Serendip: BREAKING: Ghana President Mahama concedes defeat First it was the Gambian president, now the Ghanaian President. Has Jonathan started something so fundamental?
Ghana’s President John Mahama called opposition Nana Akufo-Addo on Friday to concede defeat and congratulate him on victory in the country’s hotly contested election, a party official said.
“Yes he has conceded defeat,” George Lawson of Mahama’s New Democratic Congress (NDC) party told AFP, after Wednesday’s nail-biting poll, seen as a test for a country generally viewed as a beacon of stability.

Phones › Re: Ncc/telcos- Increase In Data Tariff – Why Not Now, If Not Now? by Just30: 5:33pm On Dec 05, 2016 |
gbollybakare: NCC/TELCOS- INCREASE IN DATA TARIFF – WHY NOT NOW, IF NOT NOW? Blessing Olaifa, Abuja For those who have set their alarm clock on the proposed increase of tariff on data usage by telecommunications operators, especially the big players, namely MTN,GLO, Etisalat and Airtel: a temporary victory has been won. The planned hike has been suspended. However, in the days ahead all stakeholders in the industry would face the grim reality over the sustainability of the status quo. Reverting to the old price regime means a lot to the industry, except of course things have to remain as they are. But experts have agreed that things cannot remain the same in an industry considered as “ dynamic, capital intensive and competitive.” As everyone awaits “the finalization of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria,” it is important to put the issues in their proper perspective once more. The Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, via a letter had directed the big telecommunication companies to increase their data tariff beginning from December 1, 2016. The letter to that effect was signed jointly by the Policy/Competition and Economic Analysis Director, Miss Josephine Amuwo and the Legal Regulatory Services Head, Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye. They signed on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman of the regulatory body, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta. Professor Danbatta had on assumption of office in August 2015 unfolded an 8-point agenda to drive the vision of the NCC. Among others, his agenda was to facilitate broadband penetration, improve quality of service, protect and empower consumers and promote fair competition and inclusive growth. The NCC’s, proposed hike in data tariff was to check the emergence of dominant operators in the data service segment and ultimately enhance broadband penetration into the rural area. It’s a journey that must start now. The document further explain that the measure would provide a level playing ground for all players and protect the industry from massive predatory pricing and safeguard investment, ensure growth, and development and sustainability of the industry. In the said letter, the NCC put the interim price floor for data services at N0.90k/megabyte (MB) for the big operators. The big carriers before this new development have been charging as follows: MTN 45k/MB, Globacom 21k/MB, Etisalat94k/MB and Airtel 52k/MB, putting the average at 53k/MB. The smaller operators and new entrants price per megabyte shows that Smile was charging 84k/MB, Spectranet 58k/MB and Natcom was charging 72k/MB. The average charge of this category was 71k/MB. The small operator were described by NCC as “one that has less than 7.5 percent of market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market”. Reactions to the new price regime were spontaneous from across the country, forcing the NCC to suspend the hike. The regulatory body through its Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo cited a general outcry from Nigerians as reason for the suspension. He said the NCC new position was taken after due consultation with industry stakeholders. Among critical stakeholders that kicked against the hike were members of the National Assembly, Trade Union Congress and the National Association of Telecom Consumers (NATCOM). Nigerians also took to the social media to express their opposition to the hike. While the Senate ordered a halt to the increase and set up a committee to further look into the matter, it however maintained that it would involve all the agencies connected to the matter in its investigation. However, the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, ALTON, expressed disappointment over the decision of the NCC to suspend the proposed price hike. ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo said NCC’s action would be unhelpful to the industry, as data prices had already fallen to unreasonably low and unprofitable levels. He said the public sentiments expressed across the country against the hike were understandable, but that NCC’s intervention as a regulatory body should not be driven by sentiments. Ekanga Attah, a Nigerian who resides in Ghana, in a publication by The Cable reacted thus: “inasmuch as I don’t support the increase in tariffs, but we have to understand that data (and goods in general) is still relatively cheaper than in most other countries. “I bought 6gb on Vodafone Ghana for 90 cedis (N9000) and petrol cost 3.69 cedis (N369) per litre while a bottle of star which is manufactured here in Ghana costs the equivalent of N500 while every other commodity cost twice or thrice as much as in Nigeria while the salary scale is equivalent to that of Nigeria as I learnt due to heavy government taxing which makes me want to run back home. “So I know that the government is making some kind of miracle because bigger