Correct post. I have often said Nairaland is deliberately set up like the Jerry Springer show ....... and we all know the type of characters the real show sought to attract while it ran. The sad thing is that these uncouth elements here are mainly frustrated losers because if successful and achieving you would naturally be inclined to admire, respect and even be inspired by top-level achievers.

How many ordinary achievement , like owning a home, do these uncouth elements have to their name let alone be insulting those who have achieved the things Soyinka and Achebe have? Many who should be working on improving themselves are here throwing insults at great and distinguished individuals. Of course those men are not perfect and can be criticised but the invectives used against them here just leave a bad taste in the mouth. It has gone beyond "freedom of speech" and the owner of the forum should be up and doing instead of hiding behind some convenient notion of letting folks 'freely' discuss what they want.
You've said it all. I find it appalling and am unnerved by people who hold NOTHING sacred. Not elders, not death, nothing. I pity them

Katsumoto: Do people organize coups to install individuals who are not sympathetic to their cause or share their pains? There is a reward or punishment for executing a coup.
Thats one point you have raised in isolation amidst a myriad of questions.

If the aim of the second coup was as claimed to "save the country from the 'igbo coup' then why did it become a northern affair. One question i will ask was whose coup was it and who gave the plotters the right to unceremoniously brush off the next most senior officer in the nigerian army after ironsi was assassinated? I read somewhere that during the second coup Ogundipe was rebuffed by a northern nco who told him that he could only take orders from Joe Garba who was a small boy compared to him in rank. Adebayo nko was he not senior to gowon? Even Wu Bassey could have been made head of state. It was a northern elitist/military affair that most likely disgusted southern officers and lets not look at it with our 2013 hardened and de-sensitized eyes o. We are talking about 1966 when there was still a lot of integrity and naivety in nigeria. Gowon to all intents and purposes was the beneficiary of s cabal arrangement that put him in office as head of state above many of his seniors.

Two heroes though not forgotten but I can't resist mentioning them.

1. Count Carl Gustav Von Rosen - crack pilot, humanitarian titan and adventurer.

2. Major Taffy Williams - welsh mercenary who fought for love and not money

aurenflani: Mamman Shuwa prevented Igbo massacres by ordering the armoury to be locked. Buhari protected some igbo officers from being murdered. Chukwuma murdered Sardauna-huge igbo mistake. Igbo murdered Tafawa Balewa-huge mistake.
You are right about Shuwa. He did a lot for igbos I must admit. He was transferred from his post to one obscure place like this by the angry northern military elite

This was a rich old fool who won the presidence clean and fair but the Fulanis ordered that he will never smell Aso rock because he was a low level inferior muslim. (The yoruba muslim are the slaves in the kindom of mohammed)
Lol! In abuja few weeks ago there was a fist fight at area 10 mosque between yoruba and hausa muslims because yoruba muslim took microphone to lead prayers. That day laugh nearly burst my belle. My office is close to the place and we were scared it would escalate.

Of course lagos and ibadan press no carry the story only "The Sun" gave it small notice. Smh

7842I: " Yorubas are the trouble with Nigeria" Lamido Sanusi.
Just see how they bring their amala tactics to soil a cerebral discussion. Honestly only few of them on this site really have anything sensible to say. Smh

Gowon, a wartime head of state and commander in chief for almost ten years cannot write a simple shred of article or memoirs to give account of his years of stewardship in those difficult days and our yoruba bros dem only contribution is stuff they glean from their bigotry template like ojukwu fled to ivory coast, he married bianca etc

Gowon pops up every now and then to make hollow statements about achebe or ojukwu. As if the biggest issues facing this country are ojukwu. Smh

You don't need an invitation card but you need a little maturity and knowledge otherwise we could just get some goats and chimpanzees, give them some laptops and they would sound like you.

