Politics › Re: Effiong: Biafra’s President, Nigerian Hero by Konquest: 6:31pm On Nov 09, 2017 |
Amoto94: By Emeka Obasi He was the man saddled with the suicidal job of meeting with the Nigerians after Biafra had lost steam. General Philip Asuquo Effiong was already a soldier the year Col. Olusegun Obasanjo was eight years old. He was commissioned before Generals Emeka Ojukwu and Yakubu Gowon.
When the chips were down, Gen. Effiong braved all odds to put the war to an end with the corollary humiliation, as Biafran Head of State. Ojukwu had joined the Grey Ghost to begin a life in exile. The erstwhile Biafran leader told his Chief of General Staff, he was travelling to Cote D’Ivoire in search of peace.
Thanks to Gen. Effiong, the war was brought to an end. This man who did so much for Biafra and Nigeria, unfortunately, has become largely forgotten by those who should celebrate him as a true hero. By bringing the crisis to an end he saved many lives and united the country once again.
Until he died on November 6, 2003, I doubt if Gen. Effiong drove more than a rickety Peugeot 505 car. Nigeria forgot him. The Army abandoned him. Gen. Ojukwu was welcomed back like a hero in 1982 and even in death, was buried like a President. His wife also became an Ambassador. Some other Biafran soldiers would later benefit from Nigeria. Chief of Army Staff ( after Gen. Alex Madiebo), Brig. Patrick Amadi became member of the House of Representatives in 1979. Col. David Ogunewe was reabsorbed and unlike other officers, did not lose rank. His son would later become a Two-Star general. His nephew, Independence, was in the National Assembly Emeka Omeruah emerged as governor, minister, NFF Chairman. His younger brother, Paul Ndimele Omeruo, was governor too. Ndubuisi Kanu, Alison Madueke, Robert Akonobi and Ifeanyi Aniebo were also governors. Emeka Ananaba got the job of Deputy governor, his wife Nnenne worked with INEC in Akwa Ibom. Sam Momah and Canice Umenwaliri were ministers, Juventus Ojukwu, member of the Federal House. Chris Ugokwe headed the National Population Commission.
Let us get a clearer picture. Amadi joined the Army same day as Obasanjo. Ogunewe was Obasanjo’s senior in Third Battalion Kaduna. Omeruah was close to Gen. Sani Abacha. His brother, Paul, was in Military School, Zaria with David Mark, Tunde Ogbeha and Abdul One Mohammed. Ugokwe joined the Army same day as Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Ojukwu was Aide de Camp to Gen. Hassan Katsina. Gen. Effiong had no one to fight for him. He joined the Army on July 28, 1945, as a Private. Officers like Adeyinka Adebayo (1947), Zakariya Maimalari, Conrad Nwawo and Kuru Mohammed joined the Army after him. However, they were all commissioned ahead of Effiong who was decorated on January, 11, 1956. Even prominent Biafran civilians later bagged enviable jobs in Nigeria. Mathew Mbu and Emma Agumah were ministers. Agumah’s son, Igho, represented Ikwerre in the Federal House. Uche Chukwumerije was also a minister as well as Professor Gordon Ezekwe. Francis Osakwe who piloted Ojukwu to Abidjan also flew Gowon to Kampala.
Gen. Effiong could have chosen to stay away from Biafra, like Cols Wellington Bassey, Emmanuel Ekpo and Admiral Akinwale Wey and Captain Nelson Soroh. He could have defected like George Kurubo. He chose Biafra bearing pain of the assassination of Major Ekamem Ibanga and Captain Ofong Ukpo Isong.
At the time of the July 29, 1966 coup, Effiong was acting Commander of First Brigade, Kaduna. When Biafra was declared, he was given the lowly job of Commander, Biafra Militia. His junior, Hilary Njoku, was appointed Army Chief. Effiong was also senior to Ojukwu. He served under the same Ojukwu who did not want to serve under Gowon.
