Lurker4Long: Everything about this foot patrol in the DRC just seems correct: - Designated Marksman -> check;
- Grenadier -> check;
- Foot patrol TTPs -> check;
- Walk where locals walk -> check;
What I've not been able to establish is whether this foot patrol was undertaken by a section or platoon.
Kikuyu1, Odunayaw, CaptainStephen, Jl115, shadowprimezero, SuperSixSeven : would you include the 60mm patmor and RPG-7 on this patrol, and why? Patmor 100%....brilliant ambush defence especially for smaller squads!!! Being able to reply with mortar fire(within seconds) in an ambush situation is gold!! |

Sincerely, this aircraft is expensive to procure and maintain. The capabilities are also overrated. They were not in storage, 2 if you read the article they should be flying again next month |

Lurker4Long: In the interest of intellectual honesty, here's the full defenceweb article, without the selective edits:
SAAF Gripens grounded
The South African Air Force’s (SAAF’s) Gripen fleet is temporarily grounded, with no aircraft serviceable, due to a lack of funding and maintenance and support contracts not being renewed in time, but it is likely that the Gripens will be flying again in the new year.
In a statement resulting from multiple media enquiries, the Department of Defence (DoD) said the South African National Defence Force’s (SANDF’s) Air Defence capability has been negatively impacted by protracted discussions relating to maintenance contracts.
“After a lengthy discussion between the South African Air Force (SAAF), through Armscor and Saab on the contract concerning the Gripen, proposals have been presented by both parties and are being reviewed to ensure that the matter is conclusively dealt with by the parties concerned. It is unfortunate that the discussions took longer than expected as a result, negatively impacting on the Air Defence capability,” stated Siphiwe Dlamini, DoD Head of Communication.
He added that, “the SAAF is confident that a solution will be found to resolve this matter. Due to the sensitivity around the discussion, the negotiations cannot be made public.”
Darren Olivier, Director at African Defence Review, notes that, “thanks to this delay, the SAAF’s Gripen fleet has been grounded for three months and probably won’t return to the air until late January at the earliest.”
He believes it’s a crisis caused primarily by severe budget cuts, “but seemingly compounded by a dysfunctional relationship between the SAAF and Armscor and poor contract management. This is a crisis that should never have been allowed to reach this point.”
At least as far back as August this year, negotiations regarding the placement of new support contracts for the Hawk and Gripen were still ongoing due to “high fixed costs”.
defenceWeb understands that maintenance and support contracts have not been renewed in time because of Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) requirements, Armscor implementing Preferential Procurement regulations incorrectly, and funding constraints.
It is believed that half the Gripen fleet of 26 aircraft has been cannibalised for spare parts, while air crew have lost currency due to a lack of flight hours. This is compounded by a lack of PC-7 Mk II trainers available.
The funding crisis affecting the SAAF, and the SANDF as a whole, has also seen the serviceability of other aircraft decline. For example, there are only around a dozen Oryx available out of a fleet of roughly 40. Over the last year only around a third of the Hawk fleet has been operational. Much of the eight-strong C-130BZ Hercules fleet is unserviceable, although two aircraft are airworthy and flying after a major service, and two more are undergoing scheduled maintenance.
The lack of funding also means there is little ammunition available for the SAAF’s combat aircraft.
As far back as 2016, experts were warning that budget cuts coupled with the Rand’s decreasing value could mean the Gripen or Hawk fleets would be permanently grounded (the poor Rand/dollar exchange rate has made it increasingly expensive to acquire spares from overseas). For nearly a decade, the SAAF has been unable to fund the airworthiness of the entire Hawk and Gripen fleets, and half the Gripen fleet has since been in ‘rotational storage’.
According to the 2021 DoD Annual Performance Plan, for 2021/22, a total of R5.969 billion is allocated to the Air Defence programme (essentially the SAAF in its entirety), against a requirement of R7.8 billion. “The shortfall of R1 840 622 000 will adversely impact on the preparation and provision of combat-ready air defence capabilities, maintenance backlog, maintenance of capabilities and aviation safety within the Programme.”
The SAAF’s Air Combat Capability (which includes Hawk and Gripen operations) has seen its allocation shrinking in most years. According to the Annual Performance Plan, the Air Combat Capability was allocated R783 million in 2017/18 but this dropped down to R519 million the next year, and increased to R649 million in 2019/20 and R866 million in 2020/21. However, for 2021/22 it declined to R343 million and is projected to reach just R302 million in 2022/23.
“In the light of the current DOD budget reductions, the Air Defence Programme will remain under pressure to provide the required air defence capabilities to execute its mandate. Despite the budget and capability challenges, the Air Defence Programme will continue with training to provide the required air defence capabilities to support humanitarian and disaster relief operations and secure the RSA airspace as and when required in accordance with the Joint Force Employment requirements,” the Annual Performance Plan stated.
The DoD in August told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans (PCDMV) that constrained funding was affecting the ability of the SAAF to provide enough serviceable aircraft, which is negatively affecting flying hours.
Helicopter systems have a critical spares shortage which is because of procurement processes with long lead times and a backlog of spares. Transport and combat systems have similar issues, the PCDMV heard.
During the first quarter of the 2021/22 financial year, the SA Air Force flew 3 560.8 hours, including 2 717 Force Preparation hours; 636.7 Force Employment hours; and 207.1 VVIP flying hours. It has a target of 17 100 hours for the year but only 15 000 hours in 2022/23 and 2023/24. covid lock downs have also had a severe impact on the availability of spares |

