Cybercrimes act now in force: FG issues strong warnings to internet users

The Federal Government has formally enacted the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act into full force, making all its provisions legally binding across the country.


The announcement serves as a strong warning to internet users, content creators, and digital platform administrators to acquaint themselves with the law and ensure strict compliance.


The Cybercrimes Act, which outlines several offenses related to digital conduct, is aimed at curbing criminal activity online, protecting national infrastructure, and ensuring the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s digital space.

Key Offenses and Penalties

Under the now-active Act, several offenses carry serious legal consequences, including imprisonment terms ranging from two years to life, depending on the severity of the crime.

Some of the major offenses outlined include:


Unauthorized Access to Devices (Section 3):
Gaining access to another person’s phone, computer, or digital device without their consent is a criminal offense.

Penalty: Up to 5 years imprisonment.

Tampering with Digital Data (Section 4):
Altering, deleting, or interfering with another person’s digital files or information without lawful authority is now punishable by law.



Penalty: Up to 5 years imprisonment.

Disclosure of Critical Infrastructure Information (Section 5):
Sharing classified or sensitive government or national infrastructure data with unauthorized individuals constitutes a grave offense.

Penalty: Up to 15 years imprisonment.

Recording Private Conversations (Section 10):
Recording conversations without proper authorization—even as a participant—is deemed a violation of privacy.


Publishing False or Misleading Information (Section 19):
Spreading fake news or deliberately deceptive content online is now a criminal act.

Penalty: Up to 2 years imprisonment.

Online Harassment and Abuse (Section 22):
Posting vulgar, offensive, or indecent content with the intent to embarrass or cause distress constitutes online abuse.

Penalty: Up to 2 years imprisonment.

Inciting Ethnic or Religious Hatred (Section 24):
Any online or offline act aimed at provoking ethnic, tribal, or religious hatred is categorized under domestic terrorism. Investment opportunities

Penalty: Life imprisonment.


Group Admins to Be Held Liable

The government also issued a stern warning to administrators of WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, Telegram channels, and other digital communities. According to the Act, admins can be held legally responsible if they knowingly allow the circulation of illegal or harmful content within their groups.

“Admins must actively moderate their platforms and enforce community guidelines. Ignorance or negligence will not be an acceptable defense under the law,” the statement noted.

Stay Informed, Stay Protected

As the digital landscape evolves, the Federal Government is urging all Nigerians to exercise responsibility and caution in their online engagements. Citizens are advised to verify the legality of their digital actions to avoid prosecution.

“Cyberlaw is not optional. It is now an enforceable framework with consequences. Every Nigerian, especially those active online, must be aware and comply accordingly,” the notice emphasized.

The government emphasized that ignorance of the law will not shield violators from penalties and encouraged the public to stay informed in order to remain legally protected.

The only person who can see is Datti! Look at the people you are in bed with, do you think they are prepared for a free and fair fight? Do you think they will line up behind Obi? Do people like Malami and ElRifai look like people willing to accept Obi as President or people who need the votes of his supporters?

Already as they speak they are lining up their delegates! Northern states traditionally have the highest No of delegates in any party primaries , is it Obi that will control them? Some one who hasn’t officially joined the party yet and did not do well in the North last time? Is it Kebbi with Malami, Kwara with Abdulahi, Osun with Aregbe, Benue with Mark, or Adamawa with Atiku whose delegates will vote for Obi? Look at the coloration of the alliance, which states can Obi get delegates from? Amaechi will do a delegates deal with Atiku, so will Aregbe!

Obi will not win the primaries. Even in a free and fair fight he won’t win the primaries against Atiku. By the time he is a candidate in the primaries, it means he has left LP since you can’t be a member of 2 parties. Once he loses the primaries, he is stuck and can’t leave to start searching for a new party without damaging his reputation, so he will be forced to take the VP slot. If he doesn’t play along,, it will be handed over to Amaechi. Obidients In the end they will be forced to vote for Atiku……coup completed!

Obi knows this, he also knows he needs the coalition and that is his dilema.

Get used to the idea that either way Obi is not becoming President!

Taiwanese government has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s successful State visit to the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia as a truly a landmark achievement in Nigeria diplomacy.

“We, the people and Government of Taiwan, wholeheartedly congratulate President Tinubu for his visions and concrete actions of extending Nigeria’s connection with the Caribbean Island state, just like Taiwan has made diplomatically with St. Lucia”, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, Taiwan’s Representative/ Head of Mission in Nigeria said in a latest statement.