Effiong was loyal and when it was time to take risk, he gladly accepted to bring the bloody war to a close. You can imagine being called Philip by Obasanjo, a junior, in Amichi and Gowon, another subordinate officer, in Lagos. Ojukwu could not bear the shame of surrendering to a junior Obasanjo. Effiong did it to save the country. And we should remain eternally grateful to him.
Effiong could have chosen to continue the battle thereby wasting more lives. Afterall, Ojukwu had been dismissed from the Nigeria Army on July 1, 1967. So it could have been interpreted that as the Biafran leader fled, the erstwhile Chief of General Staff decided to continue the fight. Even when men like Justice Luis Mbanefo and Prof. Eni Njoku challenged the Nigerian government for creating East Central State without consulting the Igbo, Effiong sued for peace so that Nigeria would be one again. At that time in Lagos as they were preparing to go to Dodan Barracks to surrender formally, Obasanjo offered them the option of going back to the battle field.
Before the trip to Lagos, Effiong adorned his Biafran camouflage even when other officers chose civilian attire. First, he discussed with Maj. S.O. Tomoye and Lt.Col. Alani Akinrinade and later Obasanjo in Amichi in a meeting which fully involved Col. Joe Achuzia.
Born in Akangkang, Ibiono Ibom in Akwa Ibom State on November 25 1925, Effiong married Josephine Abbott in 1956. Their children include Rose, Mercy, Val, Charles, Junior, Francis, Philippa, Liz and Paul. Two of them, Philip(Junior) and Philippa are married to Igbo spouses. He may be forgotten by Nigeria, but some of his soldiers will not forget. Sasa Kalu, the young school boy soldier and a member of the Corporal Nwafor Saladin crew, visited Effiong in Ikot Ekpene in September 2001, to write the preface to the book ‘ Corporal Nwafor : a true Black African story’.
This officer gentleman, Philip Effiong, First Commander of the Nigeria Army Ordnance Corps, deserves to be celebrated by all as a brave man of peace. Nigerian History will not be unkind to him even if our leaders pretend to forget his role.
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/08/effiong-biafras-president-nigerian-hero/ ^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ Brilliant historical dimensions! I still don't get why he chose to serve under his juniors in the military like Col.Emeka Ojukwu and Hilary Njoku the first rebel army leader [who Ojukwu later locked up in prison during the Nigerian Civil War, before Alexander Madiebo took over from him]. I even read about 10 years ago a published complaint by Philip Effiong's son that his father's achievements during the Civil War were not recognized by the Ibos. PS: He and his beautiful fair-skinned wife had NINE children! That is an evergreen legacy... |

Afam4eva: It's a common practice among Igbo parents to encourage their wards to pick English over Igbo. Not just pick, but to discard the Igbo language altogether. For some it's more subtle while for others, there's a concerted effort to make sure Igbo or any form of vernacular is not spoken in the home. For those kind of parents, i say, shame to them. ^^^^^^^^^^ |
Politics › Re: If Bukola Saraki Is Not Yoruba, Then Bishop David Oyedepo Is Also Not Yoruba by Konquest: 4:40pm On Nov 09, 2017 |
TundeHashim: bro...while I completely agree with u that there's a cultural assimilation in Ilorin...I am, however indifferent about whether Saraki is a Yoruba or not. however, u made an error. The Balogun Fulani have paternal Fulani ancestry traceable to a particular quarters in Kebbi. I'm Fulani and I've got relatives married to the olufadi and imam-Fulani clans. However, you're absolutely right if you had said Balogun Gambari. I presume you know they're four Baloguns in Ilorin. Two Yorubas(Ajikobi and Alanamu), One Hausa(Gambari) and one Fulani (Fulani). Some crazy power play happened in Balogun Gambari quarters that eventually