One thing I've come to observe is that it's easier to move within an industry than across industries, and for some of us that start from high-worth industries, naturally, it places a limit on where you can move to.
Career › Re: Welcome To My Office by Jarus(m): 3:52pm On Mar 28, 2012
Recently, a lot of things have been running in my mind.

Government? Remain in this industry? Move to service industry, especially Financial service?

Sometimes, I see myself as fit for the public sector. I have long eyed CBN, DMO etc, but the interest is just waning, principally for pay disparities.

Financial service industry is another industry I look forward to, but with practically no relevant experience in the industry, and surely not ready for entry level positions, the window is appearing not wide opened.

Recently,I'm beginning to ask myself: you've been working for 4 years, you still don't appear decided as to what you want, isn't that a recipe for career failure?

So barring any further change of mind, I think I've decided to just be in this industry and be a professional Accountant/Economist with oil and gas bias. Even if I have to move from my current workplace, it has to be within the industry.

That was why I beamed my searchlight on opportunities within the sector in the last half of last year and I'm already at advanced selection stage(having crossed several stages of interview) with 2 companies within the industry.

The first is a downstream company like my current place of work, and our biggest competitor in that sector. If I move to the place, it will be like moving from Real Madrid to Barcelona. But the biggest obstacle may be the pay I'm asking for. From my inquiries with their staff, I doubt they can offer me what I currently earn here, not to talk of granting my higher pay demand, which is almost equal to what a manager earns there. But we are still in it sha.

The second is an independent player in the upstream, one of those medium-size E&P firms that rake in million dollars coolly without much noise, practically unknown except you're in the upstream industry. We are currently negotiating pay and my request is 4m on top of my current pay here. The negotiation is on.

So if any of these work out, I may be welcoming you guys to a new office in few weeks time, if not I remain oyb's messenger here! lol

I hate Ghana and I don't hide it. They caused it, I joined their forum, ghanaweb.com (football section) in 2009 and I saw the hatred for Nigeria that goes on there. These guys hate Nigeria and Nigerians(very glaring), except few of tehm of course. Any wonder their singers composed anti-Nigeria songs?

The interesting thing is that Nigerians don't care about them. I can't remember Nigerians online opening threads to bash Ghanaians.

ifyalways: I was at GTB ajose adeogun this morning to do some transactions.Teller took my cash, just about to credit my account and they asked everyone out.The fire alarm was up and belling.we've been all out, bankers and clients for the past 30 minutes.

Pissed is an under statement,I held on to the cashier outside and made her sign that she took a certain amount of money from me first.Naija sef and there is no sign of fire brigade of whatever, just scaring people for nothing. . .or so it appears
Henhen, so we were in that room together? Surprised!

I was also about handing my cash to the cashier when the pandemonium started. Actually thought the 'boys' had come! I was relieved when I heard it was just a fire alarm, but pissed off too. I had to call my friend, a staff in that branch, and handed over the cash and completed slip to him to help complete the transaction when they resumed.

Politics › Re: Kano Vs Kaduna; Business And Organization by Jarus(m): 8:56pm On Mar 26, 2012
Kaduna is like the Lagos of the North - more liberal, cosmopolitan. It also used to be the capital of old northern region, so it is the political capital of the north where vital political meetings are held.

Kano is bigger and more populous, conservative, commercial and representative of typical Hausa tradition/culture than Kaduna.

Why Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Should Be the Next Head of the World Bank

March 23, 2012

The US had a chance to lead.  It abdicated that chance to play domestic politics and put forward a US nominee who is manifestly less qualified to be head of the World Bank than the alternative candidate nominated by African countries: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The World Bank is a full-service development institutions that provides loans and grants and development advice to promote development, which is the transformation of countries towards prosperous economies that support broad based improvements in material well-being, democratic polities that respect citizen rights and respond to citizen demands, and capable administrations that allow governments to carry out their core functions—law and order, education, macro-economic management, health, infrastructure, regulation, security.

