LCCI targets 1.5 million visitors as trade fair begins tomorrow
Business Nov 4, 2009 By Franklin Alli

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) has targeted over 1,500,000 visitors from within and outside the country as the 2009 edition of the Lagos International Trade Fair, kicks off tomorrow.

A source from the Chamber, Tuesday, told Vanguard, that each year the fair attracts more than 10,000 visitors per day (estimate from tickets sold), and hundreds of exhibiting companies, stressing for the ten days we anticipate 1.5 million people to visit the fair including businessmen, investors, consumers, top government officials and representatives of Nigeria’s important trading houses and those seeking joint-venture partnerships.

Dubbed as the ‘biggest and the best’ trade expo in the country organisers said that the fair offers a unique exposition for manufacturers, suppliers, buyers and users of a wide range of goods and services as well as opportunities for investment and trade promotion.

The source further disclosed that although, the LCCI has acquired a new site for future hosting of the annual fair, yet the fair will still be holding at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos, until work is completed at the new site.
However, trade fair experts say trade shows are one of the best ways for companies to get in front of their customers .

“Exhibiting at a trade show offers companies one of the best ways to get in front of a lot of customers and prospects in a relatively short amount of time. Trade shows give firms the opportunity to not only show their product or describe their service, but also create that all important first impression,” According to a Simmons Market Research Bureau study, 91 per cent of respondents ranked trade shows as “extremely useful” as a source for product purchasing information. This was higher than any other source, including on_site visits from reps. Also, nearly half of the respondents had purchased products or services at the trade show.

At a typical national trade show, with 10,000 attendees and 1,000 exhibitors, a firm can realistically have 200 visitors per day.
If you were making sales calls, you could not even approach that number. Granted, you don’t always have the opportunity to go into as much detail in your presentation as you would like, but it opens the door for future communications _ a door that sometimes is very difficult to get your foot into.

So for most companies, trade shows are worth the effort.
In fact, before a company decide wether or not to attend a trade show it is worthwhile to pounder about what that might say to your current customers who expect to see you there.

This is especially damaging if your company has been through recent staffing/management changes, mergers, acquisitions, or other changes your clients may have caught wind of. Your competition will use your absence to their advantage. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever stop attending a show, but just be sure you think about whom you see there and what your company’s absence may lead them to believe. If necessary, send a post card to your primary clients that you know attend that particular show, and explain your decision to attend show B rather than show A.

Before you even start looking for shows, you need to set your goals. To help you do this, there are four questions you need to ask yourself: Why are you exhibiting?

Are you trying to extend your relationship with existing customers?

Introducing a new product? Positioning your company within the market? Generating qualified leads for new sales? Countering a competitor’s claim? Who is your target audience? What is the message you want to convey?
What do you want to get out of the show? Do you want to bring home leads, sell your product/service, or create/improve/build upon your company image? You need specific, measurable goals if you want your trade show activities to succeed.

Benin City Wears A New Look
With Tessy okwudi

THE demolition of illegal structures in the state metropolis, which started sometime in May 2009, by the Edo State task force on the demolition of illegal structures, street Trading and the Removal of Road traffic obstruction has changed the face of the city to a very dynamic nature.

It is really “Dynamic in nature” because the way the state looks or is looking at the moment, is the natural way the state should have looked like many years ago. Nature they say “is unique” in the sense that no matter what we do in life, nature must take as full cost at the right time.

A lot of people reading this article might want to ask, what is the relationship between the demolition of illegal Structures and Nature? This boils down to the saying that “No matter what we do, it will snap back at us”. Why are my saying this? It is only natural for the state to come to its Master Plan irrespective of the process that might be required.

Now to answer the aforementioned question, “the relationship between nature and demolition” is that it is only demolition of illegal structures in the state that can bring the state back to its natural look (Master Plan).

The both work together in bringing out the original Master Plan of our “Ancient City of Benin”. Demolition of illegal structures have turned the city into a glamourous state if you go to ring road, Akpakpava and environs. Presently, you will agree with me that “positive change is sweet”.

Last week, the task force on the Demolition of illegal structures “rolled out their bulldozers to do justices to some illegal structures that either encroached on government right of way, that is, that did not maintained the specific perimeter which is 15 meters for Trunk A road (Grade A Federal Government road) 12 meters for trunk B road (Grade B, state Government road) and 7.5 meters for Trunk C road (Grade C, Local Government road). Or the structures had an extension that is not in the original building plan, as the case may be”. For buffer zone, its 50 metres from the buffer zone. Especially at the Ikpoba Hill, Ramat Park Aduwawa axis and Lagos Street, such illegal structure were affected.