led to a Yoruba man (murogo) becoming a Balogun Gambari. But we're all one..a big family bounded by an Islamic identity headed under the leadership of the house of Alimi... ^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ @TundeHashim It will interest you to note that Dr. Olusola Saraki's father [Alhaji Muttahiru Saraki] in early 1963 told Alh. AbdulGaniy Folorunso Abdulrazak an Ilorin indigene, who was the then Nigerian Ambassador to Côte d' Ivoire that he is an Egba man from Abeokuta, but went for Quaranic studies in Agbaji. I first read this in a copy of The News Magazine and an online version of that story is on Sahara Reporters. Ahj. Muttahiru had 3 wives as of that 1963. The Sarakis know this history I believe but for for the purpose of politics, Dr. Olusola Saraki had to give the mythological story of being a "Fulani" of Mali ancestry. It was just subterfuge to be accepted by the Northern Nigeria power brockers! Wikipedia is NOT a reputable place to get accurate information about issues because it gets edited regularly by propagandists and that is why schools in the Western world do not allow references from Wikipedia from their students. I remember reading about Alh. DanMusa who married the owner of Bisket Stores saying in a magazine interview in the early 2000s that his father migrated to Ilorin and that he saw himself as a Kwara person but now it seems he is using Niger State now. He being of Fulani stock but married to a Yoruba woman from Ijebuland[Bisket] and he grew up speaking Yoruba fleuenly. What struck me in that interview was how Fulani of the same stock like the Dan Musas claimed multiple states in Nigeria, because the Dan Musas also exist in Katsina as well which is where they originally are from. That said, the British Archival materials such as the History of Nigeria by Sir Allan Burns who was the Governor General of Nigeria clearly stated that Ilorin is a Yoruba town, and that Illorin is one of the Biggest Yoruba towns in Colonial Nigeria. Lastly I have stated before that all the Archival materials should be gathered by the original Yoruba owners of Ilorin [Ilo Irin], to the International Courts so they can have a greater role in their town. I remember reading archival materials about Ilorin and it was indicated that Balogun Alanamu [of Yoruba descent] was the MOST powerful man in Ilorin but the British George Goldie's schemings led to the elevation of the emir[of mixed Yoruba and Fulani heritage] who was just an Islamic leader to play a more dominant role. We know the British used the Fulani emirs to collect taxes for them from the conquered territories. It is also on record that the then British Governor of the Lagos Colony had indicated that Ilorin should be merged with the South instead of the former North, but Sir George Goldie of the Royal Niger Company rejected it and said that area of Nigeria was within his "sphere of trading influence" so that is how the northernmost part of Yorubaland ended up in the Old Northern Region [Kwara and Kogi States]. There should just be a referendum and their should be no fighting or bloodshed over Ilorin. I'm aware that you have mixed Fulani and Yoruba heritage as you have already stated in your NL profile and I don't see anything wrong in that. Atiku Abubakar is Fulani from Adamawa and one of his wives, Titi is from Osun and their mixed heritage children will always be welcome by their kith-and-kin or Osun cousins. |

Our elders have refused to go home, even after retirement. Our towns and cities are deserted. Our people are now organizing traditional marriages of their children outside our land. Abagworo: It's the issue of access to sea. Afam I am a well rooted man in Rivers State and I can swear with anything that it is impossible as things are right now to attempt building any canal that will cut across Rivers land for Igbos to trade. Anybody that tells you it's possible knows nothing or is deceiving himself.
