wat type leverage ? yeah some comp engr can code but not like the comp sci programmers except for the ones with other computer certificates. how many developers has a computer engr degree? In africa comp engr is almost useless and in the outside world u have to be extremely good and still end up working for other engr related companies. the entire IT world is still within the comp sci syllabus (programming, networking & ADC) so wat r we talking abt here. Computer networking is the only restrictive module from either syllabus |

even at dat, how many known computer engineers can u mention in d real world today? one more thing u require a lot more capital to start a company that requires computer Engrs than one that need computer scientist.. u can simply seat in ur house and make money as a programmer You think computer engineers aren't also programmers? That skill isn't mutually exclusive to either career but you certainly have more leverage with computer engineering degree As an EE engineer working as a programmer, i had extensive knowledge of C++/C whilst studying which has since enable me to use that transferable skill to easily pick more programming language needed to succeed in my current role. It's all about pre-requisite knowledge which can be transferred and applied accordingly |

lol did u just say computer sci is restricted? to wat exactly because it encompasses electronics, mathematics, Networking, Programming, Data analysis & algorithms also Database concepts. how is that restricted ? Computer engr is like a sub sect of elect, they do little programming, nd talk more on computer hardware. Zinox is d only company I knw that gives Computer Engr feeling company in Nigeria nd most of their products r still imported Ignore the modules for a sec and think deep on how they are applied in real world alongside industries requiring such knowledge and/or experience I guess your view is valid since Nigeria isn't necessarily a manufacturing economy but it's advisable to always embed flexibility of approach into decision making 1 Like |

Isnt it a waste of time studying computer engineering in Nigeria? Certificates wont teach u everything u need to know abt computer science but just a branch of a course in computer science. Computer engineering encompasses a lot of things as it's a multi-discipline profession whereas Computer science is relatively restricted in absolute terms My argument is, why spend 4 years at a university studying computer science if the skills needed to work as a database analyst is your knowledge and experience of relational programming? |
Career / Re: Difference Between Computer Science And Computer Engineering Course? by jaybee3(m): 1:55pm On Apr 03, 2017 |
Chukwuka16: I realise that anyone with some substantive knowledge can claim to be a data scientist but you get me wrong. You do realise that the key is not just being a scientist but making good and valuable use of such data in decision making. There is a reason data analysts are paid handsomely. The key lies in their ability to take data and be creative with it. Their ability to fairly quantify the contribution of varying factors to a model and achieve some accuracy makes them tick. Furthermore, the ability to be good at establishing a nexus between human behaviour and data models is key. My MS is in EEE with bias in energy management systems optimization and No, I am just seeing the diagram for the first time. You've sort of explained data Visualization which is great but my reason for introducing data science into the argument is so you understand that you don't necessarily need to be an expert in any of the fields required as that will only make you a specialist. All you need is a combination of skills as that's what's required for predictive analysis in machine learning I have a couple of vacancy in the UK if you have the right skills and permission to work in the UK My first degree was in EEE |

Whats d difference between a desktop computer and a standing fan? Electronic devices are devices powered by electric energy. Simple. A computer is a type of electronic device that can accept input and output. An electric fan cannot accept digital input or output errmmm actually some fans are a little more advanced right? Fans have control circuits and don't necessarily rely on conventional switches Your remote controls still rely on digital electronic principles for effective actions Some use PICs which as you know requires programming for it to work |
Career / Re: Difference Between Computer Science And Computer Engineering Course? by jaybee3(m): 1:01pm On Apr 03, 2017 |
Chukwuka16: Very good question @OP. However, you have to do your home work thoroughly. Considering the fact that you want to study in Nigeria, the Engineering option is preferred for the obvious reason that it is a professional course and allows you to become a registered engineer which might be useful in the future. Aside that it offers no further significant benefit. For Computer Science however, it is the 'in thing' now. I have an engineering background for my first two degrees but I'm currently doing a doctorate in CS and I can tell you the opportunities are immense. This is due to the increasingly role of big data and machine intelligence/artificial intelligence/data mining etc. in our decision making process. These research areas are offering a very promising future and Nigeria is really a fertile ground for such disciplines. You may thus consider an engineering option but with dedicated and disciplined focus on learning some programming languages like Python, Matlab, R, C/C++ etc. and further building immense capacity in mathematics/statistics especially problem formulation/modelling and toy with some basic AI program and apply them in basic optimisation problems. What I have been saying is this - do well to graduate with good grades in Comp. Engr but build immense capacity in your programming skills but with practical application to everyday issues. Do not forget to update yourself with the trends in CS (data management and AI) by being a registered student member of IEEE to have access to some open access journals. Also trail papers for free from academia.edu to researchgate on AI/machine learning. You need to do a serious research on what you want and make up your mind. Ultimately, never forget to always consult your creator - God to ask for direction. He made you and thus knows what's best for you. You can never be wrong taking His advice. All the best! You do realise you don't have to be a specialist in any of those fields to be a data scientist right? What's your MSc in? Have you come across this Venn diagram?

Computer Engineering is not about fixing or repairing computers. Dat one is for computer village boys.
Computer Engineering in practical is about designing building hardware systems, and integrating with embedded software.
In a Nigerian uni, you'll be taught basics. You sabi die Embedded systems is the buzz word...Very difficult course that must be mastered before you can make in-roads in the industry I guess a lot of people don't understand the word computer as they automatically assume/conclude it's restricted to personal computers 1 Like |

saladel: Computer scientist are programmers, while computer engineers fix computer problems either software or hardware. A computer engineer can also do communication engineers job and a few of elect elect. You'll learn how to program, but not as much as computer scientists. With a comp engine degree you can also do masters in comp science but you can't do masters in comp engine if you have a bsc in comp science. Comp engine can do most of comp science, communication engineers and elect elect jobs. What's your level of education? Your answer will determine how i respond to your quoted post 1 Like |

Lol,.thats where an Engineer comes in,.if you havent had real life works with that system believe me your knowledge in Engineering (troubleshooting from the start of the circuit)wount kick in.
Another thermal guy never had his installation cooling to expectation after all checks.
but what he never knew and was never in the manual is that for every bend on the pipe on the lenght of run adds and additional leght to the total length of run of the pipe to be used.he ends up using more than the total lenght stipulated for the unit thereby reducing cooling.
what am saying is,if you havent been there forget the manual there are extreamly little details that if you havent encounterd them on the site you will always get that you design and all wrong.
Do you need real life work with a system to check if you are getting the expected output? You employ a single step approach to fault finding when dealing with a complex system without a monitoring control unit. |

TheLordIsGr8: Find an electrician in your area and register as an apprentice.
Start now and continue till you graduate. Dabble into video game consoles, flatscreens and computers if you can. In other words, experiment with as many things as you can. There is no shortage of electrical panels for you to experiment with.
Go to youtube and watch videos if you have data.
Don't miss the electrician part. That is where you get the best practical knowledge.
Thank me later. Electrical/Electonic Engineers aren't technicians bro. Engineers are meant to be designing/delivering solutions to identified problems 9 Likes |

I do but all am saying is that a 3rd class is not a death sentence in fact it's a wake up call.... A call to find an alternative, a call to seek btw plan B - Z, a call that opens one's eyes to so much hidden and beneficial potentials..... It isn't a death sentence and it's almost certainly inconsequential/irrelevant as a determinant factor in predicting life's possible outcomes Having said that though, you shouldn't underplay the importance of having a competitive edge when you can't factor practical experience to tip you over the scale No right or wrong answer but the statement that you are more likely to be on a successful trajectory with a solid education is factual 1 Like |