The demolition report says will go round the Aduwawa axis, down Eyaen to Urora, infact it will clear all the illegal structures along that axis.

During this demolition exercise, it was discovered that some persons erect their structures without the appropriate building plan, some had a plan for one structure but erected another one and attached it to the one with building plan, this is absorbed.

These persons had their shares during the demolition, it should be noted that there is every need for you to get an approved building plan from the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Housing so that you could save yourself some stress or the stress of running around.

At the Aduwawa, some illegal structures were pull down by the task force on the demolition of illegal structures under the supervision of Major Lawrence Loye (Rtd) first Vice Chairman incharge of operations along with Charles Ize Iyamu and other members and some mobile policemen.

At the moment, if you go to Ikpoba-Hill, down Aduwawa axis in the state metropolis, you won’t believe what you will see.

A lady who was affected as well, by the Demolition of illegal structures, whose shop’s attachment was removed, spoke to The NIGERIAN OBSERVER stating that “As you can see my shop was affected, but I like what is going on, this place look new, I felt it so hard, I know I have to call a carpenter to work here but even at that, the truth must be told. We need change in this Benin, everybody must be ready to make a sacrifice, I know it will affect most of the structures in this Ikpoba-Hill, but it should be done. I have made my own sacrifice so I encourage people to welcome this, but I really want to appeal to the state Government to sustain the tempo to ensure that it goes round Benin City”.

Another lady who was crying at the scene of demolition because she was equally affected, in tears she said “well I know the government want to restore the state Master Plan, they gave us notice almost 3 months ago, we would have packed Oh, but out landlord deceived us to say, they won’t come to Aduwawa, so he convinced us to pay another one year rent (1 year) so that he will put things right; most of us paid”. When asked about the whereabout of the landlord, she looked at me and gave a mischievous smile and walked away.

Only God knew what she wanted to say, then I became inquisitive, I went to another occupant of the demolished illegal structures who had earlier packed, infact he was smarter than the landlord’s plan, he refused to give his name but referred anonymity, “the landlord has ran away after he collected the money from some people, but I was smart, since I got the information that he erected these shops on government land and I saw the mark for demolition, I started parking, but some of us here were very stubborn, that is why some are affected, they are very lucky that the task force gave them time to pack their luggages. In Lagos, nobody waits for you to pack, the moment they gets there, they will just put their bulldozer”, (he smiled). For an occupants or landlord, claiming that he can save this house that has been earmarked for demolition, it is barbaric.

At this juncture, I will like to bring to the notice of those whose illegal structures (shops) has been earmarked for demolition, not to pay money to any landlord or landlady who claims that he/she can stop the demolition but rather quickly look for another shop that is safe and move, instead of been deceived.

I will not forget to discuss the Lagos Street demolition report that says, it was done to create Government right of way and to remove extensions to the buildings that is used for street trading, it should be recalled that the Lagos Street, is a place that has been a centre for street traders despite the warnings and the mobile court prosecution of street traders in the state metropolis.
PoliticsRe: Oshiomhole Administration Is A Year Old by jona2: 8:46pm On Nov 04, 2009
Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s Administration Is Great -Mrs. Etemire
By Henry Balogun

The Edo state council for Arts And Culture won bronze medal in the moon lighting game category at the recently concluded NAFEST held in Minna Niger state. Interestingly this is the first time in decades that the state had won any laurel at any of the festival for Arts and culture.
The Nigerian Observer sought the views of the Acting Director of the Council Mrs. Maria Etemire on recent developments in the council.

According to her “when we were preparing for NAFEST, unlike other years, we were not too sure if we will be able to attend because there were years we had packaged events for the NAFEST, and our dreams were not actualized due to lack of funds, but this time around, the Comrade Governor was kind to us to have approved something for us to travel with and with that, we were able to package some events. Infact I must inform you, that if you were there, you will know that Edo State did not just come to participate, we were fully represented and fully loaded to take what belong to us.