We need sincere peace and trust with these minorities before such dream can come true. ^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ You are a very deep thinker. You've helped me to give an accurate answer to my post directly above this one. Akwa Ibom and Rivers States especially will NOT allow any dredging of the Imo river which empties into the Atlantic Ocean in the event of a split of Nigeria. Some said a Sea Port can be built in Abia, but it is only an unviable River Port that can be built there in a worse case scenario. Airfreight is the other alternative for most hinterland States in Nigeria! |

Ugomba: I laughed out loud when I saw the threat of Northern youths to Igbos, ordering them to leave the north. The North don't want restructuring, what do they now want? Do these northerners know the implications of these threat? 90% of Internal Generated Revenue in the North are gotten from Taxation of Igbo markets, Hotels, Factories etc. NDI IGBO, Listen, Lagos is the most populated state in Nigeria with 25+million occupants and the same lagos ironically has the smallest landmass in Nigeria, If Lagos can contain 25million people, then Enugu and Anambra alone can contain All Igbos. Igbo land is bigger than Rwanda, Israel, Gambia, Singapore etc and these are Countries of their own. If Egypt can build an artifical canal as seaport, Igbos can dredge the Obeaku water in Ukwa, Abia state to the Atlantic. It is 12nauticals to the atlantic ocean . There is Oil and gas in Igbo land, from Egbema, Ukwa, Ndoki, Oguta, Ogbaru etc what about Solid minerals like Limestones, Coal, Tin, Columbite, Timber etc that are in commercial size in Igbo land. We have huge markets, and most importantly a very great Human Resources. . I call upon all Igbo investors in the North to start the process of relocating their businesses to the east, why will an Imo man build a hotel in jigawa when he can build it in Oguta or Okigwe? Why will an Abia man build a mall in Kano when he can build it in Umuahia Why will umeofia want to build a tomato product industry in sokoto when he can build in Onitsha, Nnewi or Asaba. . - Lets build international airports in Igbo areas just like Sam mbakwe build the imo airport by shrewd contribution. Lets copy the Israeli method who returned home and build their homeland. . - Some Towns in Igbo land like Arochukwu, Orlu, Okigwe, Nnewi, Afikpo, Nsukka, etc should be build and transformed into a city. . - Do you know that Coal in Enugu can power up the whole Igbo land or alternatively the Gas in Oguta and Egbema can power up a Gas power plant in Igbo land. Don't forget the already existing Thermal power plant in Alaoji Abia that is built by Barth Nnaji. . - What about Aba? We can open up Industrial estates in Nnewi,Aba, Asaba, Okigwe etc and start producing some products we will use in Igbo areas inorder to grow the GDP and IGR. . - What about Agriculture? Farming should be given and commercialised to Big farm investors. By the way, when you Eat Oha soup or Nsala soup, how many of the ingredient come from the North? NONE. Is it their beef? Ebonyi can build a massive cow farm, Imo can build a massive Poultry farm etc. We can get and produce our own meat. . - Lets build more markets and High rise Residential buildings for easy and organised accomodation. . - Where are our industralists and investors, it is time to saturate the entire Igbo land with trillions worth of your investments. . - What about our own media, we need investment in internationalised media in Igbo land so that we can tell our story and advertise our land to the world. .. - What about ICT Park in Igbo land, we have the brains to grow many service based and logistic technopreneurship in Igbo land.
. The empty threat by the northern youths should be a wakeup call. Even if you want to base outside Igboland, then travel abroad. Respect comes when your house is in order. IGBOS lets think home. UGOMBA- The A nioma First Son ^^^^^^^^^^^ |

Mind you hausa being an afro asiatic like arabic has other words with the prefix al like almakashi which means scissors or almajiri which means student. ^^^^^^^^ Spot on...! Yeah! It confirms my earlier post that Yoruba and Hausa have Arabic-derived words in them. Islam came to Oyo Empire 500 years ago with the first mosque in Yorubaland in Iwo, Osun State. Malian clerics brought Islam to Yorubaland and this is why Yoruba's previously referred to Islam as "Esin Imale" or the "Religion of Mali" Yoruba, Asante, and Hausa were written in Arabic scripts as well in the Royal Courts. Incidentally, the Spanish language has about 40% of the words in it derived from Arabic! This is because of the invasion of the Iberian Peninsula by the Berbers/Arabs until they were militarily expelled from Spain or in Arabic [Al Andalus] in 1492. |

IPOB has changed Portharcourt name to Igweocha, how do you expect the minorities like Ogoni to feel, atleast Portharcourt is all they have to call their city by virtue of being Rivers indigene. why are ipobs behaving this way? Properties › Re: We Are Expanding Our Kingdom To Accommodate Lagos Population - Elegushi by Konquest: 8:57am On Nov 09, 2017 |
PropertiesNaija: The traditional ruler of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi , has said that the kingdom is extending its territories to help accommodate the growing population of Lagos residents.
