I know that feeling of meeting someone who understands your language in a strange land, but some spouses are insecure and irrational. I expected you to distance yourself from the woman and all the side talks, instead you are planning to sue the husband. Didn't they give you those security talks they give corps members?

Do not wait till your farm produce appears unmarketable before your start asking Qs. be conventional in your approach to farm activities by ascertaining your farm soil fertility before putting it to use. Consult kenfarm for a detailed soil fertility test as a per planting operation for next season

The picture below is a healthy plantain plantation belonging to our esteem client. The suckers where showing symptoms of lack of specific nutrient and stunted growth due to poor management. Kenfarm was contracted to salvage the situation 4months ago.

The first thing we did was to sample the soil, conduct a soil fertility test after which we discovered the lacking nutrient and we fix it. We quickly collect records of all farm activities in the last 2months before we took over and realised things has not been done in the proper way.

After our intervention precesses the farm is taking a good shape now like you can see in the picture below.

Great job ! But if l were you. As will plant cassava together with the plantain and harvest them within six month to a year depending on the species of cassava.

I have being following your method very good and product. I love to have something like this. Kudos.
Thank you Bro, it gladden our heart to know you are following up. We appreciate your suggestion of inter cropping but may I quickly inform you that it not agronomically right to intercrop two crop of the same growth cycle. If you do, the two crop will be competing for nutrient from planting to fruiting. Definitely the two crops will have poor yield as a result of the competition.

However, it best you intercrop two crops which are of varying growth cycle. One ready for harvest in 2-3 months while the other ready for harvest in 9-12 months

hope this help
cheers!!! and keep following the thread

Greetings to my silent and esteem follower of this educative thread. Just to update you of our experimental farm activities.

I visited the farm today to review how effective the herbicide applied was. Check the picture below to review the effect of the herbicide used yourselves.

Now let me educate us shortly on herbicide application. If you intend killing the weed in your farm from the leaves to the root, I advise you apply systemic herbicide like Glyphosate or Forcuron. The effect of these systemic herbicide take 7-8days to manifest on the weed. Also, the effect last longer than Contact herbicide.

It also important to note that weed are resilient in the since that when their seed fall on the soil, they sprout very fast. So while killing the existing weed, it important you kill the seed with Attrasine .

In doing this, you will prolong the time it will take the weed to emerge

In preparation for another planting season, it will be great if we intending farmers do things right by checking the fertility of that farm u intend putting to use.

Gone are the days we just bury seed, cover with soil and go home to sleep expecting bountiful harvest. Presently, the soil that have even be left for 39years to fallow is been discovered to lack vital nutrients due to natural environmental forces like

1. Erosion
2. global warming
3. Deforestation
4. depletion of the ozone layer
just to mention a few

All these above mention forces are beyond the control of man and as such the only way we farmers can cope with them is to test our soil to know how much they have been affected so that we can ameliorate the soil before farming.
do not be deceived with the saying that "God has blessed our soil" and as such follow the ignorant internet farmers who will say testing your soil fertility is of no use.....

thanks a lot and God bless.
Please in plantain plantation is irrigation of very important.
Can someone do without irrigation and do well in business.
and also explain more about mulching and how it is done.
Am responding to your Qs here because am sure the Qs & ANS are beneficial to my silent followers as well.

Irrigation it not very important to plantain plantation. As a matter of fact I have been cultivating without irrigation and my crops are doing great.
If you can not afford irrigation, then it best you start your planting after the 10th rainfall which mark the beginning the rainy season/planting season. The natural rain do your crop even better advantages than irrigation.
However, if you are not cultivating with irrigation, it means you will be planting your crop at the start of the rain along with plenty other farmers like you and therefore harvest when plenty other farmers like you are harvesting.

This means your crop will be available for sell when the crop is in great supply in the market and few demand. meaning if you do not do your home work well you may end up selling your crop at very low price due to the fact that your crop has flooded the market.

