Certitude: As in what did they achieve during their era. Their achievements have nothing to do with my comment but i remember Wilson Oruma had it so good in French league, same thing James Obiorah with Anderlecht and later locomotives moscow and Emma Ebiede in Dutch league,Duke Udi too in Switzerland, and Doodo Avaa in Turkish league. We cannot have these types of players in this era and be searching for Mikel's deputy, that's my point. Wilson Oruma was able to deputise for Okocha during Atlanta 96 and France 98 and James Obiorah at 2002 WC.I remember Duke Udi and Emma Ebiede step in for Okocha during Atlanta qualifying series and they did not disappoint. |

goldfish80: There was this song by Nelly Uchendu played on radio usually before any crucial match in the 80's. The song goes something like... Every match Every match Eagles the great, Eagles of Nigeria. If they play football in Ghana, Eagles must win.......nothing like the eagles in Africa.
I cant recall the name of the song. I have always wanted to download it but I'm hitting dead ends. cc Kog45, Icon4s I can't recall the name of the song but likely icon4s and enomakos gonna remember the song. |

Icon4s: The Chile 87 team held so much promises. With a good number of quality players but also with a good number of inexperienced players from the previous China 85 crop. China 85 was an U16 tournament, Chile 87 was an U21 tourney. A good number of those boys were too young. Though the bigger boys in the team tried but that was not enough to spare them from the bashings from Brazil and Italy.(Having Brazil and Italy in your group at any level that time na die be that)
Those who have been long enough on this thread know I keep making reference to the mistakes we made with that team. Part of what affected the Manu U20 and what affected Amuneke's U20 as well. A lot of the players were too young and inexperienced to compete at that level. Some of them had to repeat the U21 in 1989 and then they played better and reaching the final. the Saudi 89 team was a combo of the China 85, Canada 87 and quality players from the local league. Perfectly matched. Mind you by 1987, the cadet WC became U17. True talk i remember Adeolu Adekola was at Unilag then may be 200 level or so,also Andrew Uwe of 85 U20 and Nosa Osadolor at university of Ife. Honestly good old days and just damn surprised we cannot find deputy for Mikel, remember Okocha era,we have Wilson Oruma,James Obiorah,Emma Ebiede,Duke UDI,Dodoo Avaa,Ochucko Otis ready to play |

Icon4s: Yeah that game. All our 4 goals were long range shots. Go check out that Mutiu Adepoju's pass to Nduka Ugbade for the equaliser. Highlights of that game is on YouTube. I also posted it here recently.
I wonder why Nigerian teams generally hardly score such goals again. Recall also Victor Igbinoba's goal against Germany in the China 85 final. A Classic! NTA were just showing it prio to 9 o'clock news everyday for about half a decade. Victor Igbinoba stole the show with that goal,i remember during Kwara 85 a lot of fans went to stadium to see and watch Igbinoba and he did not disappoint by scoring for Old Bendel State against Anambra in the final.Nduka Ugbade played for Lagos. This was after Kodak 85 WC,very sweat experience cos most of the boys represented their states in Kwara 85. |

That Scotland 89 set to me were even better than the Canada 87 set. If not for that over-aged Saudi Keeper that stopped all our shots, we would have won that tournament. Yes our Scotland 89 team remain one of the best U17 till today better than Many Garba boys,i watched both and good enough i was at UAE live watching Manu boys or what would say about Chile 87 U 20 team, good team but messed up with indiscipline players like Etim Esin. |

Icon4s: You recall that game: Cameroon vs Nigeria in 1989. It was a 1990 WC qualifying game. We needed just a draw from that game in the Lions' den to qualify for our first ever WC. And o, the tension had no rival. To make it worse, away games were hardly aired live so we had to listen to Ernest Okonwo's commentaries on Radio Nigeria.
My brother I couldn't sit down to listen to the commentaries. I almost climbed our center table several times when Nigeria was allegedly on the offensive.
We celebrated half time whistle shouting "ope o" half time! while heaving big sighs of relief because from the commentaries it seemed Cameroon were more on the offensive. You know how that game later ended na. We heard cases of people fainting when Cameroon finally took the lead late into the game.
What was your experience of that game like? One of the Biyik brothers scored us and David Ngodigha lost his teeth,Nigeria paraded players like Keshi,Use,Etim,Siasia and I remember Westerhoff first official match,Wonder boy Paul Halmiton was the coach before appointment of Clemens Westerhoff,so a lot of confusion,Rufai was sent back by Westerhoff, very tense match. |