economies exposed to our type of shock eg Venezuela and to some extent Saudi Arabia are actually experiencing total upheavals. “And to think they still have to do all this with North East in total ruins while catering for about 2 million IDPs so I would say at this point in time we should shoulder the shocks and ride it out because it could have been so much worse”, he asserted. Again the planned increase in data tariff brought into the front burner the issues of infrastructures development and expansion in the industry and the imperative of quality of service. Would Nigerians prefer poor quality of service such as slow networks to improved quality and fast network service? Would a reasonably justified hike at a period of recession not be an incentive to industry operators who are also facing the challenge of sourcing foreign exchange in the face of depreciating naira value? Industrial operators also face the challenge of equipment shut down and vandalism, yet the base stations are powered with diesel in the face of electricity supply gap. The NCC had rightly argued in a document obtained by The Nation that chief among the reasons for the reintroduction of the price floor was that” some service providers were actually pricing their services below cost, a situation which could spell doom for the industry “. ALTON President had warned about the unsustainability of the old price regime. His loud outcry might be seen as a cry to protect his members. But his warnings that “if the matter is not urgently addressed, it could lead to deterioration in the quality of data services across all networks and attendant poor quality of experience of users,” should not be ignored. A top official of NCC was of the opinion that “it is also in the interest of consumers who have stake their hard-earned income on data purchase to get quality service in return. Or of what benefit is a data purchased at cheaper rate, yet to download a 2hour movie takes as long as a day, leaving consumers frustrated.” Similarly, he said attaching a 10-page Curriculum Vitae in a Cyber Café could be as slow and time consuming, the pains and frustration of not getting it done at all haven purchased a 1.30minutes airtime could force a nightmare. The hike in data tariff, he further argued should be a win-win situation for all stakeholders in the industry. Whether it is now or later, the choice is before all the stakeholders, the official who would not want his name in print added. According to a top industrial player “ for those who do business with data, service quality is imperative and irreplaceable. This could be a different ball game all together for other consumes, however, the NCC is better placed in the long run to chart a course that would be more beneficial to all. Good that NCC had developed a culture of consultation and openness to ensure justice, and fair-play by putting all the cards on the table, its regulatory functions to ensure the growth and development of the industry remain sacrosanct in the days ahead”. My guy, the salaries are not the same |

ObiOmaMu: After several months of sourcing for funds for the survival of their child, the Sam family has lost 13month-old Michelle Sam to Symptomatic Heart Disease.
Michelle was suffering from several heart conditions that lay undetected until she fell sick and was diagnosed of Symptomatic Heart Disease last April.
Later on, the family cried out for help of N6m from the general public for a heart surgery in India. Luckily for them, they met the target and preparation started for the family to fly out the little girl out of the country to begin her treatment.
However, the family was told the chances of Michelle surviving the surgery is very slim. This prompted the father to channel his search to several American hospitals.
But unfortunately, the surgery could cost them from 30 to 40million Naira as against the initial cost of 6million in India.
In preparation for the America surgery, the family have to travel to Ghana to rerun some test before setting off to America for her treatment.
The consultants however, cut short their plans when, they were told, the hospital waiting list is too long for her to have the procedure in time, so her parents put all their efforts into raising money for a private operation to save their daughter’s life at the National Hospital in Abuja.
The mother said she knows other patients have been waiting a year for treatment, but Michelle can’t wait that long.
Mrs Sam said her baby was always in and out of hospital and was prone to a lot of infections.
She also disclosed that the pressure was already tough on the family, who desperately did not want to lose their daughter.
She said: ‘I have collapsed two times in hospital because of the stress, and have had to have counselling to help me deal with things. My husband had to be strong for the family and continue working as I’ve been off work for the last couple of months, looking after Michelle. ‘All I wanted was to help my baby, more than anything else in this world.’ Fast forward to November 15, the surgery was successfully carried out in Hospital for Humanity in Abuja by league of American doctors who were concerned about Michelle health and flew down to Nigeria for the surgery.
The joy of seeing their child recuperating was cut short on November 28, when 13 months old Michelle couldn’t bear the pain any longer and succumbed to death.
However, the left over proceeds from the donations from well meaning Nigerians has been used to set up a foundation in the name of Michelle Sam to help others going through the same predicament overcome it at early stage.
