KingEbukasBlog: We need to get this straight there are two different notions of afterlife
i) Reincarnation ii) The doctrine of the Abrahamic religions
So let's stop basing our arguments only on the latter notion . wrong... Your second notion is grossly misplaced since the abrahamic religion doctrines on 'afterlife' is but a fraction to the totality of such differing beliefs in other religions. So bringing it under 'Abrahamic doctrine' is wrong and you need to correct yourself accordingly... |

4kings: Exactly what you can call "wishful thinking". It is irrational to believe in things without evidence. The predominant explanation for this, is "another realm". But how can u believe in a realm u've not gone to unless its just a formation of belief to suit your desire. One can deduct by studying every idea and concept afterlife [paradises] these are projections of man's greed and unsated lust for the things he regard good and wanting but yet very elusive in an existence that is sadly limited. |

malvisguy212: what do we consider the afterlife to be ? If it a physical place as your post imply. Using the scientific process, science cannot comment on it because we can't make measurement beyond our physical world. BUT we cannot say there is no afterlife because thousand of people cannot be hallucinating one thing. Since there is no way to ascertain or measure such a thing as you have shown - then how exactly would you come out and assert that such a thing is. If it is not measurable or proveable, then there is no way you can ever know of such a thing. |

Seun: Inasmuch as there is no evidence whatsoever for the existence of an afterlife, it's certainly irrational to believe in it. Near death experiences are just hallucinations. The belief in an afterlife is driven by our reluctance to accept our mortality. Instead of worrying about what happens after death, focus on prolonging your life as much as possible and doing the things you love most. A bird in your hand is worth plenty in the bush. So your argument is based on : the dread experienced by a human mind when faced with the cold eventuality and inevitability of death and a severe want and need for a soft landing psychological pillow, an escape route to derive comfort in this cold fate - this led to the him irrationally concieving the thought of living again [in a life he wouldn't have to face same dread again (immortality)] |

Ok let me start with the foundations that led to opening this up on nairaland.
Last week i was invited for a discussion by Menesheh held by a group "Thinkers Pub".
It held last thursday at Golden toast fast food Enugu, i went to the discussion and as you may have guessed the discussion was based on the topic.
Is it rational to believe in afterlife?
It was a very hot discussion filled with brilliant minds and tactful fun filled intellectuals, it was also like a battle of friendly debate between the sides and intellectually stimulating.
After the debate i found out after getting acquainted with the host and leader of the group that that he was once a well known nairalander on this board.
MrAnony1
we had personal arguments on our own i and Anony alongside menesheh after the group discussion and it was fun all the way.
Now the healthy fun filled warm and intellectually rich atmosphere of the live debate led me to opening this up here.
Is it rational to believe in afterlife?
If yes state your reasons
If no also state your reasons
We are also allowed on this discussion to attack each other's points but never with insults or attacking each other's personality.
Let's keep it a friendly and fun debate.

lordnicklaus: Now, I have been appalled recently by bashing threads posted by both religious peeps and our atheistic friends on this forum. The contents of such threads are nothing by incoherent squabbles which are quite infantile and are a showy display of cowardice and ego by people who are lagged of ingenuity and every sense of morality and self control and I do not want to consider anyone as such people. The most annoying part is the memes which are meant to mock each parties. Now I am starting a new thread, though I started a similar one months ago but it ended in tantrums and hubbubs. Now this is a time to let our views known. No mock tactics allowed, I will click the "report" link when I notice any uproar. Let the discussion begin. I thought i was the only one that noticed this, the recent obsessive childish battle raging on here. all you get is kids blowing their trumpet up and down, claiming victory without even having a debate, throwing up insults and memes everywhere, praising themselves and what they supposedly can do. it's just a show of pitiful ego massage... Let's hope they don't turn this thread into one of those. Cc. Loj come have fun too |

ValentineMary: OP see the problem here
freethiker: Evidence would change my mind
Theist: Nothing would change my mind
If I am to have discussion with a theist, he/she should be honest enough and not deny obvious truth. We were all theists before we got here. A theist may show a stubborn stoic conviction but we are all subjected to the unending pricks of our own mind, the judgement of our own ever lingering reason. So no matter how strong, stubborn, close minded, stoic someone may appear, at the end of the day everyone has their own demons to face and just a tiny seed of doubt can go a long way when watered with curioisity. I do not think there is anything like an obvious truth, FACTS rather. you may see colours and a bumble bee will see in gray x-ray.. this doesn't make 'colours' the obvious truth because to the bumble bee 'x-ray' is the truth. Let us always tamper our criticism with kind words, none of us comes fully prepared or knows it all. simply ignore any childish post directed at you or reply just with a 'k' that will keep it in check. |

@KingEtienneSky i agree with you, the world is ruled by dummies. Imagine in the U.S Donald Trump is running for presidency while Neil Degrasse tyson isn't even concerned.
At the end of the day a clown like trump will end up dictating the budget brilliant minds like Neil works with.
You can imagine the idiocy of the nuclear international treaty where it is prohibited to detonated nuclear power in space. [Which is why we dont have nuclear powered space probs now]
You can imagine such lunacy - how is it ok to hav nuclear bombs aimed at the planet earth but not ok to use same energy in space?
if there is anywhere we need nuclear power it is in space [for space exploration] not on earth, not for war fare not to kill ourselves and probably cause our own extinction.
i will elaborate on these in the coming chaptet of this work.
I hate the deceptive dumb greedy dirty secretive vainful chase and lust for power today's politics have become, i hate to be a part of it.