Icon4s: People have stopped following football generally and the followership of the Eagles has drastically reduced.
I watched clips of a game recently: Nigeria vs Italy, FIFA U17 semifinal, Canada 87.
Echoes of the wild jubilations that followed after Christopher Nwosu scored that goal just rushed through my mind. I saw the young Dimeji Lawal in that clip and how skillful he was. I was now wondering what was the hype about Musa Yahaya sef? Honestly those boys were so good. Kog45, please compare Dimeji Lawal with Musa Yahaya.
I believe we have seen better days of Nigerian football. Dimeji was a class with skill and pace better than Ahmed Musa of today then who is Musa Yahaya.Dimeji couldn't make it with eagles in the 90s cos he messed up with Westerhoff, not really a discipline player but extremely good, honestly i will only rate Finidi George ahead of him not even Tijani Babangida. |

Icon4s: That Ghana game! Chai!
My Edward Anser of Iwuanyanwu (my club then) was in goal for Ghana. Keeper wey we dey manage for our naija league then come turn stumbling block for naija in that match o.
We had some football crazy Ghanaian fans in my neighborhood then. oh come and see the mockery we received. That Ghanaian player that scored that winner: Prince Opoku Polly. I will never forget that name. I could not eat that night despite how my mum persuaded me. But I later ate sha. When the shock don commot for my body nobody reminded me say I Nova chop night food.
That of Algiers 90. I cried when Algeria scored the 4th goal in that opener. I couldn't watch again. I left to the corridor to cry my hearts out. When Nigeria pulled one back my elder brothers called me in. Only for minutes later Algeria made it 5. Raba Madjer. That guy. Chai!
What of Maroc '88 final? We scored a clean goal (Henry Nwosu) but it was disallowed. Only for that dubious ref to award Cameroon a soft penalty. I think Eguavoen caused it.
That one na annoyance everybody take finish that match. Our team had a good tournament overall and were accorded a heroic welcome.
The 1984 final na Nigeria scored first o. Muda Lawal. How we allowed Cameroon to score 3 pass us is still a mystery to me cause I only have memories of the first half. I didn't like football like that then.
1994 Super Eagles wiped away all our tears after many years of shocking defeats. Perfect,1984 was a team with young players like Keshi Stephen,Peter Rufai,Patrick Okala,Ademola Adeshina,Sofoluwe,Humphery Edebor,Henry Nwosu with senior Musa Lawal, not easy in the final cos Cameroon were full of experience players like Roger mills,Emma Kunde,Thomas Nkono,Antoine Bell, these are Espana 82 WC players. Oh Edward Ansah nearly play for Nigeria when he was with Leventis United but the presence of Rufai didn't help the situation but later opted for his home country.John Mastroudeus was not happy when he declared for Ghana, till today Ansah remain the best foreign kepper to keep in Nigeria league. Algiers 90 was a tournament that launched Westerhoff cos after losing 5-1 in opening march against Algeria the team went to the final and losing to the same team 1 nil, most of our foreign based stayed away from Algiers 90 due to club engagement except Andrew Use,Ademola Adeshina and Rashidi Yekini. This tournament gave us Daniel Amokachie,Alloy Agu and Uche Okechukwu. Henry Nwosu goal against Cameroon in the final of maroc 88 was a day light robbery and the Gabonese referee Jamel was just horrible in the final cos he later gave penalty to Cameroon after a tackle from Sunday Eboigbe against Roger Mills,Milla Roger scored the penalty. This was a tournament Keshi need to shuttled between Morocco and Belgium with private jet from Anderlecht. Nigeria against Ghana was a semi final and as you said man no fit eat after that match cos i have Ghanians as neighbors then, not easy.It was a match that really exposed Alloy Agu and a match that really showed that Keshu was a great leader.I remember Siasia hit a bar on the tail end of the match but very good match though we lost. |