He stated this on Saturday at the ground -breaking of a new city in Lagos known as the Imperial International Business City, a joint venture development between Channeldrill Resources Limited and the Elegushi Royal Family .
Elegushi said the project was conceived after the Lagos State Government gave approval for the expansion of Ikate Kingdom by 200 hectares of land to Lekki Phase 1, through dredging of the lagoon , adding that the proposed city would stretch from the end of Freedom Road to the end of NICON Town. He added, “ The Lagos population is escalating and there is a need to expand the kingdom , that was how the vision of the new city was birthed . We have been on it for some years; it is still like a dream to me , because a lot of people didn ’ t believe we could do it . “ Normally when you want to embark on reclamation like this, you do your due diligence and Environmental Impact Assessment , we have contacted the world class Royal Haskoning of the Netherlands and they have given us all the best advise such as dredging 3.5 metres above sea level for us to have a flood -free city .
“ We travel every time and we love good things , so, I thought we should replicate what we see out there here in Lagos ; it is not about the money but about leaving a good legacy for the coming generation and in readiness for the expansion.”
The Managing Director , Channeldrill Resources Limited , Mr. Femi Akioye, said the city had been designed for residents to live and also work , adding that plans had been made to ensure that it remained flood -free for at least 75 years.
Akioye said , “ With this city , we aim to change the meaning of development by bringing in the things we see abroad here in Lagos . Smart, green , safe and sustainable are the elements that will drive the city . “ We are also taking advantage of emerging technology in the city such as main gas generation plant , potable water treatment plant , waste water management plant, local utility network , data centre , among others.”
He stated the city would be utility self -sufficient to ensure perfection in infrastructure efficiency, and would be connected by future high speed water transportation, high speed rail and expressways to other parts of Lagos mainland , island and beyond , with a mix of villas , town houses and medium density apartments as well as a business district. The infrastructure consultants to the project , Mott MacDonald Limited of the United Kingdom , said that the infrastructure design of the city would be based on ensuring that the city was self -sustaining ; smart and eco -friendly with steady flow of traffic; flood- free lifetime of 100 years ; general utility efficiency , and the best technology .
“ The city is being designed to align with the future developmental expansion and population growth of Lagos State for the next 50 years. The dream of making this a reality has been further boosted with the Lagos State Government ’ s 2030 transport vision plans , which will be very useful for IIBC connectivity design, ” leader of the Mott MacDonald team, Stuart Croucher said.
Croucher stated that part of his firm’ s mandate was to ensure that the city was a zero flood zone for the next 100 years, and was already working with Royal HaskoningDHV as the reclamation and marine consultants to the project .

irepnaija4eva: WARRI—THE Iwere People’s Congress, IPC, Warri, Delta State, has lashed out at at the Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, IPDI, and the Niger Delta Scholars, NDS, which recently faulted the claim to the ownership of Warri by the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, saying that the groups were misguided and misdirected in their eruption.
Secretary of the Itsekiri group, Raymond Aderejor, in a statement, said that no matter how the leases by Chief Dore Numa referred to by the Ijaw organisations were embedded, “For historical and legal clarity, those leases referred to are Warri Land leases granted by Chief Dore Numa (Itsekiri) and other Itsekiri chiefs, acting for and on behalf of the Olu of Warri and Itsekiri people of Warri.
“It has been held by courts of competent jurisdiction that the name on the leases is not indicative of ownership. They are mere descriptions. It may interest the aforementioned groups, authors of the news item, to know that Alder of Alders Town was a Yoruba man. No one can give that which he does not have (Nemo dare potest quod non habet).
“Another false claim by the Ijaw groups in their attempt to misdirect the general public is on the so called ‘Chief Dore Numa’s letter to Ogbe-Ijoh people, dated 1923.’ This so- called ‘Chief Dore’s letter of renunciation over Agbassa Land’ was drafted by S.L. Bucknor, legal counsel to the Agbasa Urhobo on the instigation of his clients, the Agbasa people.
“This letter was tendered in evidence in the case of Ometa vs Chief Dore Numa in 1926, where Bucknor, under cross examination, admitted under oath that his clients instigated him to forge the document. Needless to state that the Agbassa people lost the case in all courts up to the Privy Council in London.
