It will go far but won't complete it

Oga Topsy.. you know 3million won't go far..

It won't even roof the house..

Infact, for a standard build with an average footprint, and a "German floor", it won't really go far.

I guess you already assume the DPC is the tiwa n tiwa type that doesn’t require reinforcement (even it is BRC or hardcore) which I believe its installation will come at an additional cost.

I’m also assuming the rough-in plumbing pipe work will be done at a later time in the future. The owner can break wall and floor to achieve this.

Finally I guess there must be a separate amount budgeted for the engineer as his own professional fee because he cannot achieve all the above (compaction, surface treatment, pouring of the floor) in 2 days.
So if he’s earning 10k per day, that means all that’ll be left to hire mixer, compactor, pay workers and do all other logistics will be N120k.

To be fair to both parties, I’d tell the client to pay for all the things needed and negotiate the supervision fee separately with the engineer.

_______

Yesterday, we just concluded a 150m2 flooring job for someone here, I think we’ve gone well over that figure on labour cost.

I assumed the client provides all the materials.

Engineer comes with equipment and labour. I use BRC and a DPM on all my builds.. The BRC, Especially I'm areas with a large cross-section.

Oga Dennis, may I use your picture for analysis?

From this beautiful picture, you can see the SPACE but it still doesn't look minimalistic.

Which stills boils down to choice of colour and colour tones.

Simplicity is the ultimate form of style. The concept of minimalism is all about showcasing space rather than things.

That's one factor too.

Space.

The hard stuff in my opinion is the major determinant. You can't color over a too bold/huge edifice or furniture. The shape and design I believe is 75%.

I agree.

But don't you think the choice of cool neutral colour matters too?

As for the frosted plexiglass, you can always get that in Lagos.

If you get his contact please share..

Thanks all for the various inputs. So the 150k was meant to cover the cost DPM, compaction and labor to cast the German floor.

Let me play devil's advocate..

1. If he's using a plate compactor for the compaction, he will rent at about 15,000 per day. Add cost of transport to n fro site.

2. If he's buying DPM, add provisional sum of 35,000 - 40,000.

3. If he's going to pay carpentar for the woodwork, add 10,000 - 15,000 for labour.

4. If he's using a machine for the concrete work, he will spend 80 - 100k for Machine + workers.

I’ve moved baba.

I’m not going to drag someone who’s having a great time into your baseless accusation.

A simple question of “Why was there a need for option quotes on electrical pipe work during the project when you already have a contract covering everything in place?” You can’t provide answer.

You started tagging people up and down. Talking about wiring when we were discussing conduit pipe work.

I know lies when I see one. I know deflection when I smell one.

You WIN grin

Im trying to understand... How does this result in inferior pipe use for the piping stage

He can discuss wiring with anyone. It's not part of your job at that stage, right?

I’ve seen electrical. What about plumbing?

I believe we’ve moved on but if it won’t be an issue, I can still get an electrician to fish those pipes and get cables installed in them without worries at no cost to anyone.

Structured cabling is my major before I get into construction and I’ve worked on even far more complex situations.

Meanwhile, the client had a premium quote from top electrical contractor here (recommended by me) but chose to go with the cheapest in the market. I believe he has his own reasons

Fortunately for me, apart from steel trusses which was a variation item, the electrical work is the only part of my work that option quotes were sourced from subcontractors and picked based on clients approval.

Abi I lie?

I rest.

I've seen those pipes and I personally won't approve of their use on my site except I don't have a say in decision making.

Just a few questions Oga Brabus..

1. Did the client buy those pipes?

2. You used subcontractors for the electrical that were not your own workers right? An open bid yes? And client selected the subcontractors?

3. When the client chose the cheap quote, did you warn him those pipes for that price were inferior?

the brakepads, exhaust, shocks, radiator and battery are all in good shape. Even the tyres are in good shape. I changed the ATF cos it's black ish. There's coolant in th radiator and I used Hardex Gold engine oil(is it good?)

As for fuel economy, I don't really notice much difference from corolla. My first car was a corolla. One thing about the car that I like is that it's a smooth ride and balanced.

That mode and reset button on the steering, what is it for?

You didn't notice difference in fuel consumption from Corolla to Lexus?

First time I'm hearing this.

My Lexus consumes more fuel than the v4 Venza.

