Israel launches fresh airstrike on Gaza Strip Tue Apr 2, 2013 10:46PM GMT Israeli warplanes have launched an airstrike on the besieged Gaza Strip, the first such attacks since a truce ended an eight-day Israeli onslaught on the coastal enclave in November. Hamas Interior Ministry said in a statement that Israeli jets bombarded an open area in northern Gaza late on Tuesday, Reuters reported. "Occupation planes bombarded an open area in northern Gaza, there were no wounded," said the statement. The Israeli military officials have confirmed that there had been a strike in Gaza, but gave no further details. Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured in the Israeli attacks on Gaza from November 14 to 21. The violence ended after the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire. The Human Rights Watch condemned the Israeli Army for committing clear violations of the laws of war during the eight-day attacks. Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty. The Israeli regime denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and the right to decent living, work, health, and education. http://www.presstv.com/detail/2013/04/02/296233/israel-launches-fresh-airstrike-on-gaza/ To all d gullible Isreal asslicker here on NL, who bliv isreal is d chosen nation and tries so hard to attach themselves to the jew nation, here is an eye-opener to one of d several brutalities and oppresion by your so-called fatherland. I only hope situations in d world now won't escalate into an all-out war that will consume all countries of d world with tensions erupting from various quarters. |
Tinubu is powerful because he fully understands d game he finds himself. his party, acn won elctive posts almost across d country even in d southeast wher chris ngige won a senatorial seat under acn. He also fancies perfomance in office nd takes ds important unlike most politicians who re only after lootin d treasury. This southwest is a sophisticated geopolitical zone whr ppl donot only vote on sentiment but believ in performance while u re in government. Tinubu understands this fully well and plays it nicely. His achievements in Lagos av spoken for him. Also he has been able to install a credible succesor and av craven for all southwest governors under can to deliver effectively to their people. All these av contributed towards increasin his stake in d southwestern political arena. Simply put, tinubu is d leadin opposition leader in d country. |
Great debates here frm ppl with d intellectual capability. But I strongly concur wt d points raised by gbawe dat comparative advantage is d way forward for nigeria and indeed africa in ds competitve world. Africa posses abt 45percent of d world's natural resources. This means dat we can stil achieve a lot in d agric sector goin by d edge we av wen it cums to favorable climate and rich cultivable land. All that need to b done is a favorable and encoragin govt policies dat wil attract an exodus of our youths whose majority re currently unproductive. Also infastructure lik transport, power etc needs to b provided for a more efficient productivity. I believ dat with d necessary logistics in place, africa and indeed nigeria will surely get there. |

Boko Haram is Ignorant, Says Soyinka 26 Mar 2013 Font Size: a / A Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka Ernest Chinwo Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has said members of Boko Haram, in their opposition to western education, are ignorant of the teachings of Islam. Soyinka, who spoke Monday in Port Harcourt as chairman of the opening ceremony of the Third Rivers State Education Summit, noted that some of the world’s greatest philosophers and mathematicians were Muslims. He expressed regret that a group of people felt they were educated to say western education was wrong. He said: “Those who call themselves Boko Haram, for instance, yes they claim to be educated; educated to mean books, and they are not sufficient, even about their religion to know that some of the greatest philosophers came from that religion, some of the greatest mathematicians were the pioneers Muslims, Islamic scholars. “So these killers roaming around saying that they hate western education, they are uneducated; but they think they are educated. They have been taught on a monorail – one track lane. But they need to be re-educated even about their own history, their own culture.” Soyinka also decried the sorry state of education in the country, noting that people now equate cultism with fraternities. He said the situation had become so bad that a vice-chancellor of a university had to take extra measures to restore sanity to his institution. “The rot in tertiary institutions is trickling down to other levels of education in the country,” he said, adding that urgent steps needed to be taken by government at all levels to clean up the rot in the system. He called for a multi-pronged approach to education in the country, adding that close supervision was necessary to achieve results. “When people talk about the multi-pronged approach, I agree and I approve of the attempts being made to create the so-called Almajiri schools which should be supervised – the content and the method of teaching should be supervised,” he said. He called on the Federal Government to take issues of security seriously to provide the necessary atmosphere for learning. “At the same time, however, to impact knowledge, you have to have the heads where they belong for the knowledge to be imparted. So at the same time, talk about amnesty as much as you want, but you have to catch those who are trying to take the heads off