“Besides, if the so-called ‘Chief Dore’s letter of renunciation’ was important and of any legal value to the Ijaw to maintain their claim on Warri land, why did they not rely on it in their claim of ownership of Warri, in the case of Chief Izoukumo Olioki (m) and 5 others vs Itsekiri Communal Land Trust and one other, on 9/7/64?
“It is pertinent to mention that the Ijaw lost the suit. They went to the Supreme Court in 1965 and again lost. At the Supreme Court, due to the frivolity of their action, the Ijaw were precluded from ever bringing any further actions or action against the Itsekiri in respect of the leases above.
“IPDI and NDS, deliberately tried to misinform the public when they said, ‘It is pertinent to note that the Itsekiri were visitors to Ijaw land. This is a fact you cannot put under the carpet. They were nursed and given Adirimo, an Ijaw woman from Ogulagha to raise the purported Itsekiri Kingdom. How can a man who visited Ijaw at Amatu and Oruesolemo and squatted for several decades turn to own such lands?”
“The history of the origin of the Itsekiri people have been long settled by plethora of erudite historians and judges in landmark judgments. More recently, Prof. Obaro Ikime (Professor Emeritus), one of the authorities on the Niger Delta history said in 1982, ‘All I consider necessary to stress is the fact that we must always draw a distinction between the origins of the people and that of the monarchy. The people always pre-date the monarchy and Kingdom. Let me repeat that: the people always predate the Kingdom

However, an old employee of the eastern government in the 60’s has recounted how Biafran soldiers killed, maimed and buried bodies of the inhabitants of Calabar.
Qoute:
Besides the confession of this employee, we have supporting evidence regarding the inhumane treatment of minority groups under Biafra’s territories.
These are issue’s the Igbo people and IPOB need to answer. If they so love and are loved by the Calabar’s, Igala’s and Idoma’s – Why did they murder them ?
Evidence continues to proove that the Biafran project is nothing but a proxy to access the wealth of the oil rich territories of the Niger-Delta and subdue the minorities of the Federal Republic.

But we do still have some strongly Igbophillic voices there holding forte, though I fear they may be out numbered by the Edophilic ones that seem to be quite vociferous and vehement in their Igbophobic ways.
We can only count on Oshimili and Aniocha as it stands in Igbo speaking Delta North. ^^^^^^^^ Interesting phenomenon... |

Johnnyessence: A three-man syndicate who specialized in robbing passengers in the Itori area of Ogun State state has been arrested. . According to a report by Punchng, the suspects, Seun Ademosu, Segun Akinde and Kayode Sokunbi, usually drove around the community, looking for their victims. . The modus operandi of the gang after picking a victim was to stop on an isolated road, saying the vehicle had developed a fault or somone’s finger was stuck to the door. . The unsuspecting passenger would then be robbed of his valuables and pushed out. One Mrs. Kehinde Oluwaferanmi was robbed of N100,000 on October 12 after one of the robbers, Sokunbi, raised the alarm that his finger was stuck to the door. . The woman did not know they had removed her money in the bag. She reported to the ZIS. After investigation, Akinde and Sokunbi were arrested. . Their gang leader, Ademosu, 28, was later arrested after allegedly leading another gang to steal N1.4m from a cement dealer. The victim was reported to have collected the money from a customer in the Ifo area and was heading for a bank in Ewekoro. via: Punchng

Agriculture › Re: General Market/food Price ( weekly Update ) by Konquest: 12:48am On Nov 09, 2017 |
kagari: This is a thread born out of the need for a central knowledge of foodstuffs in different market of each state. I would be updating weekly with Utako market in abuja with time would switch to mile 12 in Lagos cause I believe that should be a more centralised national food market.
Would be updating prices every week preferably Fridays, but some prices could be updated once or twice a week depending on the price trend in the market
If you trade in foodstuffs, update your food prices here and also your market and state.