That is not true. The inverter size has nothing to do with your charging capacity. Charging happens upstream of the inverter. The inverter just converts the stored electricity in the batteries to AC that goes into your house. What is affecting the solar output are things like panel angle, in-built losses from panel through cables to charge controller, cloud cover, shade if any exists.

Thanks for the correction. Will also go back to read more. To understand.

This is how to calculate the number panels needed for your solar hybrid inverter

P = IVN/T

Where P = panels
I = Battery current(100Ah, 150AH, 200Ah etc0
V = Battery Voltage (12V, 24V)
N = Number of battery
T = Duration or Time(autonomy)

also if you want to calculate the hours to charge your battery below is the formular
T= IVN(PF)/P

T = Time
I = Battery current(100Ah, 150AH, 200Ah etc0
V = Battery Voltage (12V, 24V)
N = Number of battery
P.F = Power factor

Cc: Kolashangone

Thank you so much.. I have bookmarked this. Will go back to my books / drawing board.

My learning is that battery capacity compared with typical load is the main thing and that then determines number of panels for optimum charging from solar output less usage. Even though my panels are sized for 12KW, the highest solar output I have gotten instatenously is 8.5KW.

That's because your 10kvA inverter is actually 8.5kva when you consider power factor..

You can't have more than 8.5kW even if your panels are sized for 20Kva since your inverter is 10kva.

I stand corrected.

I use Victron 10kva inverter with thirty 400watt panels and 10 Pylontech US2000 48 V batteries. The thing cost an arm and a leg but at least lessens my mains usage significantly

This Sounds like a 4 million naira set up. For me personally, I don't think I'll run up to 7kva total energy use at any point in time..

I wasn’t ciear in my request. I don’t need to do all that.

I want to learn about cost effective products and where to get them from a Nigerian perspective.

I’ll be adding additional batteries and panels as my system ages so I need a hoof hybrid converter.

Hope my specific needs makes sense.

According to my research, I heard its better to buy a PSW inverter and a separate charge controller (mostly 60A).

Try to research into difference BTW Pure Sine wave and modified Sine wave inverter.

I'll be doing a DIY installation too.. sometime in June/ July but I've been researching ahead..

In this scenario, you paid the contractor all the contract sum to deliver the project in a turnkey contract. The contractor, in this case cannot lay claim to fluctuation because he's expected to buy his materials in advance and stockpile before any sudden and unforeseeable price increase in materials.

This is unlike when the client pays as the project construction proceeds on site.

There are some sites you cannot stockpile though.

There are also some materials you can't stockpile.

On a serious note, I salute contractors sha. I mean how does one approach a client to pony up more because prices changed within days. And it's usually not small change either.

That's why I said only an understanding client can be worked with in this economy..

A contractor also has to document everything possible in order to convince the client he's not trying to rip him off.

Oga Sir, No No!!.
30 tons should be 30 tons anywhere, anytime.
The issue is this, complete 30 tons can only be delivered by a trailer, most atimes, accessibility to sites is usually an issue considering turning radius and the strength of the soil to be able to allow a trailer to deliver.
So what those vendors do is they promise you 30tons and end up coming with 25-27 tons knowing fully well that a trailer can't access your site. So they come with a double axle truck. That way they make extra profit.

If you really want to know about this, request for waybill before they offload the material at your site.

The waybill usually contains information like
Quantity of material in tons or kg
Size/grade of material
Number plate of the vehicle
Time of departure from the company.
Note: this is if you are buying direct from the company.

There are some 30 tonnes trucks that aren't those kind of trailers you talked about.

Howo 30 tonnes trucks aren't trailer-sized.

This was the reason I did a DIY building from plan to finish, I wanted to derv into the minds of Suppliers, builders, designers etc, waht I found was this, 2many variable in the building trade and not enough constants' seriously do not know how Engineers and contractors could give and estimate for a job they are going to do in two weeks, cos prices changes daily. If I was not doing all by myself I would have thought someone ate my money. My advice is please guys lets cut some slacks for builders and Engineers in the house. Sometimes the sublet the jobs to a worker and the worker do not give a damn about reputation and does a shoddy job, I have one as we speak, ordinary window dressing he made a big messs and wasted 3 bags of cement.

Feedback from DIY'ers. just like EgunMogaji..

While acknowledging it's not easy work, We should also note that the reason most home owners give out contracts is so they won't have to deal with the "variables".

And contractors get paid for it..

A more understanding client & home owner relationship is the way forward.