where we are supposed to impact knowledge,” he advised. He called for the re-education of members of Boko Haram who are caught, but added that those who are recalcitrant should be punished according to the law. Soyinka said: “When you catch them, you have to re-educate them very seriously. If they refuse to be re-educated, you must punish them. I am not sentimental at all. “The society must first of all protect itself and the citizens must be taught how to protect their society, how to ensure their own survival. So let’s not be sentimental at all about this. “I want to see the head into which I can put in the material (knowledge). I want to be sure that teachers are not being slaughtered for following their vocation. Those teachers must be protected. The universities must be reopened, the schools must be reopened.” Soyinka commended the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, for his achievements in education, but urged him not to feel despondent because of some of the challenges inflicted by teachers and other managers who try to subvert the system. In his speech, Amaechi, said it was necessary to look beyond the façade of the beautiful buildings and facilities put in place by his administration to boost education. He expressed concern that despite the directive by his government that no pupil in the state’s primary schools should pay fees, some teachers were still forcing them to pay fees. He also noted that teachers were not making use of the ICT and other facilities in the schools, adding that the state House of Assembly was already working on a bill on quality assurance in the school system. In her welcome address, the state Commissioner for Education, Ms. Alice Lawrence-Nemi, said the summit was the third in the series in five years, and was expected to come up with recommendations which “when properly implemented will give Rivers’ children access to education that will enable them fit into and adequately face the challenges of the 21st century.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/boko-haram-is-ignorant-says-soyinka/143217/ Prof wole soyinka has said it all. Improve education standards of d north and d menace caused by these almajiris wil b drastically reduced. Indeed! Ignorance is bliss |
Nigerian, Dr. Tinuade Okoro, Emerges Best Graduating Medical Student in Ghana 17 Mar 2013 Font Size: a / A By Olaolu Olusina A Nigerian, Tinuade Okoro, has emerged the best graduating medical student in Ghana, in the process, scooping 16 prizes at the University of Ghana, Legon. The prizes won by Tinuade included the Ghana Medical Association prize for the Best Overall Student in the MB Ch. B Final Part II examination; prize for All Round Best Student, sponsored by Ghana Health Service, and the Society of Obstetrics and Gyneacologists of Ghana prize for Best Student in Gyneacology as well as the R.K Obeng prize for Best Student in Clinical Pharmacology. Others prizes won by Dr. Okoro are the Nana Preko Ampem II prize for Best Student in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Archeampong prize in Surgery and Harry Sawyerr prize in Medicine and Therapeutics among others. In a letter dated February 28, 2013 and signed by Mrs. Selie Ama Baiden of the office of the Ag. Executive Secretary, Office of the Dean, College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana Medical School, the school invited her to its congregation/swearing-in-ceremony for newly-qualified Medical Doctors scheduled for March 23 at the Athletic Oval, University of Ghana, Legon. Born Tinuade Olukemi Okoro and brought up in Jos, Plateau State, Tinuade’s parents are from Ondo State. Her father, Mr. Benjamin Oyedele Okoro, is a retired civil servant while her mother, Mrs. Omotayo Yetunde Okoro, was a nurse until her untimely death in 2004- a woman she described as being of “exceptional humility, simplicity and grace”. Tinuade began her primary school education in 1993 in Plateau Private School, Jos, continued in Rantya Model School, Jos and ended in Camp David Nursery and Primary School, Lagos. She attended Federal Government Girls’ College, Akure from 1998-2004, following which she completed some computer training while awaiting admission into the university. She resumed at the University of Legon, Ghana in 2006 and was admitted into the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), Accra in 2007. Attributing her feat to God’s mercy and hard work, she said: “Structured learning also helped. You cannot just keep reading without a map, hoping to one day finish the material, you never will if you do not plan to! “I was told when I began medical school that one should be grateful for a pass. While that may be true and I certainly got a number of passes, I decided that was not enough for me. I think one owes it to oneself and one’s Creator to aim for the highest available honor. That credits and distinctions exist means they are attainable. “I know that life can be so difficult it is easy to slip into survival mode but there are enough potential limiting factors in this life without one adding a vote of no confidence in one’s own self to the list! A person has to be his own greatest cheer leader. “How I worked hard for 16 prizes? Again, I know this sounds clichéd, or even falsely modest, but it is the truth. God helped me, plain and simple. I know there are really gifted people who probably could have done it ‘on their own’, but I know where my strength comes from. He blessed me with a good mind, memory, and tongue. He helped me grasp information easily, retain and apply the knowledge accurately even after long periods. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nigerian-dr-tinuade-okoro-emerges-best-graduating-medical-student-in-ghana/142387/ Now abit of fresh air...kudos to d young doctor for been a gud ambassador of nigeria in faraway ghana |

