PoliticsWest Africa’s First Suspension Bridge In Lagos Hits 72% Completion by jason123(op): 4:12pm On Sep 29, 2011
AHEAD of plans to decongest the existing Lekki-Epe corridor from traffic congestion, construction giant, Messrs Julius Berger Plc revealed at the weekend that construction activities at the ambitious West Africa’s first suspension bridge has reached 72 per cent completion.

Contract for the bridge project was awarded in March 2009 by the Lagos State government, conceived and partly designed as an alternative route meant to address the traffic problem associated with the area, and to shorten travel time between Ikoyi and Lekki as against what currently obtains, where motorists on a bad day (when traffic is hectic on Lekki-Epe Expressway) spend hours before reaching their destinations.

The Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge has a length of 1,358m with the height of the pylon being 87 metres from water level. Work began on it in 2009, and is expected to be completed next year, according to senior officials.

A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck (the load-bearing portion) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders.

Statistics shows that the bridge is designed to have a maximum of 3.5 per cent vertical alignment and minimum radius of 350 metres horizontal alignment with 90 metres pylon height from water level. Additional facilities to be added on full completion are 2.3mx2 walkway, streetlights and cable ducts. The cable bridge has a length of 170 metres and a height of 87 metres from water level, and consists of two spans with an average of 85 metres.

The 1358-metre bridge (length) is being constructed across the lagoon flowing towards Osborne in Ikoyi and Lekki Scheme1 Housing Estate. The project is anchored on Admiralty Way end of the new Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge expected to be terminated at Alexander Road on Ikoyi. The bridge is also designed to have a maximum of 3.5 per cent vertical alignment and minimum radius of 350 metres horizontal alignment with 90 metres pylon height from water level. Additional facilities to be added on full completion are 2.3mx2 walkway, streetlights and cable ducts.

Specifically, the company confirmed to The Guardian through its Technical Manager, Dr. Peer Lubasch, that the foundation of the bridge approach area and part of the main bridge had been finished putting the percentage work done at 72 per cent.

He also revealed that construction of the roundabout area towards Lekki and Ikoyi would begin in January next year while total completion of the project would come at the end of 2012

According to Head of Department Technical Services Julius Berger Plc, Mr. Joern Seitz, an engineer, Bilfinger Berger Nigeria GmbH developed customised designs for bridges as the bridge was embarked by the state government to help decongest the existing Lekki-Epe corridor by way of moving traffic direct from Ikoyi to the Peninsula without having to drive through the torturous Falomo Bridge via Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Victoria Island.

“We provide Julius Berger Nigeria with materials and equipment that are difficult or impossible to procure inside the country. We thus provide logistical and planning support for the construction of the Lekki-lkoyi Bridge in Lagos,” Seitz said.

Also according to one of the site engineers, Segun Ajibola, engineering specifications length of approach road from at Ikoyi will be 338 metres. Walkways on both sides of the bridge are put at 2.3metres as width of the bridge (carriageway) stands at 8 metres x 2 metres.

It would be also recalled that the sum of N10 billion was reported released by the Lagos State Government in 2009 to Messrs. Julius Berger Plc, towards the execution of two major infrastructure development projects in the bustling city.

The projects include the expansion of the Eric Moore-Mile 2 Road (which is the initial leg of the multi-billion-naira, multi-phase Lagos-Badagry Expressway rehabilitation scheme) as well as the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge (connecting Lekki Peninsular Scheme I with Osborne Road in Ikoyi).

I am not advocating sitting on the fence.

I'm saying:

A) We don't give a crap about either of these other 2 or 3 sides. Don't intervene to help any of them, since none of them concern you.
B) However, still be ready to defend yourself and your interests as necessary.

I think you guys are advocating (B) (which I agree with), but also want to intervene to help one of the actors (which I don't agree with.)

If you are advocating picking a side, you sure as hell better come up with some good arguments in favor of this.

And not fluffy bulls1t like "The South", etc, etc.
First question, are Itsekiris and Edos (particularly Binis who have Odua heritage) not in the SS? Are Olukunmis not in the SS?? Are they not your "interest"? Are Ilajes not in Delta,SS??

Let's start from there!

Absolutely hilarious, I will say this only once because in my opinion I think "SOME" Yoruba are delusional and suffer from a FATAL CONCEIT.

