Jobs/VacanciesRe: Employer Demanding Security Fee From Me On Freelancer by JetStar: 12:53pm On Apr 23, 2021
Freelancer is a great place for fraudsters. The site does little to curb the menace that's why there's proliferation of fraudulent activities.

Another bad side of the platform is that there are a lot of low pay jobs on it. As a tip avoid working for Asians (or anyone with Asian sounding name - even if their profile shows they're from the United States or Europe don't work for them).

When you're offered a job try to know who owns it. If the job is owned by a third party who you cannot communicate with then reject it. Such jobs are not worth your time.

Lastly, before you chose to work for anybody, ask them to create an milestone and fund it first before committing your time to the job. Do not take any test - it is a popular way of scamming an unsuspecting person.

The recent changes in CBN policy means that any remittance/fintech companies will not be allowed to convert your forex earnings to Naira. They are only allowed to give you the forex that was sent to you. This has led to the banning of popular fintechs such as TransferWise (known as Wise). For those working on popular sites such as upwork/freelancer/fiverr how have this affected you? Have you found a payment provider that works for you in 2021 (after the policy was implemented)?

The reason why this guy is talking like this is because he's not employed by Trump. In the United States each state has its own police force and each state collects its own tax from its citizens. That's the reason for such audacity. In Nigeria, no policeman can do that because they're property of the Federal government.

SportsSouth Korean Football Club Fined $81,300 After Filling Stands With 'sex Dolls' by JetStar(op): 11:43am On May 21, 2020
(CNN) South Korean football team FC Seoul has said it has been handed a 100 million KRW ($81,300) fine after being accused of placing sex dolls in its stands to add to the atmosphere during a closed match.

Sporting events around the globe have been halted because of coronavirus, but South Korea's K League is one competition that is pushing ahead with matches without spectators.
But FC Seoul sparked controversy on Sunday during its home match against Gwangju in South Korea's top football championship, with the club being accused of using sex dolls to fill its stands.
The club apologized and the K League has handed down a 100 million KRW ($81,300) fine over the incident, according to a spokesperson for the team.
FC Seoul told CNN on Thursday it would "humbly accept" the decision.
The K League did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.
Fans who tuned in to the second game of the delayed K League season at the weekend were surprised to see a number of dolls in the stands.
The dolls were in the stands for Sunday's game against Gwangju.
Some of the figures were holding signs for a company that makes sex dolls, and fans pointed out that they looked like adult dolls rather than mannequins.
"Honestly, if you saw the mannequins you should have thought they were strange," wrote one fan on Instagram.
Others were incredulous that no one at the club had noticed the issue.
"The female mannequin dressed in a white short sleeve t-shirt, the breast excessively stood out, and the nipples were protruding, but you didn't know they were an adult product?" wrote another fan on Instagram. "You are kidding me."
In response, the club issued an apology on Instagram and Facebook.
"Regarding the cheer mannequins that were installed during the game on the 17th, we sincerely apologize for causing deep concern to the fans," the statement said.
FC Seoul apologized to fans over the dolls.
FC Seoul explained that although the dolls were made to look like real people, rather than conventional mannequins, it had checked they were "not at all related to adult products" before agreeing to install them, and had been told they would be mannequins of the kind commonly used to model clothes.
Staff "went through the confirmation process that they were not adult products several times," said the statement, and didn't notice that an ad for adult products was visible on the day of the game.
"This is our fault without excuse," said the club. "Regardless of the reason, we apologize again for causing great concern to the fans who love and cheer for FC Seoul."
The South Korean K League is one of just a handful of football leagues currently playing matches after the world game was largely shut down by the pandemic.
Germany's Bundesliga has also restarted, with teams playing in empty stadiums.
Other leagues are grappling with the question of restarting competitions that were postponed.
Some football authorities, including those in France, have decided to cancel the 2019/2020 season.
However Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A are still considering their options, while on Monday England's Premier League edged closer to restarting as its clubs voted in favor of resuming training.