Lagos Laments FG’s Failed Promises 30 Jan 2013 Font Size: a / A Governor Babatunde Fashola Gboyega Akinsanmi Lagos State Govrnment has lamented Federal Government’s failure to intervene in the prevailing conditions of beach encroachment, coastal erosion and environmental challenges which often threatens lives and property in the state. The state’s Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, Tuesday expressed the disappointment while addressing a news conference in Alausa, on the ministry’s programmes and work plan ahead of the 2013 rainy season. Bello, who addressed the conference alongside the Special Adviser on Environment to the governor, Dr. Taofeek Folami, and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Muyideen Akinsanya, also explained the constraints on the part of the state government to restore and regenerate Apapa and its axis could not really take off. He acknowledged some promises made by the Federal Government “to help address the challenge of beach encroachment which ate up Alpha Beach in 2011 during which President Goodluck Jonathan visited the area”. He also mentioned the case of Kuramo Beach, which suffered a worse case of coastal erosion in 2012, explaining that the state government repeatedly called on the Federal Government for intervention without avail. He further blamed the Federal Government for the relapse of Apapa’s traffic gridlocks and environmental nuisances due to what he ascribed to as its failure to make good its promises to help restore the area. He, therefore, explained that most of the challenges confronting the state government along its coastal lines as well as the Apapa Central Business District (CBD) “are the statutory responsibilities of the Federal Government.” In 2012, for instance, the commissioner said, the state government asked the Federal Government for intervention when there was a grave case of beach encroachment in Kuramo Beach, though there was no specific response. He said until other states of the federation “suffered acute cases of flooding, the Federal Government did not release the sum of N400 million to the state government. This is wrong. It appears the Federal Government is not ready to do anything for Lagos State due to a number of promises it made at different times without redemption.” He explained that the Federal Government did not respond “to the crisis of coastal encroachment in Kuramo specifically. Rather, it responded while giving other states that suffered massive flooding some money. This is wrong because beach encroachment is different from flooding and erosion.” He explained the sudden refusal of the Federal Government “to honour its promise after the state government cleared Apapa in 2012. Apapa is gradually relapsing into its old state because the Federal Government after we worked together to clear the area and the Federal Government promised to cooperate with us. “There are huge problems in Apapa. We need to deal with the issue of oil tank farms. We need to address of ports’ poor management, which is responsible for traffic gridlocks. The Federal Government promised to contribute money. But till date, nothing has been done and they have not contributed a dime. “We have not received a dime from the centre. But they sent representatives last week to meet with the state government and have agreed to make some contributions. In some parts, the Federal Government promised to contribute 70 per cent. In other parts, they promised to contribute 35 per cent. Once they are ready, we would cooperate.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lagos-laments-fg-s-failed-promises/137834/ Evryone knows pdp govt is all about promises nd no actions to back it up. This is a criitical issue dat threatens lives of thousands of nigerians....but as we all know, it is only wen problem arises den we start finding solutions. Third Mainland Bridge to Get Street Lights in April 25 Jan 2013 Font Size: a / A Third Mainland Bridge The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has said that installation of street lights on the Third Mainland Bridge will be completed in April. Making this known when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an engineer with the agency, Mr, Oladimeji Abayomi, said in Lagos Wednesda that contractors handling the project were currently tracing the faults and clearing them. He said that more lights would come on every week until all the faults were cleared. “The contractor is on ground, the work is ongoing. They are tracing faults underground and laying cables. “When you are tracing a problem, you may meet a bigger one that needs to be solved. Anytime from March or April this year, the work would be completed,’’ he said. He decried the power outages and outrageous billing system, which he said, was the bane affecting the lights on the bridge. Abayomi explained that the agency relied more on generators to power the lights from five different substations in the state. He said the agency had to continue to supplement Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) with generators pending when its plan to change to solar energy materialised. Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, had in October 2012, directed a team of engineers to tackle electrical problem on one of the expansion http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/third-mainland-bridge-to-get-street-lights-in-april/137421/ This is gud one frm d gej govt... NBS Denies Rating Sokoto Poorest State 25 Jan 2013 Font Size: a / A Dr. Yemi Kale Tobi Soniyi
