Date Published: 11/05/09 N200 Million paid to free Pa Soludo The police in Anambra State this morning in Awka told journalists how abductors of Pa Simeon Soludo, father of former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Soludo, released the old man last night. He was said to have been released at a location in Uga in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. According to the police, the kidnappers had earlier called the Soludo family to inform them to collect their father late last night. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Oshodi Glover, who was in the family house this morning confirmed: “It is very true we have seen him (Pa Soludo) now. He is hale and hearty. He was released last night.” One of Pa Soludo’s children told P.M.News that the kidnappers had earlier in the day called the family to come for their father at the said location late last night. Another of his son told our reporter: “We are all happy that our father is released, but we are still sober.” He said he was in town to ensure he undergoes a thorough medical examination, to confirm his state of health. However, DCP Glover, while answering reporters’ questions, refused to confirm or deny the payment of any ransom to the kidnappers before Pa Soludo was released. There was speculation that N200 million was paid to the kidnappers before the old man was let off the hook. The internet was abuzz this morning with such speculation. But no Soludo family member was ready to confirm if such money was paid. And the police also denied such ransom was paid. The DCP confirmed that five persons have been arrested in connection with the kidnap saga while one of the abductors managed to escape. A at the time of going to the press, journalists were bared from speaking to Pa Soludo. His photograph was not allowed to be taken. The police insisted he needed to recover from the shock. Visitors were not allowed to see or talk to him. Pa Soludo was abducted by a five man gang of gun wielding kidnappers who stormed his family house in Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State in a balck Mercedes Benz ar at about 7.30 p.m on 27 October, 2009. The kidnapers initially demanded N500 million as ransom but they came down to N300 million later. There were speculations that the old man was abducted by agents of the political opponents of Charles Soludo, who lost out when the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, decided to nominate the former Central Bank Governor as the party’s standard bearer in the poll scheduled for February next year. The politicians however denied the accusation, accusing Soludo in turn for organising the kidnap of his father to paint the opposition black and evil. Last night, it was the former CBN governor who broke the news of his father’s freedom in a text message: “To God be the glory, my father has just been released by kidnappers. We are emboldened by this experience to dedicate our life to the service of our fatherland and to find lasting solution to the problem of kidnapping. Those who sought to break our will must be told that the wind of change in Anabram. http://www.pointblanknews.com/os2394.html |

500 Okija victims recount ordeal Daily Independent By Chris Agbambu, Deputy Bureau Chief, Abuja Shrines in Okija, Anambra State were chambers of horror and torture. About 500 victims have told police investigators how they were tortured to confess to crimes they knew nothing about. In turn, the police have tightened their noose on the detained priests who may be charged with multiple crimes against humanity. Since the news of their arrests, police investigators have been inundated with petitions from victims who allege one form of maltreatment or another by the priests. They said the ordeal usually started with an invitation by the priests alleging offences they were innocent of. One of the victims told the police in Abuja how the shrine operators extorted more than N3 million from him if he did not want to die. The victim, who pleaded anonymity, told the detectives that it was by the special grace of God that he is alive, having met their demands. In their own petition to the police, the Igbo community in Kwara State narrated how they were summoned to the shrine. The younger brother of the captain of the Super Eagles, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, was also at the police headquarters to tell detectives how the footballer was summoned to the shrine. The victims said they came voluntarily to narrate their experiences so that when the list of the names in the shrine registers are published, Nigerians would not be surprised, “because most of them were victims of circumstances”. Wabara: Why Are Igbo Forests Not For Tourism? FROM SEUN ADEOYE (OSOGBO) AND UZOMA NZEAGWU (AWKA) SENATE President Adolphus Wabara beheld the spectacle of the Osun Festival in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, perhaps for the first time yesterday. He surveyed the grove that has continued to provide appreciable revenue to the state through revenue. The Igbo high chief also witnessed the thousands of religious faithful and culture enthusiasts, mostly women, who joyfully thronged the festival, resplendent in their all-white Iro and Buba. He recognised that the deep Osun grove was not in any material way different from the traditional shrines in the South East. In the midst of it all, the Senate President could not but wonder aloud: "Why would my people, the Igbo, use their God-given forests for ritual killings and not tourism" Wabara's poser was an inadvertent reaction to the discovery of some horror shrines in Anambra Sate by the police on Wednesday, habouring about 50 dead bodies and 90 skulls. The Senate President, while speaking at the Osun-Osogbo shrine wondered why people of Igbo origin "rich in culture", should be using their forests for human sacrifice. He lauded the people and government of Osun State for protecting their culture, particularly how the shrine was being used for tourist attraction Wabara noted that