TravelRe: 17 FG Airports Not Viable, May Shut Down Over Losses by JetStar: 8:56am On May 11, 2020
Do you know why this is the case in Nigeria. I think it is the sheer lack of domestic flights due to the unafforadable costs by most of the middle class Nigerians. If a middle class Nigerian wants to travel a distance of 500km, they would rather take a rickety bus instead of a plane. this explains the low volume of flights in many of the Nigerian airports. Airports need electricity to run, they need workers to keep the place running, and they need businesses to keep it running. Sorry to say this, there are many places that are not just ready for airports but governors are the problem. Because they want to impress their citizens, they won't mind build one big infrastructure that most of their citizens will never be able to use. If a governor invest his state money on renewable energy or roads or agriculture, almost everyone can benefit from it. But infrastructure such as airports and railways are very expensive (railways in particular) and they seem to be only for the "rich people" (in the Nigerian language).

In the United States, there are lots of domestic flights. Many Americans won't use a vehicle if they're considering travelling a distance of over 500km. that's what boost the airport revenue.

Well, the cost of flights is to blame.

PoliticsCOVID-19: IMF Approves $3.4bn Emergency Support For Nigeria by JetStar(op): 10:41pm On Apr 28, 2020
The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday approved $3.4 billion in emergency financial assistance to support the Federal Government in addressing the severe economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The financial assistance, ‎approved under the Rapid Financing Instrument‎, is also to enable Nigeria to address the sharp fall in oil prices.

The Federal Government had requested an emergency financial assistance of $3.4bn (100 per cent of quota) under the RFI to meet urgent balance of payment needs stemming from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The financial support is expected to limit the decline in international reserves and provide funds for targeted and temporary spending increases aimed at containing and mitigating the impact of the pandemic.

Following the Executive Board’s discussion of Nigeria, Mr. Mitsuhiro Furusawa, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair, ‎noted that the COVID-19 outbreak – magnified by the sharp fall in international oil prices and reduced global demand for oil products – had severely impacted economic activity in Nigeria.

Furusawa said, “These shocks have created large external and financing needs for 2020.

“Additional declines in oil prices and more protracted containment measures would seriously affect the real and financial sectors and strain the country’s financing.”

He noted that the IMF Executive Board welcomed immediate actions taken by the Federal Government in response to the crisis.

“The short-term focus on fiscal accommodation would allow for higher health spending and help alleviate the impact of the crisis on households and businesses.

“Steps taken toward a more unified and flexible exchange rate are also important and unification of the exchange rate should be expedited,” he added.

The Mambilla hydropower project costing just 6 billion dollars with a capacity of 3 gigawatts is over price . Siemen supplied 3 x 4.8GW power plants to Egypt at the cost of $9billion. Ethiopia Millennium hydroelectric dam will cost $4 billion and generate 6GW
The type of power plant matters a lot. In the case of Siemens I think that was gas powered plants. They are much cheaper because of the technology involved. As for hydro, it requires lots of on site contruction and building of water turbines and also the settlement of displaced people. The construction part adds to the cost of hydro technology. In the case of Nigeria, they borrowed money from China and that attracts interest. I'm thinking the deal is more like hire purchase deal where you buy now and pay a huge sum over the years - something like what car dealers are doing.
PoliticsRe: Should Africa Consider The Nuclear Energy Route? by JetStar: 11:21am On Apr 22, 2020
Africa should consider the nuclear option for its energy needs? Hmmmm...... that's not only scary but it doesn't make sense for now. Nukes have the following challenges

1. They are very expensive: Have you seen the costs of nuclear power projects across the world? The price can go as high as 6 dollar per a watt if you pay for it without borrowing. If you need some financing, then it's going to be as high as 10 dollar per a watt. Just an example: the United Kingdom is currently having a Hinkley C power plant being built in sommerset. That plant costs about 23 billion pounds. The initial price is just around 18 billion pounds but it was later revised to 23 billion pounds so that the project could be completed in time. Whats the power rating of hinkley C? Just 3 gigawatts. Now compare that to the planned Mambilla hydro power project costing just 6 billion dollars with a capacity of 3 gigawatts costing just around 6 billion dollars!!!!! For now african countries don't have the financial horsepower to fund a nuclear power plant project.

2. They are quite risky: Anything goes wrong with nuclear and you will be looking at an almost irreparable damage and reputation. For now, the nuclear tech currently in use are not advisable since they generate long term waste (lasting millions of years). Even in developed countries, where to dump the nuclear waste is currently being challenged and communities in the us are protesting against it.

