Now that is huge. Way f-cking huge. Kudos to Fash. Fashola has stepped up his game big time in the last 6 weeks. Only those that pay rent (I am not talking about people that live in their parent's pad) will understand what a huge relief that piece of legislature is for us. Imagine paying two years in addition to 10% legal and 10% agent. It is just ridiculous. God bless you Fash. I hope he keeps it up though, because a lot of physical /legislative work still needs to be done in Lagos

Politics / Re: Shell Accepts Responsibility For Oil Spills In Ogoniland by jason2010(m): 8:38am On Aug 04, 2011

Ogoniland oil spills: Shell admits Nigeria liability

Oil giant Shell has accepted responsibility for two devastating oil spills in Nigeria's Ogoniland region.

The Bodo fishing community sued Shell in the UK, alleging that spills in 2008 and 2009 had destroyed the environment and ruined their livelihoods.

Their lawyer said they would seek hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for one of the world's "most devastating oil spills".

Shell told the BBC it would settle the case under Nigerian law.
Experts who studied video footage of the spills say they could be as large as the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, when 10m gallons of oil destroyed the remote coastline, the UK's Guardian newspaper reports.

Until now, Shell has claimed that less than 40,000 gallons were spilt in Nigeria, it reports.

'Severe poverty'
Correspondents say the spillage was caused by pipelines which ran through the village.

Shell stopped pumping oil from Ogoniland in 1993 after the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa - who was later hanged - led a campaign against it for allegedly destroying the environment.

Martyn Day, representing the 69,000-strong community, said they would demand "adequate compensation immediately".

"This is one of the most devastating oil spills the world has ever seen and yet it had gone almost unnoticed until we received instructions to bring about a claim against Shell in this country [UK]," he said.

He said the community had three sets of claims.

The first claim - for at least $100m (£61m) - was for to clean up the area.

The second one was for damages to the community land and the final one was for losses suffered by individual families, Mr Day said.

"The Bodo people are a fishing community surrounded by water. What was the source of their livelihood now cannot sustain even the smallest of fish. The spills have caused severe poverty amongst the community.

"Marine life has been devastated within the 2,000 hectares of the creek and the mangroves have been, without exception, destroyed," Mr Day said.

Shell said it accepted the spills were caused by equipment failure and not by sabotage or theft, which it said cause most of the spills in the oil-producing Niger Delta region.

It said it would pay compensation in accordance with Nigerian law but warned it "could take several months to reach a conclusion".

Mr Day said the settlement could set a precedent for other communities in the Niger Delta to seek compensation in British courts.

Communities have repeatedly claimed that international oil firms fail to respect their rights and contaminate their land with oil spills, though the companies dispute this.

The bolded italicized part is a big problem. Why don't the Ogoni community agitate for settlement under the dutch law (Neitherland law) since it is headquartered there? They will never get justice if they settle under 9grian law

Pukkah:

How can anyone in his right senses declare that Mr Jonathan has got no biceps. All hail Mr Jonathan, the strongest and best performing President the country, oops, the world, has ever known.

Mr Jonathan's path is littered with solid and unambiguous achievements that would make any developing country green with envy. In his short time as the people's President, he has clearly positioned Nigeria as an emerging giant: building thousands of kilometres of new roads, rail tracks and bridges, improving security with a re-invigorated Police, curbing inflation rate, interest rate and unemployment. The generators in my house have fallen into disuse, thanks to a 24/7 uninterrupted power supply.

He has boldly tackled the monster called corruption and there's no sacred cow at all. It's not an easy task to list his achievements.

Mr Goodluck is indeed a miracle. I daily thank God for giving me and other Nigerians the rare foresight to vote for him. He's his own man and he's got a very strong spine. All haters should shut up and fall at the feet of the 'transformational' Presido!

You have got to be kidding me, 24/7 uninterrupted power, has boldly tackled corruption? Tell me that you are kidding me, I know you are being sarcastic here

I rarely add comment on NL, we are ignorant and most of the time we make un-informed comments. I am not here to defend the CBN governor. I work in the financial sector and if you know the damage these BDC mallams are doing to the economy you will weep for the country. These BDC mallams buy so much US dollars, failed to render account of how the US dollar was used by way of injection into the economy, they sell to your corrupt politicians who then carry the raw cash $$$$$$ under diplomatic passport to Dubai, China, India and other countries with lenient anti money laundry laws.

More than 80% US Dollar sold by CBN find its way outside Nigeria and that is why despite weakening US Dollar, Naira could not appreciate. If you have a genuine need for US dollar, take your documents to bank and buy at N151 -N154.

Great info brah, but the banks can only sell you so much. I believe that the limit they can sell you at that rate with your travel documents is 4000 usd pta and 5000 usd bta
Business / Re: Naira Now N166 To $1. Can Someone Tell Me What Is Happening? by jason2010(m): 9:02am On Jul 14, 2011
2bosun:

You're joking right??