Nevertheless, if you use irrigation, you can cultivate any time of the year. You can cultivate your plantain with irrigation in December when all other farmers has stop cultivation and harvest in September/November the following year which is the period when the plantain is in short supply to the market.

in such case you are likely going to make Triple profit. I guess u can see the benefit of irrigation and irrelevance of it

Mulching: it an agricultural practise that is use to control weed, increase moisture of the soil and reduce evaporation/ transpiration

it simply done by using either leaf or mulching Capet to cover the farm soil after weeding. by so doing, the weed will be denied of photosynthesis and sunlight so that the growth will be retarded.

when the weed stop competing with your crop, u know what that means. And when moisture is sustained in your soil, u know what that means. And when transpiration is reduced u know what that means......all to your advantage

I hope this helps

cheers!!

Greetings my esteem followers of this thread.....above is how bushy our experimental farm is and as such I decided to hire workers to hand weed and heap sand round the sucker root.

Below is the look of the farm after the hand weeding. This weeding is the 3rd weeding since May, 2017 we planted the suckers. The cost of weeding varies with location, how bushy the farm is and your bargaining power.

REASON WHY I CHOOSE HAND WEEDING AND HEAPING OF SAND

1. when you hand weed (especially when done properly), you have the opportunity to root out all the root of the weed which reduce the time of subsequent emergence.

2. the uprooted weed when left on the farm land decay gradually to form compost manure and also form mulching

3. when you heap sand round the sucker root, you are securing the root of the sucker from erosion exposure.

4. when you heap sand around the sucker you are increasing the tendency of more suckers emerging around the parent sucker.

5. when you heap sand round the sucker the root of the sucker will be firm to withstand the destructive wind that a company the first rain in the new planting season.

Hence, we advice all whose sucker is above 4months to endeavour to heap sand round the sucker.

check the picture below for the farm new look (3weeks after weeding). we plan applying herbicide which contain ingredient capable of killing the weed seed and killing the weed to the root in preparation for the dry season.

when this is done we would post new farm picture.

kenfarm.........eradicating food shortage....

nzedon2:
please do harsh sunlight affect plantain plantation, I mean what is the effect of much sunlight on plantain plantation
Hash sunlight does have indirect effect on plantain. This is because it increase evaporation of water in the soil leaving the soil dry and less moist. Although the good news is plantain stem and leaf store as much water that could sustain it for a reasonable period of time. But where there is an unusual prolongation of hash sunlight, the plantain sucker may be affected badly.

If you notice your farm area has a hash sunlight it is advisable you practise mulching which will prevent the hash sunlight from heating the soil thereby reducing or preventing evaporation.
cheers!

Thanks alot for your response.
but am planning to distroy the old suckers and replace with an improve sucker but that should be next planting season, so please can u give me the step by step procedure on how to improve my soil nutrients and water holding ability before the next planting season thanks.
If you want to clear of the sucker there to replace next planting season, it OK. That means the right time to clear off the unwanted sucker is now that the soil is still wet. After clearing with Bulldozer, plough the soil and add treated poultry manure. The poultry manure will increase microbial activities during the dry season thereby increasing the organic matter/content of the soil leading to a well moist soil.

On the other hand, if i want to be professional in my advice, I will say after clearing off the unwanted sucker, run a soil fertility test on the soil. The test we do will indicate what treatment to give to the soil. The test we do will indicate your soil :
1. Soil PH
2. soil textural class
3. Soil moisture level
4. Particle size analysis
5. soil level of micro nutrients
6. Soil level of macro nutrients
If all these is known then will can deduce why the former sucker did badly. If you do not try to ascertain the fertility of the soil, it may erroneous to just start treating the soil.

A good viable and hybrid sucker is not only the condition that ensure increased yield, but also condition of the soil cum environmental factors.

We hope this help...otherwise feel free to ask further Qs .
cheers!!
