JackBizzle: Thanks.
I have explained myself on this issue and my opinion is based off of seasoned lawyers who have worked across Nigeria.
Thanks for resorting to making claims without any sensible evidence or logic. The buffoon here is evident. The evidence is glaring. Here's advice you would do well to heed. It's better to be quiet and be thought a f0ol than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Seasoned lawyers working across Nigeria my foot! You'd be hard pressed to find a lawyer that is strictly confined to his jurisdiction. You should stop embarrassing yourself. |

JackBizzle: Sir,
Thank you for pointing out the incompleteness of my arguments.
I was in a haste and just pointed out simple facts showing how confusing law can be.
Fleshing out my original 4 points and rebutting your arguments;
1) It is a fact that most people do not understand the law. The issue here is that law is a profession and therefore legal advice should come from a professionally qualified lawyer. Given the corrupt and 419 nature of scammers on nairaland, any fool can claim to be a lawyer and mislead any of those 90% of people that do not know the law. Are you going to beg Seun to verify everyone that gives legal advice? How do you ascertain who is a qualified lawyer on an anonymous forum
2) It is a fact that no lawyer can guarantee 100% chance of winning in most cases. What you need to understand is that technicalities and loopholes are many in law- too many for not only laymen but lawyers as well. That is why you see lawyers doing weeks of research before a big case. Lawyers in the UK do not do "internet consultation". You have to go to their offices and discuss the details of your case. Explaining your case well to your lawyer is important to winning in court.
3) Yes, lawyers only know the law up to a certain degree. A lesser degree than doctors know medicine. The law can change on a daily basis. Every judge's decision is a potential precedent for another case. States, counties and countries pass laws at different times. Medicine, accounting etc other professions are not as volatile.
4) Second opinions in medicine mostly end up getting similar conclusions because doctors universally understand the human body in the same way. The same in Accounting- there are international standards that all chartered accountants know. Law is another thing entirely- A case can be won or dismissed on numerous grounds. It takes only one technicality to get away with certain crimes. It is better to go to the office of your lawyer and explain your case.
=========================================================
There are so many disadvantages to having a legal section on nairaland
1) Legal advice should be only given by qualified lawyers. How do we verify qualified lawyers?
2) Law in Nigeria is in shambles. We dont even keep records of many decisions by judges. Since you are a lawyer in Nigeria, please tell me how many court records or transcripts do you have from the state high courts knowing that a judge's decision in a court can set precedence for future court cases.
3) Trolling. Family cases, property cases etc should normally be kept private. Imagine someone seriously trying to get his house in order through the court and some fool comes to start laughing because a man has lost some of his assets.
=================================================
If you want to talk about human rights. Lets have a human rights section. A legal section is dangerous. Your fleshed out argument is even worse than the other one. You're asking of records, ever heard of law reports? Record of proceedings? Look I have neither the time nor the inclination to hold your hands through this discussion. I see no reason to think that a legal section would be dangerous. The fact that someone seeks advice does not prevent a person from visiting a law office. I doubt I would reply further but I'd like you to bear in mind that there is a health section here where people seek advice on their health issues and some people also market solutions. To the best of my knowledge, Seun has not verified any doctor on this forum, yet people have been seeking and giving advice. It's an informal forum, there's going to be good and bad advice. There will be trolls too. Does that mean that it has no use? How do you enforce Human Rights if not by law? And by discussing cases, I didn't mean discussing details of ongoing cases. I meant for instance sourcing authorities that might apply to a case. |

JackBizzle:

