I'm on the side of the masses.

the internet really has been revolutionary and i'm surprised it has taken up to now for the govt to try to censor it. China was smarter. I think they censored it from day 1.
People are brainwashed anyway. with a plethora of sites and info to be gained, most still choose to spend most of their time on facebook, WoW or nairaland  tongue
but I can't complain. sites like twitter, facebook and nairaland have help spread the 'revolutions'. They have been useful in more important ways [s]like connecting me to such a @#%$&&^ like Kobojunkie [/s]  tongue cheesy grin angry
WebmastersUs Congress Plan To Censor The Internet by Jenifa1(op): 1:47am On Nov 19, 2011
If you use Mozilla Firefox, you might be familiar with this story. It describes how "the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could profoundly affect the future of the internet."* The so-called Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA, if passed into law, will magnify internet censorship to an unprecedented scale. Yes, internet censorship does already exist to some extent and if you are a Youtube viewer like me, you might already be aware of this fact.

One main usefulness of the internet since its inception, just a few decades ago, is its ability to allow for an unprecedented accessibility to a myriad of  free information. With the lowering cost of access, as well as the emergence of social media, more people -especially the young- are more connected to others and to unmonitored information than ever before. The internet has been partially responsible for the several political revolutions that have occurred around the world this year alone. These uprisings, which have been powerful enough to unseat presidents, are examples of how the internet can be a tool for not only organizing people around a political cause but also bringing hidden information to light. The US govt, still dealing with the aftermath of Wikileaks, has now had to concern itself with the nuances of Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protests. For these reasons, it is quite obvious why the US congress is pushing to censor the internet. Its security is threatened and at stake if information reaching the masses is not controlled or filtered. It is the same fear that is behind China's severe information censorship.

The US prides itself as a model democratic government. Do you think it is right in attempting to censor the internet? This censorship will also affect non -US residents since the US is the primary source of a large quantity of information digested by many people around the world.

TV/MoviesRe: Is Nollywood Rivaling Black Hollywood? by Jenifa1: 12:59am On Nov 19, 2011
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. . . .

these black nollywood stars will overshadow nigerian ones. esp because of our inferiority complex about it. we are always trying to emulate them at the expense of losing our originality. if we start collaborating with them, before we know it, nollywood will completely disappear in the shadow of "black hollywood"
this is why I currently only watch yoruba movies. nollywood is no longer the classic nollywood of the mid-late 90s. sadly

LagosShia:
@aloy@emeka

firstly osun state is a majority muslim state.

secondly hijab does not obstruct or contradict uniform.it is a moral dress code that compliments any uniform for girls .

thirdly, you should not be complaining about "islamization of osun schools".you should be complaining about christianization of schools in osun and missionary activities there.

fourthly, you have in osun a christian missionary teacher flogging a muslim student over hijab while another teacher reported a muslim student to the police for the same hijab.this is religious persecution against muslims.the government should brought both the teachers and the police officer to the law.

fifthly, these schools are government schools.they are for all nigerians be they muslims or christians.and freedom of religion is guarateed.

sixthly, people keep saying how yoruba muslims are tolerant and peaceful.yet we have christian extremists reward their peaceful nature with hate and provocation.

seventhly, must you always feel threatened at the sight of muslims even peaceful ones practicing their faith?recently it was islamic banking that brought out christian fanaticism, now it is hijab in a majority muslim yoruba state.it shows that you do not tolerate anything islamic.it is time the yoruba muslims realize what the Quran says in one context:"the jews and the christians would never be pleased with you (muslims) until you follow their way".the fanatical christians in nigeria are showing exactly that.they display ignorance about islam and they are very intolerant and brainwashed and hateful too.

eigthly,no one here is forcing christian students to wear hijab.so why deprive muslims from practicing their faith?who is violating whose right here?
excellent points.
EducationRe: Schools Shut Down In Osun Over Hijab by Jenifa1: 12:25am On Nov 19, 2011
Why shut school down because a muslim is wearing hijab and leave school open to tens of catholics wearing rosary around their neck.
Can't you see the hypocrisy in your posts.
let's learn to think rationally rather than out of simple minded bigotry and hatred of muslims.
This is the kind of "divide and conquer" actions that ruin a people. I assume a lot of the haters here are igbo trying to divide the yorubas.

and we wonder why boko haram is going strong. when we are the ones perpetuating the idea that school education is for christians only. When you turn muslims away from school and you don't expect them to turn against you.

moderate weight (for body frame) is the best.

too skinny / too fat is ugly

and for whoever said skinny people look good in all clothes. that is WRONG  grin
skinny people look good in most western clothes. but put them in iro and buba and most traditional clothing, it looks  lipsrsealed
curvy/fatter women tend to look better in native attire than skinny women.

