Most of the time, I personally use a simple text editor especially when my web pages have scripts to run. Frontpage normally adds unneccesarry codes to your pages and this over time will make your pages load slower. I dont know if dreamweaver does this. My favorite text editor is scite. Its a programmers's note pad and uses colorto highlight coding and its relatively easy to discover errors in your codes. |
E bay has a way of resolving issues. If the laptop does not work and was represented to you as being in working condition, then contact the seller and threathen to leave a negative feedback for him. If this does not work, then report to Ebay and paypal and you can get your money refunded if u paid thru pay pal. If you completed the transaction outside ebay then of course u are on ur own. Did you check his feedback b4 trading with him? On ebay, its better and safe to do your homework b4 u buy. I have bought more than 4 laptops on ebay and never had any problem whatsoever. |
First off, you cant want 15" screen and be talking of portability. The larger the screen, the more heavy the laptop is. Secondly, you cant get much of a battery life on a P4. You would be better off getting either a celeron or a P4-Mobile. Having said that, personally, I'd go for IBM. It's rock solid and they normally have 3 years warranty. I have used Toshiba, and Dell amongst others and I cannot honestly based on my experiences with a new Toshiba laptop. Am using my second IBM now and though I cant afford the price, I normally get it off ebay and it has never failed me.Am actually in the process of getting one of the X-series which are ultra portables less than 1.5KG and as flat as can be. All the best. |
For what its worth, the mac OS is a pioneer OS and most OSes always tend to play catch up. The Vista is playing catch up to loadsa featrues already in the Mac OS. The mac OS is built on the Unix platform and hence is secure and a safe platform compared to the M$ windoze. Designwise, the macs are just unbeatable. Personally, there is no xmas gift I would like more than a powerbook or Ibook. Dual booting the mac OS with Suse Linux will surely be heaven. Now, this is just a wish, I can surely imagine better things to spend money on than more than £1000 on a laptop. The problem macs have in my view is that for the same amount of money, you can get a much better equiped computer or laptop. Software wise, there are loads of open source software which will run equally well on a Mac or Linux or windows. Now, can you get macs to proliferate in NIgeria? No. Reason being, Nigerians are averse to change, and they are just too expensive. Jobs made a mistake removing the Mac OS port from the PC platform and I think thats what he is trying to correct by allowing the Mac OS to be available on the PC platform. Thats my 2 cents worth. |
My new Suse 10.0 desktop without any enhancing.