Engineer? Bwahaha.
Law is a profession. A legal section on any Nigerian forum will cause serious problems given that 1) 90% of people do not understand the law If this is true, there's no better case than for having a legal section than your first point. Nigeria has no strengthened legal system. Police and the military operate with impunity violating fundamental Human Rights and the population accepts it as normal. They pay bail money without knowing their rights and you say there is no need for a legal section? We can have a sexuality section but a legal section is not necessary? Property owners take advantage of people who don't know their rights and we don't need a legal section? 2) The lawyers themselves can never guarantee a 100% chance of winning most cases I'm not sure how this makes sense or what point it's supposed to illustrate. At best it shows your limited understanding of the operation of the law. Cases are won by proving with evidence and backing up your position with the law. There is never a "draw" in a case. If two lawyers feel they have proof, they go to court to establish it and the judge listens to both and gives a decision one way or the other. If all lawyers agreed there would be no need for court appearances. Besides there are little instances of procedure and technicalities that are not known by the layman. We have a pet section and a sexuality section but somehow we don't need a legal section? 3) The lawyers themselves only understand the law to a certain degree Doctors, mechanics, Engineers, etc only understand their professions to a certain degree. What is clear however is that they understand it better than the layman. No point here. We have a dating and meet up section, a pet section, a sexuality section but there's no need for a legal section? 4) Two lawyers trying to secure a client can give contradictory assurances on a case In medicine, there's something called a second opinion. Contradictory assurances are not unheard of. Try giving your car to two mechanics and watch them contradict themselves. Law is application, and that's what the court is for: to settle issues of the law. If all lawyers agreed with each other there would be no need to go to court. You might as well settle issues in the beer parlour or family meeting. No need for judges either. We have the whole nairaland and no legal section? I'm not sure what you think but the legal section isn't for soliciting for clients. It's for people to come ask questions about legal issues pertaining to them and to get them solved. For instance, how many times have we seen on front page "look what I found in an unopened bottle of coke/malt/beer" etc. Go to the property section and look at people who don't know what to do to prevent being scammed by land vendors. Look at the auto section and see people being scammed by Cotonou car agents. The list goes on. Also lawyers could hang out in the legal section and discuss their cases , seek and share advice. In the end, nairalanders would benefit. When you come here all small minded talking about legalese, I wonder what you're on about. DeepSight, Enigma, Kay17 are all lawyers on this section. They have different styles of expressing themselves but I cannot remember anytime any sort of legalese came up in discussions. Caveats are important when arguing against people who are great at building strawmen. Caveats don't count as legalese. |

God used to appear to people. Adam and Eve, Moses, Gideon, to name a few. Those were good times.
God no longer appears to people these days, he prefers to appear on toast, bathroom walls and other blurry and unreliable media. The only other thing that goes for his presence is claims by people of uncertain mental capacity that they received a revelation from God.
These are personal claims that are not objectively verifiable and can only be believed by those desperate enough to clutch at the slightest evidence.
Again I'll ask OP, why the double standards? |

truthman2012: With what catholic are doing today, I don't believe they are on the right track. Their pope said Jesus was drunk. He went to Saudi Arabia and prayed islamically. Why do they still call themselves Christians? The Pope never said that! You really shouldn't believe everything you hear or read. |
Islam › Re: Why Muhammad Could Not Do Miracles by jayriginal: 9:27pm On Jan 10, 2016 |
truthman2012: Good observation.
Jesus taught the disciples the Lords prayer that included asking for forgiveness of sin when they were new in faith. Everything in the Lord's prayer was a prayer that is expected to form part of Christians' lives after maturity. After the advent of the Holy Spirit, the disciples began a life of perfection in Jesus and no need for repetition of the Lord's prayer. One of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to empower man to live holy. This is why Penticostals don't recite the Prayer because a Christian is not supposed to be sinning and asking for forgiveness. A 'true' Christian commits sin inadvertently and not as a habit.
Rom. 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we CONTINUE in sin, that grace may abound?
The answer to that question is 'no'. That means a man of God is not expected to continue sinning and asking for forgiveness.
I John 3:9 No one born of God makes a PRACTICE of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he CANNOT keep on sinning because he has been born of God.
As you can see, a man of God is not expected to make sin a habit like Muhammad did. As it was written, Jesus said when you pray, pray like this. It wasn't written that they should pray like that initially. That is why Catholics and Anglicans still use the Lord's prayer. It's also funny that you refer to other sources to explain something Jesus supposedly spoke clearly about. |