I don't know any christian sect whose religious law demand that they wear veils to cover their head in public. except nuns who are much older.
but catholic students sometimes wear that rosary thing around their necks. that is allowed!
My stance is banning all religious attire whether it Cherubium and Seraphim or muslim or Guru Maharaji uniform. If students show up in school wearing hijabs, Guru maharaji gowns, olumba olumba vests, etc, how will the school look?.
See how your ignorance is showing on full display.
how can you compare hijab to celestial church uniform.
hijab is not a "uniform" like a school or church uniform you take off when you get home from school or church.
Hijab is for everyday, all day as long as you are in public (for those that observe it).

and you can always wear your hijab over your uniform. or use a color that match the uniform. girls did that at my secondary school in lagos. and look presentable. some just wore scarfs rather than hijab. And many more muslims don't observe the hijab at all. It depends on how conservative they are with their practices.

Similar to christians with Deeper life not using relaxer, jewelry etc. It's a way of life really. not just religion per se.

Why are they even making noise over something they didn't contribute a penny towards its actualization?.
I'm suggesting that people like you should respect rights of muslims irrespective of the "name" of schools they attend. The fact that it's called "methodist grammer school" doesn't mean muslims can't wear their hijab to it. You might as well ban catholics from wearing their rosaries to school. or even ban them from attending. The school is public not christian.
the name is just part of history which obviously changes dramatically over time and is far removed from present realities

Lots of schools in the US with christian names and histories but guess what, the bible isn't even allowed in school anymore today. but they still keep the name.
this can't happen in Nigeria of course (we are a very religious people) and I hope it doesn't lol
Public schools have a code of conduct in southWestern Nigeria and religion is not part of it. What will then happen to the school uniform is mujslims are allowed to wear hijab, Christians are allowed to wear veil, pagans are allowed to wear draws, etc?. There are private and religious schools in Nigeria if muslims insists that their daughters must wear hijab, they can send them to muslim schools and if any Christian girl is enrolled in that school, she must abide their rules or look for another school. What will they demand for next if they are allowed to wear hijab?.
Do you live in Mars or what!?

All public schools I attended/visited in Lagos have a few students wearing hijab. Every morning at assembly we do worship and prayer  (we alternate days between christians and muslims). A lot of muslims attend public school because they are poorer. so that's where they are actually more visible.
Schools (private and public) in lagos end at 1pm on Fridays to observe Jimoh (muslim prayer).
Religion is a part of education in all parts of Lagos. Majority of schools do worship and prayer in the morning. and closing recitation "now the day is over, glory to the father" at the end of the day for primary schools (public and private).  And proselytizing is rampart in secondary schools -usually among born again christian students or SU as we called them.
Also have you ever heard of CRK or IRK? (chrstian/islamic religious knowledge)? These are regular classes in many lagos public schools. religion is part of the syllabus  too.

You must be out of your mind to say religion is not part of public schools "code of conduct"!!

What's your obsession with yoruba people anyway.
I'm sure igbo catholics are allowed to wear their rosaries around their necks and such.

The problem started last year, when a female student of Methodist Grammar School, Iwo, wore hijab to school.
This thread is senseless.
Iwo is a muslim town

The larger Osun might be 4% (which I doubt) but Iwo is VERY muslim.

The school is called "methodist grammer school" so I can understand where the noise is coming from. There is most likely a high population of muslims at that school and the tension must have been strong. But still. I think enough is enough. Naija is not under colonialism anymore.we have denied muslims formal education for the longest time. We see the results today in the form of poverty and "boko haram" Let's not continue the colonizer's legacy of granting education only to natives who convert to christianity. That's why muslims associate education with anti-islam.
we don't want boko haram in the south. So let the muslims get their education in peace.