Thank you as you follow |
Crime › Re: Inside Dreaded Igwebuike Forest In Imo Where People Are Murdered And Buried by Konquest: 12:38am On Nov 09, 2017 |
DrGaius: YOU must be prepared before going into Igwebuike forest in Awarra, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, one of the chief priests in the area, Mr. Okoro Ogbuji, toldSouth-East Voice. Sometime ago, it was the story of a 63-year-old woman, one Mrs. Ogo Omeriji, said to have been kidnapped, murdered and buried in the said Igwebuike forest.
This was after the suspected kidnappers allegedly collected N500,000, as ransom. The ugly incident took place in December, 2015. About a year later, it was another tragic event, in which one Stanley Eluwa Ihechika, aged 24, a motorcyclist, was lured into the Igwebuike forest by suspected cult members, killed and buried in a shallow grave. His remains were exhumed in October, 2017.
Omeriji died in the hands of those suspected to be her nephews, a three-man kidnap syndicate, while Eluwa was killed by a suspected five-man gang, in which an 18-year-old boy, Bobo John, had been arrested by the Imo Police Command who led the Police team to Igwebuike forest, where they exhumed the carcass.
The forest is known by some villagers as a hideout for criminals, secret cult members and where unreported atrocities had been committed. A dangerous forest, only the brave, they say, can attempt to cross but not without expecting possible attacks. For some people, at about 06:30pm, villagers who have one thing or the other to do within the Igwebuike forest, would have to suspend their engagements for a safer time, for security reasons.
One of their reasons was that at night, they usually hear sounds of gunshots coming from the Igwebuike forest. Most worrisome was that the agrarian settlement, perhaps has been turned into a war zone by rival cult groups; a situation, which may have discouraged farmers from producing foods.
Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area is known for cultivation of cassava and production of garri. It is said to be at the top in garri production, among the 27 local government areas in Imo State. In fact, some describe Ohaji /Egbema as the food basket of Imo State.
Another worrying dimension as explained by some of the villagers, was that the cult groups measure their strength by the number of their opponents killed and buried in the Igwebuike forest. Many were of the opinion that some young people who had gone missing without trace, may have disappeared into the Igwebuike forest.
The story pointed out that, members of these cult groups would escape whenever they sensed any threats to their lives. As a result of that, anyone left at home on the fateful day would bear the brunt. “These boys are sadists, their utmost joy is to see the heads of their fellow human beings severed and their skulls used for drinking, only they can tell what type of drink,”one of the villagers who did not want his name mentioned toldSouth-East Voice.
Mr. Ogbuji, the chief priest told South east Voice that because some elders in the community were against their activities, some of them were being haunted for saying the truth. He said, “I am from same family with Stanley Eluwa who was murdered. I could remember that I had a problem with this secret cult members. It started when I paid them a visit and asked them questions on why they should kill their brothers and sisters in the name of cultism.
“I asked them why they would pursue us out of the village, something which we did not do to our forefathers; something we did not do as young people? Do you know that after advising them to stop the killings, the different cult groups started planning to kill me. They made several attempts but they did not succeed.
“Let me tell you, they also killed a chief priest from Obitte, who was advising them to stop the killing of their own brothers. The name of the man killed is Sunny. Because of all these evil things happening, before you come to this area, you get prepared.”
However, the story would not have been complete without the gallant efforts of the Imo Police Command led by the Commissioner, Mr. Chris Ezike. On his assumption of office, he promised to fight against cultism in the state through what he described as community policing. To achieve this, the commissioner declared war against activities of cultists in the state.
The commissioner said: “The peace and tranquility we have witnessed in the past two months can only be attributed to the high profile arrests and recoveries the command has made within the period under review. We will continue the all out offensive against criminals through intelligence-led raids, cordon and search, diligent investigation of arrested suspects and successful prosecution of cases.
“We shall continue to be more visible at black spots, strategic junctions, public places and commercial centers. We shall also pay special attention to general and specific security of Imolites from the diaspora who have returned home to enjoy the yuletide. The banks/financial houses shall also be our top priority.”
