ComputersRe: Installing Windows On Acer Travelmate 2413 With Linux Os by jogego(m): 10:52am On Mar 30, 2006
Just out of curiosity, what flavour of Linux is it? In any case, I'd advise you get the Restoraton CD that came with the Laptop originally, if not, if you do a vanilla XP installation, you will end up searching for drivers up and down.
LiteratureRe: Robert Ludlum Or John Grisham? by jogego(m): 7:00pm On Mar 29, 2006
The Parsifal Mosaic, The Matarese Circle, The Gemini Contenders and the list of his great books go on. For me, Ludlum is one of the greatest writers of suspense.

Grisham comes way down on my list and in my own honest opinion is not even as good as Forsyth, or Lustbader not to talk of the master himself.

But then that is just my own opinion.

@ Chxta, nice write up and I feel for you man, but it seems this just might be our year and might be am sticking my neck out, but the last two English teams to win the Champions League did so after beating Juve.

Anyhow, keeping our heads on the level, its just half time, and still 90 minutes for things to go wrong. Personally, I dont want Sol Campbell in that team for the second leg. The defense was so good and aint no reason to change it. Toure was a rock in the defence, he had at least two last gap clearances.

Am not celebrating too much till after the 90 minutes is up. Fabio Capello has a track record second to no one in coaching and if anyone can engineer a Juve fightback, it is him.

I remember his Real Madrid going down to Athletico Madrid by three goals at half time in the madrid derby and going on to win by 2 goals. We need to respect him and not get too over-cocky.

Remember they were in this same situation last round with Werder Bremen.
ComputersRe: I Think Nigerians Need Macintosh Computers! by jogego(m): 10:16pm On Mar 28, 2006
I have only installed linux on a desktop once.

I only use laptops. I have never had any problem other than with getting my wireless cards working.

I refuse to believe that windows XP SP2 will install drivers for a printer, network card, wireless card, etc without asking you for the driver disk.

Mepis detects all my hardware out of the box. Ubuntu does too, though I use ndiswrapper to get my wireless working. Linux works very well with IBM thinkpads which is what I use, maybe am lucky? But am talking of my own experience.

I still installed Mepis on a Dell Latitude this past weekend, and Ubuntu on an IBM thinkpad 600E last thursday.

Suse 10.1, Ubuntu Dapper drake will also pop up a dialogue when u connect a new hardware and actually configure it for you.

Might be am lucky, but what can I say?

ComputersRe: Project: PII MP3 Juke Box (Using Linux) by jogego(m): 8:16pm On Mar 28, 2006
If you dont want all the bloatware, you could try installing Ubuntu in server form. In any case, I dont think a full mepis install will use up to a gig? Never checked it b4.

Am not saying you should use samba. I am not personally akin to using terminal so I would install a gui for myself. Mepis has Mepis Lite specifically designed for old hardware such as yours.

I have a branded pentium 2 system that works faster than some P3s. All i did was to add about 512MB of Ram,It uses XP,and runs huge programs effectively.
If your system board can recognise more RAM then fine, but most motherboards have a maximum that will be recognised. My IBM 600E claims a maximum of 288 RAM but I have used more than that and it was recognised.
ComputersRe: My Computer Is Slow And Always Crashing by jogego(m): 7:42pm On Mar 28, 2006
In case you didnt know, Norton Disk and most other Norton utilities always install all sorts of stuff on your computer. I dont advise anybody using their products.
ComputersRe: Project: PII MP3 Juke Box (Using Linux) by jogego(m): 7:33pm On Mar 28, 2006
I did something like that some time ago, I did a full install of Simply Mepis on a P2 Dell Latitude CPI laptop. I didnt do anything special apart from load all my MP3s on it, and insert a wireless card. I was able to stream this to anywhere I had wireless connection.

Mepis has a lot of multimedia codecs and plug ins installed by default in any case, what u want is a glorified file server.

Samba plays very well with windows networking and you should be able to access this box from your main machine without any problem.

@ dakmanzero please, and please, if you do not know about something please do not criticise it. I am sure you have not tried installing linux in the past three years.

I will repeat again, I have used windows from 3.1 up to XP. I have installed win ME, XP, 2000 professional, 2000 Advanced Server, 2003 on various computers in the past.