As far as we are concerned, culture is for the people of Edo state and no wonder, after the opening ceremony on the 1st of October 2009, the Niger state government owned Newspaper, NEWSLINE of October 14 had no alternative but to feature Edo state contingent as they appeared in the opening ceremony on their front page. And to us, that is a recognition of the fact that we were not casual in that outing. And we were a force to be reckoned with. And we went with a group of children to present us in the moonlight game. We have always been attending in time past, but never had we come back with laurel. This year however, we came back with a bronze, and we are grateful to God because it was my first outing to NAFEST as a Director. And I think they knew that Edo State came and we performed. Infact one of our Edo sons described us like this “Edo State came, you saw and you conquered.” To God be the glory. This is a good beginning as far as we are concerned to achieving greater things for Edo State. In the past ten years, Edo State has never won anything, not even a certificate in NAFEST. So this is a stepping stone to greater heights, they are waiting for us because they knew what they saw in NAFEST, they have never seen before I am sure they are waiting, because we are going to have an opportunity to showcase Edo state culture at the forth coming Abuja festival. Preparation has started and we are hoping and convinced that the state government would energise us so that we can take the world by surprise by taking our pride to place of culture that belongs to the people of Edo State, so when other states assume that they are the custodian of culture, if we arise and take our position, none of them will be able to stand, and I believe that one day, we are going to establish some art industries, encourage our youths to try their hands on art so that the state can be a better place of art for everyone of us”

Speaking further, Mrs. Etemire who holds a Bachelor degree in public Administration and MBA post graduate degree obtained from the University of Benin disclosed that the coming of the Comrade Governor has been an eye opener to the people of Edo state especially among the sincere and hard working civil servants who are committed to attain excellence in their service career. She elaborates “In my first meeting with the workers of the Arts council, I told them that this administration is a great one as far as I am concerned, because when you are working with a group of people, there may be many ideas within you that you will not be able to bring out and such ideas no matter how beautiful may die with some people. So I told my workers that this administration led by the Comrade Governor has afforded us the opportunity to bring out all the potentials in each and every one of us, and we have the opportunity to exhibit our potentials. And nothing can be greater than the fact that we have the opportunity to perform and provided with the enabling environment in which to perform.

When the Governor was for instance talking on the need to improve on IGR, many people thought otherwise, but I must tell you that now our eyes are opened because we now know that it is a necessity, because it has made us to look inwards to begin to make our activities to be up to standard. And without the encouragement of the Comrade Governor, most of the things we have been able to achieve here would have been impossible. For instance, in the past regimes I have heard where people were told “you are over ambitious that is why you are doing this and that,” but in this administration, ambition is rewarded, and it is an encouragement to us. At this juncture, I would want to speak more on our recent participation at NAFEST 2009. In Minna, it was obvious that our Comrade Governor was highly regarded. You know, as a former union leader, he is known world – wide.

A lot of positive comments came from those who visited our pavillon at NAFEST. And I am happy to inform you that we took their artistic impression of what they said, and one of the visitors that came Mr. P.A. Clark from Delta State wrote thus “with what I have seen, I am convinced for the first time Edo State have shown that they have a governor. Edo was has been poorly represented in the past NAFEST, kudos to you Comrade Oshiomhole. Keep it up”.

Infact this is very encouraging to us. There was somebody who came from Cameroon, an elderly man and he made this statement “I am proud of Adams Oshiomhole,” he also gave me a letter to deliver to the Comrade Governor because of what he had seen of the packing at the Edo State pavillon. I am sure that if we were shabbily packaged, such comments would not arise. So I am grateful for this opportunity to be a Director in one of the parastatals in Edo state that is under a very vibrant, trustworthy and an action Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Mrs. Etemire who assumed Leadership of the state council of Arts and Culture in August 2009, having worked at same for more than two decades has been variously described as a woman of immense intellectuality, visionary and excellent manager of both human and material resources also gave kudos to the commissioner of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Vincent Akhere and the permanent secretary pastor Mrs. Agatha Igologba for their assistance and cordial relationship with the council.

She stated thus “I have been in this Arts council for so many years that I have not seen this kind of co-operation from our supervising ministry. This is a relationship that is beyond. And talking of my commissioner Hon. Vincent Akhere, he has been a father to me, while my PS, Pastor Mrs. Igologba is my mother, infact there is no need to talk of any supervisory ministry, I actually have my father and my mother at that end and they have been wonderful. They have not given me any cause to regret, nor any opportunity to say why am I working with these kind of people. They have carried me along in what ever they are doing, and encouraged me on every side.”

