The level of reasoning among supposedly educated Nigerians is very appalling. Because someone is addressed a Mallam, you think he doesn't have anything upstairs. Go figure. Bolaji Abdullah is not your next door aboki. A dumb person will not become editor in the elitist Thisday. Although I prefer him remaining in youth and development, he is one of the few articulate and intelligent young folks in this GEJ administration. |
Last year, Jarus selected a standout post from each person. I guess he went through their posting history and found what he found representative.Bros, I tried same for this year too but got stuck along the way when I realized I couldn't find for ALL of them. I just struck out that part. That said, this is no vote of no confidence on this year's but I think the introduction of voting along ethnic lines affected the quality this year. Notwithstanding, we have to respect the decision of the majority and crown whoever emerges the winner; especially as none of the rules we highlighted up there has been breached. |
I think he should have been left in youth and development. I read his blueprint for youth development and if allowed to implement, I expect, would make a huge difference. ortopazz:You definitely dont know anything. BJ, a former editor with Thisday and former Kwara state commissioner for education and technology, is one of the brightest young folks we have around now. |
The point is worry less about money as a graduate. Hard work usually pays in the endI very much agree with jay bee. With honesty, diligence and hard work at the early stages of your career, you will always end up with money irrespective of where you start. Truth is, these extermely paying coys have space for no more 5% of grads for entry level. I can start giving scholarships to those very smart but unfortunate kids like the ones I came across at one of those forsaken villages during my NYSC some years back. I can particularly recall one of them who showed so much promise that, till today, I am still regretting that I could not bring him to stay with my momsi and popsi in Lagos, register him in a better school and generally make him a better person. That boy was a super kid, with talents that surpassed those of many smart kids in the cities. I hope God will forgive me.Oh, tears!!! This reminds me of Abubakar, one very brilliant small kid in Balle, a village in Sokoto state, few miles away from Niger republic. As his teacher during my NYSC, I was so impressed with that young boy in that village that I wrote a letter to his parent to please ensure they take him to a good secondary in Sokoto township when he completes his primary education and ensures he goes ahead to obtain university. I recommended ABU to them. The boy was very promising. |

afam4eva:1, To avoid band-wagon effect. If poll is showing the results, it discourages some voters. "my candidate can never win, still far behind, make I no waste my vote jare". To avoid such. 2, To prevent rigging. If candidate X is seeing results and realize he is just, say 2 votes behind the leading candidate in the last minutes, all he or his supporters need do is create 3 new IDs and vote for him. 3, Suspense makes it more fun. It raises expectation. Everybody will want to come and see results on Dec 30, as against knowing the winner already by trend of poll even before expiration of voting 4, Even mods cannot view results until it becomes visible to everyone. |
Also, what industry can rival the oil and gas industry,in terms of employee compensation? For entry level, I don't think there is any, but as career progresses it may converge to same thing across top industries. I know someone that joined a the old IBTC in 1998 for NYSC and today, 13 years after, he is better off in terms of everything(including exposure and even pay) than most of his friends that joined oil companies, including MNCs then. He is now a GM in the enlarged StanbicIBTC Group and CEO of one of their subsidiaries, while the friends are just low to middle level managers in the IOCs. One lesson I learn from this person's case is: you actually don't need to work in oil industry before making big bucks. Another thing I have observed is that, most young guys that start from those high-paying IOCs tend to be extravagant and live very large, without saving! Except very few of them. So it may come down to little difference at the end of the day. |
Sagamite:You don't know anything. Even America can come and learn from our electoral system ![]() |

That said, I agree with ekt-bear that this poll may not throw up the best in this section this year. And that's a pity. I have seen nomination and voting along ethnic lines, which is very unfortunate. The 3 finalists last year were clearly the best and most analytical for that year, save few people that are equally good but not so active like Afam and Maxsiollun, hence did not get a look at. The reason why the 2009 edition for this section was not officially recognised was because of a flawed process which threw up Becomrich as winner - and I'm talking about Becomrich of 2009, not that of today, who is now saner. The mod then did not help matters, as rules of the games were not stated. Notwithstanding, this is politics section, dwelled not only by critics and analysts, but also politicians, so we cannot totally rule out politics, much as we want objectivity to be the guiding factor. I personally voted for Katsumoto, though my views on issues converge more with Gbawe's than Katz, whose views are usually at variance with mine on most issues, but I recognize his good arguing skills and fact-based debates, as well as his knowledge of political history. |