It has everything to do with the CBN governor and his policies. Nigeria gets revenue in dollars but instead of sharing the allocation in dollars (or certificates). The CBN in their "wisdom" decide to print the Naira equivalent to allocate to states and hoard the dollar revenue. This floods the economy with too much Naira chasing fewer and fewer goods and services. So really, the more revenue is coming in- the weaker the Naira is going to get until it's corrected. Ex- President Yaradua cancelled the dollar allocation account due to his obsession with the rule of law back then.

To make matters worse they end up borrowing the Naira back from banks at a rate of 10% to reduce inflation- it's almost criminal!

At the moment, the CBN sells $400,000 every week to registered Bureau De Change- which illegal smugglers and looters patronize- so the dollar still does not enter the system.

At some point in time, they would have to consider re-denominating the Naira if they really intend on moving this country forward. If not, it's going to be $1=N200 before we know it.

Well said my brother. Prttty scrary that by the look of things the exchange rate might get to $1=N200. Sh----t, we really wish that the limit the CBN is able to lend is 400 thousand USD. The limit that the CBN sells is actually 250K, and I know a few Nigerias that travel abroad with 4 times that much.  There is just not enough dollars in circulation. I just wonder where the loot from the libya war oil boom is going

Pure baloney. The bank is not telling us their reasons why they stopped doing business with RCCG. It can't possibly be because of Nigerian origin. If it is infact because the church is owned by Nigerians, then I smell a lawsuit from RCCG. If I remember correctly, one of those civil rights acts specifically state that It is illegal to discriminate against an individual because of birthplace, ancestry, culture, etc etc.

I hope money laundering ain't the true reasons. Shooo   sad , I can't put nothing past these new gen churches these days

Car Talk / Re: How Important Is Mileage For Nigerian-used Cars: Dealers Please Advise by jason2010(m): 7:11pm On Jul 10, 2011
@ Baron2000: My brother there are two possible reasons why you are getting the car under 2M. The first reason is that the car was definitely accidented or it is was a flood vehicle that was purchase at insurance auctions or accidented car auction (meaning that they got it too damn cheap)

The other reason is that the owner may have decided to take a loss an just do away with the car. For instance last August, I was in dire straits for some cash, so I sold a 2001 Camry for 900,000. Now I took a loss on that car (if you doubt ask some of the fellas on this tread that know what they are talking about) because I bought that car in Chicago for $5000.  That does not mean that the going rate for a 01 camry is 900K, does it?
Car Talk / Re: How Important Is Mileage For Nigerian-used Cars: Dealers Please Advise by jason2010(m): 10:45am On Jul 10, 2011
@ Fhemmy: My man, I appreciate the input, you laid it down big time. Naira to dollar is actually 161.50 to $1 as of Friday last week (and yet there is an oil boom o). Folks also need to understand that milage needs to be taken with a grain of salt. With 3,000 naira, I know folks that can change the millage on the dashboard of any car from 400,000 mile to 65,000 miles or whatever you want it to read. Thats why I am always laughing when people brag to me about thier low milage. Thus any argument telling me that a 300,000 miles car shipped from the US is inferior to a 15,000 miles car in 9ja is null and void, unless in the unlikely event one knows for a fact that the 15,000 miles on the dashboard of the car in 9ja is the actual milage (that is the milage aint been tampered with.

Thanks for the breakdown though

We can go hoarse all we want via screaming our lungs out on the internet or we can type all we want with the largest fonts. Ain't nothing gonna happen. What all the corpers should be doing is start thinking along the lines of setting up an account on NL or facebook, and try to get as much/many people as possible to register, and let their objective be to take a trip to Abuja and baricade the National House Assembly in Abuja. Imagine the effects if over 100,000 young peope block the entrances to the NHA. Thats the only way to resolve all these nonsense. The recent revolution in the middle east started from Facebook.
Politics / Re: Is Fashola Over Celebrated? Or He Is On Vacation by jason2010(m): 9:33am On Jun 23, 2011
Living in Lagos, I think that Fash is seriously overrated. But, going by what his peers (other state governors are doing, which is "nothing"), he appears to be a messiah. The bottom line is the there is so much deterioration in lagos before the man took office. The previous administrations did not do jack, so now Fash is a hero for attemting to just do the minimum (in the land of the blind). But I stilll believe that he can infact do better. I truly believe that Fash is a good man, who means good for Lagos. We are yet to see the best of him. Take a trip to Okoko or Ajegunle before you comment about the great job Fash is doing. Do not just go to Ikeja or the Islands and then start commenting.

My point is that he can definitely do better. There is waaaay too much hype when it comes to Fash. But I still wish my state governor can even do the little that Fash is doing. Abeg make una no insult me for my opinion oh, I carry God dey beg una. It is just my entitled opinion

Business / Re: Customs Discover Sack Of Dollars In Container ($110,000) by jason2010(m): 5:05pm On Jun 22, 2011
I can assure you with a high degree of certainty that the actually amount is in excess of what the customs reported. The rest was stolen by both the customs and wharf rats. The level of theft at the wharf definitily is cause for concern. Dem dey even thief the ones that just don't make sense. For instance two months ago, my golf shoes was taken from a container, and I was even there during the inspection. You wonder if wharf rats play golf. Anyway, that money is way more than $110,000. Think about it, $110,000 is just eleven bundles of notes that can even fit in all the pockets on a khaki pants. So why would somebody in their right minds containerize that amount. $110,000 is not that much that requires containerization. We no dey carry last for this our country oh. I betcha it was way over a mil.