On her vision for the future of the Arts council, Mrs. Etemire enthused thus “I want to see a council that is liberated, that is doing the right thing. Our custodian of culture, our Royal father, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa, the Oba of Benin will be so glad to see that we take our pride of place.

Some years back, when we visited our Royal father, my heart bled when he made a statement, he said “this state went to carnival, when I watched it on television I was ashamed.” And he made another specific statement, he said “please if you are not going in the future, why not just send my artiste Alele.” And I am happy to say that Alele is one of our staff. So we have capable hands, those who are talented and we hope to achieve greater successes.

Lagos Council To Construct Roads At N20b
By RAHEEM IBRAHIM

LAGOS - The Amuwo- Odofin Local Government Council in Lagos has concluded arrangement to reconstruct all the roads in Festac Town with concrete in order to make it durable at the cost of N20 Billion.

The council boss comrade Adewale Ayodele who made the disclosure while fielding questions at a media parley on the achievement of his administration said the move becomes imperative in order to give the roads the status they deserve.

He however said the roads will be tolled to enable the financiers recoup their money, disclosing that the duo of construction giants of Julius Berger and the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) have begun preliminary work on the project.

His words, “We are looking for N20 billion for the reconstruction of the roads, we want to make them durable. They have become so bad because they were constructed with just literate, they have no stone and concrete, but we want to use asphalt so that they can last longer”.

On the funding, the chairman said some options are being considered by the stakeholders, which include offshore, local bank which will attract 20% and bond which will also attract 4%.
While commenting on the toll, he said the council on the understanding that residents are mostly retirees, has decided to make payment simpler, saying they will be made to pay between N15, 000.00 to N20, 000.00 monthly at four installments, while motorists on transit would be made to pay a fixed charge that is commensurate with best practice.

He pointed out that most of the roads were constructed with mere literati without asphalt and concrete befitting a residential enclave of international repute which the town represents, leading to the dilapidating and bad condition which they are presently.

Ayodele said the town was built for merely 300,000 people, adding that the population has in the course of time increased to 800,000, which had brought pressure on the roads and other available infrastructure.

The council boss blamed the Federal Government for the predicament of the roads and for allowing them to suffer neglect for so long a time, even as he appealed to the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), the manager of the estate to live up to its billings.

He stressed the determination of his administration to address infrastructural decay, economic issues and future opportunities for growth and transformation necessary to achieving the economic vitality and prosperity desired in the council area.

Investors flee Anambra as armed robbers, kidnappers take over

In a commando-style operation, no less than 20 armed men Friday afternoon in Awka, capital of Anambra State kidnapped millionaire businessman and chairman of Pokobros Group of Companies, Chief Paul Okonkwo, heightening the spectre of violence which has become the lot of the state since the beginning of the year.

Okonkwo’s abduction came less than 24 hours after the wife of a prominent politician in the state and former governorship candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Nwokoye was kidnapped in the same Awka, and four days after dare-devil armed robbers swooped on Nnewi, killing at least eight persons after serially robbing a chain of banks.

And penultimate Monday in Umuawulu, a few kilometers from Awka, suspected assailants had chased a former chairman of Awka South council, Chief Chukwudi Okafor, into the local Catholic Church before emptying over six magazines of bullets on the politician. He died instantly.

advertisement

The upsurge in violent crimes in Anambra State, particularly kidnappings, has forced several residents of the state which reportedly has the most number of millionaires in Nigeria, to relocate their families. For many families, Asaba, the capital of Delta State, is said to be the destination of choice, for now.

Eyewitnesses told Pointblannews.com that about 4 pm, a band of fully armed youngsters in SUVs had trailed Okonkwo from his Pokobros Hotel on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway and blocked his jeep on the same expressway.

“They literarily plucked him out of his jeep into theirs before speeding off through Zik (Nnamdi Aziiwe) Avenue. When they encountered some traffic snarl, these boys opened fire causing serious confusion as people scampered for safety. Funny enough, they passed the state Police secretariat, the Prisons headquarters unchallenged before heading for the road to Agulu,” offered an eyewitness.

Sources close to the multi-millionaire politician and businessman, Nwokoye, told Pointblanknews.com that the wife of the businessman, who was in Italy to inspect a consignment of sanitary wares, was abducted as she made to drive into her mansion.

“Two boys were sighted loitering, but they didn’t look sinister. As soon as madam drove in, they rushed into the compound, gun in hand, and ordered her into their car which they had cleverly concealed near our gate. Oga is on his way back to negotiate with the kidnappers so that he can, at least, have his wife back,” the source narrated.

