Sisikill: Many guys have responded to this thread but non have taken it to the extent to which you have (Something that actually surprises me. I have to say, I have a newfound respect for some nairaland guys because of this thread) It is like you have appointed yourself as Voltron - Defender of whatever. Honestly, if I wasn't brought up to give always give people the benefit of doubt instead of quickly jumping to conclusions, I'D say "Me thinks the man doth protest too much" Oh what am I doing, now is not the time to pretend civility by biting my tongue, I'll just go ahead and say it. . . Me thinks the man (YOU) protest too much and one has to wonder. . . Why? Why is this like a cause for you?
1) Could it be that you know what you really are and you are threatened by this new crop of women who won't allow men to think for them and treat them like trash. . . like nothing?
2) Do you fear we might corrupt other females. . . worse a female close to you? That a day will come when they look you in the face and say. . . enough?
Hmm, not to blow my own trumpet but I believe I have found what is really itching you here.
Well, let me put your mind at ease. . . In as much as I would so love it to be, boldness is not like cold, people can't catch it through contact or by reading words on a computer. Chance are a people who were never bold or who have had the spirit beaten out of them through years of psychological and Physical torture, people who out of fear of negative repercussions or being shut down at every turn, have learnt to keep their opinions to themselves. . . Chances are these people will never change. Okay, I probably shouldn't say never since there are no absolutes and some people. . . Optimists who will tell you they can change through intense psychiatric help but they also say even with that, the chances are still very slim.
In other words, please don't worry about our attitude affecting your home. It won't. Think of this way. . . You have a charm hanging on your door and it prevents the evilness that is our "westernized attitude" from seeping into your home . So let us express ourselves and you just laugh, shake your head and thank goodness you have a firm handle on the women in your life. . . on your own home. No one, absolutely no one will insult you for that.
Thanks. I would be suprised if every man who responded here had the same response as me. They dont have my name I dont have their names - we are not same! To say I have appointed myself as Voltron shows what is really deep down inside of you - you do not want or like anyone to have contrary views and you think they should not speak about what they feel. Why have you also appointed yourself to speak about what you're speaking about? Do you fear as well that I may be able to let other girls see certain things you'll rather they dont see? is it so hard for you to see that you're accusing me of what you and everyone else is doing? As a matter of fact, your kind of attitude can not have a place in my family because because we have a different sense of values. I dont need any charms to prevent anything going into my home. My wife is the way she has always been since we met several years ago and my children are broought up to fear the Lord and to do what they believe is right, which includes not insulting people for having differing views. |

Sisikill: You do not respect our opinions, you do not think they are worth a dime and you insult us for daring to think contrary to what you think, you mock guys who don't subscribe to you heavyhanded attitude (Wouldn't be surprised if you are one of those men who call other guys whipped for showing they care about their women). You do this because deep down, beneath all the Mr. Johnny be Good facade you project, you really are the typical Naija man who thinks women are nothing. Oh you going to deny it, you going to dismiss this as the rantings of a "wounded woman", You will probably tell me to go get married. . . that's if I can find a husband with an attitude like this, that's fine but you know what, it still wouldn't change what you are. Your reasoning is very illogical to think that I dont respect anyone's opinion- what I dont respect is being insulted for having a contrary view. AND then you went on a meaningless rant so nothing to say to all that. Oh yes! I am a typical naija man and I would not want to be anything but that. I take it you'd rather be a typical American woman. . . please stay that way and let me be the typical naija man that I am. Please try and reason again: I am married to a woman. I wont marry her if i thought she is nothing. Those who are nothing know they are nothing! Man or woman |

Sisikill: Mr. JustGood, let's have a time out for a moment and talk man-to-person.
You stated categorically, that Naija men are not what the topic alludes to. Your opinion you said and you are entitled to it, not only are you entitled to it, you also want it respected because it is based on your experience and what you've witnessed, alrighty then. So Pray tell. . . Why you have spent the last 3 days disrespecting other people's opinions? Why you unleashed your wrath on people for stating their opinions, which like yours, is based on their own experience and what they have witnessed. What gives you the audacity to condescend on others for saying what they've seen just because it does not match yours? Last I heard, which was about 5 mins ago, the sun is still the center of the solar system. . . not you. I'm not going to lie, at first, I was a bit perplexed because you couldn't see what you were doing but now I get it and I am actually glad you don't see it because with you here, we need not look futher for examples. . . Your behavior EPITOMIZES what this thread is about. Sisi, I never stated that Naija men are not what the topic alludes to. My point was that the trait was not unique to naija and it is not as common as some of you would have people believe. Either that you have not even followed the thread but have been consistent in following my post (without regard to whatever I may be responding to) or you have just decided to do what a few others have conveniently done here - jump on the back of anyone who is against your opinion and those who support it. Otherwise, you would have been careful to see that I was insulted and I responded in kind. Now dont tell me not to respond in kind! You must assume the sun revolves around you and whatever you believe as well. That is the only explanation I can give for your challenge here |

