AHEAD of plans to decongest the existing Lekki-Epe corridor from traffic congestion, construction giant, Messrs Julius Berger Plc revealed at the weekend that construction activities at the ambitious West Africa’s first suspension bridge has reached 72 per cent completion. Contract for the bridge project was awarded in March 2009 by the Lagos State government, conceived and partly designed as an alternative route meant to address the traffic problem associated with the area, and to shorten travel time between Ikoyi and Lekki as against what currently obtains, where motorists on a bad day (when traffic is hectic on Lekki-Epe Expressway) spend hours before reaching their destinations. The Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge has a length of 1,358m with the height of the pylon being 87 metres from water level. Work began on it in 2009, and is expected to be completed next year, according to senior officials. A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck (the load-bearing portion) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. Statistics shows that the bridge is designed to have a maximum of 3.5 per cent vertical alignment and minimum radius of 350 metres horizontal alignment with 90 metres pylon height from water level. Additional facilities to be added on full completion are 2.3mx2 walkway, streetlights and cable ducts. The cable bridge has a length of 170 metres and a height of 87 metres from water level, and consists of two spans with an average of 85 metres. The 1358-metre bridge (length) is being constructed across the lagoon flowing towards Osborne in Ikoyi and Lekki Scheme1 Housing Estate. The project is anchored on Admiralty Way end of the new Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge expected to be terminated at Alexander Road on Ikoyi. The bridge is also designed to have a maximum of 3.5 per cent vertical alignment and minimum radius of 350 metres horizontal alignment with 90 metres pylon height from water level. Additional facilities to be added on full completion are 2.3mx2 walkway, streetlights and cable ducts. Specifically, the company confirmed to The Guardian through its Technical Manager, Dr. Peer Lubasch, that the foundation of the bridge approach area and part of the main bridge had been finished putting the percentage work done at 72 per cent. He also revealed that construction of the roundabout area towards Lekki and Ikoyi would begin in January next year while total completion of the project would come at the end of 2012 According to Head of Department Technical Services Julius Berger Plc, Mr. Joern Seitz, an engineer, Bilfinger Berger Nigeria GmbH developed customised designs for bridges as the bridge was embarked by the state government to help decongest the existing Lekki-Epe corridor by way of moving traffic direct from Ikoyi to the Peninsula without having to drive through the torturous Falomo Bridge via Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Victoria Island. “We provide Julius Berger Nigeria with materials and equipment that are difficult or impossible to procure inside the country. We thus provide logistical and planning support for the construction of the Lekki-lkoyi Bridge in Lagos,” Seitz said. Also according to one of the site engineers, Segun Ajibola, engineering specifications length of approach road from at Ikoyi will be 338 metres. Walkways on both sides of the bridge are put at 2.3metres as width of the bridge (carriageway) stands at 8 metres x 2 metres. It would be also recalled that the sum of N10 billion was reported released by the Lagos State Government in 2009 to Messrs. Julius Berger Plc, towards the execution of two major infrastructure development projects in the bustling city. The projects include the expansion of the Eric Moore-Mile 2 Road (which is the initial leg of the multi-billion-naira, multi-phase Lagos-Badagry Expressway rehabilitation scheme) as well as the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge (connecting Lekki Peninsular Scheme I with Osborne Road in Ikoyi). https://ngrguardiannews.com/images/stories/2011/September2011/Ikoyi-Suspension.jpg http://www.thenigeriandaily.com/2011/09/26/west-africa%E2%80%99s-first-suspension-bridge-in-lagos-hits-72-completion/ |

ekt_bear:First question, are Itsekiris and Edos (particularly Binis who have Odua heritage) not in the SS? Are Olukunmis not in the SS?? Are they not your "interest"? Are Ilajes not in Delta,SS?? Let's start from there! |
ShangoThor:VERY WELL SAID!!! ekt_bear:It WILL benefit you, not just you but your generations. I need not spell it out. Think about it! From rapid development to reduction in religious related genocides and crimes to freedom to go anywhere without the fear of being killed. I can go on and on! Sitting on the fence leaves the SW vulnerable! |
igbo2011:You are making a LOT OF SENSE. I think the highlighted is against the constitution of Nigeria. About the engineers thing, The FG (not state G) should invest SERIOUSLY in Innoson motors. Those guys just need a bit of motivation and incentive to be our main manufacturer of motor engines. |
Ekubear, bluetooth and all The point is, BE YOUR BROTHER'S KEEPER! An attack on SS or SE should be seen as an attack on the SOUTH! A Yoruba man's life is not more precious than a SSoutherner's life. One day, this lackluster attitude will bite you in the a55. The SW needs to be decisive! @Point B Lol, welcome back EZEUCHE!!! ![]() How can the SW be a "buffer zone"?? It does not make sense! In a war, they will choose a side. |
daguru:I can't wait!!! God bless this man (Fashola) |
Gbenge 77:Does he not deserve it? |