After the voting Can the moderators view who voted who and disqualify votes of any poster who probably registered between now and 30thUnfortunately, we can't prevent this but I don't think it can have significant impact. I can't imagine more than 5 new IDs coming up just because of a polling, which will mean height of joblessness. So the effect may just not be significant in determining eventual winner. Max, 5 new IDs created for that purpose, and I don't think 5 phony votes can swing the pendulum to a side. Opening new ID is not that easy; you open new email, go through registration, wait for confirmation etc. It's a tedious process that is intrinsically discouraging, except for a jobless person. On alliance, we will not encourage alliance but we cannot prevent it. But we will not add up any votes. Also, the Mods too cannot view the result until expiration, when it will become visible to everybody. The suspense adds fun to it, raises expectation and prevent band-wagon effect . |
No wonder. Underground politics |
Your vote has been counted. That's how it is set. |
Lol. Hmmmnn, Dayo, how you see that one? Na wa o. Ok. My apologies. We thought the counting of votes was going to be more time consuming. But with an improved process(counting from time to time) it was a lot easiier, hence the commencement of second stage mmediately. Immediately. |
Poll is secret ballot system, results not visible even to us Mods. It becomes automatically visible at the expiration of the poll December 30. Don't worry, once it shows 'log in blabla' your vote has been counted. |
Fixed. Thanks |
Good one. |
Nomination stage has ended, here is final standing: 1, MissyB - 8 2, Anonymous - 2 3, Iz2much - 1 4, Aloyemeka - 1 5, Peddylinko - 1 MissyB and Anonymous thru to next round, one more to join. To break tie, I go with sudden death rule. Any of the three that gets fresh nomination first will join the Top 2 and the poll will be up. |
Nomination has ended, final standing: 1, Myne White - 2 2, Orikinla - 1 3, Maclatunji - 1 The 3 make it to the poll. Start voting. Voting ends Dec 30 |
Have you ever seen a football match stopped before just a team is leading 5-0 by first half? |
Odunnu: o serious oI actually don't need to win before making comments |
JARUS' STATEMENT I feel humbled making the Top 3 and actually flattered getting 30 nominations. Like the Supermod has earlier stated, this may not exactly be a reflection of the most hardowrking mods, but probably a reflection of people's assessment. Seun and the Supermods, who work with us, know who the most hardworking mods are - and in actual fact, every mod works hard; after all, it's not easy working without pay. That said, whatever the final outcome is, I appreciate all the nominations, votes and the generous words I have read here from people I don't even know and have never come across in my almost 5 years on this forum and more than 2 years of being a mod. |
BRIEF CITATION OF FINALISTS 1, DEOLS Deols joined Nairaland in 2008 but in no year has she been more active than 2011. She opened educative threads, brings interesting and refreshing, and most times mid-way, perspectives to issues. She knows her onions and defends the deen here and elsewhere. She is also level headed and hardly gets angry, even as it is almost impossible not to be, in this section. She also has a good sense of humour. No doubt, Deols was a very valuable member of this section in 2011. 2, LAGOSSHIA: Although he shares different views on few issues from other members of the section, he has no doubt compocted himself so well that even people that disagree with him on the issues nominated him. He has continued to educate us on his beliefs, while uniting with other Muslims in areas of similiarities, especially during attacks from our 'friends' from the main board. That Lagosshia is a quality addition here in 2011 is not in doubts. 3, SWEETNECTA: Sweetnecta got nominations last year but never made it to the final list. He dwelled more in the Religion section last year, engaging the anti-Islam posters, but he was active here too in the outgoing year in addition to his area of specialization of bursting lies and propaganda against Islam in the other end. Sweetnecta is no doubt highly knowledgeable about Islam and deploys his knowledge with wisdom. Clearly, he is one of the shining lights of this section 200c was won by Muhsin, 2010 by Lagosboy, who takes the cake in 2011? |
Thank you very much for nominating. At the end of stage 1, nomination, we have the final list: 1, Deols - 7 2, Lagos shia - 6 3, Sweetnecta - 5 4, Azharuddin - 3 5, Tbaba - 2 6, Toba - 1 Now over to the final stage, which is voting. The finalists are: 1, Deols 2, Lagos shia 3, Sweetnecta Voting ends December 30, 2011 |
Just click appropriate threads and vote. No comments for now pls. Thanks. |
NOMINATION THREAD: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-817837.0.html HALL OF FAME VOTING-2011: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-825602.0.html HALL OF SHAME VOTING - 2011: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-825604.0.html REFRESHER: 2010 INDUCTEES FAME: Sanusi Lamido Sanusi SHAME: The cabal https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-565376.32.html#msg7353190 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-570031.0.html https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-570036.0.html |
