In a country that directly supports the segregation of her people on ethnic/religious grounds is it no wonder that like Mandingo has said we "passionately hate each other" Like I have advocated Nigeria needs to: 1) Get rid of State of Origin/Indigine 2) Get rid of zonal/rotational representation 3) Stop government support of Chiefs/church/mosque 4) Stop govenrment support of Hajj/Pilgrimages and embrace secularism 5) Get rid of Sharia law, Jungle justice and any other forms of either cultural or religious influence on Law These changes if implemented would have positive effects in uniting and building |

Abeem: I have some reservations about your statement concerning people of different ethnic stocks becoming the governor or representatives of the people of another State that is different from their origin. Yes, it is impossible but not for reasons adduced by you. The reasons it will be difficult is because an immigrant, say an Igbo man who is a minority in Lagos State, will not be able to secure the votes on account of his minority in a free and fair election to contest to the State House in Alausa. In the same token, it would be ridiculous and wishful thinking for a Yorubaman to want to occupy the State House in Awka. Of course, if the Igbos have the numerical strength, they can try their luck but the simple fact is that they do not have the votes. See that itself is the problem. You have indirectly attested that the problem is political ethnic separation. Unless we can look at ourselves as more than Igbo/Yoruba/Hausa etc, and look at ourselves as being Nigerian first, your right it will never happen Abeem: In the conflagration in Jos, it would seem that the Hausa/Fulani have multiplied and they are in the majority hence the campaign for their extermination. I will ignore this because it is subjective, only Jos North LGA may/or may not have a majority Hausa/Fulani population. But than again with State of origin abolished this would not matter Abeem: On your recommendations: You cannot get rid of State of Origin unless you want to introduce chaos. Some moneybags will come from nowhere and cause disarray and confusion if you allow just anybody from anywhere to come to a State of their choice to contest elections. A person that is interested in public office must register and live in the State of his choice at least 6 months prior to declaring his intention. This is what obtains in the US. [Hilary Clinton had to move to New York for her to be able to contest election as Senator before her husband left the White House. The Clintons contested elections to the White House from Arkansas]. Herbert Walker Bush, the father of George W. Bush planted his kids all over the country: GW was governor of Texas before contesting election to the White House. Jeb Bush was a one-time governor of Florida. State of Origin cannot be dispensed with completely, it only need to be structured. To be candid with you, I am not sure this is a panacea for the malady and confusion we have at hand. I am well aware that they have State of residence and they have residence restrictions in the United States. But they are no where as pervasive as the State of Origin restrictions in Nigeria. One can not hold certain public offices unless they are indigines of that said particular State. Even if they have been living there generation after generation. That is utterly silly. Your Bush argument actually strengthens my recommendation that State of Origin is corrupted. Lets say Bushes were from Nigeria particularly Niger state and belonged to the Gwari ethnic tribe. There is no way in hell Jeb Bush would ever stand chance of winning an election in Ogun State although he has resided there for many years. I hope you are following, this is the [problem that lies therein with State of Origin. Abeem: Rotational Representation is bad because it stifles competition, breeds political mediocrity [Umaru Yaradua?] and is antithesis to democracy. When you practice rotational representation, some section of the population is disenfranchised so you cannot be said to be practicing democracy. Those who advocated it offered it as an alternative to ensure that the minority are given the opportunity to aspire to political office. Given the Nigerian experience so far, it might seem to be illusory. You have my vote on this.
Getting rid of support for traditional rulers/churches/mosques. I do not understand the role the traditional rulers play in our body politics other than being a pipe drain of our scarce resources - The constitutional conference engineered by Abacha gave them 5% of the budget votes which by any means is way too much. Somebody compared their relevance to the Monarch in the UK and says they are part of our cultural heritage. I agree but the problem is that we have one too many in Nigeria. Secularity is enshrined in the constitution and the support for Churches and Mosques by the leaders is in flagrant disregard of the constitution they swore to uphold. It is good news that Nigerians is fast becoming a litigious society and this cannot continue for too long. I hope I have been able to explain those core recommendation more vividly. Without repealing State of Origin from our policies we as a nation are indirectly supporting ethnocentrism. |