Therefore an ideal candidate should have:

some experience in government and the process of policy-making (as the World Bank’s clients are all governments),

some acquaintance with economic policy and policy making—including the tough choices like allocation of resources across uses,

some knowledge of finance (it is, after all, a bank that makes income from lending money),

perhaps some management experience in a multilateral organization.

Exposure to the breadth of development issues.

Experience in Government. Ngozi has been the Minister of Finance of Nigeria, twice.  If one had to name a tough job in the world, I think that would be it.  She did it first from 2003 to 2006 and by all accounts handled a very tough situation—including tackling entrenched corruption—in an admirable way.   Jim (to be fair we’ll use first names for both) has no experience in government.  He has been engaged in development as an academic and through NGOs.

Advantage Ngozi.

Acquaintance with Economic Policy. Ngozi has had training in economic development from MIT.  Jim has been trained as doctor and anthropologist.  Ngozi has been a Minister of Finance making budget allocations and dealt with the entire array of economic policies to promote growth and prosperity.  Jim has worked exclusively on health issues (rightly, as he is a physician) and never been in position of responsibility about economic policy.  Health was just one of many sectors for which Ngozi had to allocate budgets and promote performance.

Advantage Ngozi.

Knowledge of Finance. Ngozi has been a Minister of Finance as such, among other things, she led the Paris Club negotiations that led to billions of dollars debt relief for Nigeria.  Jim has no demonstrable experience in finance, banking, the private sector.

Advantage Ngozi.

Management Experience. From 2007 to 2011 Ngozi was a Managing Director of the World Bank.  She has therefore in-depth experience running a large and complex multi-lateral organization.  Jim from 2004 to 2006 was director of WHO’s HIV/AIDS department and so has some experience in a multilateral organization.  Jim has also for two years been president of an American university.  But while Ngozi was near the top of a large organization dealing with all development issues Jim was responsible for one disease in an organization that does only health.

Advantage Ngozi.

Breadth of exposure. There is a massive difference between doing development work and doing charity work to mitigate the consequences of the lack of development.  Ngozi has done development work in many settings and in many positions both in Nigeria and within the World Bank.  Jim deserves praise for having devoted his time, attention and expertise in medicine to improve the health care for people in the developing world—which is certainly one component of development—but his development experience is limited to one sector.

Advantage Ngozi.

Passport. Jim holds an American passport.  Ngozi is a Nigerian woman.

Advantage Jim.

In this day and age, is that still really all it takes?

Family › Re: How Was Your First Year Of Marriage? by Jarus(m): 11:30am On Mar 23, 2012
Hmmmnnn, On January 2nd this year, Mr and Mrs Jarus marked their 1 year anniversary.

First one year was full of mixed feelings. First, our courtship was quite short, and add to that the fact that we were not living together in our first 6 months(she was in the middle of her NYSC when we did the Nikka, so had to go back to her state of posting) so she didnt really know me that much. So she spent few months getting to know me better. I wasn't actually as gentle as she thought. lol. But she later understood me more. When she was serving, I used to go visit her on weekends, and some other weekends, she did come to Lagos. The day I went to pick her after she passed out from NYSC was perhaps our happiest day.

Even with its lows, marriage is still very interesting and I realized I underrated it before. You have someone you share your problems with, things you can't tell your friends.
I wasn't exactly selective in foods before, but with a great cook as wife, I have become so used to great delicacies that I have begun to criticize (others') foods. lol

Add to that the jokes and pranks at home. Since I married, I have been closing timely (5pm) and dont go to work on weekends again.

Of course, there are low sides, very lowlights, but I wont mention that in public forum here. lol

She used to seriously complain about my NL addiction in our early months, including seizing my phones at times, but ever since I inducted here into NL, she is probably more present on NL(as unregistered guest, usually visiting family, health and sometimes politics) than me in the last few months. lol

But altogether, marriage is fantastic; of course, if you meet a great partner. We both learned a lot in the first year.

However like people have mentioned up there, the 'exact date and time' post reference needs to be brought back, this '1 year and 2 months ago' thing is not ok.