The only good thing about nuclear power is the fact that they have an almost perfect capacity factor (producing power round the clock 24 hours in a day 7 days in a week) This is unlike natural gas, nuclear, wind, hydro or solar energy systems which could run out of "fuel" for the long term. Yes, it is true that nukes don't emit carbon, but they have far more dangerous waste that could last for an eternity.
EducationRe: With 8m. Should I Run An Msc Prog., Go For A Pilot Course Or Do Business? by JetStar: 7:47pm On Apr 19, 2020
brainz360:
Hello guys, as a fresh graduate with a 2:2 grade, which would you advice I do or would you rather opt in for among the three to have a successful career in the near future?
In Nigeria, 8 Million naira is big money - and yes, spending that for your education in Nigeria feels like it's too much if you're considering the government owned schools. But if you want to study abroad (or in some private schools in Nigeria) that money is almost nothing. it might barely go through for tuition fees in the US and UK. Now if you want to spend all that money for your studies, then a good question to ask is where am I going to get jobs? How much will I get paid. Because it doesn't make sense to spend 8m on MSc alone and at the end of the day, you only get jobs of 150k jobs per month - that doesn't feel like good investment.

You want to consider business? That's another risky aspect. You'll need to consider the cost of doing business and the risks involved.
A pilot program? Well, that has its own risks.

The take home here is simple. Follow what you're interested in. But make sure your plans are such that will be sustainable in the long term. Remember, you are talking about your career here.

HealthCoronavirus: Discos, FG Agree On 2 Months Free Electricity For Nigerians by JetStar(op): 12:01am On Apr 09, 2020
The Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on Wednesday said they have aligned with the federal government to provide a two-month rebate of free electricity to their customers nationwide. In a statement by the Executive Director, Research and Advocacy at the Association of Nigeiarian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Barrister Sunday Oduntan, said the decision was in recognition of the challenging effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on the economic and daily lives of the customers. Oduntan, who is also the spokesman for the DisCos, said: “We are also completely aligned with the plans to ensure palliative measures, including free electricity supply to all Nigerians for two months, to make life easier, during the lockdown period. Details of implementation to come soon.”
Oduntan also said the initiative is a fulfilment of the DisCos’ commitments to the nation as they align themselves with the efforts of the National Assembly and the Federal Executive to mitigate the hardships that are currently being borne by their customers and Nigerian citizens. The DisCos commended the lawmakers, the Executive arm and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for their initiative adding that they are committed to working with them to ensure more efficient power supply within the difficult period. The power firms also reiterated their commitments to improving service delivery to the nation during this COVID-19 pandemic period and thereafter as they advised their customers to stay at home and stay safe. Daily Trust reports that the House of Representatives had on Saturday called for the supply of free electricity to Nigerians for two months as part of measures to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila made the call at a meeting between the National Assembly leadership and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmad, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze, among others.

HealthCoronavirus: Italian Mayor Flies His Student Daughters Out Of 'unsafe' England by JetStar(op): 7:11pm On Mar 24, 2020
The mayor of Bergamo, the city hardest hit by Italy’s coronavirus outbreak, has flown his daughters out of the UK because he says the British government’s response to the pandemic has been too slow.

Giorgio Gori, who has led the city since 2014, said the family had taken the decision because he viewed the UK’s response as so inadequate that his children would be safer at home, “even if we are at the centre of the epidemic”.

As of Monday night, there were 6,471 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the province of Bergamo.

Gori told Sky News: “I have two daughters, they are studying in England, one in Taunton in college and the other in Canterbury, she’s doing a master’s.

“And when I saw what the English government was thinking about this problem, I decided to bring them back, because I think that even if we are at the centre of the epidemic, probably they are more secure here than in England, because I don’t understand why the government didn’t decide in time to protect their citizens.”

Italy has been under lockdown for almost two weeks as it tries to contain the virus, which had killed 6,077 people as of Monday night. But there were some signs of progress on Monday, with the rate of new infections in Lombardy beginning to slow.

The situation in Bergamo, a province of 1.2 million people in the Lombardy region, has been particularly intense, with the sheer number of patients and deaths overwhelming hospitals and funeral services.

The army was deployed last week to transport bodies from Bergamo city to neighbouring provinces after the crematorium became overwhelmed.

The British death toll reached 335 on Monday, but critics of the government have accused Boris Johnson of acting too slowly and failing to enact measures that would slow the crisis.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said on Monday that people ignoring advice to stay at home were “very selfish”, adding that the government was willing to take more action if needed.