If you were discussing in a room full of people above the age of 17 you would have been laughed out the place but of course na anonymous moniker you dey use so u can talk absolute bunkum.

debetmx: Ojukwu didn't gaffe on war and economic matters in biafra? Was ojukwu d most senior officer in biafra?
Ojukwu is a saint, Gowon is d devil? Same old propaganda.dem Igbo boys grow up
How old are you sef? Ojukwu wrote more than one memoir and he wasn't even head of state. This thread isn't about ojukwu. You Yoruba boys love to spew nonsense like street thugs when u can easily talk sense.

If you look up a book or two instead of trying to earn some online gang love for tribalism you would easily know that Brigadier Ogundipe was the most senior officer and should have been head of state. The northern elite of course installed a northern christian puppet.

I honestly believe gowon will never write his memoirs. His role in history is just too dark and I'm sure he tries to forget it.

He was installed as head of state over many of his seniors based on the wishes of the northern elite, due process was murdered and hasn't been properly revived, even after the war some of his gaffes on political and ecocomic matters are the stuff of legend and jokes

WHY DO BAIFRAN WANT THE WEST ESPECIALLY LAGOS ?

Why Lagos, why is it so important to baifra ? It was a capital of the country but also predominately ethnically owned so why would you choose that as a point of attack because I am really confused on this one.

Thanks
Fair question. Lagos was marked for an attack because it was the seat of power of the Nigerian state. I disagree completely that the biafran army had designs on the western region. When people have imperialistic designs on territory, the said designs are characterised by brutality and symbolic acts of colonisation. I am sure nobody can claim that the biafran troops carried out any atrocities in yorubaland or ore where they were stopped.

As for your point that Lagos was predominantly owned by one ethnic group, I don't think it applies because the owners (yorubas) really had no mouth or say regarding Lagos or the entire western region. The people in control of Lagos were the Hausa-Fulani Regime and they were the ones who would naturally be the focus of the attack.

modicum: Many people have urged Gen. Gowon to write his memoir.Mounting such pressure on him is an exercise in futility because there are five key issues, which he will never be able to explain convincingly to all Nigerians. So he prefers to avoid talking about them. The first is the Aburi Accord. How on earth can Gowon justify dumping an agreement he signed freely in a foreign country, surrounded by a crowd of advisers and technocrats?

The second is the pogrom of 1966/1967 in Kano and Kaduna? Till date, nobody was arrested. Nobody was prosecuted or convicted for murder, arson and looting. Lest we forget, it is this impunity over the years that has metamorphosed into an controllable monster called Boko Haram. Boko Haram is not imported. It is a phenomenon nurtured by the Northern elite to consolidate their hold on power at the centre. It may have developed some international “tentacles” but it was wholly home-grown. The Northern elite have lost control of what they created.

Third, how can Gowon justify the signing away of the Bakassi Peninsular without consulting the indigenes, all in a desperate move to win his war against Emeka Ojukwu? Gen. Gowon traded away a people, their land, the resources and the strategic position of the Bakassi Peninsular. Fourthly, what is Gowon’s explanation for the starving to death of two million children in Biafra? Was there no other way to avoid this monumental human tragedy?

Finally, how will Gowon justify signing the Abandoned Property decree? How will Gowon reconcile that decree with “No victor, No vanquished”? How will he reconcile the Abandoned Property law with his “RRR” (Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction)? The “RRR” was cleverly hijacked by the Lagos/Ibadan propaganda machine because Western Nigeria benefited immensely from Gowon’s dictatorship. “RRR” existed only on the pages of Tribune, Sketch and Herald newspapers. There was nothing on ground for the devastated Easterners. It was Sam Mbakwe and Jim Nwobodo that started reconstructing roads in 1979 (nine years after “RRR” was declared by the Federal Government). It is now (40 years after the war) that Rotimi Amaechi and Godswill Akpabio are reconstructing and expanding pre-war roads in their states. Nigerians waiting for Gowon’s memoir may have to wait forever.
OP you have asked some very salient questions. i always wondered why the head of state during a time of war will not even have memoirs of his time in command, not even an authorised biography. ive always thought it funny but never gave it much attention
