Thanks a lot for your contributions @ tejiri4, ginalex, johnpotter660, benflash and big Jarus. I appreciate it. Lol "what if they throw her in sales or marketing", I thought so to.

One other thing, she's not going for audit but tax. You think such skills will help in other industries in the future?

Please what are the specialized departments that one can even work in a bank apart from sales, operations, customer service. Asking for myself.

Modified.
I'm a tax professional myself. It has its merits and demerits.

Main pros:

1. As it is a very specialised branch of Accounting/Law, it will be less competitive when he wants to move from practice (Big 4) to the industry (company). He does not have to compete with other accountants. What this means is, you beat the competition from other accountants (mainly auditors) when a tax opening is advertised. There are a lot of accountants and any opening for accounting/finance position is usually very competitive.

2. Also, more and more companies are becoming tax conscious, and setting up tax department, which means the demand for tax professionals will continue to rise.

3. Somehow, it also has job security when you move to industry. Because it is a very specialized field, they cannot just move just any other accountant there unlike other units within Finance department. If the department is lean (i.e just 1 or 2, or max 3 people in tax department, depending on size of company), tax department is almost immune from layoff.

Main cons:

1. It is too restrictive, unlike other aspects of accounting. You can hardly apply for any role outside tax (eg Finance Manager) and be considered. They will tell you are too specialised. Audit guys have better advantage here.

2. With few exceptions, you are least likely to be promoted Finance Manager or CFO among the other accountants within a company because you are too specialized. An exception is a PwC Tax Partner that was recently made CFO of Forte Oil.

I joined NL as a job seeker during my NYSC in 2007.

Still active 12 years later.

By God's grace, even if I become CEO of an oil company (or GMD of NNPC....lol), I go still dey comment on NL.

It's a 2-way thing. I also benefit from NL. Met some fantastic guys on NL some of whom we have met physically even outside Nigeria etc.Treated to a nice dinner by a NL friend in Manchester last year.

Set up a career consulting firm leveraging NL popularity on career matters. My partner that runs it full time and myself met on NL.

Wrote a book in 2014 ( https://www.jarushub.com/the-road-to-victoria-island/). First chapter of that book was a comment I made on NL in 2008.

@Jarus Mr Jarus, kindly help! What advice do you have for a graduate who just got an offer from a bank and a big4 accounting firm(will be first job experience), but whose age by next year is not eligible for graduate trainee programs in private coys in this our wonderful country Nigeria. This person is open to to all career paths except sales/marketing. She wishes to choose either offer and follow whatever career it accords her professionally without wishing to change career at any later time in the nearest or furthest future. She studied economics. Thanks a lot sir.
Easily Big 4 as earlier commenters advised.

I happened to perform my pilgrimage in makkah last year. After concluding the hajj exercise, while still waiting to come back to Nigeria. I joined one early morning Qur'an class with one of the scholars in the Mosque. Since I can speak Arabic language to some extent, it's not something difficult for me to interact.
Meeting with the scholar and introducing myself to him that I'm a Nigerian. The first thing he asked me was.

Do you know Rashid Yekeen.?
He is very good and amazing with football.
I was like.... Rashid Yekeen.huh .. I never saw that coming.
I just told him I know him.
But actually forgot the country he's from.

Funny post.
Yekini cannot be a better brand than Taribo West that was a very strong man in Milan defence, Ikpeba the Prince of Monaco. Kanu Nwankwo is an Arsenal Legend, won champions league with Ajax and also played for Inter.

Amuneke is much better player than Amokachi but he was plagued with injury.
We are talking experience, what we saw, you are talking from your head.

Ikpeba was not a success in national team.

Pick a random football follower on the street of Cairo or Tunis or Harare, and ask them to name Nigerian footballers, they will mention Okocha, Amokachi, Yekini. That is the point.

Zlatan is the the best human footballer.

Ronaldo and Messi na Oracle.
He has won what he deserved- Puskas Award for best goal in a year.

That's all.

Modric got result when he played (UCL, WC final). Zlatan never won anything major for a team. Let him get Sweden to WC first before you talk of him winning WPOTY.