thousands of people from within and outside Nigeria visit the Osun grove yearly for cultural and tourism purposes. He said: "it is sad that our people (Igbo indigenes) with this type of edifice, will use it for such wicked and nefarious activities. I've looked around and I did not see any corpse, either fresh or old, and I cannot see any human skull. This forest was protected by the people for great occasions like this." The Senate President therefore urged the people of the South-East "to go back home" and ensure that "such activities not fit for the century are stopped and our thick forests are protected." At the Osun-Osogbo festival attended by thousands of people, Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola said that the event had gone beyond religion but was now a "celebration of our cultural heritage." Oyinlola said that the significance of the festival had increased over the years. "As you can see, we have both Christians and Moslems alike gathering for this great event," he said. While pledging the support and cooperation of his government with the UNESCO on the developmental progress of the Osun grove, Oyinlola said that his administration would exchange partnership with private individuals and organiations in the promotion of culture and tourism. The governor who disclosed that Osun cultural carnival would hold from August 27 to September 3, implored the organizers of Osun-Osogbo festival to sustain and maintain the current tempo of the festival. Professor Wande Abimbola, Special Adviser to the President on Culture, who represented President Olusegun Obasanjo, prayed for those who attended the event and pledged the president's support for the event. The week-long activities of the festival ended with prayers and sacrifices at the grove where participants went back home with water fetched from the river as source of divine favour and blessings. And in an attempt to dig out more facts surrounding the Arusi Okija "Shrine" in Ihiala Local Government area of Anambra State, the Police Headquarters Abuja has dispatched more policemen to the state. This is however coming on the heels of strong criticisms of the police raid by the Pan Igbo Socio cultural group, Ohaneze which argued that worshippers at shrines was a non-issue in Nigeria. A police source said the Inspector General, Mr Tafa Balogun had sent some policemen and detectives from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to dig deeper into the forest. It was learnt that a confessional statement from one of the suspects earlier arrested in the police raid this week might have prompted the IG's action, suggesting that it is a mop up operation to pick up suspects who escaped arrest. The Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Kolapo Shofoluwe told The Guardian that investigation into the matter was still on. Early last week, Shofoluwe had stated that Police Headquarters, Abuja would send more reinforcements to strengthen efforts of the State Command. But in a sharp reaction, the Secretary General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Col Joe Achuzia (rtd), described the police action as ridiculous, and a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of the Igbo , saying the issue portrayed the ethnic stock as cannibals. Source: http://www.igbonews.co.uk/html/okija2.html |
Otokoto again in Imo! Girl, 18, beheaded for rituals Headlines Aug 19, 2009 By Chidi Nkwopara Residents of Owerri were Wednesday morning treated to a morbid spectacle as the police command paraded four suspects and the decomposing head of an 18-year old Chinwe Doris Perpetua Obieri, who was murdered for ritual purposes. The bizarre scene, which was a replica of the infamous Otokoto saga of September 1996, had the prime suspect, 24-year old Emeka Uwakwe, from Ndiakunwata, Arondizuogu, Ideato North local government area of the state, clutching the decapitated head of his girl friend, Chinwe. Speaking to newsmen, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aloy Okorie, gave the names of the other suspects as Chigamezu Anyaoha from Orodo, Mbaitoli local council area, Anthony Obioha from Lude, Ahiazu Mbaise local government area, and the medicine man, Damian Joseph from Obot Akara, Akwa Ibom State. Mr. Okorie gave a graphic account of how the sordid crime was committed and the efforts made by the state police command to apprehend the suspects in far away Lagos State. Excerpts:“You can see we have a case of murder for ritual murder. What happened was that on Sunday, July 26, 2009, the young lady whose head you are seeing (pointing at the decapitated head of Chinwe) left her Akokwa home, Ideato North local government area of Imo State. You can see the head without the body. Late Chinwe before her death “The young man, Emeka Uwakwe, is the boy friend of this girl and he came all the way from Lagos and lured her to his house in the village. He murdered the girl, cut off her head for ritual purpose and dumped the headless body in a bush. Apparently, the girl had told her parents that she was going to visit her maternal uncle in another village. “As at 7.04pm on that same Sunday, she called her parents and informed them she was already in her maternal uncle’s compound and they believed her. Later, her parents made a call to her and the call was not pulling through up till the next morning and by Monday when it was obvious that she was not coming back, they made a report to the police that their daughter was missing. “The names of the parents are Mr. Nicholas and Mrs. Theresa Obieri from Umuezeala, Umueziama Kindred in Akokwa. It was after they made the report to the police that some vigilante people on the same date, came around and said they saw a headless body in the bush. The police invited the girl’s parents and they identified the headless body to be that of their daughter. “It was at that point that the police swung into action and started making investigations. From information, we got to know that she had a boy friend who is resident in Lagos and who was seen around home within