In many Nigerian languages we call our siblings "child(ren) of my mother" and not "child(ren) of my father" despite the fact that our custom says children belong to the father.
This might mean they were sure of the mother of the children but were in doubt of who the father was.

Igala of kogi state says "óma-iye mi"
Yoruba of south west says "omo-iya mi"
Igbo of south east says "nwa-une'm"
All the above literally mean "child of my mother"