In line with Nigeria’s moves, Liu noted that Taiwan and St. Lucia, as well as three other Caribbean Island nations – St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Haiti, have long established diplomatic relations with full-fledged Embassies setting in each other’s capitals.

The head of Taiwan mission in Nigeria further said that his country’s diplomatic presence of Embassies, together with Development and Technical Aid of medical, agricultural, women and youth empowering, trade and investment strengthening, sustainable development, have truly assisted St. Lucia as well as other Caribbean nations to grow well economically and socially.

Liu believed that during President Tinubu’s visit, he would have toured some facilities jointly developed by the Taiwanese government and St. Lucian authorities.

“ We’re proud to offer our helping hands that produce fruitful results, and we certainly welcome wholeheartedly that Nigeria will also be joining this humanitarian and economic collaborations in the Caribbean area.

I suffered from second hand embarrassment reading that letter because he keeps writing these letters and making it public, he also did same with Annie. St. Lucia wears 2 hats: it’s a member of CARICOM (Caribbean Community). And hosts the HQ of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

CARICOM is like a Caribbean AU.

OECS is a tighter union; one currency & a shared central bank. Much like ECOWAS, but much more integrated.

Tinubu’s visit kills two birds with one stone. It’s courting both these Caribbean blocs at once.

Why does this matter?

CARICOM states sit squarely within the U.S. trade orbit.

Many OECS & CARICOM countries already have existing strong U.S. financial & logistical ties and preferential trade access to US markets.

These are mighty useful platforms for Nigeria to plug into, by mainly leveraging on a structure in which it is the largest shareholder.

Enter Afreximbank!

This is Africa’s trade and export bank. It was once Africa only, but now it includes Caribbean nations as formal partners.

It has already begun funding Caribbean projects.

Nigeria is both a major shareholder and top beneficiary in it.

At the 2025 Afreximbank AGM in Abuja recently, African-Caribbean leaders okayed key initiatives: to expand PAPSS (Pan-African Payment & Settlement System) supporting local-currency payments across the Atlantic. Also support diaspora investments, & Afro-Caribbean trade integration.

The big picture!

This whole trip seems to plug Nigeria into the Caribbean grid; its U.S. links, cultural bridges, and trade frameworks, without having to build one from scratch.

That’s the real meaning of Tinubu’s visit. It’s admittedly a long game. But one that must start.

Of course there’ll still be lingering cynics, after all these.

I just pity them. They’ve have fallen inside a trap that affects ability to think or even dig deep.

For those who’ve read this far, I hope you find a niche to occupy in the opportunities that are likely to open up.

Nigeria can be terribly frustrating but each person owes it to her/himself to not become crippled by cynicism. It’s hard but doable. You should never allow it.

I followed the visit of the Nigerian President 'Bola Tinubu and it was done with CLEAR intentionality. St. Lucia is indeed the HQ of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECD) and a member of CARICOM which have direct business links with the United States through bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.

He indeed gave a very fantastic speech to the members of the St. Lucian Parliament and got a standing ovation at the end of the speech.
He ALSO proposed a visa waiver for all Caribbean nations by Nigeria while calling for them to reciprocate the gesture to Nigerians.


The deep level of trolling and IRRESPONSIBLE ethnic bigotry on this NL thread and Website threads since Tinubu's visit to St. Lucia shows once again that there are people actively working to destabilize Nigeria and her efforts simply because they want their own kinsman to be the President. It's time to ensure that those who are blatantly derailing threads and deliberately spreading massive disinformation online and offline to demarket those in political office are brought to justice for prosecution in the courts of law.

A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and a key member of the opposition coalition, Nasir El-Rufai, has said a new political party would be registered as a back-up for the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

El-Rufai said the new party would be registered as an alternative option to counter potential infiltration by the All Progressives Congress, APC, into the ADC.

The opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its platform on Wednesday.

However, El-Rufai said there is a tendency that the APC might instigate crisis within the ADC by inciting old members against the new leadership.

He disclosed this in an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa Service on Wednesday night.

“Those who refuse to join the APC face threats of investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), or Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

“The opposition parties’ alliance in the ADC is temporary, and we may register a new party as a second option, which we will move to should the ADC be instigated into crisis by the government,” the former Kaduna governor said.
