I replaced my int'l driving license for about N1500 last year plus cost of two passport pictures. It was done for me in Lagos. N17,500 is definitely on the high side. I am asuming you are talking about the Nigerian Int'l driving license for use outside 9ja.

As said earlier on. Not possible to install Windows on a G4 machine. Install MAc OS Panther on it. and you should enjoy it for a long time. If am right, it should have an inbuilt network card( Ethernet) so you can connect to the internet through a router

Just finished upgrading my Edgy thinkpad to Feisty Fawn development version Alpha 3. Everything working fine without any problem. Only difference I noticed is that the SLED is now included on the menu. Wireless, sound, ethernet, all working without any stress. Rebooting is superfast now though.

hayprof:

Hw do i install softwares in ubuntu when i av d files on my desktop?

Easiest way to install is like any Debian based distro using apt-get install, or better still use Synaptic. Synaptic will take care of all dependencies.

If the file is on your desktop, then right click on the file and click install with package installer.

Car Talk / Re: How Reliable Are BMW Cars? by jogego(m): 8:45pm On Dec 05, 2006
It has all been said b4. If you want a wonderful driving experience, get a BM. if you want a car, get a Toyota or Honda.

My first car was a Toyota, followed by a Honda Prelude.

My first BM was a 318i the old E30 and that thing was built like a bomb. I drove it once from Ikoyi to Isolo with no engine oil in it, by the time I got home, I was hearing a knocking sound from my engine. I thought the engine was gone. Two days later, I bought engine oil, put it in and it was as good as new. Try cornering at high speed in a BM, you feel safe and assured nothing could go wrong.

My second BM was also an E30, this time a 320i and it was also a glorious buy.

Fuel consumption was not too bad compared to the Honda and parts are not so hard to come buy. Ever heard of Ladipo? BM parts are awash there. Getting a very good mechanic though is not too easy, and if you get the wrong person, your car could be messed up.

Would I buy a BM again? I certainly would, without thinking twice about it.

Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by jogego(m): 8:43pm On Sep 29, 2006
Yeah I have seen that page several times but if you do go onto the ubuntu forums, you will see there are several issues especially with the wireless. For me, wireless not working is unacceptable. Also there has been problems getting the function keys and double-clicking working on the touchpad.

I had though that Edgy will sort this things out, but it seems that Edgy has yet to address these stuff though Fedora 6 seems to work much smoother on the macbook.

Well, am not getting my macbook till a few weeks so we shall see how Ubuntu runs.
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by jogego(m): 4:12pm On Sep 28, 2006
Now that is cool. Its such a pity Ubuntu cannot work seamlessly on the intel macs cos I want to get me a macbook. I might have to leave Ubuntu for Fedora or Suse who support the macbook without much stress.
Computers / Re: Where To Get Software For A Macintosh? by jogego(m): 3:40pm On Sep 28, 2006
what kind of software do you want? There are zillions of open source software that works on the mac. And don't let any one criticise your choice of such a sexy beast.

Computers / Re: Recommendations: Buying A New Laptop by jogego(m): 4:28pm On Aug 03, 2006
Mac os doesnt really have too much problems but then what about the new generation of laptops just released? Check on any mac forum and you'll see the myriad problems they have. Swelling batteries, random shutdowns, lines on the LCD, and of course logic boards being replaced oh, did I mention the problems that came with updating Mac OSX from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7?

I use an imac and truly if you were to read my earlier posts on this forum, you'd see I was waitng for the mac book to come out b4 I got another laptop but sincerely, I dont think I could ever spend my hard earned cash on a first generation apple product.

Having said that, no matter what hardware u use, if winblows will mess you up, it will mess you up. That was what made me change to Linux a few years back.

Honestly, If I take delivery of a new IBM tomorrow, am wiping the hard disk clean of everything including the restoration partition and installing mepis on it. Blaming software problems on the hardware is nothing but wrong.

Bottom line, you are entitled to your own opinion and am not trying to change it, but in my own experience, thinkpads are the rolls royce of laptops. Pure and simple.
Computers / Re: Recommendations: Buying A New Laptop by jogego(m): 4:13pm On Aug 03, 2006
What we need to differentiate is what is crashing, sofware or hardware? Most likely it is windows crashing and not the hardware. I am yet to see anybody tell me a thinkpad is not a good piece of hardware. My own has fallen down so many times and its still running. I run linux and not M$ and at times its on for close to a week without any stress. Most times, I just suspend it by shutting the lid and reopening the lid.
Computers / Re: Recommendations: Buying A New Laptop by jogego(m): 4:00pm On Aug 03, 2006
For what its worth, here is my 2 cents. Toshiba, Dell, HP are all good brands but I personally wouldnt buy aything other than an IBM thinkpad. Someone called HP a work horse but you dont know what a work horse is till you try an IBM. They are practically indestructible. Drop it on its head and it keeps going on.

