Also, what is a recession? a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. So what happens after one quarter of negative economic growth? you slash interest rates to prevent the economy from going into a recession and that's what we did, we had no choice. The slashing of interest rates and the Bush tax cuts is what got us of that severe slump we were in. Also, interest rates are not only used for fighting inflation but for staving off a recession. Look man, when our backs were against the wall, we did what we had to do.

The controlling mechanism should be inflation. not keeping interest rates in a band is disastrous. You should read up on the Bank of Canada's monetary policy and see why we were not as devastated as our American counterparts