I am writing this from my spanking new Opensuse installation and for the first time, I am seriously thinking of ditching Kanotix. Suse 10 has a very professional installation much better than I have ever experienced in any Linux distro or even in Windows. It just works. And for it to be so fast on a hard disk of about 3GB, says something. Only thing I didnt like is the installation taking over an hour and using 5 CDs. Kanotix finishes installation in less than 30 minutes. But then, you cant have your cake and eat it I guess. |
All web developers out there, can anyone give me an idea of average cost of developing web sites in Nigeria. I have a project I would like to do and would like to have an idea of how much it would cost. |
Use Openoffice.org. It converts any document into .pdf format. |
ALll you need to do to test the IBM is to connect it to any external monitor and power it up.If it works, then there is a problem with the LCD screen. In my opinion, if thats the case, might be better off selling it off and buying another one. The best way to know what kind of RAM your laptop uses is to go to www.crucial.com. It will tell you what the maximum RAM for ur laptop is and give you the specs of what you need so you can be sure you dont make a mistake. Am sure u know that computer's system boards have a maximum RAM they can take. |
@IAH, if a buyer is the one notifying u of a paypal payment there is something fishy. Paypal is the one that should notify you of a payment into ur account. |
Who checks Drivers license in NIgeria? I have spent a period of up to 4 or 5 years driving in Lagos everyday without any driver's license. All you need is to settle the police and the dont even ask for your papers. If you do decide to collect it, all u need is a tout to get it for u. You dont need to do any test. |
From what I understand about paypal, payments are made thru paypal into ur bank account or ur credit card using ur email. Now, how can the guy make a fake paypal payment? He doenst know your bank or card details. Sides, am sure u can log into ur paypal account to know if the guy has paid.? @ IAH, still waiting for the scenario cos this is really interesting. Its quite easy not to release my goods until payments are made. Thats why I wouldnt post outside Europe or the US. |
@Kazey, that is a rule of thumb, didnt you read the part about if u have less feedback contact me for permission to bid? I dont think paypal can be faked. In any case, when I say postal orders, I mean British postal orders oh.....that is as good as cash. Me I dont have wahala in my life. If you are bidding from outside the UK, pay using paypal. If not, commot for road let serious people talk. |
@ IAH, just adopt my policy. If you dont have feedback of upto 20, then you need to contact me before you bid. If you bid without my permission I will cancel your bid and report you to ebay. Shipping to Nigeria is out of it cos of 419. For crying out loud am a Nigerian and if any idiot thinks I will be mugun(stupid) enough to fall for an online scam, he has another think coming. Most bids on ebay nowadays dont take anything less than paypal or postal orders. Better safe than sorry. Western union, your grandfather's sister's uncle, abeg forget any such story |
Am just seeing this. Pity cos I coulda downloaded it and burnt it on a cd and sent it to you as I have someone leaving for Naija tonite. If I see anybody coming again soon, I'll get in touch that is if you have not gotten it by then. |
joftech:Emmm, please, please tell me you are all just joking...... no TFT ke?? |
joftech:Try Amarok, Kaffeine, jukbox . If you go into Synaptic and search for only media players, you will see a whole lot that you could try. I personally use Amarok. It has a cover manager which downloads the cover image for all your mp3 files. |
Linux is a variant of Unix which by design is secure so the user does not need to do much to secure it. I have several times installed linux and used it without any form of firewall or any security. The nature of Linux is security conscious ab initio. Very unlike windows where you need to install firewalls and anti viruese immediately you install the OS. |
as far as am concerned, Ubuntu is just a lot of hype. You cant even use the normal debian repositories. For instance, on my kanotix box, I can use the package repositories of Mepis and vice versa. But Ubuntu have customised their packages so much that they are complete departures from Debian. |
It would be a lot better if people would take time out do a little bit of research( and am not talking about reading the MS sponsored security reports which claim Windoze is more secure than Linux), I mean really do some serious research, and maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea to actually use whatever it is you are criticing? More than 90% of computer users use Windows, so it makes basic sense as a virus writer to target the majority. If you cared to use a linux box, you would know that most distros nowadays do not even allow you to log in as root or SU. If you want to do things as SU, you go into console to do it. For someone to say that only geeks can use Linux is obviously one of the worst mis-statements of this century. I have had people who know next to nothing about computers use linux boxes without any problems. Most modern distros, Kanotix, Mepis, FC4, Suse, etc, do not need any fiddling. All you do is install and all you are good to go. I dont campaign for the whole world to use Linux but personally, I aint contributing money to M$ any more. Now as to the issue of a Nigerian distro. I have refrained from posting on this thread cos I would probably step on some toes. The truth is that, there are so many Live CDs available today, that you can master( customize) to your taste. And as the previous poster pointed out, add your own images, desktop, icons, splash screen etc and you have a distro. Knoppix does it, Kanotix also does it. But in my own opinion, what exactly the point in re-inventing the wheel? Will this bring IT closer to the roots? Will it in any way improve the condition on the poor man on the street, me thinks not. I personally believe this kinda effort can be channelled to something more productive and of more benefit to the greater community. |
One more reason to use KDE, Klaptop works very well on my laptop. I have configured the laptop to suspend when I close the Lid so when am not using it, I just close it, and I have not shut down the laptop for up to a week now. At a time, it was on suspend for about two days. Once I open the lid, it just starts working again. It doesnt work in ICE WM or flux box which I also have on the laptop. |
vexxy:@ vexxy, seems nobody has answered you. Gaim is a multi-protocol messaging open source program. It works on Linux( thats what I use), and also on windows. It allows you to integrate all your IM clients in one program so you dont need to have MSN, Yahoo messenger, Aim, Jabber, Trillian etc. And it also uses the features such as emoticons of the native client. Check it out here: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ |
I dont pretty much fancy Ubuntu cos they have deviated so much from Debian. You cant really use Debian repositories if you are using Ubuntu. I always get the CDs( they normally send 10 out) but I have never once installed it. If you want the KDE variant, try Kunbuntu. You can check for its details on www.distrowatch.com KDE rocks. Well so its a resource hog, but I can change anything from splash screens to log in screens to desktop to my icons. Name it and I can change it and so many to choose from, just visit www.kde-look.org I have tried a couple of distros this past few days. Alinux, blag, vector linux, symphony,DSL and the list goes on. Good thing my broadband has unlimited downoads or I woulda been paying thru my teeth. I even tried to do an FTP install of Suse 9.3 but I couldnt get it to work. Am really interested in using Suse but I cant imagine downloading 5 different CDs for just one distro. Wonder how long instalation would be. Probably longer than MS? Anyhow seems I will be going back to Simply Mepis and I have yet to make up my mind on the distro going on my second box. |
yes I am. I also use FXCE & ICE wm. For anybody who is interested in learning Linux, visit a site built by a newbie. http://www.whiterosecreations.nl/linux/ |
I just finished installing Mepis Lite on my laptop. I tell you aint nothing like Linux. From my clicking the install button to having a fully functional system took less than 20 minutes. Try that with windoze. Anyhow, here is my stock screen shot without any modification whatsoever

Niggy:I don't agree with you on this. Live Cds are useful depending on your particular situation. I for one am not a geeky person and don't like meddling around with the command line. All I want is a system up and running in less than 30 minutes. Simply Mepis, ProMepis, Knoppix, Kanotix all do this. And they give me an extra advantage in allowing me to test my hardware works. Let me give you an example. Remember when you had to check out if Fedora had ndiswrapper for me? Imagine I had dled 4 or is it 5 CDs and only to find out that I can't use my wireless card. Fine I could use an ethernet card, but the location of my router is such that I don't find it convenient using hard wired connections. As far as am concerned, if the distro cannot have ndiswrapper embedded, am not going to bother using it. For a user, the best way forward is a live Cd which you can in anycase hard disk install and probably dual boot with windoze BTW, Niggy have any experience with Suse? I have downloaded the boot.iso and am going to use it to do an FTP install. I did a test run just now and it seems simple enough. Will probably do it at night when there will be little traffic around my router and I can leave my laptop without any body stepping on it. |

Dunno about KDE 4.0 KDE 3.5 alpha was just released to FTP servers. Screenshots here: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=407&slide=3 DL Klax Live CD with KDE 3.5 here:http://ktown.kde.org/~binner/klax/devel.html |
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6448213/did/8704213/ nuff said. Reeks of 419 to me. If I were you, I'd take off and run and hide. The address of the travel agent seems funny to me. They have probably been contacting you using GSM PAYG phones which are not traceable. If you believe she really loves you, then you have to believe that am the Queen of Sweeden. |
