@coolestchris good you said you have for sale a gsd mix. Better still you could have mentioned what it was mixed with. Then that all local breeds or mixed breeds are short haired is a falacy. Or the fact that what you have is long haired, even as a puppy, does not qualify it as not being local with a tinge of gsd is another falacy. Furthermore I'll advice you review your price cos those that know a bit about dogs won't bite that price. Not putting down ur hustle

Peace.

These buddies are getting along quite well now. The frisky kiddo always ready to play while Jade prefers more me time or some peace. Kiddo knows his boundaries too... Don't try to eat from Jade's plate. She will let him know he's trespassing but no bite or fight. The constant jealousy when one is being treated nicely than the other is there as I'm always balancing it so no one feels left out. I sometimes call the kiddo Rocky the landlord as he's extra smart and very alert and seems to be the first to alert for any strange sound or approach.

But you still have to TOUCH the carcass
That's why you have gloves on one hand and strict guidelines for moving such level of dangerous carcass. I also mentioned protective clothing. In some instances all clothing used for the day are destroyed and not even reused. Equipment that maybe reused are under strict conditions sterilized for reuse too. The gloves might not be even simple surgical gloves too.

OP, I am not a Muslim but curiousity got a better part of me...
@10. Pigs carry about 30 diseases which can be easily passed to humans. This is why Allah commanded us to not even to touch their carcass....
How are you expected to dispose of the carcass of a pig around your vicinity if you do not touch it?
There are ways of disposing highly risky carcases. A good example is during the Ebola epidemic. Protetective gear and rigid transportation guidelines. Complete and controlled Incineration is usual option to avoid fluid seapage into water sources.

It took a while for territorial instincts to kick in really. She's now 8 months old and she started differentiation of strangers about a month ago. She's balanced friendly alert but won't take kindly to someone barging into the compound without being led in. Once she sees your accepted and welcome by me she chills.

To my surprise she's taken the feisty little guy, Rocky, in after a few days and would share her food and toys with him now. I spent loads of time to supervise the integration. She was pensive and swung between acceptance and aggression but I constantly repeated no or stop and got her to calm down that we can all be one big happy family.

So this little guy joins the pack grin grin

He's a study in temperament. Totally different from Jade. Acertive, suspicious and at almost 7 weeks old 'yaps' at the opening of the door to the compound either from outside or from within. Rocky is holding his ground and will not be run over by older bigger mate. Small for it's age (I guess it's the last pup in its litter) so he's on a rich diet as its sire is quite impressive. If for nothing its won my heart for being small but having a large heart to stand it's ground grin grin

PetsRe: Help by kolokolobi(m): 6:01pm On Nov 19, 2017
Socialise, feed well, help build confidence, regular walks. For it's age at three months it's still a toddler. It will come around in time. Rots are naturally confident so it should show breed traits in time.
PetsRe: Hulk Is For Sale by kolokolobi(m): 5:21pm On Nov 14, 2017
If I go by the timeline Hulk should be about 7..8 months. The breed can be hyper active especially when young. On the aggression I don't know how much socialization it received but it's not a lost cause. You could also get professionals or trained hands to help you with some obedience training if you can afford training and board.

It looks lovely I must say and I'd be glad to have Hulk.

Many laughing why he may sue. If he can show that the government that either directly or indirectly created that man hole did not have duty of care to warn him or other persons of the impending danger or did not barricade same man hole to avert the accident he has grounds to claim for disability that could arise out of that negligence.

I am not a lawyer. However it is possible.

Done all this. Rex is still a wimp undecided
How old is Rex? Breed?

Some dogs take time to mature into this protective dog that quite a few crave for. I do have a 6+ month old GSD in my pack. I must say she's the most friendly but I love her balance. If ever you hear her bark be VERY sure something is out of the ordinary. Secondly in all her playfulness, which is almost ridiculous, she will stand alert at the approach of a stranger to my space and will bark if approach continues after 50 meters. Best of all she will stand down once I give the command to STOP or NO and sit.

So help Rex with some confidence and love. It'll come around.

Did she litter just one pup prematurely? How was the premature pup disposed as observed by her? Apart from loss of appetite is there any other noticeable symptoms of illness or just, if I understand, the depression caused by the incident of premature litter? Would you have an idea what led to the premature litter as in cause or events that led immediately to the premature litter?

Pandamatenga, Botswana— Quelea birds have turned out to be Pandamatenga farmers' worst enemy.

In 2013, the birds reportedly caused between 60-90 per cent damage to fields in the area; however, they arrested the situation using falcons.

https://thevoicebw.com/bird-bird/
In an endeavor to reduce the use of toxic chemicals to control the destructive effects of migratory pests such as the red billed quelea bird, the department of crop production has adopted the use of the falcon bird.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) Dr Kgoseitsile Phillemon Motsu says falcons are one of the best control methods of controlling the destructive quelea birds as they are safe to the environment.