A very successful clearing and forwarding agent, Chuwudi Okafor, who had fallen out with Governor Peter Obi, had hinted close associates that he was set to dump Obi’s All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Amuluonyenaego (Chukwudi) had approached on the eve of his death that he was interested in the Awka Federal Constituency seat, and that he was set to declare for PDP. I encouraged him to go and register in his ward, and he agreed. We agreed to see again the next weekend. That was the last we saw,” lamented a PDP chieftain.

With the police have yet to make any arrests on Chukwu’s assassination, pressure is said to be mounting on Governor Obi to come out clean on the matter. “We strongly believe that Amuluonyenaego is a victim of state-sponsored terrorism. How come he was killed after falling out with Peter (Obi), and just days before declaring for PDP?” quizzed a PDP chieftain.

And in Isuofia, Okonkwo’s village, accusing fingers are said to be pointing the way of a former Governor of the Central Bank, Professor Chukwuma Soludo. The former bank chief has for years been locked in a battle for supremacy with Okonkwo, culminating in Soludo balkanizing the town and rechristening his own part Isu Anioma. Okonkwo remained Oji (Prime Minister of) Isuofia.

So worrying is the frequency and ease of robberies and kidnapping to the people of the state that a legislator from the state told Pointblanknews.com that “most of us have found out that it is cheaper to relocate your aged parents and children than to pay ransoms.”

He lamented that the Peter Obi administration appeared confused whilst the security situation in Anambra state spirals out of control. He claimed that there have been at least 60 high profile kidnappings in the state since the beginning of 2009.

“Peter Obi is busing fighting his deputy and her son, Emeka. He is trying to maintain a false mien that all is well, when most of his aides are disorientated and resigning in droves. Armed robbery has peaked, and we now top the chart in kidnapping, a hitherto unknown phenomenon. If nothing urgent is done to nip this trend, I fear Anambra may become worse than Mexico or Colombia,” he declared.

Boat Mishap: 40 Corpses Recovered, 15 Missing

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Forty corpses have so far been recovered while 15 people are still missing in a boat mishap that occurred along Nano river, boundary between Bukuro in Baruten local government council area of Kwara state and Yariwondo village in Republic of  Benin just as the state government confirmed that no  indigene of the state was involved in the incident.

Already, the state governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki,  has sent a delegation led by his Special Adviser on Emergency and Relief Services, Alhaji Suleyman Yusuf,  to ascertain the level of the situation at  the scene of the incident. The chairman of Baruten local government area, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed,  who spoke at a press conference in Ilorin yesterday on the incident said though the incident was sympathetic and sad, both the local and state government would do everything possible to assist those that might have been affected by the incident.

According to him, “ the incident occurred due to the fault developed by the boat carrying the school pupils and the market women  on the river  but  the other boat coming behind  wanted to rescue the people inside the faulty one and at the end, the boat capsized.”

He said  it was at this point that the villagers, especially the fishermen rushed to the scene of the incident on a rescue mission and the remains of 40 of the victims  were recovered from the river  while 15 people were reportedly still missing as the time of filling this report. "As the chairman and the chief security officer of my local government area, I wish to state without any iota of truth of contradictions that all reports made available to us so far have not indicated that a single citizen from my local government area or Nigeria was involved in the sad incident,  he added.  The ugly incident is believed to have claimed 50 lives

Robbers raid 4 banks in Imo
From VAL OKARA, Owerri

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

A gang of dare-devil armed robbers numbering about 15 on Monday attacked four banks located in the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State and carted away undisclosed sum of money running into millions of naira.

The hoodlums who stormed the banks in commando like operations with two tinted jeeps had on arrival taken strategic positions and blocked the ever busy Owerri-Umuahia road at the popular Eke Ahiara junction.

With continuous heavy shooting into the air, which reportedly lasted for several hours to stir possible opposition from the security agents, the robbers eventually had their way and made away with their loots.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Alloy Okorie upon the receipt of the news of the robbery incident promptly cut short his meeting with top police officers at the command and personally led an anti robbery squad to the scene.

At the time of filing this report the CP and his team were said to have been combing Mbaise areas and its environs in other to arrest the hoodlums.

Also, the casualty figures could not be ascertained at the time of filling this report but sources said a number of casualties were recorded while the injured had been rushed to nearby hospital.
