chiomilisa: madam jethro thank you. I will raise those ones touching the ground. but as per irregular watering, since august 31st I planted them it has been raining all through. it just stopped for like 4 days here in asaba It can also be attributed to too much water. Water melon don't want too much water. Technisem products are good. It now depend on where you source it. |
Agriculture › Re: My Watermelon Is Rottening by jethro2: 3:38pm On Nov 07, 2015 |
Its probably due to too much and irregular watering. If its mainly on the side touching the ground, try using grass to mulch so it will not have direct contact with the soil |
Agriculture › Re: Things You Need To Have Before You Venture Into Any Kind Of Farming by jethro2: 3:34pm On Nov 07, 2015 |
Kalusam: Lucrativeness of farming has been promoted by several bloggers, newspapers and "Agribusiness Consultants", so much that everyone, young and old, rich and poor, men and women are trooping towards it, in many cases blindly. This interest in farming is a good sign, but the concerns of what really drives young people towards farming remain. Below are 5 things to posses before going all out on agriculture in order to reap the much mentioned success in the sector. 1. Information/knowledge. How much knowledge about farming do you possess. Like any other profession, farming requires expertise, in fact it requires a great deal of expertise because of the dynamic aspects of agriculture. Information such as weather patterns, what crop to farm on what soil and when and how do one get the best market, are very important. If you are truly keen on going into farming, roll up your sleeves and learn first. 2. Passion. How much do you want to farm? What motivates you to become a farmer. Many young people are lured into the trade with the glossy stories of success in the media without acknowledging the potentially disastrous risks involved. If you are not so much into it, the returns wont be too much into you either. Without passion, you may totally lose interest and miss out of the opportunities in the Agribusiness sector after a first failed attempt. 3. Capital. Young people interested in farming encounter their first hurdle in terms of capital. This is normal. Remedy for this can be found in the many agricultural support loans being given out by organizations, banks and even the government. The most important thing is the information on how to access these financial services. However, I personally advise you make some money first from other sectors before venturing into farming, or if you have friends and family who will be ready to invest in you and your dreams then you are good to go! 4. Total Commitment. There is a new crop of young farmers who engage in farming “via proxy”, mobile phone farming or absentee farming. From my personal experience, this does not work at all. Even if you have a good farm manager, there a number of things that will go wrong without your actual presence. For greater rewards in farming, you need to be on site. If you are very busy, I advise you start out a small farm near your house, even on concrete floors you can grow in bags or plastic containers. 5. Persistence. You are more likely to be disappointed by your farm in the beginning. This is called the learning period and giving up should not be an option. Wrap the failures under the folder of experience and use it to become better. It is important to expect misfortunes and be ready for them. Just remember NEVER give up, even if you fail several times in your farming attempt despite receiving previous training know one thing...you are building yourself up for greater things, when other farmers see dangers you will see opportunities, those periods you will be the only one taking to the market and make good profit. Well said. Writing from experience |

crystalf: Please help what's wrong with these Tomatoes There has been a lot of challenges with tomato planting this year. Both in the North and in the South west. The Northerners nicknamed third tomato Ebola while the south west are yet to find a tangible solution. Even Dangote tomato was not spared. My ranting is for you to do more research of what is happening in your area. Check other farmers farm if they are also having the same challenges. Ask questions around. Tomato is a very delicate crop that needs good care and attention. What happens in one location can not be related to another location. Every area with their own challenges. |

calebadex: Make sure your tomatoes seedlings spend minimum of 4wks in d nursery so dat u can hav healthy plants. Make ur heaps wen u see dat ur nursery is ready for transplant. Plant immediately after heaping. Try to do d weeding after 7wks of transplant. Note: -Is very likely for d plant to encounter a disease call [aluro] , d plant will suddenly started drying frm d root. If u experience such, dat means the nitrogen in d soil is too much. -It is possible for ur plant to grow well without fruiting very well, the plant will be green and strong very well, bt it will nt bring much flowers for fruiting. Dat means d phosphorous[p] in d soil is low while d potassium[k] is normal. Datz y it is advisable to knw ur soil PH before starting d farm. Note: We continue on d disease during flowering next time. Tomatoes needs time and hard-work. I will suggest you pause the tomato training and concentrate on your plantain. Most of what you wrote about tomatoes are quite misleading. Please work more on your tomato stuff. |

calebadex: brother, i will nt advice u to go into dry season tomatoes, because its harder dan d normal season. but, prepare till next year. You will make it by God grace. Okro is gud. Yes, dry season tomato is the hardest but the best and the most lucrative for those that can endure. Rainy season is not ideal for tomatoes because tomatoes abhor too much water. |

noblefarm: OK. I did tomato last month but d tin was bad I said I won't do tomatoes again. I have 10acres am clearing now for dry season vegetables I plan planting okro on the 10acres, what do u think? Most tomatoes seed don't do so well in rainy season. Its advisable to get some basic trainings and knowledge before venturing into tomato planting. No online lecture can successfully grow tomato. |

How often do I irrigate? 4. Staking and mulching my tomato farm Why do I need to mulch? What is mulching? What can I use to mulch? Why do I need to stake? What type of staking is good for my crop? Which one comes first? Staking before transplanting or transplanting before staking 5. Fertigation/fertilizer application Must I use fertilizer? What type is the best? Where can I source for it? What's the difference between organic and conventional fertilizer? How do I make my own organic fertilizer? What quantity of fertilizer do I need to apply? How do I apply fertilizer?
