I believe he spent only 1 minute on the pitch on that faithful day grin

Modified
I believe he played mostly as a CF in his U17 days. But he's not had much game time so far this year.

edi287:
Didn't know he could also play as CF. Wouldn't mind if he made the 35 man squad.

On a second thought, Muazam's stats are not bad. Muazam vs Aluko grin

Position-wise, we have about 5 players fighting for 3 AM slots in my list.

edi287:
I'd leave one of umar and Awoniyi for Aluko.

Al Hassan, why is that? No one is saying this is what Rohr will do.. it's a discussion. Who is Muazam better than in my list of AMs?

Nedum Onuoha on teammate, Ebere Eze:

"Ebere has an awful lot of potential; he's a very exciting player.

"We see him every day Monday through Friday and he's finally getting an opportunity.

"I think that further down the line you could really see an exceptional talent for the club.

"It was a good goal; I'm not sure if the one-two with Matt Smith was intentional but the composure he showed going through didn't surprise me one bit. Technically, he's one of the best players I've seen at the club."

My updated 35 man list

I had to squeeze Samuel Kalu and Ebere Eze in somehow. We cannot afford to lose a fast rising talent to Scotland. The numbers to the right will be the final pics for each position to make the 23-man list. I think the competition will be fierce for all the positions. It will definitely bring out the best in them.

I remember Atlanta 96 while still very young, Kanu was one of the players we criticized leading to that semi-final game against Brazil. But after that famous semi final win, Kanu have been celebrated till this very day as one of the major reasons why we won gold. How about we count Umar's performance against Germany as one of his bad days. Looking at the full picture, 4 goals in 6 games in a tournament is pretty impressive for any forward. He had a decent tournament. We cannot criticize him for just one bad show.

Modified
You talk about Awoniyi like you have forgotten his U17 and U20 days too soon. Fine, he experienced a dip at some point.. But he's been impressive since moving to the Jupiler league.. Please let's focus on the present. Awoniyi is back. Umar is performing shekina.. I would invite both to camp.

Mickael2:
first of all, if not for Umar we would have defeated Germany in the semifinal as simple as that and the number of chances he missed in the losers final was just baffling. if you are the striker in your team and your team scores five goals in a match without you having a hand in any then you are poor. he had a poor tournament as simple as that.

Umar is faster than Awoniyi. Awoniyi is not fast at all, it was exposed during the U20 when he had to play from the wings and during the Olympics qualifiers when he and Ajayi had to alternate between playing as a winger and a striker and his lack of pace was exposed.

Good move for his development.

ChrisKels:
Gent Searching For Replacement In Nigeria For Ligue 1 Bound Samuel Kalu

Top division Belgium side Gent are currently resigned to losing their talented Nigerian forward Samuel Kalu, who is close to joining a team in the French Ligue 1.

Last night Kalu scored the only goal for Gent in their 1-0 win over Club Brugge in the Belgium play-offs, and shortly after the game, a club source revealed to Owngoalnigeria.com that the 20 year old will leave the club in January.

Since joining Gent two seasons ago from Slovakian side AS Trencin, Kalu has improved tremendously with 10 goals and 16 assists in the 47 matches he has played since his move to the club.

” He is off in the summer to a French Ligue 1 team. The deal is as good as done from what I’m hearing. As a matter of fact Gent are already in the market for a new wing forward and they prefer a Nigerian”, Owngoalnigeria.com transfer expert Daniel Martins revealed.

” The transfer fee could be in the region of 8-10 million Euros with a particular percentage due to his former side AS Trencin. Gent will also demand a sell on clause in his deal when he moves to the Ligue 1 “.

ok then, so what advantage has Umar over Ajayi?

Modified.
Let me help you with the previous question. Ajayi has been used mostly on the left wing.. Good goal return.
But I won't invite him over Umar unless I want a versatile forward.

