By shunning this debate Buhari proves that he is not a true democrat. This would have been an opportunity for him to engage in one of the basic elements of democracy; debate with other candidates before the country and in the process intimate Nigerians with the overall form of one's manifesto.

It is also disgraceful that many people see nothing wrong with this development. Their claims that Jonathan did it before or that the debate will be rigged is nonsense. Jonathan's boycott of the 2011 debate was condemned by all reasonable people so for Buhari to do same is just as condemnable. Besides this is a debate about the candidates and their plans for Nigeria not a quizz in astrophysics or medival history, nobody can outperform the other because they have been privy to the questions beforehand.

I am not a fan of either candidate neither I'm I the type to follow the crowd but looking at the events of 2011 to the present day, one cannot help but hope for any alternative. PDP has gotten too fat to fight for the masses, GEJ too nice and slow to tackle blood thirsty terrorists and his advisors are too daft to save our crumbling economy, I would like us to think big, let's use our votes to make history, let's use it to send a message to these politicians, that no position is permanent, this election represents perhaps the best opportunity for the Nigerian populace to voice their discontent. My brothers and sisters, forget propaganda, forget religious sentiments, tribalism and all the menacing rhetorics. Think about your future and the future of those that matters to you, do we settle for the same mediocrity or do we at least give change a chance? If the secular nature of this country was upheld at all times no matter who the president is, we will not be where we are today. Boko haram may have come to a head now, but the root cause of this crisis dates back to even before Jonathan goodluck joined politics.

The people of the Middle Belt said they regretted voting for President Goodluck Jonathn during the 2011 general elections.

They said that in spite of their support for the President, they had nothing to show for it.

The Middle Belt people, however, said despite their disappointment, they would still vote for him again in the February 14 general elections.

In a communiqué issued after a summit of the Middle Belt Dialogue in Jos which drew delegates from the Federal Capital Territory, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba and Yobe states, the region said, “There is general anger and disappointment in our communities against the Jonathan-led Federal Government as a result of the sad reality that despite the huge political investment by our people for the purpose of electing him in 2011, there has been no commensurate political patronage in terms of projects and appointments.”

The communiqué, which was signed by the facilitators of the summit – Messrs Aminu Zang, Lanre Obafemi, Rima Shawulu and Mark Jacob – read, “It is obvious that as a result of the huge political investment of our communities in 2011, our communities have been exposed to unimaginable genocide and consequent untold hardship, while governments at the state and federal levels have appeared indifferent to the suffering of our people.

“As a result of the genocide, agriculture which has been the mainstay of the Middle Belt and a major source of economic stability of our people, has been disrupted thereby laying the foundation for food insecurity in the country at large.”