The family had also donated massively for another patient suffering from Heart surgery in Abuja few days after losing their own daughter.
Symptomatic Heart Disease is a birth defect of the heart in which there are holes between chambers of the heart, and the valves that control the flow of blood between these chambers may not be formed correctly.
This means that blood flows where it normally should not be able to, and extra blood flows to the lungs.
May God rest Michelle’s soul.

Why didn't your poor country go else where? Who will sell for you on credit? Which African country can you owe 180m in dollars? Are u insane? They will crumble.
Obviously you are stupid and no nothing about business, so you think you can just turn to anywhere to buy.
Abi your brains didn't tell you that these resources are of different qualities. Besides that, some countries are lenient in nature, even in business like Nigeria because we take a lot of things for granted which is our weakness.
We supplied you products running into hundred millions of dols, you are here saying you can "easily" turn else where.
Or you think you tiny country didn't consider things before staying with our product?
What am I even saying sef? Nothing matter than we are carrying your economy. Take power away from it and let's see if you won't struggle.
Whether you are get else where mattered less, but in the main time you are depending on us to survive and PAYING TOO, even though your outstanding is huge.
For now at least, pay tribute to Nigeria. We be father abeg! I guess you've not heard of our LNG offloading facilities coming up on the eastern front of the power hub and the fact that your country is not reliable so we have to get it from other suppliers . Our western power enclave is already being supplied by so dummy why don't you ask learn to know that the gas market is like that and Ghana can easily pay up when it want to. Nigerian suppliers have been very unreliable and it make sense to hold up on payments. If you want us to go back to the rule books, we can. Anytime you fail to deliver as agreed, you pay up the 10 million dollars fine for damages |

laribari: Bro I feel you even though I do not know ur nationality. However, it's Ghana that is always wanting to compete with Nigeria. Sin we Chased them out the have always hate and rival us...lol
Even during football games, they always want to die on the field against Nigeria yet we are always bigger and beta internationally which is the truth and that is where the issue is. Ghana is big in her own right but Nigeria is bigger and more recognize internationally.
What prize has Ghana paid for Africans? Do u know how many peace keeping we have embarked in west Africa? How many wars we have won in liberia and Congo to help keep peace? So being accused of poluting west African region with LNG is a statement of an illiterate.
We look after our brothers and during elections across the region Nigeria always send observers and delegates because of our influence.
Till date, Ghana is benefiting from Nigeria and even in debt too so time last year. Paying off th debt doesn't mean they still won't pay for the ones being supplied tomorrow. If Nigeria cut off gas today, Ghana will be blacked out. Let's talk with our sense, putting facts on the ground and you will see that they need our support more.
If Nigeria goes down today, many Ecowas nations will be affected.
Oct 16, 2015 – Ghana Faces Electricity Problem As Nigeria Threatens To Stop Gas Supply Over $181 Million Debt
Nigeria will delay a plan to drastically cut gas exports to Ghana from Friday while the two sides hold emergency talks over an outstanding debt of $181 million, the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) said.
Ghana already faces electricity blackouts and the threat to cut supply by 70 percent could have worsened the problems and presented an extra headache for the government.
Ghana’s Minister for Power Kwabena Donkor led a government delegation to Abuja that began talks on Thursday with N-Gaz, a Nigerian consortium, and other stakeholders in a bid to avert the threat, said Harriet Wereko-Brobby, WAPCo spokeswoman.
“By next week we are expecting a way forward,” she told Reuters. “There appears to be a will by all the parties to resolve the issue without the flow of gas being cut off.”
Power supply is the number one thing for any country's Economy and Ghana is depending on us for that. #FACT
So you are reasonable you will know the Ghana govt cannot talk about Nigeria the way many ignorant people do here.
An ignorant fellow calls Nigeria as shitnigerians yet he lives in Nigeria, hasn't gotten frustrated and return home. Another said Nigerians eat from dustbin in what part? Haha!
These are Ghana people on our own platform oo, nairaland a live here because they like to here. Lol
Nigerians are the most extravagant people in Africa and saying they eat from dustbin is fraud! There are poor people everywhere, even beggers in the streets of new york.
Like me now, I do not benefit a dime from Ghana because I don't live there, not on their site or land, my country supports theirs. So when you are benefiting from Nigeria an you are talking trash, you shud be ashamed. Do the honourable thing which is a leave both NL and 9ja sin it's too bad for you.