I have installed various flavours of Linux e.g Mepis, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Knoppix, Suse, Kanotix etc on various laptops over the past one year.

I have installed Mac OSX twice on an Imac.

WINDOWS
1. Install Windows OS
2.Install drivers for Network card, wireless card, printer, scanner, etc etc
3.Install Software such as MS Office, Firefox, Thunderbird
4.Install Anti-virus b4 connecting to interner.
5.Install plug-ins such as Java,Flash,Adobe acrobat etc

Time taken: Minimum 3 hours.

Can you use your computer while it is installing Windows: NO

Simply Mepis
1.Put in CD switch on to boot into Live CD mode
2.Install Mepis onto your computer

Over 2GB of software compressed into 700 MB CD image.
most neccessary software all included in install viz Open office V2.0, Firefox, THunderbird, Gaim etc
Plug ins installed along with Mepis: Flash, Java, Adobe acrobat etc
Drivers for all major printer hardware included. Printer, scanner, digital camera, network card, wireless card ALL work without installation of extra drivers.

Time taken to install: Maximum 30 minutes

During the installation, continue to browse the net or do whatever you want to on your computer.

Now, kindly tell me which you think is easier? Linux was difficult ages ago, but since last year when I started using Linux, I have been pleasantly impressed and as far as am concerned, it beats windoze hands down

Now
WebmastersRe: Is A Site With Flash W3C Compliant? by jogego(m): 6:04pm On Mar 28, 2006
Well, it goes to show that developers need to be more aware of the needs of their intended audience. The physically handicapped can use recent technologies as well. Apart from screen readers already mentioned, how many people know that Opera has the technology for using voice?

It seems as if I pot my point accross in the wrong way earlier on, but what I was trying to say was that web applications need to be accessible accross any platform. For example, Opera works on mobile phones and should render pages much in the same way as if it was being viewed on a computer.

I do not think this view of utopia can be achieved without developers thinking of making their applications viewable accross any platform.

Kompose in action. Pretty good and makes navigating easy if you are like me and have multiple windows open at the same time. Much like Expose on Mac OS.

ComputersRe: Screenshots of Our PC Desktops by jogego(op): 8:47pm On Mar 27, 2006
Niggy, seems you will need to give me a step by step how-to on how to get this kinda effect on my desktop. Still havent been able to get it.

@chxta, gnome is too hand holding though the new gnome in Ubuntu Dapper drake is really interesting. So many ideas from Mac OSX have been included making it all the more appealing for me.

My present Kubuntu Dapper drake desktop am running KDE 3.5.1 but will be upgrading it to 3.5.2 later tonight.

WebmastersRe: Is A Site With Flash W3C Compliant? by jogego(m): 6:56pm On Mar 27, 2006
@ Seun, the whole point of the W3C compliance is that any web application can work irrespective of browser or platform. So in ither words if you are trying to endure usability of your site, you are actually thinking of compliance.

If you are using Firefox, one of the extensions is used in checking and reporting errors for you while developing.
CultureRe: Yorubas In Nigeria That Can't Speak Yoruba by jogego(m): 6:05pm On Mar 27, 2006
We need to understand one thing for a fact, Yoruba is not spoken in every part of Nigeria. So for a child born in say Bama, or Monguno or Nguru which are remote parts of Borno State, likelihood is for the child to speak Hausa or Kanuri much easily than Yoruba.

While I was doing my NYSC in this part of the country, there were several Yoruba kids who I met who could not speka the language. The Ogbomoshos are famous for travelling and residing in practically any part of Nigeria or the west coast of West Africa.

It is easy to pick a language if it is spoken all around you.In a situation where the kid only hears Yoruba at home, it will be much more difficult for the kid to pick up the tongue.

Am not saying this is good, but this is one of the effects of the global movement of people.

Girl you got all that right, but forgot one thing.

Drogba should get an oscar for his acting antics on the pitch and very soon, I foresee him getting horribly injured and referee looking away because he has built a useless reputation for himself.

Personally will be rooting for liverpool to beat them senseless in the FA cup.

Oh and by the way, I got your back on this one, aint no Akola or any other chelsea fan going to hang you. After all, when they smell a gunner, they always run for cover tongue
