Kobojunkie: Anywho, my original comment, in response to @Stillwater, was not directed solely at trafficked beings but at Nigerians in general. We need to learn to take more advantage of the law, and that way we can help educate others on what their rights are in the new world. It is then up to them to choose to use that information to get out of their situation, or accept their fate.
are you an attorney?
seems like you will be a great candidate to start an NGO representing these girls.
Kobojunkie: I cannot for the life of me understand why any girl, illegal or none, would choose to remain a slave, simply because she is afraid of being unemployed. That does not compute . . . not at all.
I don't think the girls are as silly as you paint them. maybe for the luckier girl, a client might fall in love and marry her. or an italian family might take her in. but for most, the opportunity probably isn't there. they have to survive somehow abi. see how they all claim to be "hairdressers" whose hair are they dressing? I doubt there is much opportunity for gainful employment over there for most. to me, they shouldn't even have been brought to italy in the first place.
the police ought to clamp down on the traffickers and pimps/ or mafia whatever they called them in the documentary. They are not doing enough at all.
Kobojunkie: Even smuggled girls(illegal slaves)can, in so many western states, use the law to in the land they find themselves to get away from their masters
u have a point but most of these girls are trafficked from rural villages not law school.
besides, the main problem for these nigerians in italy seem to be a lack of employment opportunities. even illiterate illegal mexicans in US can find work on farms or menial labor. the nigerians in d documentary seem to have their options limited to prostitution, drugs and crime.
Something we should also try to think about is that some of these girls got to italy underaged and helpless. Let's expose the pimps and traffickers as well. The latter are the ones mostly responsible for, and benefiting from this sex trade.
Oba234: Agreed overtime, the descendants of these immigrants are going to assimilate in to the American culture to the point that all they will know is my great grand parents were from Nigeria. That's the price you pay when you decide to move to America. Even the hispanics are going to assimilate overtime.
Well of course. They probably granted her tenure so as not to lose her to a higher bidder another University. She is an Achebe after all. but 39 isn't all that young. that's basically 40. still a bit young for your average tenured professor though.
AjanleKoko: For most retirees, they just want to keep busy and stay relevant. After years of hustle and bustle, they don't want to be idle. Ironically, according to Zig Ziglar, the fear of being idle is a manfestation of low self-esteem. In his book, See You At The Top, he postulates that a person with low self-esteem can't stand to be idle or inactive. Food for thought, I think.
huh? I don't get it. maybe they enjoy working. or they're doing what they love. I would be very bored if I was idle or inactive for a long time. people who retire and become idle die earlier than those who remain active through hobbies or other work.
his full title: "His Majesty Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings (Emperor) of Ethiopia, Elect of God"
Check out Idi Amin's full title: "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular"
a lot of african dictators had those kind of self delusions.