At least prof wole soyinka (world renowned) did the honorable thing and left the USA. Do the talk!!!
The facts ar there too see. grow up and learn the meaning of benefiting. You're talking as if Nigeria is the only country that produce gas in this region, we can easily turn to other suppliers in the region so you can continue to flare your gas |

swankmee: Romoke!!!
XXII
Romoke heaved a sigh of relief and rested her head on her Ade's chest. They were traveling home to know her parents and also to do their traditional marriage. She wondered how are parents will react when they see her especially with the calibre of people she was coming with. Ade's parents were in another car behind them and following closely was a white coaster bus filled with Ade's friends and well wishers, even Dara followed them. She smiled Dara had come to see her at the hospital few weeks back and Ade nearly pounced on her but she had come in peace. She also apologized to him about her attitude. Ade had wanted them to go to the village and do everything fast because he made mention of them relocating abroad for some time. The Lord has really been good to her she thought as she raised her head to see if they were almost at her village. atleast the evil ones are no more, she suddenly got scared and her throat went dry. Sikemi has still not been caught. She is still lurking around, what if she.... Romoke shook her head, she wouldn't come close to them maybe sikemi is no longer in the country who knows? "please take the left turn...... " she instructed the driver. She suddenly felt nervous her palm was sweaty and her stomach started tieing small knots. Ade hugged her close and pecked her.
" it's going to be alright okay? " she noded, she hoped he would be right when they got there. Cause she has left home for close to 6 years now. Suddenly the car started moving slowly as a result of the bad road, she looked through the window and looked at some few houses built in a well modernized and structured way, she smiled in satisfaction.
"it's here... Stop under that tree " they had gotten to her house. The house looked empty, until she saw a woman slightly bent sit on one of the chairs on the passage.
" babe don't be scared, let's just go in. Let me call mom and dad. " Ade went to call his parents but the other people remained in the car. They walked towards the house. Romoke looked closely at the woman that sat outside, Her eyes widened in recognition it was her mother's rival, the one that always called her " omo iya".
"iya Bisi" the woman stared at her, as if trying to recognize the person. Romoke shook her head and spoke in her dialect to her.
"it's me, it's Romoke, iya Alake's child" she suddenly flew up with her bent back and wrinkled face and went inside, she then returned with a slim old man followed closely by a limping old woman and some other men and women. Iya bisi turned to the limping woman and spoke in the local dialect.
" she said she is Romoke, I don't believe her cause Romoke is dead " The limping woman drew close to Romoke and tried surveying her, Romoke quickly recognized her ad her mother, she had grown so thin and more older.
" maami..... It's me" she said crying, the limping woman touched her chin with shaky hand and drew in Sharp breath, they said she was dead? How could she have come back to me? This is my daughter.
"Romoke!!! " she shouted suddenly and collapsed.

The door creaked open and he entered and quickly shut the door.
"I hope you are prepared? " he rolled up his sleeves and sat at the edge of the bed dangling his carkey.
" yes, let me just change my baby's diaper " she washed her baby who in turn kept on crying. Theophilus checked his wrist watch again, they were running out of time, as they were travelling to Ghana. He looked up as soon as he heard the knock on the door.
" are you expecting anyone? " Martha shook her head and continued with her baby.
" it should be one of the neighbours, help me check please" he stood up and opened the door.
"I know you must be surprised but I traced you here. You think you are smart abi? " the female voice shouted at Theophilus and pushed him into the house shutting the door tightly. Martha turned and almost fainted at what she saw,
" Blessing!! " she was wearing a tight trouser and a big sweatshirt but her baby bump was obvious, she was carrying a gun and was pointing it at Theophilus.
" shut-up! Prostitute! How can you, Theophilus prefer her over me. and to add insult to injury you are now eloping with her to Ghana, tufiakwa! I can't believe this"
"blessing please am sorry, please drop the gun let's talk please. " he begged her with tears in his eyes,
" I am only here to end your life. If I can't have you then no one will. Not even this Prostitute. "
" please, Blessing, please. " Martha kept on begging until she head two deafening shots only then did she realize that it had come from the gun. Be very careful with women in Ghana, the Laws of this country has made them very powerful. If a woman threatens to take you to court, find a way to negotiate ; else it may be the start of a very slow downfall 1 Like |