The position of abstaining, sitting on the fence, or 'ronu-ing' as I fondly put it (LOL) is not going to all of a sudden enable the Yoruba to:

(a) Mobilise a well organised homogenous Militia Unit out of the rabble we currently have, e.g. OPC - a front for Agbero's and area boys, this takes time and planning. It is not something that can be done overnight because we wake up overnight to find our women are being brutally gang violated, and our children are being slaughtered, and our homes are being bombed or burnt out. Especially a militia Unit that cannot be compromised by individal comprising members by bribery. My point being this kind of command structure requires planing and awareness.

(b) Or generate large cash storage of modern weaponry needed to defend ourselves. I suppose some believe we can do this overnight, this makes me laugh so much because it is strategically elementary, especially considering that other factions and regions are already armed or arming themselves.
VERY WELL SAID!!!

ekt_bear:
@PointB: This is (mostly) a political struggle between some elements in the core north and those in the PDP. It is a political struggle, not an ethnic or religious one, to me. I don't care about either of these two factions struggling.

@jason123: There is no "South." When was there one?

I have no clue why I'm supposed to be supporting some middle belt group fighting a core north group, with the middle belt group's objective that political power should rotate to the east after GEJ.

Why do I care about any of that? How does that benefit me? Of what relevance are their goals to mine?
It WILL benefit you, not just you but your generations. I need not spell it out. Think about it! From rapid development to reduction in religious related genocides and crimes to freedom to go anywhere without the fear of being killed. I can go on and on!

Sitting on the fence leaves the SW vulnerable!

This is really good. But somebody neds to start a company that manufacturers trains in Nigeria.  We need to get our engineers the experience then maybe they can start building planes as well.

I don't think I want Oby Ezekwesili or Ngozi Okonjo as a preisent of Nigeria.  They worked for the World Bank and I think that the World Bank will use them as puppets for American interests.  If they will fight against imperialism then theywould be great presidents.  But if Fashola isn't president then he should be a governor of a different state.  Maybe he can switch with Ameachi (hopefully tribalism won't affect anything.)
You are making a LOT OF SENSE. I think the highlighted is against the constitution of Nigeria.
About the engineers thing,
The FG (not state G) should invest SERIOUSLY in Innoson motors. Those guys just need a bit of motivation and incentive to be our main manufacturer of motor engines.

Ekubear, bluetooth and all

The point is, BE YOUR BROTHER'S KEEPER! An attack on SS or SE should be seen as an attack on the SOUTH! A Yoruba man's life is not more precious than a SSoutherner's life. One day, this lackluster attitude will bite you in the a55. The SW needs to be decisive!

@Point B
Lol, welcome back EZEUCHE!!! cheesy

How can the SW be a "buffer zone"?? It does not make sense! In a war, they will choose a side.

Which one has been done in Abuja, OUR FCT (since 2008 cry)?? Which one has been done in West Africa?! C'mon, give credit when its due. It is the smallest state in Nigeria, we are talking about.

Brilliant mmove but errrr y "tokunbohs"huh? surely Lagos state can afford new Light rails not to talk of the safety implications and life span, commendable but could have been beta,
Its quite expensive to purchase new LTRs without the FG's input. The point of the project is to have an EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE transportation system.

gogodaye:
The last official comment on the Abuja rail was a laughable cryout by the 'Senating' Minister of FCT crying out that the project has not been funded as a result of it not being captured in the budgetary apprpriations for like 2 years now and that he was going to see and plead with his brother minister in charge of Finance and some other bureaucrats to make provisions for the project.
The Chinese contracting firm have equally expressed their disquiet at the attitude of the Nigerian government towards the successful execution of the project. The government was yet to acquire and pay compensation to persons whose properties lay within the right of way so as to enable them enter into such poperties. Work on the project for now is STALLED. I have my doubts if its still a priority since no one apportions monetary costs to the wasted manhours in traffic gridlocks and its health and social implications.  I just either BRF or Amaechi get theirs going so that this lazy Abuja people would be forced to wake up to their responsibilities.
Whitehorse:
Also,

As far as i'm concerned, the only governors that i know are doing well (at least by nigerian standard) is Fashola - Lagos, Amaechi- Rivers, and Sullivan-Enugu, my home state (yes, i know about the libido issue)
Those are the ONLY sensible Governors I have seen in Nigeria . . .so far . . .

Whitehorse:
I'm very comfortable with the refurbished trains. Have any of you guys been on the London Underground? The trains i c the pictures looker cleaner and better than the current London underground. smiley

I think Fashola should start making contacts across the east and middle belt and North for 2015. It will be very sad if the guy just goes into oblivion after 2015.