Politics › Re: Open Letter To Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, By A Stauch APC Supporter (READ) by johnydon22(m): 5:09pm On Aug 04, 2016 |
erunz: Dear Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,
Though I was one of those who made the system “hot” for you when you were in office through endless articles and criticism on national dailies and online blogs, however, I regret to say that just within 13 months that you relinquished the insignia of power, the prices of essential commodities have gone out of the reach of common people.
Things are so bad that Nigerians now steal pot of soup on fire. Nigeria is now drifting towards the ABACHA era. Nigerians have watched and still watching in aghast as things suddenly gone awry. No essential basic amenity is working in Nigeria as I write.
Your successors have refused to tar a kilometer of road since you left and those roads that you constructed, rehabilitated and reconstructed have been abandoned. The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has been technically scrapped.
Of course, things were not rosy under you but today, the situation is worst and pathetic.
Dear Goodluck Jonathan, I want to concur with your critics that you presided over a festival of corruption but common people never had it bad this way when you were in Abuja. We thought the economy was bad then, but today, it is hemorrhaging. The only thing working presently in Nigeria is the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s massive probe of your party’s CAMPAIGN FUNDS.
Nonetheless, the purpose of writing you this epistle is just to inform you that the Kaduna-Abuja Rail that you constructed and the train you bought for the use of Nigerians which WE called Locomotive product was commissioned by President Buhari a week ago.
Dear Dr. Jonathan, history will be kind to you for being the only President Nigeria ever had that has no skyscraper anywhere on the world. While your predecessor, Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar built private universities for themselves and their families, you built 12 and 6 public universities and polytechnics respectively for the use of Nigerians
Thousands of Nigerians got gainful employments through the aforementioned institutions.
The national minimum wage that you gave to Nigerians is now being taking away by those who took power from you. Prices of petrol, cooking gas and kerosene are no more within the reach of common people.
Yam, pepper, onions, rice, beans, garri and even corn are gradually becoming the food of the ELITES in Nigeria.
The federal teaching hospitals that you built and upgraded are now at the mercy of “no drugs”. Medical personnels are now working without motivation. It’s stories of strike actions everyday in the health sector.
The situation of power supply in Nigeria has gone from bad to poor. Massive jobs lost now pervade the organised private sector. Entrepreneurs are now wailing as businesses shutdown everyday.
The automobile motor plants that you facilitated to Nigeria are now returning back to when you brought them from.
Sadly and most Unfortunately, the media industry that connived with your opponents to send you out of office and still in conviviality with the government of the day, aka the ELITES, to the detriment of the common people.
Dr. Jonathan, please note that you are not a saint but time and events have proven that majority of your critics are empty barrels. They are noisemakers. Time has showed that they are worse than you.
The rights to speech and expression that we enjoyed under you has now moved from rights to privileges. Your wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, was derided as “local”, but she never called a sitting governor a MAD DOG.
Let me just stop here, Sir.
I’m Adeyemi Adeleye writing from Aafin Compound, Ilogbo-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Pdizzle: Nice thread johny, this is like the aftermath of what i'm looking for. I'm actually very interested in how our sense of being got stomped upon. What actually transpired when both races came in contact. We had our social systems and institutions in place, how did they got trumped upon. Obviously they won and the aftermath is what we are seeing today, but another point of reason is the asian countries, who despite being defeated; retained their culture and religion and are still even more developed than us. I know the slave trade did a lot of damage to our self esteem, but we really failed our ancestors. I'll start my research when i have time. Alright i might write a story on it, you know portray it in a story-like manner just like my "Untold story of Job" |
Christianity Etc › Re: Are There Any 100% Nigerian Atheists On Nairaland? by johnydon22(m): 3:43pm On Aug 03, 2016 |
GrizzlyBear: I had a discussion with an Atheist friend yesterday, and that discussion raised an interesting question. My friend, confidently proposed, that there is hardly any fulled blooded, 100% Nigerian, living in Nigeria,( and I'll explain the meaning of this phrase later on), that is an atheist. And as a reply to that, I happily told him I knew lots of 100% Nigerians on Nairaland who are Atheists. But his reply to this surprised me. He said that non of the Atheists on NL are 100% Nigerians.
And this brings me to the description of what a 100% Nigerian is. A 100% Nigeria is an individual who was born in Nigeria, to 100% Nigerian parents, did his primary and secondary school in Nigeria, wrote jamb and waec in Nigeria, and did his Higher institutional learning in Nigeria. He doesn't have non Nigerian relatives and hasn't been outside Nigeria before, at least before he became an Atheist.
Is there anyone like this on Nairaland? I really want to prove my friend wrong.
NB: Atheist, as used in this context, is just a general term for those who don't sympathize with Theism. You could be an Atheist or Deist or Pantheist or whatever vague term or description you choose to use to classify your views on mankind's purpose in the universe, that doesn't fall under organized religion. I am a 100% Nigerian going by the definition of a 100% Nigerian you have above and i am an atheist. so you have your answer now |
