Honestly, this man has been extremely lucky as far as I can see, with offers coming here and there. I have actually seen many worse cases(like needing paltry money for urgent surgery) that didn't get this kind of help offers.

Chaircover,
I'll PM you an email address or mobile no to send the account details I will remit your money back into tomorrow. Accessing NL from phone now, can't PM.

All this talk about it's harder to make a first class in my school is rather unfortunate. First class in any institution requires a certain level of hard work and determination.
That has always been my conviction too.
Even if other factors come to you advantage/disadvantage, more than those factors a certain level of hardwork and determination is basic.

Were you(or your rep) the one that paid the 10,000 into my a/c from Ojodu?

It's annoying. This is why I personally look very well before assisting.

This couples' attitude is sickening.

In an case, I suggest we go ahead with the contributions. We get news of the needy on regular basis on NL here, especially those needing money for hospital surgeries. We can be on the look out for that, or better still go give a genuine motherless babies home in December, as jay bee suggested.

We can even go ahead to have a Nairaland foundation, where, within our modest means, we will be giving such assistance from time to time.

If we can raise 800k on Nairaland here to do radio jingles for a presidential candidate earlier this year, we should also be able to help the needy, if our leaders are not doing their job.

stepo707:
The man who is raising his family under the bridge at Cele bus stop, Lagos, Monday Obuh has rejected an offer from a P.M.NEWS reader in the United Kingdom who offered him a free accommodation.
Monday Obuh, his two-year old boy and pregnant wife who are still living under the bridge along Oshodi-Apapa expressway also rejected the offer of a room by the U.K-based kind-hearted Nigerian who sent money to his nephew in Lagos and asked him to do everything possible to get Obuh and his family an accommodation,
Instead, Obuh said he preferred to be given money by the anonymous donour. He is asking for N100,000 cash instead of the room.
When the good Nigerian read the couple’s story on line in P.M.NEWS last Friday, he immediately offered Monday Obuh and his family a self-contained apartment.  But after inspecting the house, Obuh rejected it on the ground that a detached house (flat) will not afford him the opportunity to mix freely with the people.
The U.K. based Nigerian then offered Obuh and his family a room at 13, Church Street, Off Gbajobi Bus Stop, Itele Road, Ota, Ogun State. Obuh again rejected the offer.
He demanded for N100,000 cash instead.
Obuh also demanded for a business he could do to sustain his family. To this request, a lady banker based in Lagos who also craved anonymity, was moved by the family’s plight and offered to assist him.  The young lady bought buckets, stove and other things for Obuh.
Obuh and the lady later visited a kiosk around Itele Road, Ota where he could be selling the building materials. Obuh again rejected the offer to stay at Ota and demanded for cash.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS this morning, the U.K. based Nigeria expressed shock that Obuh could reject a genuine offer to assist his family.
“As soon as I read his story in P.M.NEWS on Friday, I became restless. I then got in touch with my nephew in Lagos to liaise with P.M.NEWS.
“I arranged to pay for a room to settle his family because of the child and the pregnant wife. I had wanted to buy a mattress, stove and other materials to ensure that the family can live a normal life again. Thereafter, I intend to empower him by giving him money to start a business. He told my nephew he wanted to sell building materials, I intend to assist him on that after he might have settled down.
With Obuh’s insistence that he should be given money and his preference to continue living under the bridge, the kind Nigerian said he was helpless.
Also speaking on phone today, the lady banker who had offered to assist Obuh regretted that Obuh mistook her gesture an opportunity to collect money from people, using him.
She said: “Yesterday, I used my ATM to withdraw money. I gave him N9,000 for mattress and another N4,000 for out of pocket expenses. But he thought I was giving him part of the money donated by people to him.
“He demanded for N100,000 saying that if I failed to give him, he was ready to back out of the  arrangement.  He said his helpers should come to his abode under the Cele bridge.”
The banker expressed disgust about Obuh’s attack on her integrity saying, “he has a criminal mind. He has an ulterior motive. He insisted the money I gave him was not enough, insisting on N100,000.”
This changing turn of things by the day is actually frustrating the whole thing o.

Guys, what do we make of this latest, disturbing story?
Politics › Re: Why Was Prof. Attahiru Jega Not On The Awards List. by Jarus(m): 3:23pm On Nov 17, 2011
Let's be reasonable in our criticisms. If Jega were to be given honours, we will say GEJ is only rewarding him for rigging elections for him.