P:S Before the ethnic bashing start, please save it, I'm not pro east, west, north or south, i'm pro development!
I support your statement. +1000

Yorubas and the SW have to stop this lazy and non-chalant attitude! Must Boko haram bomb a SWestern state before you start learning to defend yourselves? Must they kill a Yoruba man before you start forming alliances with the SS,SE and MB?? You guys need to get off your high-horses and form alliances with the rest of the South!
You cannot be on the fence forever.

With that said, forming alliances does not mean you cannot chastise the President when you think he's wrong. But, the SW should wake up!!!

When will Eko Rail be ready by? Also are they thinking about doing a subway system in Lagos?
I think it should be ready by the end of next year, that is, if there is a SERIOUS DELAY. After the modification in US, it should will be shipped to Lagos, pretty soon.

About the Subway system.
That will be pointless in my opinion. She (Lagos) already has BRT buses in operation, coupled with the LRTs coming in. That should be enough for Lagos. After this, what we need is CONSTANT power supply in Lagos (which has drastically improved over the recent weeks) and an intercity-rail system in Nigeria. At least, one from Lagos to PH or Calabar passing through Warri. Another from Abuja to Lagos,PH and probably Kaduna, Kano or Sokoto. . . and obviously, there is no way you would get to those cities mentioned without passing through and STOPPING in most, if not all of the geo-zones.

Yes, I know. I also know that if there is a 3-way split (I want a 2-way though). The Edos are most likely going to join Odua and operate federalism where they control their stuffs. I just can't see them, Itsekiris and maybe (emphasis on "maybe"wink Uhrobos, joining the Ijaw dominated ND republic. I just can't. Its a personal opinion though undecided. I think the SSers will suffer it most, cos, when their leaders pockets the proceeds of their oil, there wouldn't be any other survival dint for them. Naturally, they're indolent and barbaric; their polluted lands will be of no farming benefit to them.

---------
I didn't see this earlier. Like, WTF?! Yes, I agree the leaders are corrupt BUT every other thing you said there is irrelevant. We are NOT barbaric! Only a few "fights" here and there by expansionists, apart from that, the SS is quite a cool place.
Bendel can still go back to Timber and Rubber. Not every single plot of land is polluted, as you are trying to portray.

LOL @ jason, you are scared to death about living in a country without the Igbos.
That is why you are going gra gra about oil and sea access you don't currently (and will NEVER) control.
Abeg talk true bro.

I know you are a die hard believer in Southern Nigeria. Why not say so, than try to play tough with what you've already given away.

I know you don't want Nigeria to continue. So stop lying with your gra gra.  undecided
@Your first paragraph
LOL. Itsekiris+Ilajes in Delta produce 75% of Delta oil. In Ondo, Lagos and Edo; there is oil there as well. We in the West are also very well Educated! As you can see on this forum. From, Gbawe, Kilode?!, Eku bear, Katsumoto, Akanbi edu, Ajanlekoko, OMA4J, Beaf etc (sorry if I missed out your name). We wouldn't depend on Oil BUT we have it in abundance if we need it.
Ondo/Ekiti axis used to be the 4th largest producer of Cocoa in Africa before Oil. The Mid-west had Rubber, Timber and currently Oil. With Lagos and Eko atlantic . .hmm! Trust me, the West is VERY MUCH FINE! cool

@Your second paragraph
Yes, I am for Southern Nigeria FIRST before West or Odua. My reasons are very simple.
There used to be Southern Nigeria with no wars or ethnic clashes recorded, why can't we have that now?
The Igbos, Yorubas and SSoutherners have our NATURAL advantages and disadvantages BUT other ethnic groups will complement our individual short comings.
Education, sophistication and a sense of progress unities us all in the south. No one really cares about religion in the south. I can go on and on!

@your last
Yes, I don't. Not because I dislike Hausas or anything of that sort. But there are fundamental differences in the way we(the South) think compared to the way the CORE North thinks. To them, its mainly about religion and ruling Nigeria by all means. To us, its mainly about corruption but DEVELOPMENT!

In any case, I suspect that Aboki is the main person to make the proposals to.
He only needs oil and access to the sea, and he will get both if I have my say.  cool
No access to sea and oil in Odua! . .and if to you, I am Yoruba. Then, so be it! I guess Kpogede is also Yoruba, abi??
