I drive a 1998 Volvo S40, manual and sealed engine. Lately, I noticed that my car emits black smoke when you start the engine, but this clears off after a while; this want happening before. Again, the engine shorts oil after a little period of servicing; please what could be the reason for all these?

I’m not a Volvo mechanic, but I know black smoke indicates engine running rich. You may wish to check your AF sensor or ‘Lambda sond’ as Volvo calls it. As for oil shortage, check if there is any leak from the engine oil seal. If none, then the pistons rings and valve stem seals might be the culprits.

Thanks boss. I checked the TCM and noticed that two pins where bent. I straightened and refined it. Now my gear is flying as usual and I got my Rx350 back and sound. Gracias boss. Now, I want to flush out the gear oil and replace with Toyota WS. Any precaution or advice from the house?

What oil was used previously?
Ensure transmission is cold and someone who knows how to service these transmissions are hired for the job. Also, ensure genuine Toyota WS oil is used as there are lot of fakes in the market.

Check if the TCM harness is plugged in properly. If it is, have your technician unplug it and check if it’s pins are rusted or bent. Then plug it properly and securely. Clear codes and test drive again. If it doesn’t work, replace that TCM module.

Please I need urgent help. I noticed oil spillage under my Rx350. On consulting my mechanic, he said it was from the gear, that he needs to drop the engine to fix the oil seal. To cut the long story short, he dropped the engine and fixed a new oil seal, but right now, my car cannot move as suppose. It keeps revving without moving and it jerks when switching from P to D and R..Mehn! I am so unhappy right now. It's Rx350 2011 model. Please I am sad and confused right now.

Get that car scanned and let me know the code, just bear in mind, that transmission may have been contaminated.

Check the upstream and downstream O2 sensors on the exhaust pipe. If they’re connected properly, if they’re, replace with exact type.

The engine of a 2005 Toyota Corolla LE does switch off especially when there is a need to decelerate like approaching a house gate or waiting temporarily at road junction for traffic to clear before continuing with the journey. There is no problem while on average to high speed. Fuel pump was changed in April,2022. Error codes: P0171- System is too lean(bank 1) and P0304- Cylinder 4 misfiring detected.

What could be the problem and possible solution?
One auto-mechanic workshop proposed a new set of fuel pump with the casing/housing, not just the small tube fuel pump. Will this solve the problem? thanks

Check air Intake system from the air cleaner box, air intake hose, and vacuum pipes if there’s any break or air leaks, then check the Throttle Body. I believe that P0171 may be the cause of the stalling.
