who spoke on phone, said that he had invited senior security officers to accompany him in assessing the situation, when they were ambushed and attacked by the herdsmen. Iorsue said: “It was only God that saved us. They were over 30 and well armed while we had only four armed police officers with us. Our cars were perforated with bullets.” When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, who confirmed the attack on the Council Chairman and his entourage, said no live was lost. Yamu said: “The people ran away from their communities in fear of a possible attack by Fulani herdsmen, but there were neither killing nor destruction of property in the area. “I can confirm that the DPO, the Area Commander, the Caretaker Council Chairman and selected stakeholders were attacked by suspected herdsmen when they visited to assess the situation in the area.” At press time, Vanguard gathered that fighting in the two communities was still raging. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/10-killed-300-displaced-dpo-council.html?m=1 |
Etisalat Nigeria has sued MTN Nigeria and Visafone Ltd, challenging MTN’s use of the 800megahertz (MHZ) spectrum following the acquisition of Visafone. Etisalat said it considered the action necessary to prevent the use of the spectrum by MTN at this time, as it will entrench the dominance of MTN in the retail data services market. “You will recall that MTN Nigeria was declared dominant by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2013 and remains dominant in the wholesale leased line and retail voice markets. The use of the 800MHz spectrum to deploy broadband services ahead of its competitors, particularly those who prior to MTNs purchase of Visafone, held similar spectrum bands as MTN, will further entrench MTN’s dominance in the Nigerian telecommunications sector,” Etisalat said in a statement confirmed by its Head of Media, Chineze Amanfo, yesterday. The telco said it had, in addition to the legal action and in line with Section 86 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, engaged the NCC to understand the basis of its decision to approve the acquisition. “As you are aware, the matter is already in court as such, we are restrained from commenting further on the matter,” the telco added. MTN had sued the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over the imposition of N780billion fine on it by the regulator for harbouring some 5.2million pre-registered subscriber identity module (SIM) cards on its network in violation of extant rules. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/etisalat-sues-mtn-over-visafone.html?m=1

The greed of 30-year-old Frank Chukwuneye and Abdullahi Zakari, 25, was on steroids, when they conspired to steal N450,000 from their employer, Tom Wu, a Chinese businessman based in Benin city, capital of Edo State. The evil duo of Chukwuneye and Zakari were employed three months ago by Wu, to serve respectively as his interpreter and security guard. While Chukwuneye was placed on a monthly salary of N70,000, the Chinese paid Zakari N30,000 per month. He did so regularly. But demon of greed took hold of their minds and the seed of conspiracy was sown. During the yuletide period, on December 29, Wu withdrew N450,000 from the bank. Upon reaching home, he asked Chukwuneye to put it on the top of the drawer in his bedroom. Later he went out with Chukwuneye. Meanwhile, as Sunday Sun correspondent gathered from the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, Chukwuneye had conspired with Zakari to steal the money. He gave Zakari the spare key to the bedroom of Wu and told him where to find the money. To ensure his cooperation, he also promised to give him N100,000, and this sealed the conspiracy. Narrating what happened next, Zakari told Sunday Sun in an interview at the headquarters of the State Criminal Investigation Department, where he and Chuwkuneye are being held in custody, as investigation progresses: “On December 30, 2015 when our Chinese master went out, I went to his bedroom, opened it with the key Frank gave me. I saw the N450,000 where they kept the money on the drawer. I took the N450,000, put in the hollow of a loudspeaker and then set the house on fire.” Upon learning that his house was on fire, Wu rushed back home. Suspecting foul play, he went to Ugbor Police Station, accompanied by Chukwuneye, to make a formal report to the police. The case was then transferred to the State CID Benin City, which commenced investigation immediately. Ezike told Sunday Sun that the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chukwudi Ariekpare, SCID, told the officer-in-charge of general investigation, Supol Stella Ebikefe (SP), to dispatch a team of detectives. In course of investigation, the trail led to the two employees. When properly questioned, they spilled the beans, confessed to the crime, and gave graphic details of the roles played by each of them. Chukwuneye in his confessional statement admitted that he was the mastermind of the evil act. Expectedly, the victim, Wu, felt deeply betrayed by the two men he employed. He said: “I was shocked to learn that the two Nigerians I employed and made them comfortable and also paid them regularly committed the crime. I employed Frank as my interpreter and gave him everything he wanted, yet he betrayed me. He was the only person who knew that I brought N450,000 from the bank and put it in my bedroom. I want justice to be done and the police to recover my money from them.” Ezike assured that the suspects would be charged to court soon. www.divineloveudorji..co.ke/2016/02/photo-nigerian-employees-set-chinese.html?m=1