Memories of playing against Algeria in the opener of Algiers 90 still hunted us. Just that we had a stronger team and playing against a relatively weaker opposition.
Jules Bukande, that guy na baller. Both teams played well. It was highly tensed. We saw the best of Keshi after Senegal equalized.

I still remember his well tailored pass at Senegal 92 to Stephen Keshi that gave us the second goal against Senegal. It was high tension match with Siasia scoring a beautiful goal and Jules Bocande equalised for Senegal after snatching ball from Keshi but Keshi redeemed his image after scoring the second goal and the winner. |

TheSuperNerd: Looollll..... I love Chief Icon4s' views myself because he is more conservative than I am.... He knows when to criticise and when to acknowledge. His is the best in terms of balance no doubt.
But uhmmm... I saw your option A in my mention as TheGoodJoe first.... seems you just changed it to TheSupernerd now... Elder Kog45.... I catch you... scared of TheGoodJoe's legendary karate kick?
Anyway, What I presented yesterday were simple and undeniable facts on Nacho as a top 9 in a 4-2-3-1.... facts which some people found difficult to swallow because of pride and arrogance. What does it profit a man to stand by a defeated opinion? Why lie that Leicester didn't play 4-2-3-1 on Saturday?
Why also lie that I agreed to Nacho not being a striker? Why dodge revealing the truth of what or who an SS is?
He left my football questions and tactical arguments on the truth of Nacho's role on Saturday and was taking subtle routes of insults attacking my person, my intelligence (they always do that because it bites them so much), and wait for it... my mother.
He categorically said that PietroRico was right after all to do what he did to me.... which is insulting my mother. I guess Goldfish80 is not the gentleman he portrayed himself to be after all.... sh*t happens... people's true nature are eventually revealed... and his is of cowardice for evading a simple question on what or who an SS is...and also of Lies for stating that Nacho was not the lone striker/Top 9 up top in a 4-2-3-1... he said it was a two-pronged attack with Diabate who actually played all game from the right.... Whoscored, Squawks, Goal com, FourFourTwoStats, and many more certified the fact and rebuked Goldfish80's nonsensical lie... How can we go on tolerating such lies on a football thread? Dont you know we are here to educate as well?
Many may see me as Pro-Nacho... but the truth remains that Nacho floored the "nacho is useless as a top9/Lone striker/CF" with yet another fine display in same role. And Leicester played in a 4-2-3-1 with Nacho up top... These are the simple truths that made Goldfish resort to insults and lame words trying to shift attention from football to discrediting my person... he even attacked my stand as a growing psychologist using glowing sarcastically childish terms to shift the balance of the discussion... so who started it? me? Naaahhhh... it is actually Goldfish80... he could not take it anymore... he was losing the argument and was caught in a corner but couldn't do one corner... so he had to react in the best and only way he could... Insults/Jabs... weak ones too... but then he mentioned That Insulting my mother was right afterall... backing PietriRico's actions... Yep.. that is your Goldfish80, Elder Kog45...
Funny how it had to take me to burst his limits and bubble... he had it coming. He simply boxed himself into a wall with his lies and his refusal to own up to them.
HE LIED ABOUT NACHO'S POSITION ON SATURDAY, HE LIED ABOUT THE FORMATION ALL IN A BID TO DISCREDIT NACHO AND BACK HIS COMMENT/STAND ON NACHO BEING USELESS.
He also lied about me agreeing with him... The old dude has lost it. He cannot debate fairly... he debates to win even when he is f**king and obviously wrong.
