Technology MarketRe: Cheap Computers in Nigeria by jogego(m): 5:09pm On Jul 23, 2005
Like I said, I dont know nothing about the market in Nigeria but for the market in the UK, for a brand new laptop, expect to spend between £399 to over a thousand pounds.

Most of those being sold in Ikeja are second hand anyhow, I wouldnt spend more than £200 on a second user laptop.

A lot of online retailers in the UK sell them. And a lot of adverts are placed in Computer magazines.

NYSCRe: The Compulsory One Year NYSC Program by jogego(m): 12:59pm On Jul 23, 2005
In my belief, nothing in life is ever a waste. We go thru life each and every day learning. If you want something to be a complete waste of your time, then it would be. Nobody can have served in a place as remote as me. I spent a year in Borno State. In fact the town where I served was about 2 hours from Lake Chad. Look at the map of Nigeria to see how remote that is from a Lagos born and bred guy.

Did i seat and mope? Nope. First off, maybe cos we were so far from home, camp was a blast. The girls were unbelievable. And man, we were nacking in all available nooks and crannies while in Maiduguri. In fact some babes from my school who had been posing all the while in school, na for camp their posing end.

After camp in Maiduguri, I was posted to Monguno. It was terrible, no electricity except bw 6 and 9 each evening. No water. But then I decided to just make the best out of it. FIne I taught and they were dullards, basically unready to study. For crying out, some SS3 girls could not spell their own names. But you see how it is in the North and compared to the South, I saw why the Ogonis are fighting.

Not to go politial, but the libraries, laboratories, workshops were all fully equiped. Imagine machinery that run on electricity in a town that does not have electriity?

But wetin concern me, the school was a girls only school and as a Lagos boy concerned, me I dabarud them. In fact I remember one of the girls who wanted to fashii her fiancee cos of me. shocked shocked I had to tell her the hard truth, we are in a village yes I can be with you, but me I get girlfriend back home who writes me a letter every week and I defintely am not going to leave her for you. Go back to your village bobo.

I dont see it as a waste of a year. In any case, if there were no NYSC as a buffer, where are the jobs sef?
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by jogego(m): 12:28pm On Jul 23, 2005
Finished downloading Kanotix 2005-03 yesterday. Yet to burn the .iso image, to be honest, am not really keen on messing up the one I have. But most times when I start feeling like this, something might happen, so I'll just do a backup just in case. If anything shd happen, then I'll install 2005-03 instead o' 2005-02.

So far the only problem I have is that if I boot with my wireless card in the machine, it fails to connect. If I boot without the wireless card, and then insert it after booting, it connects. Tiny problem if u ask me. Other than that, sweet little box. ANybody wanting to try linux on a laptop, go with an IBM thinkpad. The linux support is exceptional.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Investment for Nigerian Youths? by jogego(m): 12:11pm On Jul 23, 2005
Seun:
- A savings account, because the financial sector is policed by the government - even if the bank goes under you will not lose all your money (Federal Deposit Insurance Scheme). Of course, the value of the money will go down with time due to the effect of inflation.
I think you mean the NDIC? National(Nigerian) Deposit Insurance Corporation? If you go thru the NDIC decree, you would see that the maximum compensation anybody can get for trapped funds in a Bank is N50,000. So, in essence, where is the security?

Furthermore, investment decisions are made based on estimated returns and not on sentiments. To be frank, you would be better off investing in the Federal Goverment Treasury Bills, cos they are about the closest thing you can get to cash.

If any investment will give a return lesser than the treasury bills, then it is not worthwile. I dont want to get too technical. Any body needing any further clarification as per investments, rates of return, portfolio theory, PM me.

Incidentally, how much is the N79,900 in £?? Am familiar with the laptop market and you'd get that kind of specifications for less than £200.

PhonesRe: The "Killer GSM Phone Number" Rumor (July 2004, Nigeria) by jogego(m): 9:34pm On Jul 22, 2005
I remember secondary school in Lagos and at times there would be rumors that if somebody touches you, your private part would go missing shocked . Nobody saw someone with vanished organs, but of course as Nigerians, if you touch someone on the bus or on the road and the person shouts, them go don beat you die b4 anybody will say, wait let us see the dissappeared organ.

Pity really.Defies all logic. But then so do all things in Naija
PoliticsRe: Lagos State Water Corporation Website by jogego(m): 9:25pm On Jul 22, 2005
If I remember correctly, LSWC came to cut our water at one time claiming non payment of bills, this was at a time that we had been using the bore hole in the house for more than a year. We gladly showed them the pipe so they could cut it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. And I know the bore hole is still providing water and not LSWC. In any case, when they cut the pipe, all you need to do, is get a hose and some clamps and the water is running again.
ComputersRe: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by jogego(m): 9:09pm On Jul 22, 2005
I dont know if what you guys are talking about is broadband as in xdsl. This in the UK is provided at the telphone exchange level and once the exchange is enabled, if you are within a certain distance from the exchange, you can get broadband which means you can use your internet and the phone at the same time.

Is this the same kind of service being touted? Cos this obviously cannot be done without NITEL and the minimum speed for ADSL is 512

Any one need any clarity visit www.adslguide.org

The printer has been configured. I can print locally from the Promepis. Its a USB Samsung ML-1520. In fact, when I want to print from my Kanotix box, I just plug the USB cord in and it prints. But I dont want to be doing this all the time.

The day telephone companies in NIgeria start giving free calls, cow go fall from heaven. I have over 13 hours per month free on my phone to call any other allowed mobile phone network and all landlines. And I have unlimited text. The free calls are from 6pm till 7am weekdays and all days weekends and public holidays.

MTN,Vmobile, Glo all still have a long way to go. Right now, they re still exploiting Nigerians.