Sequel to the emergence of Finalists in the nomination thread https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-817837.64.html#msg9768683 we present the next stage, voting, which will run for 2 weeks 1, PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN: President Goodluck is having a turbulent start to his 4-year tenure as President of Nigeria, in what looks like the poorest start by any President in the history of Nigeria. From fuel subsidy to insecurity, many Nigerians have written off the Bayelsa born Zoologist. And nothing reflects this mood more than his name featuring in this unenviable category by popular nomination by Nairalanders, although he has actually never been admired by Nairalanders. He was nominated in this category last year too, but escaped by polling lower votes than the eventual inductee - The cabal. Will he pull this one through too? You decide 2, DR REUBEN ABATI: From his high horse as Nigeria's most respected and most followed newspaper columnist, satirist and political pundits, Dr Reuben Abati's decision to be the spokesperson of a PDP government dropped him in public rating. Almost every utterance he makes now are being compared to what he had said on similar issue as a columnist in the past, and they keep turning out at variance. To say a lot of Nigerians are disappointed in the former Guardian editorial board Chair is an understatement. But will he make our blacklist? 3, CHIEF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO: The two-time president has ruled Nigeria for 11 years and his performance is usually a subject of debate, although the people that believed he destroyed Nigeria are more. But his nomiantion here is not due to his past performance but his culpability in the untold hardship his party, PDP, is currently inflicting Nigerians. Some nominees also stated the embarrassment he caused PDP in the South West as the reason they are nomianting him. Will he make our Hall of Shame? You vote NB: This thread is not open for discussion as that has already been done in the nomination thread. Just vote and expect results on December 30, when the polls expire. |
We called for nominations for induction into Nairaland Politics Section Hall of Fame 2011 in the thread below and the 3 finalists are presented for voting to choose the final inductee. Recall, last year the winner was Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, CBN Boss. Who joins him this year? You decide https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-817837.64.html#msg9768683 FINALISTS 1, PROFESSOR CHINUA ACHEBE: Professor Chinua Achebe has actually never been short of recognition at any point in time, but in 2011 his decision to turn down the National Award offered him by the current administartion earned applause across Nigeria. It was seen as a statement of condemnation to the parlous state of things in Nigeria, which according to him, had not changed since he turned down similar honour 7 years ago. Prof Achebe has continued to lead the way in showing that you can use your good name to jolt government to action. We hail Prof Achebe for this action. But will it earn him a place in our Hall of Fame? You decide 2, SLAIN CORPERS: They were youths. They were serving their country. They were called to come help the National electoral body in conducting elections. But they ended up in their graves. Many people have named them the heroes of the relatively successful 2011 elections. From Bauchi to Suleja, their memories linger. Will they get an immortalization here as inductees into our Hall of Fame for 2011? It's your choice. 3, ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU Known as the Asiwaju(leader) of opposition, Bola Tinubu is the strongest political personality from the South-West today and perhaps the fiercest nightmare to the ruling PDP. In 2011, he not only snatched 4 states from PDP but also survived all antics by the ruling party to cage him. Many people also believe that but for him and Buhari, opposition would have been lond dead in Nigeria. Do you see this man as worthy of our Hall of Fame? Just vote up there. NB: Thread not opened for discussion. Just vote and wait for the results by December 30. All discussions already done in the nomination thread. Reagrds |

BRIEF CITATION OF THE FINALISTS 1, GBAWE: Gbawe joined Nairaland in 2009 but hugged limelight in 2011 in the heated run-up to 2011 elections - one of the most epochal periods in the history of Nairaland Politics Section. He started as a strong defender of Ribadu candidacy but went beyond to be the strongest defender of ACN and their leader, Bola Tinubu, on Nairaland. He writes well and presents his arguments with logic. He is not known for insulting - a quality that is scarce in this part of Nairaland. He argues passionately about his convictions. For this he commands a good following in the Politics Section of Nairaland, especially among the 'progressives' and 'opposition'. 2, ONLYTRUTH: Recently crowned Eze Ndigbo Nairaland, Onlytruth has been on Nairaland since 2009 and has become the rallying point for his people. He is more known for his defence of his people, but unlike many others, does so without breaching the rules - a quality that is rare on Nairaland. 3, KATSUMOTO: Katsumoto is the only finalist last year that still made it to the final again this year. He lost the award by one vote to Dapo-bear in 2010. Highly respected on the politics section for his analytical prowess and debating skills. He is very visible in serious topics, marshaling facts to buttress his arguments. His choice of words in his comments is another strong point for him. Katsumoto's main turf are arguments that border on Nigerian History and related issues. He is a respected voice in those areas. |