I wont be adopting kids. I like helping to finance things for other children when I can but I dont think I'd like an official adoption. It will make me feel like a hypocrite pretending to be the father of someone who's not my child.
I wont mind the child being adopted in the sense of living with us and all that but I dont like the idea of the child being legally mine. |

As stupid as you are you think thaty foreigners pleaded and that's why the woman was not stoned. How daft and idiotic can these foreign cows be? The President of Nigeria expressly stated that nobody was going to be stoned at the time yet it pleased these forieign cows to say they are helping Nigerians by pleading.
Who did you plead with? You are just dumb enough for those who use you to advance their objectives. how many people have since been stoned to death in Nigeria.

monatoetje: unique? So you`re saying that majority of Non Nigerian women don`t show respect?
I do think that it is easier to be married to someone who shares similar background/culture, but i totally disagree in terms of " Respect " That term is been used to often by people who do not even know what " respect " means, Sorry, I didn't mean it that way. Of course there are people everywhere who are respectful and are not always trying to lord it over others. You have a point with regards to culture because what one person considers as respect, another may see as stupidity and what one person sees as wild is considered normal by another |

monatoetje: Is it still common that if a husband dies that the family of the husband will claim all the property? Just wondering , because after the husband of our sister died she and her kids were thrown out of the house and left with nothing. That was at least 20 YEARS AGO.
According to my husband things are changing gradually in Nigeria, however he does tell me that sons of strong women and educated family`s usually treat their wives better than does who had moms TS talked about. And that polygamy was common YEARS ago but that it is against the law now, though most of the Islamic part in the North still practise it,
I fully agree, we are all " products " of our upbringing , so it`s not a typichal Nigerian culture. Even were i`m from the men used to be very dominant and women weren`t allowed to work, it was a disgrace to get pregnant before getting married, that was ONLY 50 YEARS AGO, I dont think there's any law with regards to family claiming property, especially if a man dies without a will. It is dependent on the family and different circumstances. All of those things can be contested in law courts. I have a friend whose father died without leaving a will recently; leaving a large estate and businesses. The children are taking control of everything and no family member can dictate to them. No family can lay claim to any such property in law if the man has a wife and children. I dont think polygamy has been legally allowed in Nigeria since I was born. However, many men tended to have concubines outside of their homes because of the way the women were. The women didn't seem to mind it. I know some of my dad's friends who did same but they could not legally marry second wives. Most people dont even do it again these days. saying that however, men all over the world tend to be promiscuous. Not just Nigerian men. Polygamy is allowed in Islam; not in Nigerian law. Exactly! we are products of our upbringing. I remember even when I was in boarding house in secondary school, there were some of us who were really wild and wiser than others. people are different and experiences will always differ. It is wrong for anyone to assume that what they have experienced or heard of is the case all round. |

bani: Basic problem is understanding the thin line between submission and respect. What you need to give a naija man is respect and he gives you the same respect, you become submissive or over submissive, then you get walked over (he farts, tell him he just farted). No one ever runs away from a free slave pampering, you behave like a slave he treats you like one. i would support the theory of the older generations of naija guys being over dorminant, but it was a traditional thing, now the tables are turning, afterall naija guys now even buy roses for women and open doors, bottom line the naija lady has to respect her person and give the man respect and she would get the same respect, its vise versa Yep. That's what makes the Nigerian lady unique and that's why Nigerian men always want to have naija ladies. The only thing some people have in life to show is that they have been outside the country so they want to try and make Nigerians feel that they have learnt things that are better than what nigerians practice; so they will say and do anything just to denigrate what obtains in Nigeria. Any woman who is unable to settle down in life has no business advising other women. How can a failure advise people on how to be successful? |
