What notable weapons did they make back then?
Muskets.

Is it hundreds of years really? I think they started it in the Soviet era.
How about the time of the Tsars?

TayserMahri:
Yea, its also amphbious. Check those waterjets at the rear tongue kiss I think everyone would/should consider this a personnel carrier because it can carry troops anywhere. MRAPs like Ezugwu are very limited to the local areas (what we would call patrols), preferably non-mountainous flat ones - and am not in any way trying to degrade Ezuguwu. Its a great invention from the Nigerian Defense forces and should help minimize casualties. Though I am not sure about the latter. You asked me about my view on why the Nigerian army is struggling with insurgency and I avoided that to avoid turning the thread on its head tongue
Bro, there nothing wrong with giving an unbiased assessment without prejudice.

Kenya, Egypt are also struggling with Insurgencies.

I was only asking for your opinion, if you feel it would be best to avoid the question, that's fine.

The Russians have been developing military equipment for hundreds of years, the K-16 is in a class of it's own.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 12:08pm On Oct 01, 2019
TayserMahri:
Just look at its center of gravity and compare it to the Boomerang K-16 APC below. The Ezugwu MRAP cannot carry troops to all terrain which makes it NOT APC in my opinion, among other factors. APCs take troops just about anywhere. Ezugwu can deflect mines obviously and that makes it a MRAP not an APC. Note the difference in:

MRAP: Mine Resistant Ambush Protected
APC: Armored Personnel Carrier
The K-16 Boomerang is a beast of a vehicle, wow!!

I get your point.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:46am On Oct 01, 2019
TayserMahri:
An APC with a cannon in excess of 20 mm is an IFV. That is according to the CFE standards. I mean APCs can barely support troops directly when faced with heavier artillery. They are not tanks. They cannot withstand direct fire.
OK, thank you for this. I understand better now.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:44am On Oct 01, 2019
TayserMahri:
Ezugwu is a MRAP. No two ways about it.
But it does not have MRAP design. I think it's a APC that can deflect mines. Look at it.

will give a more detailed answer tonight but for now will leave it here:

The Nigerian defence industry has made tremendous progress in only a couple of years. And honestly I feel with enough backing from the government can become a major industry and strong competition for South Africa's defence industry.
I will be waiting for your response.

Thanks for the initial. I think it's a win-win if Nigeria and South-Africa do well.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:29am On Oct 01, 2019
jln115:
MRAP is just a designation used by some manufacturers and not by others.

By definition the Casspir is a MRAP but Denel simply states that its a mine protected APC.
OK.

But let me just ask you a general question. I know you are from South-Africa, can you give an unbiased view of the Nigerian defence industry?

Your own view, and which items do you like in the industry from Nigeria.

It is just a few, no hard feelings. If you don't like any too, it is also fine.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:23am On Oct 01, 2019
jln115:
it's about the role of the vehicle....you can have an APC and an IFV based on the same platform but have different roles.
So you mean if I have a big gun on a vehicle like Proforce MRAP, it is no longer an MRAP?

What about the design?
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:20am On Oct 01, 2019
jln115:
just to clarify, about 90 % of modern day APCs are also MRAPs....... With the exception of a few heavy tracked APCs.
I agree with this in a way, although they are no longer designated as just MRAPs. They have a new name, like that Nigerian Ezugwu vehicle is not really an MRAP.

The vehicle Australia recently bought also can protect against mines, but it is not an MRAP.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:16am On Oct 01, 2019
jln115:
Then they are IFVs not APCs
I don't understand?
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:16am On Oct 01, 2019
jln115:
Their is still a clear difference between a frigate and a destroyer though.... Except one is becoming obsolete

But a MRAP will always be an APC.
Only small countries buy Frigates alone. Big countries with Oceangoing fleets still build destroyers.

USA, Russia, China, Japan , Britain etc.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 11:14am On Oct 01, 2019
TayserMahri:
No. IFVs provide direct fire support, ie. they stick to the battleground, while APCs do not. Im not confusing the two.
What about APCs that are armed with 20mm cannons, they also stick to the battlefield.

APCs with big guns like a heavy machine guns also stick to the battlefield.

I don't quite understand why you think an APC cannot provide support for infantry soldiers.

That's the side view of the EZUGWU MRAP by the Nigerian army. It looks better from the side then the front.
It's a very modern looking vehicle, I think it looks good too.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 7:58am On Sep 29, 2019
TayserMahri:
Combine this with the Russian anthem and there's absolutely no battle you're losing.
It is very impressive. That's a proper military.

I don't usually see NATO countries conduct exercises in this scale, and to think more than 100k troops participated in the other Russian exercise last year is mind boggling.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by kabe1: 7:56am On Sep 29, 2019
TayserMahri:
More of a MRAP than APC.
Please what is the difference between an MRAP and an APC.

The Nigerian army looks very well equipped, but why are we struggling with this Insurgency?

I know it's not really easy, but soldiers always complain a lot. Why is that?

Your ignorance is painful to read.

the Chad deal is but a drop in the ocean, wouldn't have made the slightest of difference to Denels financial position.

Denel has contracts with the middle East worth billions yet its still in a mess.
You irredeemable clown.

The Chad deal is one of the reasons Denel staff keep getting owed salaries. One month in and one month out.

Good news for Nigeria.

so why are your waters still some of the most pirate infested and dangerous while ours are some of the safest, I mean certainly if our Navy isn't developed to confront threats and Nigerias is then your waters should be much safer than ours?
Piracy Incidents Down Off Nigeria

The decrease is due, among other things, to a faster effort by the Nigerian fleet, says Danish Shipping. “We are very pleased that the number of incidents is on the decline. The development emphasizes how important it is that countries in the exposed regions start to live up to their responsibility as to safeguarding their waters, and for the Gulf of Guinea, we have especially seen Nigeria making an important effort,” says Asbjørn Overgaard Christiansen, Acting Director of Security, Environment and Maritime Research at Danish Shipping.

Like i said: The Nigerian navy has developed the assets it needs to confront the threats it faces.

We cannot say the same for South-Africa.

Ironic since the NN has already lost its only frigate capability years ago.....
The Nigerian navy is well positioned to deal with the threats it's currently facing. A frigate is not a pressing requirement for the navy.

Unlike the South-African navy. grin grin