Shma: Can someone please enlighten me? How did Ghana help SA during Apartheid? I don't get it.
@AfriqueDuZuid.. I Know where you're coming from. It won't reduce SA's reputation when you accept the fact that Ghana helped you - I know SA has played a big role in fighting apartheid, but even with that small participation of ghana by allowing your people to invest In their country, is something not to be overlooked.
@Vankelvin, Ghana didn't help SA. The fact that both countries are British colonies, it's important that you take note of the co-relationship. don't use it to STRING your jealous emotional antics. The only country that I know, which truly helped SA are Zambia, Tanzania, and the Soviet Union.
Black zombies in black nations should know peace. Don't demean other African countries because of the ego inflicted by whites. SA is not superior to Ghana and vice verse. and Cuba.... They sent 50 000 soldiers, they got fvcked up though but its the thought that counts |

AfriqueDuZuid: I predict they will challenge DA for 2nd spot.
If you have been watching recent events, 2024 we may have a coalition formed government. ANC will certainly need a coalition in 2024... My biggest fear is that it will form one with the EFF just to stay in power. Also I think it's a bit to much to expect a new party like ActionSA to challenge the DA in 2024....also if the DA runs its newly acquired metros as it should then they may very well regain lost votes to the likes of the FF and possibly ActionSA.... However funnily enough even though ActionSA and EFF are on opposite ends of the economic spectrum I do see ActionSA taking a big bunch of EFF and ANC voters especially from the poorer voters. My predictions for 2024: ANC: 46% DA: 24% EFF: 10% ActionSA : 10% (although I hope they do better and personally I'm really considering voting for them) IFP:3% FF: 2% Rest: 5% |

Shma: Nairobi has been ranked the best city in Africa.
Expatriates have ranked Kenya’s capital Nairobi the best city to work in on the continent, jumping 50 places from last year, due to ease of settling and finding houses.
The Expat City Ranking 2021 shows Nairobi also ranks 12 out of 57 cities surveyed in the world , an improvement from 62 out of 66 in 2020.
Nairobi beat other African cities — Cape Town (41), Cairo (52), and Johannesburg (55).
The survey carried out by a global network of expatriates, InterNations, shows the expatriates picked the city due to ease in getting settled at fourth position globally, after Malaga, Mexico City and Kuala Lumpur based on friendliness of locals, feeling welcomed and local language.
The city was also ranked sixth globally in the finance and housing index based on overall satisfaction with their financial situation, disposable income and affordability and ease of finding houses.
“All three African cities featured rank among the bottom 10 in the quality of urban living and urban work life indices — except for Nairobi, which lands in 34th place in the latter index. Nairobi also outperforms the other cities when it comes to the ease of getting settled, as well as finances and housing,” the survey stated.
The ranking surveyed 12,420 respondents in 57 cities.
InterNations, the largest community of expatriates, has more than four million members in 420 cities.
The latest survey analysed five areas of expatriate life — quality of urban towns, getting settled, work-life balance, finance, housing and cost of living, to reveal the likely city of choice for expats to move to in 2022.
you do know there are other expat websites that rank Joburg and CT higher than Nairobi right? |

kikuyu1: A case in point is Africa's only indig built gunship, the Rooivalk.
There've been plenty of potential buyers since its development.
[url][https://www.news24.com/fin24/rooivalk-among-worlds-best-20060704url]
Even the Brits shortlisted it for their army aviation but like EVERYONE else pulled out at the last minute after the U.S. refused to share codes that would have it fire the Hellfire anti tank missile.
A terrible pity as my RESEARCH shows it's a terrific platform capable of things other gunships just CAN'T do. You'll not see a Hind upside down in a loop like this. It has a much lower down time than other maintenance hungry turbine choppers and thus has a higher flight availability than the competition. However, this market segment is dominated by the global heavy hitters. Competing with them is like jumping into the ring as a middle weight to face Tyson Fury- A NO WIN SITUATION. If Waffas were wiser strategically they'd have developed a Rooivalk 2.0, less hi tech and thus cheaper. As it is here in Africa it's more like a Land Cruiser ZX in an economy of Caldinas and Proboxes. This thing is IDEAL for Africa! Its engines can handle our typically hot and high conditions unlike Russian and Euro choppers which are known to struggle in Afghanistan. Look!
https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/world/asia/us-is-struggling-in-its-effort-to-build-an-afghan-air-force.html
If they'd offered local production facilities say in Naij who badly need gunship or even Kenya imo also for other African buyers they'd have sold at LEAST a 100 within a decade! They've stubbornly refused to rethink their strategy and til date have ONLY delivered the first of 12 2 decades ago to the AF which could well do with another 12 easily. This is why Paramount Group are promising to build a factory for any srs African buyer for their Mwari COIN aircraft. Saffas, you urgently need a RETHINK and a refocus of your energy. I'm just saying. Great summary |