It is well shaa.... But I will always stand up for the Truth concerning any of our Super Eagles stars... Lies and half-truths about them won't be tolerated. We have a fanbase out there viewing this thread and they need to be properly informed and not lied to. Thank you. My comment is to spite you and goldfish80 and am very happy it touched you which show that you are very intelligent. I know you are a great analyst but you need to take it softly cos your profession is for noble people and i remember in the 80s and 90s seeing a medical student is awesome just to tell you how i value you and Michael2 though football is crazy but always remember you are very important personality in the society and take it cool no matter the provocation cos there are younger ones over there looking up to you especially those who wish to become a doctor in the future. Have you seen me go personal or attack anyone's personality even in the face of provocation? I have always laughed and kept my cool. The personal attacks yesterday was something that would have looked foolish if I walked away from. Even while I was discussing football, that boy and his girlfriend took it personal. Can you imagine that brat asking my place on the food chain in comparison with my mates. A girl I can cloth and shelter asking a question she dare not ask if she met me face to face. She made that statement and not even a a single soul called her to order. It's all good anyway. Yes we must have limits cos that's the only way we can have mutual understanding and respect. Lucque: It is obvious dat there are 3 factions in this group/thread... The iheanacho lovers(IHL)(dat see no wrong in wateva he does)led by thesupernerd, safarigirl, thegoodjoe etc. Na dis group I de .. ND d not-so-into iheanacho group.or like I like to call dem d NSIH group led by the honorable komekn, mikael2,goldfish80,oga forgiveness ND a few more.. . The way I see it the .the NSIH group always like to insist dat they are clear headed and cannot turn a blind eye to his failings... They are realistic in their approach or so they think.... They are not biased ND they always see things from d ryt way... Also these guys support themselves in any argument... But one thing they fail to understand is dat they aren't as unbiased as they think .. The IHL guys like us will always support iheanacho ND oda super eagle players cos Dats wat fans do,nd we owe no-one any apology for dat. Infact wen man city sold iheanacho, I went from being a fan of city to being a hater... I think however dat d only unbiased ppl are d icon4s and Co dat never take sides...but are objective in their analysis... Wat i think is dis... We are fans... Not critics.. Merriam-Webster, the Oxford dictionary and other sources define "fan" as a shortened version of the word fanatic. Fanatic itself, introduced into English around 1550, means "marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion". It comes from the Modern Latin fanaticus, meaning "insanely but divinely inspired". So we are all allowed to love the SE players as much as we want... Even if we see no fault in them it's still OK... Let's not try to change d way d other person thinks... If we all thought d same way ND spoke d same way... This thread will b boring as hell.
So lets realise dat d diversity in this thread is Wat makes it interesting... So goldfish80 ND thesupernerd pls let's drop this .i greet d house.. Good post and it's like we can only get the truth about Iheanacho from unbiased ones. Eg Who is the good analyst on Iheanacho (A.TheSuperNerd. B.goldfish80. Humility017: your argument is still not spot on... a striker can have a bad game when he fails to convert lot of his goal scoring chances...not really because he never registered his presence on the field of play....
take a look at okputu yesterday...he could only utilize one out of about 6 goal scoring opportunities he had...
that is in the negative.... regarding benzema in Madrid...should you understand why Madrid never signed saurez, abumenyang then you will get the reason why benzema still plays....

Ronaldo and the board are very comfortable over that...provided they have a player in the ranks who could comfortably challenge a Barcelona player for the ballon d'or and highest goal scorer award and benzema seems to be privy to that quest...being that he play to Ronaldo strength and abilities... My man his arguments is spot on and no need for us to go further on it having unnecessary pages on simple things that we need to agree on and move on. According to tbaba1234 a striker can only be judged by goal scoring meaning Okpotu had a good game despite losing so many chances then why are we criticising him if that's the yardstick to judge a striker performance So better for you to ask tbaba not Michael2 why he said scoring alone is enough to judge a striker irrespective of the striker performance on the field of play. I believe a response from tbaba would give us a good platform to talk on the issue further and we all learn from it cos asking Michael2 is like shading a shadow. |