in The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has denied the report that it rated Sokoto State as the poorest state in Nigeria in the 2012 National Poverty Index. The Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, stated this in a response letter signed on his behalf by Mrs. Yvonne Odu-Thomas, and addressed to the chambers of Dr. Alex Iziyon (SAN), the lawyer to the Sokoto State Government. In the letter entitled: ‘RE: Bogus, Fictitious, Baseless and Inciting Publication on Sokoto State as the Poorest State in Nigeria’, the Bureau dissociated itself from the report credited to it. “First to be noted is that, the Bureau conducts its National Poverty Index every five to six years. The last survey conducted was in the year 2009/10, whilst the previous one was conducted in the year 2003/04. It can be said therefore, based on this explanation given by the Bureau that the publications on poverty for 2012, so mentioned are out of context and false. “It is important to mention here that the Bureau uses and will continue to use global best practice in conducting all of its Surveys and that no such information as alleged by your client is on the Bureau’s website”, Mrs. Odu-Thomas stated. In another letter to the Special Adviser, Sokoto State Poverty Reduction Agency, the NBS said: “Its next assessment is scheduled for 2014/15. There has been no new survey or analysis on poverty by NBS since 2009/10, therefore all reports claiming NBS released poverty results for 2012 are false. “Accordingly, any statistics recorded without the authority of the NBS, as is the case with the one in question, is not to be regarded as official. The NBS surveys which cut across states are done in collaboration with state statistical offices and before any such survey is conducted you would be informed via the Governor’s Forum,” it added. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nbs-denies-rating-sokoto-poorest-state/137417/ Now we don't know who to believe again, whether the nbs or d propaganda-filled nigerian newspapers. I think d newspapers shld give a more sincere and accurate of events nd news they report rather than spilling out false reports in order to sell thr papers. |
Chime Discharged from Wellington Hospital 25 Jan 2013 Font Size: a / A Governor Sullivan Chime Agha Ibiam Indication emerged Wednesday that Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State may have been discharged from Wellington Hospital at St. John’s Wood, North West London, where he had an endoscopy operation. This is coming barely four days after Chime’s colleagues-Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Gabriel Suswam (Benue) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) paid him a visit in London. Endoscopy, according to experts, is a situation where a health care provider may use endoscopy to investigate symptoms in the digestive system including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing and gastrointestinal bleeding. A reliable source stated that the situation is also used to confirm cancers of the digestive system, if it was noted. However, the source could not ascertain how long the operation lasted on Wednesday at Wellington, but it was reliably gathered that the governor came in to the Ward on Wednesday for a procedure and was later discharged. “He attended the Day Unity at the hospital and has been discharged; therefore he is no longer under the care of the endoscopy Unit any longer,” the source said. The governor had been on admission at the hospital since last quarter of last year when he was first admitted till late November when he was discharged. According to the source, Wednesday’s visit was to ensure he has completed his routine check with specialists at the hospital. The governor on Monday attended 9, Harley Street Clinic, where he met with Professor Paul O’Flynn, a specialist on ear, nose and throat (ENT). It was also gathered that before Wednesday’s operation at the Endoscopy Unit, Chime had visited the hospital once in the last two weeks and had four appointments with O’Flynn since the beginning of this month. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/chime-discharged-from-wellington-hospital/137403/ Now I think ds is a gudd one for d governor nd people of enugu state. I wish d governor fullest and quick recovery. |

Henry Okah Sentenced To Life Imprisonment In South Africa A South African court has found Henry Okah guilty of terrorism charges leveled against him by the federal government of Nigeria. The sentence includes a life jail term. The sentence will be carried out on January 31st or February 1st. The judge however gave Okah room for mitigation. Okah is accused of masterminding two car bombings in Abuja on October 1 in 2010. 12 people were killed and 36 were injured. He was arrested in Johannesburg the following day. Okah was allegedly the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), that claimed responsibility for the blasts. He was charged with engaging in terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist activity, and delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, who was first to give evidence at the opening of Okah’s trial said Okah was a “key figure in the Niger Delta struggle and the militants had a lot of respect for him”. Okah denied involvement in the attacks and also denies being the leader of the group. http://www.360nobs.com/2013/01/henry-okah-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment-in-south-africa/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook |
