Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Salary Vs Self Employment, Which Do You Prefer by Jarus(m): 1:57pm On Dec 06, 2011
okpara ugo:
Self employment is the way to riches. I left my well paid job this year and my friends were like asking me, wont u look for another job? I said no.

Am surprised that within 5 months, am making more than my monthly salary. But I made initial mistakes while switching from paid employment to self employment like over-spending on office space. Gradually, everything is falling into shape. The first 3months were very discouraging anyway. I also did marathon savings for Two and half yrs while in paid employment in preparation. Not everybody has such courage but that's the best thing anyone can do for himself.

The most important gain to me is that I decide when to wake up from bed every morning and when to leave or be in my office. Am not under anybody's watch.

By the time, I remain self employed for 1yr, am sure I will double or triple my salary. No jokes.
Good of you. although only half of people that take this step will have same story to tell.

however, at least you did paid job for sometime and saved to start your own biz. some self-employment theorists will tell fresh graduates not to look for job at all but should go on self-employment straight, as if they will be the one to give the poor men money to self-employ.

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Salary Vs Self Employment, Which Do You Prefer by Jarus(m): 11:59am On Dec 06, 2011
Self-employment is good, in fact very good, but I'm afraid it's been overrated with all these shouts about it and continuous demonization of salaried jobs.

Some questions:

1, Where do you get capital to start your business?
2, Where do you get experience to manage your business? Or you think you can just graduate from school and run a business like that?
3, Where do you get the network to sustain your business?
4, What do you fall back to if, just if, the business fails?
5, How many people will trust you - at least in the beginning - if they know you've not been tested somewhere else before?
Questions, questions and more questions

Truth is less than 15% of self-employed people actually made it without being on someone else's employ before.
Most of them started as salaried people and even there is nothing absolutely wrong in spending all your career till retirement as salaried person. A salaried person that rises to become a bank CEO, will be better off than many self-employed business owners.

There is also the risk factor. Some people are just risk-averse and cannot take all the risks associated with owning the business.

Instead of demonizing paid employment, I think emphasis should be on how to strike a balance - invest your income while under paid employment(preparing for rainy day); if possible, run your private biz while still on another man's employ and break out when you get your footing; if you can't get paid job at all, then try strive your way to identify self-employment opportunities, rather than die looking for paid job.

I, Jarus, the co-moderator of the largest and most popular section in the largest online forum in Africa, a detribalized Yoruba man, a proud Kwaran but first a Nigerian, hereby nominate AFAM4EVA because I consider him the man, though proudly Igbo, that will be a good negotiator with other tribes, for the good of the Igbo race.

Egbon mii, you read my thoughts exactly at the bold part. I propose a new candidate who is proBeaf and every other progressive Beaf will endorse and vote for him. Lets accept Beaf is out of the game and so nominating him gives room for the other group lol. to win.
Who do we set-up?
Aburo mi to cute, you know my own political leaning is not to this your side cheesy, but we are guaranteeing level field. This being politics section, political intrigues(endorsements and even campaigns grin) are part of the game - they make the game fun.

Politics › Nairaland Politics Section Hall Of Fame/shame - 2011 Induction by Jarus(op): 9:54am On Dec 05, 2011
Ladies and Gentlemen,
If you recall last year, we started our maiden edition of Nairaland Politics Section Hall of Fame/Shame.
It's in 2 phases - nomination and voting. At the end of the process, Nairalanders inducted MR SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI into its HALL OF FAME and THE CABAL(you remember them?) into its HALL OF SHAME:

Here are the threads for the exercise:
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-565376.32.html#msg7353190
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-570031.0.html
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-570036.0.html

This year we are inducting 2 more people, one into each category:

SOME CRITERIA:
-The person must be a Nigerian
-He must be a public figure or political personality
-His wrong or bad doing must have been discussed on Nairaland Politics Section here
-The outstanding/shameful act must have been done in 2011. So pls don't tell us you are nominating IBB because he kiled Dele Giwa or you are nominating Nuhu Ribadu because he arrested Tafa Balogun.
-No arbitrariness please. Tell us what he/she did to deserve the nomination and back up with link or past thread.

STAGE 1: Nomination (5-19 December, 2011)
STAGE 2: Poll for the top 3 nominated (19-31 December, 2011)

Please let's bolden our nominations for ease of compiling.

Start nominating.
Politics › Re: *~ Gbawe Voted The Politics Section Poster Of The Year *~ Congratulations by Jarus(op): 9:34am On Dec 05, 2011
NOMINATION MONITOR: (After day 4)
1, Gbawe - 10
2, Katsumoto - 5
3, GenBuahri - 4
4, Onlytruth - 3
5, Ekt bear - 2
6, Jakumo - 1
7, egift - 1
8, Okadaman - 1
9, Jmaine - 1
10, Goldieluks - 1
11, Nasoeb - 1
12, Lucenzo - 1
13, Musiwa - 1
14, Buzugee - 1
15, Ileke Idi - 1 (subject to passing 'ban/ 2-warning' check)

Only 3 will make it to the final poll; Who will be the three? Can we conclude that Gbawe is safe? Who will join him? Any 2 of Katsumoto, GenBuhari and Onlytruth appear feasible? Or can ekt bear stage a surprise comeback? Or will any of the 'oners' shock us? Or is it going to be a case of the masquerades that performed early but will end up as spectators? Who will be the late masquerade in the offing?

You decide!

Keep nominating - 10 days to go

Politics › Re: *~ Gbawe Voted The Politics Section Poster Of The Year *~ Congratulations by Jarus(op): 7:17am On Dec 05, 2011
Interesting and intriguing.
With the support Beaf is getting here, if he comes here to endorse somebody, the Gbawe people may be in for surprise! Will Beaf endorse another person? Will the pro-Beaf people team up and go for a consensus candidate to show their power? Or will they stand by their votes for BeAf which will end up wasting?

Meanwhile Katsumoto continues to garner nominations while GenBuhari may be the dark horse.

Or will an entirely new nominee alter the equation?

Only 3 will make it to the polls.

We are watching.

Politics › Re: *~ Gbawe Voted The Politics Section Poster Of The Year *~ Congratulations by Jarus(op): 7:36am On Dec 04, 2011
If. Beaf had not been disqualified by the ban rule, it would have been a straight fight between him and Gbawe. The opposition for gbawe; the PDP/GEJ for Beaf and the intellectuals/neutrals for Katsumoto. But now that Beaf is out of equation, who will the pro-Govt nairaland pundits present?

This is politics section, so high level intrigues and gameplans will play out, but we Mods guarantee equal playing ground for all. Just play within our rules.
Nairaland General › Re: *~ Ngodus Voted nairaland/Gen Section Poster Of The Year *~ Congratulations!!! by Jarus(m): 6:00am On Dec 04, 2011
You are free to nominate yourself but provide justification. After all your one vote cannot win you the award, others have to agree with you by also nominating/voting for you to stand a chance of winning.