South-East:Which one has been done in Abuja, OUR FCT (since 2008 |
airlord:Its quite expensive to purchase new LTRs without the FG's input. The point of the project is to have an EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE transportation system. gogodaye: Whitehorse:Those are the ONLY sensible Governors I have seen in Nigeria . . .so far . . . Whitehorse:I support your statement. +1000 |
@Bluetooth Yorubas and the SW have to stop this lazy and non-chalant attitude! Must Boko haram bomb a SWestern state before you start learning to defend yourselves? Must they kill a Yoruba man before you start forming alliances with the SS,SE and MB?? You guys need to get off your high-horses and form alliances with the rest of the South! You cannot be on the fence forever. With that said, forming alliances does not mean you cannot chastise the President when you think he's wrong. But, the SW should wake up!!! |
igbo2011:I think it should be ready by the end of next year, that is, if there is a SERIOUS DELAY. After the modification in US, it should will be shipped to Lagos, pretty soon. About the Subway system. That will be pointless in my opinion. She (Lagos) already has BRT buses in operation, coupled with the LRTs coming in. That should be enough for Lagos. After this, what we need is CONSTANT power supply in Lagos (which has drastically improved over the recent weeks) and an intercity-rail system in Nigeria. At least, one from Lagos to PH or Calabar passing through Warri. Another from Abuja to Lagos,PH and probably Kaduna, Kano or Sokoto. . . and obviously, there is no way you would get to those cities mentioned without passing through and STOPPING in most, if not all of the geo-zones. |

tpia@:Yes, I know. I also know that if there is a 3-way split (I want a 2-way though). The Edos are most likely going to join Odua and operate federalism where they control their stuffs. I just can't see them, Itsekiris and maybe (emphasis on "maybe" Uhrobos, joining the Ijaw dominated ND republic. I just can't. Its a personal opinion though . Moreover, the WEST achieved more when together, than the West and Mid west. It was this era the WEST had Free education, first tv station in Africa etc |
PhysicsQED:My statement, was to annoy him!!!! Read the small print. It was a sarcastic statement. ![]() Btw, I am talking about the Old west not SW. Are Edos in the SW? No. I know you are an Edo man BUT the truth is you can hardly separate Edos/iod and Yorubas/boid. |
ndu_chucks: jason123: ![]() |
I repeat!Let me play the devil's advocate In the WEST, if you are not Edo/Edoid or Yoruba/Yoruboid (even these two are family). YOU ARE A "SETTLER"!!! ![]() |
WOW!!! Well done! ![]() |
By kasiem I think the SSers will suffer it most, cos, when their leaders pockets the proceeds of their oil, there wouldn't be any other survival dint for them. Naturally, they're indolent and barbaric; their polluted lands will be of no farming benefit to them. --------- I didn't see this earlier. Like, WTF?! Yes, I agree the leaders are corrupt BUT every other thing you said there is irrelevant. We are NOT barbaric! Only a few "fights" here and there by expansionists, apart from that, the SS is quite a cool place. Bendel can still go back to Timber and Rubber. Not every single plot of land is polluted, as you are trying to portray. |
Onlytruth:@Your first paragraph LOL. Itsekiris+Ilajes in Delta produce 75% of Delta oil. In Ondo, Lagos and Edo; there is oil there as well. We in the West are also very well Educated! As you can see on this forum. From, Gbawe, Kilode?!, Eku bear, Katsumoto, Akanbi edu, Ajanlekoko, OMA4J, Beaf etc (sorry if I missed out your name). We wouldn't depend on Oil BUT we have it in abundance if we need it. Ondo/Ekiti axis used to be the 4th largest producer of Cocoa in Africa before Oil. The Mid-west had Rubber, Timber and currently Oil. With Lagos and Eko atlantic . .hmm! Trust me, the West is VERY MUCH FINE! ![]() @Your second paragraph Yes, I am for Southern Nigeria FIRST before West or Odua. My reasons are very simple. There used to be Southern Nigeria with no wars or ethnic clashes recorded, why can't we have that now? The Igbos, Yorubas and SSoutherners have our NATURAL advantages and disadvantages BUT other ethnic groups will complement our individual short comings. Education, sophistication and a sense of progress unities us all in the south. No one really cares about religion in the south. I can go on and on! @your last Yes, I don't. Not because I dislike Hausas or anything of that sort. But there are fundamental differences in the way we(the South) think compared to the way the CORE North thinks. To them, its mainly about religion and ruling Nigeria by all means. To us, its mainly about corruption but DEVELOPMENT! |
In the West, its either you are Edo/Edoid or Yoruba/Yorubiod. Anything from those two is a waste of time!!! |
Onlytruth:No access to sea and oil in Odua! . .and if to you, I am Yoruba. Then, so be it! I guess Kpogede is also Yoruba, abi?? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-710432.0.html Relax101:Everything concern Warri with Odua! Itsekiris and Uhrobos are concerned with Odua! Benin empire is also concerned with Odua! ![]() So are the Yorubas the concern of the Oba of Benin |
Onlytruth:Maybe the off shore oil in Ijaw republic or Biafra republic (if you guys like it like that or the Ijaws are with you guys in Biafra). As for Odua republic? HELL NO!! You will be shocked when that time comes! |
@OP Odua republic (with 3 capitals in Ibadan, Warri and Benin) Biafra republic Ijaw nation (ND republic DOES NOT EXIST!) Arewa republic |