Zlatan scores great goals, no doubt, but let the goals not just be in league. Let it be decisive goal in WC semi final or UCL final.

Not 30 league goals for PSG without going past QF in UCL.

He shouldn't. He is just getting started and I there are absolutely no signs of him falling off. When he drops in form we can simply stop calling him but until then it would be ridiculous to allow a striker who has scored 12 goals in his last 11 competitive matches go just like that.
I support his quitting now. Ovation is loudest. Better to be begged to stay (and he refuses) than to be disgraced out of the team. We have short memory in Nigeria. If he goes 3 matches without scoring now, we will forget his 12 goals in one year and start calling for his head.

Even at club level, he will stop getting suitors in the next 2 years and will find himself playing 10-12 games a season in Qatar.

This one better pass yaya sanogo like this
But why do France-born African players that choose to play for France become big players signed by big teams while those that choose to play for African teams struggle to make it big in world football.

Africa's most successful footballers in European club football (like Eto'o, Drogba, Kanu etc) were born in Africa.

Those born in France (or other European countries) become stars only if they play for France, Belgium etc.

Kante, Dembele, Pogba, and majority of the French WC winning team of African origin were born in France. Those that were their mates at junior level (like all these Niang, Feghouli, etc) in French national team but end up playing for their African country at the senior level end up at best average in club football success.

An exception is Aubameyang (born in France) who was a French junior international but played for Gabon and a success at club level.

By the way, just saw that Vieira was actually born in Senegal and Desailly born in Ghana (not in France).
SportsAre Nigerian Footballers Of 1994-1998 Set Nigeria's Global Ambassadors? by Jarus(op): 11:41pm On Jul 19, 2019
Footballers, especially 1994-98 set, appear to be Nigeria's biggest ambassadors to the world. Well, maybe apart from 419.

From personal and friends' experience, when you introduce yourself as a Nigerian to most foreigners, the first thing they ask you about are Okocha, Kanu etc.

My Irish-Algerian seat mate couldn't stop talking about Rashidi Yekini and Amokachi on learning I'm a Nigerian, on the 3 hour Istanbul-Madinah flight in 2016.

An Egyptian friend in Saudi Arabia couldn't stop talking about Okocha's football wizardry. I have also met several Egy;tian friends in Dubai and once they know me as a Nigerian, they start asking about Okocha, Rashidi etc, Many other past experiences.

A generation of footballers Nigerian hardly even remember again.

When I posted the above on my Facebook wall, some of my friends shared similar experiences as reproduced below:

Same happened to me yesterday when there was an urgent need to take Uber..The Uber driver is a Turkish who just move to Toronto 5 months ago and can barely speak English, He struggle to ask me where I am from and on hearing I’m from Nigeria He responded by saying wow
Okocha!!!!
Amokachi!!!
I responded with a smile saying
Hassan Sas
Hakan sukur
If you go to Egypt, they will almost force you into claiming Kanu and Jay Jay as your relative.
In Paris, they still hang posters of JJ in the homes of some PSGs fan
I once met an American and Egyptian whose favorite is rashidi yekini. I just stare at their mouths when they talk about how skillful he is and how much they love him.
An Imam shared his experience with us during khutubah last year. He met some Egyptian pilgrims in 2006 or 7 Hajj.Imam said these north African brothers took him to their hotel when they got to know he was from Nigeria.
They asked after Okocha and Rashid Yekini. Then, they asked Imam to make dua for them.He got about 500 Riyals after the prayer.
Nigeria cannot produce those generation of soccer ambassadors again.
My friend's Egyptian friend here was practically jumping up and down in excitement for meeting Okocha's countryman!
An uncle of mine travelled to Bangkok one time and at port entry he slumped, taken to d hospital wen he regained consciousness he was asked of his nationality in d hospital but as a black man with tribal marks with Ivorian int'l passport they don't know ivory coast they keep saying Nigeria! Africa! rashidi yekini !several times
A Dutch guy in 2012/13 kept going on about Tijani Babangida and Oliseh to me. He later started talking about Amokachie and Ikpeba.
Have you experienced similar thing? Share your experience of foreigners taking highly of Nigerian footballers of 1994-1998 set.