The MoA which is collaborating with a company from the United States of America on this project has successfully conducted a demonstration on four commercial farms in Pandamatenga.

“Last year four falcons were used to scare the quelea birds on a sorghum field of 1 250 hectares.

The predator was able to protect the crop from the attack by the birds.

A lanner and peregrine would fly multiple flights in the morning and the remaining two would be flown in the afternoon,” Motsu said.

During the demonstration period, Dr Motsu said, the trial farms sustained a damage of less than three percent, while other farms which did not use the falcons to control the mass destructive pest birds, sustained damage varying between 10 and 80 per cent.

I was flabbergasted to read that just 4 falcons managed 1,250 hectares ( this translates to 3,125 acres or 26,909 plots of 100ft × 50 ft). Amazing!

I got to know that such skill can be learned from South Africa. One can import the trained falcons too. Amazing. Also, there are associations and organisation where one can enrol and learn the act. This means if one learns this, there is no need to deploy any drone. Quelea are greatly terrified by Falcons and hawlks.

Well, I think it may be too cumbersome for an individual to pick this up. And the hope of such individual to be contracted to manage rice farms might be frustrated. Is it not Nigeria we are in? Lol. You will be shocked what these farmers will want to pay for such service. Many will even plead to pay deposit and then balance after which they will never do. Is it not Nigeria we are in?

The solution is that such individual should learn the act, import the birds and manage is personal farm. However, such farm must be big enough to cover the cost of maintaining the farm and feeding the birds. I read that frozen Quelea birds are used to feed the falcons so as to discourage them from killing quelea birds (apparently, animal right organisation frown against killing them). But will any individual want to spend addition cost of feeding his falcons when there are free meat in the sky in Nigeria and there may not be any animal rights organisation to rebuke him/her? Lol
Good to know this idea is practicable and effective. Next is to know how to domesticate and actualise.

I have heard of hawks trained by security agencies in the US to 'arrest' nuisance/illegally flown drones in restricted areas. The hawks will capture any such unauthorized drones and take hand them over to the authorities.

I do agree that opportunity exists for us to explore this option. Unfortunately, it might end up being financially unaccessible to most f us if the required expertise to train and manage such predator birds is not yet ready available in Nigeria.

I am in sync with you on this.

Thank you for this.

Cheers
Thank you.

One way to thin out cost is to aggregate use. I know one or two falconer start up in the UK who provide services to more than one client. Airports mainly. Further more it may be seen as a business opportunity by those who are dedicated to this while farm owners pay a fee for services provided not necessarily farm owners owning the business. Like I said if incorporated with drones and the services provided over various farms the cost per farm may be less than doing or going it alone.

I know dogs are used to clear run ways from birds invasion in many airports. You know this is ground level and may not work on Farms.

I do not think airports model will work for Agric since it is ground level; however, it can still be looked into. Yes, it is possible to have birds as predators to scare them away.
I was thinking the falcons or hawks will operate from pre built elevated posts within and around the farm. Like I said I'm no expert in this just thinking if it could be scaled and used along maybe the drone model. Increasing the number of predatory birds around particular farms could also ward off potential bird attacks. Im thinking.

I would be very much interested in a solution like this. It is a promising option. Do you know if this is in use by the Nigerian Aviation? Perhaps one should contact NCAA... Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
In Nigeria I don't think so but I am aware in some airports in Europe and the US.

Thank you for that input. The presence of the predatory birds could work. But from what I have read, predators find it difficult to attack them inflight because they quelea travels in tens of thousands or more. They can knock-off predators from the skies.

I understand that predators find it easier to attack the nests.

If the predators are trained, hey should probably work. In my search for solutions I was in communication with a bird control company that deploys a device with pre recorded bird calls of the target birds and those of their predators.

Apparently, the target birds ar device into thinking their predators are in the vicinity and they hear the distress calls of their own kind. They assume danger is imminent and they fly away. This has been said t work 100% for many species.

This company claimed not to have the bird calls of the quelea quelea (remember the birds are denizen of African countries) and those of their predators. They wanted me to go obtain those recordings. That was where our communication ended. I was only able to obtain low quality recordings of the quelea; I couldn't get the ones for the predators.

Perhaps if I put in more effort in getting the calls for the falcon and hawks, I could find someone who already has th recordings. However, I felt this American bird control company wanted me to do the field work for them, get bird call recordings that they didn't have ; and they would still go ahead to charge me a huge sum for their device, while they can subsequently make a killing selling that product across Africa.

Anyway, back to your point; there should be a way to carefully deploy actual predators to driving the birds away. Whether one bird would be sufficient at every point would be determined by the experts in that field. Do we have such trained falcons or hawks in Nigeria?
I am aware falcons have been used on the aviation industry to curb bird strike. I do not know if this could be scaled to solve this problem in agriculture apart from the sound mimicking.... It however provides an opportunity that can be explored as an alternative to solving this problem.