1. On the GK position, let's not flog a dead horse. We just don't have the options.
2. Like I already asked, why Ajayi over Umar?
3. Why are we still flirting with Agbo, or don't we have more competition at DM? I want to believe Esiti has had a better campaign this season in the same Jupiler league. Or maybe we should give Ogude from the Russian Premier league a look in. Or should we give the older Nwakali another chance?

Other than the above, my updated list would look almost identical to yours.

actually -- green.
grin
How was Iwobi's performance today, and what are the same fans saying?

goldfish80:
One of the most hilarious things I read on this thread was that Arsenal fans single out Iwobi for criticism because he dumped England for Nigeria, when 90% of Arsenal fans aren't English.
We are talking about a global brand that is Arsenal whose fan base cuts across different races, tribes and religion.
This thread can be quite yellow at times.

Alex Iwobi

Good performance from the Nigerian, one of his best for months. Played a big part in the first goal and set up the second and third. Unlucky not to score himself with a shot that was saved. 8

On your last paragraph, defending tribe or country with arguments can never rebuild any image. Defending with appropriate action can. Abi who Ghana vs Nigeria argument don epp?

As regards the age thing, there is no rule. It would vary from country to country. You know a performing player regardless of his age. There should be no sentiments. A promising player will not give you his 2022 performance in 2018 (that's if he even ever reaches his potential). Conversely, of what use is a player's older age if he cannot translate it to the required WC performance?

Farzat:
This issue of our players age debate should be checkmated. Whenever d age of our player is mentioned there's always a debate of d player being Older than his age. Criticising the form of a player is part of d game but we should stop embarrassing them to the outside world because many foreigners and journalists visits this thread. Pls lets take the right attitude to protect our image that has been so wonderful.

For me, the right age for WC should be 24 and above, except for a special talent like Mbape. Any average player below 24 should be playing in U23 competitions, Team B, Olympics and stuffs like that. Check out d age bracket of d Brazilian team that beat Germany in their last friendly match, check out the age bracket of the Serbian team that just beat us, their age bracket is between 25-32 and that should be d right age for WC.

There wont be any trophy for parading d youngest team In Russia, experience and Youthfulness should be mixed to give us the right balance. Look at how ordinary our team looks whenever Mikel is not playing, this same Mikel would find it difficult to make the first team of other teams going to d WC.

Also this so much emphasis on league than players performance is nonsense. I just watched Torino vs Inter and I can tell that some Belgian teams can comfortably beat any of those Italian teams. We are one country that lacks what we have in abundance. We have good players in lower ranked leagues across Europe but we will ignore them and start pursuing small small boys that are still learning d rudiments of d game just because they are born abroad.

As for u guys that are bent to display tribal sentiments on this thread, just the same way the Nigerian presidency from one region has not make that region better than other regions. Likewise, having the majority of our team from one region can not make that region better than others. If we can defend Nigeria the way we defend tribe, i can tell that we can rebuild d image of this country by ourselves.

While the argument can be made that Umar has improved, Ajagun has been quite consistent and I would support his inclusion in the 35 man list as well. The question should be who are his competition, and can he give them a good fight? It will definitely raise the standard in camp irrespective of whether he makes the final cut or not.
Umar will bring good competition as well.
Onyekuru will. Dessers might.

Modified
And we need to focus on recent form in our discussion, unless of course a player can borrow his form of 5 years ago.

Kog45:
There is one thing that keep on baffling me here, double standard, just checked Umar Sadiq professional record so far, really surprised that some believe he has something to offer than Ideye and funny enough better than Ighalo?fallacies

Cyril Dessers started his professional career in Belgium with a lowly club where he had good youth football before moving to Lokeren with 25 appearance with no goal for two season and moved to Nec breda in dutch division two with awesome performance and snapped up by Utrecht, but so far couldn't tie a regular shirt though 7 goals in 17 appearance but some believe he is the answer,no issue he can be a good option.

But telling me Ajagun at 25 has passed his prime but Dessers at 25 still has a lot to offer, why double standard in passing comments on our bona fide players who are doing well.
