Me, i was tired of working in all those #30, 000 per month job, so i needed an upgrade. When the MD asked me what was my last pay in the last place i worked, i told him #35, 000. He said he was going to start paying me #30, 000, after three months he will see how i am gaining experience, then he will increase my salary. I bluntly turned down the job based on the salary. The MD asked me to go home and rethink the offer, that no job seeker turns down his offer. I went home and the next morning, just for courtesy sake, i called him and told him i was not interested. The man was shocked.

If you want to employ people, employ them and tell them what you will pay. If it is okay by them, they resume work.

You can rent a shop, not more than 5k a month or better still buy a new or second- hand container and only pay for the space you'll mount it, which can't be more than 2k a month. Make the container neat by painting it if it's old and design the walls with wallpaper. Then stock it with fast moving consumables like noodles- wholesale/retail, pampers, spaghetti, milk/ beverages- wholesale/ retail,bread, etc. You can venture into just drinks. Get a deep freezer, new or fairly used. Stock up soft drinks of all kinds and juices, water- both sachet/ bottled- wholesale and retail. If you still have leftover cash, you could get a generating set. But if you don't, with time, have it in mind to get one.

Go into plantain farming, it's highly profitable. Hire farmers to do the tilling and planting, as well as any other manual labour, while you do the inspection. At the end of 10-11months, you'll start harvesting the yields for sales.

You have many options. You could go into wholesale of fast moving consumables- what people use every day. You could set up a bakery, a sachet/ bottled water factory, a Nairabet shop etc. I know exactly what to do with such money to yield maximum returns on a regular basis.

I am combining my business with 8-5 job and it has not been easy, my staff have made every effort to frustrate me, that's the greatest problem of business in Nigeria (getting trustworthy personell).
I have had to change staff at different times still they are not sincere, they just want to cheat the system even though I don't delay salary by even a day and I can't quit my job now to stay in the shop permanently.
I even engaged my brother to run the business it became worse as he won't give proper record, telling me how he sold on credit to customers and he started living large.

If you are not the one running the business directly day to day or don't have a strict line of control as a medium range organisation it's not very advisable to venture into it.

The answer depends on your age, your past experience, the number of dependants, how aggressive you are in searching for new jobs and how well you are connected; and very importantly, what your own risk appetite is. Someone with a high risk appetite will go for the high paying job and use the higher savings to establish an alternative source of income for when the contract is terminated. Someone with a lower risk appetite will prefer to stay put where he is and take low pay in exchange for peace of mind knowing that he will be able to bring home the bacon for the next few months at least.

Those are the options and the factors. I know that this is not what you want (you probably want us to tick A or B for you), but nobody knows tomorrow, just like you. And no one knows your situation better than yourself. Sit down and think about it very well and form your own life decisions. This is too important to bring to a vote on NL.
