PoliticsProtest Against Wastage At "nigeria At 50" Anniversary: Hackers Hijack National by JUO(op): 9:25am On Oct 02, 2010
In a three- paragraph petition it left on the site, the group which called itself "9ja cyberactivists", said it would haunt the government functionaries and expose their indiscretions to the world through series of cyber-activism.

"F, k the gov, there is no such thing as security. To the government we need electricity as electricity is supposed to be a basic amenity not a privilege. THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT HELPING MATTERS 50 years of independence and nothing to prove instead they waste billions on failed projects. Bleep the government happy independence day shout out to every patriotic Nigerians," the self-acclaimed activists said.

"They continued, "We shall continue to haunt them by our increased participation, by our insisting that our votes count, by insisting that they give account of their stewardship, by making our voices heard. We shall not quit. We shall expose their many goofs and make them even more scared of their own shadows. We don’t need them to pass the law. We shall assume the law.

"For the people really are the law. For the law is for us and ours to live with. So we shall unseal our lips and undo the gag. We shall refill our quills and adjust our keyboards. We shall also shop for new cameras, for any thing it will take. We shall haunt them and their kind until they, like the cockroach disappear from our faces and out of our hallowed chambers.

CNN's new series i-List takes you to a different country each month. In September, we visit Nigeria focusing on changes shaping the country's economy, culture and social fabric as it celebrates 50 years of independence.

(CNN) -- A 19-year-old Nigerian undergraduate student has signed a two-novel deal with the British publisher Faber, making her its youngest ever woman author.

Chibundu Onuzo, a history student at King's College London, will have her first novel, "The Spider King's Daughter," published next year.

"I wrote the book in my last year at school," Onuzo told CNN. "I've been writing since I was 10, but this was the first novel I finished, so it was very liberating to be able to write 'The End.'"

Onuzo, who moved to England to go to school five years ago, found an agent before she had even finished writing, and sealed the book deal on her first meeting with a publisher

Her editor at Faber, Sarah Savitt, describes Onuzo as a "very talented writer at the beginning of an exciting writing career."

ComputersGoogle Turns 12 by JUO(op): 10:06pm On Sep 27, 2010
Google celebrated its 12 years Monday with a birthday cake doodle created by Wayne Thiebaud, an American artist famous for his paintings of cakes and pastries.

"Our thanks to Wayne Thiebaud for helping us celebrate our 12th bday with a lovely doodle!" Google tweeted.

It's not clear why Google chooses to celebrate its birthday on September 27 instead of other noteworthy days in its history. Google filed for incorporation in California on September 4, 1998. Co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up in a Silicon Valley garage and hired their first employee, fellow Stanford grad Craig Silverstein, on September 21 of that year.

Since then, Google has grown rapidly from a search engine into a tech giant that offers a variety of web-based services, from e-mail to calendars to internet phone calling to TV. An increasing number of smartphones run its popular Android operating system.

Google embarks on its last year as a pre-teen by having recently introduced Google Instant, which offers suggested results to users as they type.

"Birthday Google," a trending topic on Twitter, helped spread the word about the search engine's milestone. Some of the most retweeted posts include:

"Happy 12th birthday to Google. Only one year left to use it, dears! When it becomes a teenager, it won't answer anything."

"Happy 12th Birthday Google!!! Thanks for always having what I was searching for wink"

"Dear Google, I've probably learned more from you than school. So, thank you. Happy Birthday."

So what can we expect next year when Google turns the big 1-3? A bar mitzvah doodle, perhaps.