that period. So, we went to Lagos and we were able to arrest Emeka Uwakwe. You can see him now with the head of the slain girl (pointing at Emeka). “When we now got him, he made a confession that Mr. Damian Joseph of Obot Akara in Akwa Ibom State, though he is based in Lagos also, was the one who made the charm with which, if he got the head of this girl, mix it with the charm and bury it, money will start flowing, he will start plucking money as if he was plucking fruits from the tree. That was exactly what the man did. He (Emeka) got the concoction, mixed it with the head and buried it in his room. “We also went for the Native Doctor and got him. Meanwhile, Emeka made a confession too that it was his friends, Chigaemezu Anyaoha and Anthony Obioha, that introduced him to the Native Doctor and that he was capable of making medicine for money. They also confirmed that they had done such a medicine before with human scrotum. We do not know whether it their own scrotum or other people’s scrotum. We will surely find out in due. “You can see the pretty 18-year old girl (displaying her photograph). I am sure if you had seen this girl when she was alive, you will weep. You will certainly weep because I have never seen a thing like that in my life. I just imagine my own daughter of that age being slaughtered for ritual purposes. “Well, in an era where we talking about people going to live in the moon, that is the age we are in, 21st century, and people are still being fooled that they can use human head to make money. It is very unfortunate. “Emeka Uwakwe was arrested on Wednesday last week (August 12, 2009) and when he gave us the information on how he got about the whole show, our men left for Lagos on Sunday and we were able to arrest both the Native Doctor and the other two boys. The next line of action is that they will pay the price prescribed by the laws of the land. We all know the price for somebody who has committed murder. He will pay with his own life. There is no duplicate for life. If he had the courage to kill somebody, he should also be prepared to face the consequence. He should be in a position to say if he killed her with a knife or first strangulated her before he cut off the neck. “It is very clear that the girl deceived her parents. My advice is simple. I have a daughter of that age. I know how we monitor her. Most times, especially in this era, if she has to go out, we must let go with somebody because you never can tell. That age is a critical period in the training of children. Parents should monitor their daughters closely. It is easy to make contacts in this GSM era. I am sure that if the parents had raised alarm that very night they did not see her, may be things would have come out differently. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=2&ved=0CAsQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vanguardngr.com%2F2009%2F08%2F19%2Fotokoto-again-in-imo-girl-18-beheaded-for-rituals%2Fcomment-page-17%2F&ei=PCvySp3fHdGVtge02Om6Cw&usg=AFQjCNEdyLoiWQI6LIXl2DcNqZUT-xPJjQ |

Urhobo elders blast Clark over attacks on Ibori National News Nov 5, 2009 By Daniel Gumm & Luka Binniyat ABUJA — Elders of Urhoboland, yesterd-ay, in Abuja condemned statements made by Chief Edwin Clark in which he protested that the trial Judge handling the case of Chief James Ibori – former Gover-nor of Delta State – be removed from the case. The elders also lampooned Chief Clark for alleging that the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondokaa was plotting to set free Chief Ibori through the creation of the Asaba division of the Federal High Court. Addressing the press, yesterday, on behalf of Urhobo Chiefs and Elders, Chief Peter Kpogan said, “what Chief E. K. Clark has been doing amounts to vexation and irritating meddlesomeness designed to destract the Judge and the court process. “Since his recent actions amount to contempt, Chief Clark should be arraigned for contempt and summarily tried for same,” he said “Chief Clark is exercising his freedom of speech,” he went on, “but his liberty to do so must not be an obstacle to truth and fairness. “As a citizen of Delta State, and indeed Nigeria, his interest in the matter is already being represented by the Fedeal Government which is prosecuting the case on behalf of everyone. “The Ijaw Chief should not ascribe to himself alone the executive capacity to make noise in order to draw unearned attention to himself always. He must allow the case involving the former governor of Delta State to run its full course, and stop meddling in a matter that is before a court of competent jurisdiction. It is the court that would determine the case as provided for in the country’s constitution,” he added. Meanwhile, the Itsekiri Democratic League (IDL), yesterday, said the state-ments by the Oghara elders which was signed by Chief Oboh, the Iyasere of Oghara, must be taken seriously in view of the history behind Chief Clarke’s recent hatred for Ibori. The Itsekiri group noted that, “prior to the emergence of Dr. Uduaghan as the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2007 gubernatorial election, Chiefs E. K. Clark and Ibori were in concubi-nage and always hands in glove, particularly during the period when Itsekiri lands were being invaded by their neighbours.” The group said the relationship immediately turned sour when Dr. Uduaghan was proclaimed the PDP flag-bearer for Delta State, “a phenomenon which Clark could not tolerate, given the fact that Uduaghan is of Itsekiri extraction”. “Since then Clark has not stopped blaming Ibori for the emergence of Uduaghan as governor and using all fora to seek revenge.” According to the Itsekiri group, the transfer of cases from one jurisdiction to another is not new in law and Clark as “a lawyer ought to know this.” Speaking further, the leader of the group, Mr Johnson Oghomone called on Chief Clark to stop meddling in judicial matters in any guise. up Delta state. ![]() http://www.vanguardngr.com/2009/11/05/urhobo-elders-blast-clark-over-attacks-on-ibori/ |
