I have been working on Sociolinguistics (the connection between language and society) for a while now. I'm currently at the doctoral level. I have done ample research on religious and violent cults and gangs in the Western world. The next phase of my research is to look at how language is deliberately used to create "belonging" and remove "outsiders" in Nigerian cult-formations. When I found this thread, I was glad. I learnt some things from the experiences recounted here.

Wow doctoral level, I'm humbled. It's not easy. I have to say that what you posted here is very educating even though I'm not sure it will be of any use to me(no offense) since I'm not interested in learning the language of any cult group, others on the other hand may find it very useful. "Alora" is the traditional call of the Buccaneers. This word precedes their pseudonyms and is akin to pyratical names in PC which are preceded with "Ahoy". You can have weird names like Alora Looting for Fingers, Alora Killer Disciple, Alora Mecca Morocco, Alora Jesus is Coming, Alora Sailing for Treasure, Alora Killer Assistant (THIS IS SOMEONE'S REAL NAME), Alora Pussy Pussy Cat, etc. These names are usually given as part of the initiation process. Some are funny, others are weird, and a few are quite disturbing. The names usually follow the 231 Buccaneer syllabic pattern.

"Awumen", on the other hand, is used as a sort of answer to prayers, declarations, etc.

This thread is turning into something else as the day goes on. First some set of people tried to derail it with their squabbles, now it has gotten to everybody accusing each other of being cultists, investigating and threatening to arrest each other. Others still are asking people to drop location/number so they can go and show their wrestling moves. If nobody else has anything positive to say make dem close the thread abeg.

If you are from Rivers, Edo or Delta, and you are not from a very rich background, there's a 80% tendency that someone in your extended family is a cultist. There is this cousin of mine I love so much, he's a cool guy, goes to church and all that. But with the castings of cult OT here, I am 80% sure he must have been active in cultism activities in school. I am happy he is living a focused life right now. Graduated with even a 2.1. Thank God that whatever cultism he was into wasn't deeply rooted to cause a police, family or hospital issue. As much as I want to wish cultists evil, sometimes I refrain. Why because, if I was to be consistently oppressed by some cultists, there would have been a likelihood I might have blended too. Glad the small oppression I went through was just minor and died down. The ones I dont pity are the cold-blooded ones who do it for power, fame and other stupidities.

Glad someone else has said it. Was going to comment but I saw the way the other guy was being attacked so I kept quiet. A cousin of mine is a bagger, and some of my friends. I too have seen my fair share of it. Now if I were to be shouting death to all cultists that means my cousin and some of my friends will be included and that would make me a hypocrite. So it was 9th(Tuesday) of January early this year, the landlord of the hostel where I stayed came one night asking for rent and of all the rooms in the hostel he locked mine with everything inside that night and left with the keys. I had to go back to the compound where I stayed before moving to the hostel (the room I had there still had some months left on the rent but I moved cos of some issues). The next three days I didn't go to class, soaked garri throughout except two times that I ate with some friends. I later paid half the rent and the room was opened on Saturday. I later found out through my brother who put me in his room in the hostel that it was because he had an issue with the landlord that made him lock only my room that night