Autos / Re: Nissan Maxima Observation And Advice by jason2010(m): 9:23am On Jun 06, 2011
The answer is simple. They are not as rugged as the Toyotas and Hondas of the world. Those toyotas and hondas can withstand all the bad roads, potholes, gallops, unnecessary street bumps all over lagos. However, the Maximas simply can't do all that. I know this first hand because I currently have an 04 paid up Maxima that I left at my friends house overseas since 2008, that I refused to bring to 9ja because our bad roads and the various floods will kill the car.

Don't get me wrong, the maxima brand is awesome (ONLY IN THE USA or some other countries with great road networks). If you don't not live in Abuja, do not bring that car into this country. You gonna be sorry if you do

this is what you get when an individual with weak and old brain sit in the comfort of his farm and say who occupies which position in the country.
when obasanjo a yoruba man had 8yrs of presidency, we did not see this kind of madness. when this same obasanjo tot it wise to appoint and anoint yar adua a northerner for presidency, we will all agree that this madness was not there. all these things are happening now because of his criminal mind and commitments, he does not have another northerner that he so much trust like yar adua to finish the northerners' 8 yrs hence he controversially brought jonathan on board. let us say the truth and shame the devil. there is a conspiracy here. 8 yrs yoruba and 4 yrs hausa, why? that is cheating and is criminal. how can we be one nigeria when someone wants to be everywhere at all times.
jonathan must be careful with this gift of the devil.

My friend the Northerners have ran this country badly for over 35 years. A South Southerner or even an South easterner (please don't come at me with the Aguiyi Ironsi stuff) has never ruled for onces, and yet thier resources is the life support of this country. I used to support Buhari. (Glad I didn't vote for him or any other Northerner). The hard coded truth is that level don change. Weather una like it or not, there is a new sheriff in town, and it will take forever for the North to see this power again. We are badly in need of development in this country, and it can never be achieved with a northerner in charge. (if you think otherwise Check 38 years of your gaddame history)
Politics / Re: The Hausas (an Alternate Pespective) by jason2010(m): 6:34pm On Apr 21, 2011
@ Nadanbata, My man I totally disagree with you. The problem ain't poverty, PDP, or the elites. I think the problems has more to do with Hausa's way of Life, your religion, and the simple fact that the average hausa man just don't value life. How come the downthroden in my home town , Aba never run the streets killing muslems and Non southerners? I spend quite some time in Kano. As a matter of fact, I left Kano 2 days before the Presido Election. So I know a lot about the way you people (both rich and poor) think and behave. I mean you people flare up over whatever (significant or immaterial) and start killing southerners. Somebody in Neptune or Mars can make a statement about Allah, the next thing we know, you people over here in Northern Nigeria that are millions of miles away from where the event took place, start going nuts. How can you explain, that your daughter who you worked so hard to put through school, who is serving her country as a corper has been murdered by Northerners because you lost the election. Offcourse, your cattle rearing a-ses would not be able to comprehend that, going by the kind of low value yall place of education The only antedot for your a-s is straight up head-on engagement. Believe you me, if we decide to retaliate, it will be ugly, it aint gonna be no dagger sh-t.

I keep wondering with that kind of Northern mentalility, it totally makes sense why u guys ended up running this country into the ground. Abeg save the elite and PDP stuff  for the bird.

Omo_Tier1:

Are you all not tired of this PDP government patch work? Benin-Ore road was awarded by Obasanjo via then minister of work Mr. tony Anenih for a whooping 30bn naira for expansion and complete dualization. This contract never saw the light of the day and to date no one know the where about of that money. Following the massive out cry, this same despotic PDP government re-awarded the contract to Reynolds Construction Company, RCC but RCC failed to deliver citing security as the main reason. The PDP led government thereafter decided to resurface only the failed portions of that road.
If this is what pro-GEJ are celebrating, then NNigeria has a long way to go! That road is a major economic road that any sensible government would give priority attention to hence the reason Oshiomhole is expanding the new lagos road-uselu-ugbowo axis to two main lanes with an adjoining.

To say the obvious, that road resurfacing by RCC would last only a year and lo en behold some portions betweeb Okada and Ugbogui has already began to tear up. To the casual motorist this may not be so obvious especially if your privious experience on that road has been a nightmare.

For all I care, partisan politics apart, this patch work is nothing to glory in instead the government should be pressurized to fully dualized that road with four lanes on both sides.

Omo_tier, the contract was 300 billion naira, not 30 billion naira. By the way, I agree with you with the patch patch on that road because that road was still a hot mess when I travelled to the east in February. Particularly the part between Akure and Efosu, and knowing and considering the 9ja factor, there is no way there could have been a drastic improvement in a couple of months. So I just wish some of our fellow nairalanders would take a trip on the road before they start giving credit