I fully support Jega not being given now. Maybe when he leaves office.

I personally think for those in public service, they should not be give national awards until after their tenure, when they can be assessed.

Unlike the other regions, Igbos on the average, basically have a higher standard of living. You don't find extreme poverty amongst them like you find in other places.
I cannot but agree with this. It is hard to come across a completely wretched Ibo person.

Hi OAM4J et al,
What's the situation? Are we going ahead?
Is r321 taking up the challenge of receiving the contributions?
If not, I can take up the challenge. I can PM my a/c details to OAM4J to PM to all interested to make the contributions into, and alongside another Lagos-based lander, go ahead to donate the contribution, possibly inviting media to cover it.

I have little experience in this, having coordinated a 800k campaign funds for Buhari/Bakare Nairalanders earlier this year.

Education › Re: 62 Graduates Bag First Class In UNIBEN by Jarus(m): 8:44am On Nov 17, 2011
Whether private or Federal or state, I personally believe First class is earned and will not condemn any school for producing many First Class. From my observation, I think First Class corresponds to the conduciveness of learning environment. This is why Private universities tend to produce more, followed by Federal and then State in that order. This is the same reason why Top schools even in the West produce in high numbers equivalents of First Class.

In private unis, they are programmed to just read, eat, go to church/mosque, water/electricity taken care of, what to eat not something to worry about. An average brilliant student will excel under this circumstance.

Federal Unis(esp First Generation ones) may be free, but most lecturers, having seen it all, are usually liberal. In my uni(federal, 1st generation) for example, though very free, we hardly worried about water/electricity and other distractions, so the serious ones have all what it takes to excel. Add stiff competition among the brightests to that, and you will see why First Class may not be impossible.

Interesting to know Egyptian el-Fayed that was once competing with the likes of Bill Gates 2 decades has dropped so low.

List appears agreeable, only surprise omission being Otedola. I know he is undergoing difficult period but never knew he's been so hit.

Jimoh Ibrahim may not make Nigeria's Top 40, not to talk of Africa's Top 40. Billionaires are not by mouth.
Can someone pick the nations newspapers of 2010 and see if this same Sam man did not encourage GEJ to contents the election. As a journalist he must have interacted severally with GEJ, why did they give us GEJ and later turn back to complain?

All these people are lairs. Same fokes. In as much I hate GEJ and his government, I detest those that helped to create him for selfish reasons.
I read virtually every piece of article Sam wrote in his 'IN TOUCH' column in the last 2 years. The closest article to your claim was the one he wrote in 2010 during the 'will Jonathan contest?' conundrum where he posited that a better argument for Jonathan contesting was to 1,  demystify the unfair perception that only the majority tribes can rule Nigeria and 2, to placate the Niger Delta and perhaps solve the unrest there.

I remember him arguing as above in one of his 2010 pieces but he was not expressly encouraging Jonathan to contest, he only said 'if at all he must contest, those are the valid grounds.'

But probably after knowing GEJ more, he has been the fiercest columnist-critic of GEJ even before GEJ eventually won.
Islam › Re: Why do Muslims hardly Pray In secular Gatherings? by Jarus(m): 11:05am On Nov 16, 2011
I have actually never been a fan of all these joint praying in mixed gatherings. Most times, when I find myself in coordinating position in a mixed gathering, I don't put opening/closing prayers in program.

In my company, we don't do it. We dont pray to start/close an event, but I remember a departmental retreat we had a couple of years ago and, strangely, prayers were put in agenda and I was the one that did the closing/Muslim prayer. I just blew grammar and ended with faatiha.

When we met in office next week, one of my Christian colleagues asked me, albeit jokingly, that why did I include arabic(faatiha) in my prayers and I told him him why shouldn't I, does he want to recite faatiha in Yoruba or English.

Although Yobo has been consistently committed to Eagles, pushing forward to even score goals in criticial periods, notwithstanding I don't think this is the right time to give him. As the captain of the SE that failed to qualify for the easiest task of qualifying for ANC just last month, the first time in 25 years, it is an insult and a celebration of failure to give him national award now. He has personally done well for Nigeria, but that should have been noted and penciled down for maybe next year, when he MUST have qualified Nigeria for 2013 ANC. The timing is wrong.