Also, signatures add fun to the posts.

Business › Re: What Was Your Worst Experience With Our Nigerian Banks? by Jarus(m): 10:33pm On Mar 18, 2012
Rushing to Minna to go attend to one private thing one Saturday. Didn't want to carry cash with me, so withdrew at MMA2 just what I needed to pay for my flight Lagos-Abuja. Landed @ Abuja and paid for Taxi to drop me @ Minna Motor Park in Utako, Abuja. Paid with my last money. Entered Zenith bank in Utako to withdraw money to continue Abuja-Minna road journey only for GTB to have network problem! My head was cracking. For more than 2 hours, no network, and that was the only ATM I took along. I was sweating.I was mad at my friends in GTB calling all of them and lamenting what their bank was making me experience in Abuja as if na their papa get GTB. Called all my friends in Abuja, they were out of town on Christmas break(it was Dec 26 I think). I had to swallow pride to collect 1k from the Zenith bank security.guy that saw how disturbed I was. By the time I got to Minna, I went to GT ATM straight and the network was back. I loaded myself with the maximum withdrawable amount that afternoon, cos I had learnt my lesson.

Cos I rushed straight to Abuja airport on my way from Minna next day, I couldn't go to Zenith to refund that security. When next I went to that side of Abuja, more than one year later, I branched in that Zenith branch to give the security guy his 1k back and added some gift. Very great ibo guy.

It was the nastiest experience I had with a bank.
Business › Re: At What Age Should One Be A Millionaire? by Jarus(m): 10:06pm On Mar 18, 2012
Even if in Naira, I think having 1 million Naira in bank a/c doesnt make one a millionaire yet. A millionaire must have several millions in cash and assets, or net worth. Also, the millions should be stable and not having 3m today and broke over next 3 months. And very comfortable with millions.

In the above sense, I am clearly not a millionaire. But if we are talking about owning first million, then maybe I did that at 26. And my education wasn't fast, graduated @ 24.

I however believe it's very possible to be a self-made millionaire @ 27. A focused graduate that gets a good job @ 21-22 can do wonders by 27. I have a bros that finished school @ 20 and got a good job immediately. By 27, he was already a proud owner of two houses and heavy investments in stocks and by 30 added a 3rd in VI! a comfortable millionaire by Naira standard. A focused young chap can be one, but most of us lavish our incomes on ostentatious items and needless expenses, most times even borrowing to maintain the lifestyle.
Christianity Etc › Re: Are Spiritual Husbands Real? by Jarus(m): 9:53am On Mar 17, 2012
Having studied the world of the Jinns according to Islamic texts, I believe in the existence of the so-called spiritual husband. They are nothing but Jinns. Apart from 'spiritual husband' phenomenon they interfere in human's lives in a number of other ways. It used to be very mysterious to me before but after researching on it for more than 4 years, reading and speaking to people/scholars, I am convinced it is Jinn at work.

I have witnessed Islamic exorcism and spoken with Islamic exorcists who have cast the jinns out of the possessed people. It is very real.

Tribalizing the issue again.

I have argued on NL here about 2 years ago, when Al-Hassan and Loius Ojukwu were alive, Dantata was almost unanimously recognized as the richest West African then. L. Ojukwu lived longer so may have been the richest after Dantata died. But what is known from history is that Al-Hassan Dantata was the richest Nigerian of his generation. No need to tribalize issue, it's a fact, just as Abiola was undisputably regarded as Nigeria's richest in his own time too.

Probably in their generations:
Al-Hassan Dantata
Loius Ojukwu
Aminu Dantata
M.K.O Abiola
Aliko Dangote

It's a pity that even when the hardwork, commitment and vision of these men are clearly stated in the write-ups, some people still believe some 'military head of state' was the one that made them.
Can't we for once believe in this country that wealth can still be acquired through hardwork?

Dangote got 500k in 1978 and was already a multi-millionaire in the 90's before ever coming across government, yet some people dismiss him as just an opportunist with no business sense. I find this mentality among Nigerians annoying.