Am also in the market for a new laptop. I had thought I would buy the new Apple macbook but subsequent postings on the web( google for macbook random shutdown) changed my mind. I am now definitely going to get am IBM. They are expensive but you get what you pay for as the saying goes.

Yes, you have virus issues with windows but not if you dont use windows. Ubuntu, Mepis, SUse etc are very good and user friendly.

I have used a Toshiba laptop b4 and have also had a Dell laptop b4 so am actually talking from experience. Sides you can get student discount if you buy online at IBM's web site.

You can visit this websites for reviews and other stuff

All the best. Out of curiosity, what apple laptop are you using? The old ibook or the new mac books? I checked out the new

apple laptops in a store yesterday and they looked as if the surface would be difficult to keep clean both white and black.

dakmanzero:

Ever since a recent hardware crash, I've wiped off my slackware installation and havent gotten around to reinstalling linux. I was thinking of going with Ubuntu because of all the praise, but what donmayor said has gotten me scared.

So I'd like to ask the ubuntu experts a few questions: Is ubuntu a 'bad boy' distro like slackware and knoppix/debian or is it a 'legally sound' distro like redhat?

I mean this in the sense that redhat requires kernel modifications for questionable functionality such as NTFS access, MP3 playback, CSS decryption support, strong encryption support, captive-NTFS support, full winex functionality, etc. It was a real pain battling redhat every step of the way. Slackware gave me freedom, because it used standard versions of all the software, patent violations notwithstanding, but I had to pay the price: No real package management and needing to compile practically every program I installed myself (imagine my dismay when the hard drive died)

Please help out. Downloading gigs worth of ISOs is a real problem for me. I had hoary hedgehog ISOs but but u can guess what happened to them!

I can only talk about mp3 playback, and yeah for legal reasons, Ubuntu does not include several plug ins but they are all available in the repositories so all you need to do really is install automatix. Google for automatix and you'd find it. For captive, I know Kanotix has it by default but since I dont have need to write to any NTFS disks I cant say how well it works.

To be honest, go to the forum for the distros u have in mind and am sure you'd ind if you can get all you want

If you are running Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehodge 5.04, you are about a year behind and need to upgrade to Breezy Badger 5.10 or once Dapper Drake 6.066 is released to Dapper.

Upgrading in Ubuntu is easy.

Step 1. Open terminal and type sudo geedit /etc/apt/sources.list and tten press enter

a file will open in your text editor.

Step 2. Use Find and replace to change all 'Hoary' in this file to 'Breezy' or 'Dapper' as you wish and then close the file after saving it

Step 3. In terminal type the folllowing

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

depending on how fast your internet connection is, you will soon have an updatted system.

Another tip for Ubuntu is to use auttomatix to install all proprietary codecs and plug ins such as acrobat, win32 codecs for playing mp3s, java, flash etc.

Just google for automatix.

Am personally back on Mepis, when Dappeer drake is finalised, then I might go back, but Gnome 4.14 is awesome and for the first time I actually enjoyed using Gnome

that is NOT JUST A RIPOFF in naija, it is plain and simple lunatic stupidity!!!!!!

spend more than 250g on a laptop here and u are seriously in need of help!

abeg no limit yaself ojare, if you have money you will buy better thing. While it is expensive, you get what you pay for. When your generic Dell or Acer is dead and buried, the apple laptop wwill still be working away. The IBM thinkpad is also quite expensive. New ultraportables cosing over $2000 but when you get it in your hand, you know its worth it. I have two old IBM thinkpads I use as my regular laptops and I wouldnt trade them in for a new Dell or Toshiba or what have you.

Having said all that, I cant in any good conscience pay that much on a laptop right now, but it doesnt hurt to dream and wish does it?

Nobody says Wenger is faultless, but his track record speaks for him. he doesnt buy ready made player, rather he scouts for young players and he molds them, unlike someone who is going to be buying Ballack this summer.

Vieria wanted to go. Where have you been for the past couple of years? Every summer, it was always will he or wont he. As far as am concerned, no player is bigger than the team. If he wants to go, let him go.

If Henry fails to sign a new contract, fine, then he goes. Arsenal will not die. That means Gilberto will be the one leading the team into Ashburton Grove.