If the man is still on the run don't you think it will be helpful to know his ethnic background which can reveal where he could be hiding at? If the man was Efik and took off he take refuge with some memebers in the Efik community in Kwara or better all the way in Crossrivers / Akwaibom area. Race is always identified in America, but not ethnicity. Being very detailed yet leaving out crucial inflammation such as: 1) Name 2) Age 3) Place of residents etc etc. |

65 Million people smoke? I find this number alarming because maybe 2% of the 65 million is females that leaves roughly 64 million males.
In the 2006 census males numbered roughly 71 million. 64/71*100 is 85%. That means 85% of the male populace in Nigeria smoke and that's saying 1 million females smoke which i think is a gross overestimation |

EzeUche: It would be UN-African to get rid of traditional rulers. This is our culture. Who said democracy is the best form of governance? Who said to get rid of the traditional rulers, what Iam proposing is that they are no longer supported by the government financially and wield no effective power. The reason why I say no financial support is because it is not right in a country rife with poverty the government can purposefully create a super-caste of endowed people. @ Your 2nd Point - Democracy in theory is not the best form of governance, but it practice it is the BEST YES THE BEST. And if you have any other forms of government that trump DEMOCRACY please mention them. ilugunboy: Abeem.

EzeUche: You had me supporting you until you said get rid of support of traditional rulers. This is something I cannot agree with you on. Traditional rulers are part of our culture and we need to support them. Even the Europeans still support their traditional rulers and their countries are doing well. The problem with traditional rulers vis-a-vis European Queens and Kings is surely a thing of numbers. We just have t0o many that are not in congregation with each other. Furthermore do you mean to tell me that the Kings and Queens of Europe still receive support from their governmental arm? BTW my support is financial and power support. The fact that the Sultan of Sokoto wields immense political power flies in the face of democracy. |

Abeem: JosBoy4lif Politics is a game of numbers; and the majority holds the ace. I am assuming from your postings that the Hausa/Fulanis want to exert control politically, and it can only be possible if they are have the numbers (majority) to claim victory in any election. If they are minority, that will not be possible. If today’s Hausa/Fulanis who are resident in the land of the Beroms and Angas are in the majority (?), and they were born there (on account of migration of their ancestors to the area to work in the mine field), you cannot resort to extermination to reduce their majority because you regard them as “Settlers” and you don’t like their religion. They are free born of Plateau State and they have inalienable rights just like any other natives of the State. No government has the right to deny them the right as citizens of the State including the right to executive office. Your argument is puerile, barbaric and uncivilized and flies in the face of logic. Governor Jang will certainly have his day in court. He will be tried like fellow criminals like Milosevic and other war criminals. Please explain the bold part of your statement? Their are LGA's in the far North in which Hausa/Fulani are the minority, but it would be impossible to elect a non-indigine there also. All I am asking for is that we provide equality on both sides. Unlike you I have proffered solutions to the everlasting peace in Nigeria. 1) Get rid of state of Origin 2) Get rid of rotational representation 3) Get rid of government support of Hajj/Pilgrimage 4) Get rid of support of traditional rulers/churches/mosques 5) Embrace secularism and true democracy 6) Get rid of sharia (just as it is non-existent in Turkey on of the most modern Muslim nations) |

This utter nonsense. Can a Birom/Angas man ever win political office in Bauchi? Until we level the playing field it will never happen.
Embrace secularism if religion is the problem. Get rid of Sharia in the north, get rid of State of origin, get rid of government support of hajj/pilgrimages, get rid of rotational representation, get rid of government support of chiefs/emirs/church. Calling ourselves a democracy is a big misnomer.
The fact that Nassarawa/Kaduna have been conquered by Hausa/Fulani's, it will not Happen in Plateau mark my word. The day I see an Igbo man governor of Lagos, or Hausa man house of representatives in Ebonyi State I will know that Nigeria is a democracy Untill than this is utter nonsense |
