Education / Advise On This Please by kristein(m): 9:07pm On Aug 13, 2015
good evening nairalanders..
my pleasure of being here this evening, anyway I just want to make little inquiry that is bothering me..
I just got admission into one of the reputed federal university in nigeria to study banking and finance precisely..
I have been getting so many negative and discouraging impression from people around about my course:while some people say i'am restricted to only banking job some even said my course(banking and finance) is not that lucrative..this many thought is making me to reapply for jamb and go for accounting..
many people I have come across with would always say accountancy degree is preferable-that with accountancy degree you are fit into any organisation..
I even hear from a 300lev accountancy student in my school that accountancy is the one to three best lucrative courses in nigeria as at now, that banking cannot be compare with them interms of "demanding, lucrative, self employ and so on"..
please I need initiative experience mind to advise me on what to do(am talking about graduate that are job experience and know what the labour market demand),if it is to work harder and increase my CGPA then I think it would be a minor case because am a very hardworking, easily understanding type..
please mature mind should air their suggestion..thanks in advance

First of all congrats on your ICAN success. It is a very big achievement. Leave your options open as CBN is not the only good place to work. Start looking for work with your ICAN especially with the big 4 auditing companies even if it is a vac job but if you get full time change to part time studies. Not sure if you can transfer credits in Nigeria.. Oh the beauty of America. Or Try to take the Acca or CPA and if you pass, you can apply to places like McGladdery in the USA and they can bring you over

Good luck
sigh! i really really appreciate and welcome your advise.but there is one thing...

you ask me to apply for job like mcGladdery in the USA.i wish but dont have enough fund or are my permitted to apply on scholarship bases?if yes how?..

as for the Acca and CPA cant i find a desent job with my ICAN now with exception of ACCA and CPA?.waiting for your reply...
Investment / Experience Banker Need Your Advise On This by kristein(m): 8:59am On May 15, 2015
good morning fellow nairalanderz.
my name is christian,a banking and finance student of one of the most wanted prestigious uni in niger.-200 level to be precise!

i have a little challenge at now..currently i just finish my ican exam and fortunately i made all the papers. now i am chaterred even in my early undergraduate level(200 level banking and finance).

i have always dreamed of working as a banker in cbn,i made research before i initially embark for my ican exam and i was told for me to work there i need to have atleast an ican cert+a sound finance degree+first class-this got me wondering because according to them they said cbn bankers are intelligent people with first class holder and not even 2.1 can work there.

but now fortunately i passed my ican exam and i am planning to apply for the cbn recruitment after i obtain my first degree as for the first class i am sure i will come out with that because i am a first class product now in my 200 lev-4.6 gp to be precise.

please i need genuine banker to enlight me more on this cbn job prospect before i graduate to know if i have all it takes for me to work there or there is still more for me to do,perhaps i will be required to get my master degree first i will like to know.

God bless you as i await and view your replies!

Banking degree is not restrictive. It is as broad as majoring in finance. All you need is a foot hold to get in somewhere then you begin to broaden your scope by taking some professional exams either in areas like risk management ( operational, credit or financial)
thankz so much boss..i do really appreciate you alot..i am planning to sit for pe1 nov diet though..i really find your opinion useful.

God bless! grin

In the first place it does not make sense to spend so much time and energy in such arguement

Both of you are as qualified to work in the oil industry depending on the department and job function . While the accountant may be more qualified to do oil taxation. Costing etc, the banking guy will be more qualified to handle things like financial analysis, hedging, etc.
I remember when I used to work in the bank and we had engineers working as credit officers.
Here in the US for example chemists work in investment banks analyzing and following pharmaceutical companies
Do what you have passion for and let God do the rest. Good luck to you both
wow! i love this piece coming out from a sincere man..bro i do really appreciate.

but wait,is it that a finance holder of 1st degree fit into many organisation as assumed by you or is restricted to some industry?.

80% of people have met always emphasize that banking degree is just restricted to bank and no other company.
and please are you talking from experience?…thankz!

good day my fellow nairalanderz..
please i have a challenge about my course that got a fight argument with my counterpart discipline.
well, let me start by introducing my self...

my name is john,a student of banking and finance 200lev in nnamdi azikwe university,awka.nigeria.

just yesterday i had a big argument with an accounting student that almost got the whole roof shake and fell..and the argument was that" a bsc holder of banking and finance does not have an edge in the oil industry compare to accounting bsc counterpart"..
thus, the argument made got me infuriated and disgusted that i have to blame all to we nigerian that is so blind to see wat the future holds..

i mean how can you say banking 1st degree holder cant work in the oil industry except you have accountancy degree?..that a banking degree holder is only restricted to bank job and nothing else.

now my question is:how is banking and finance difference to an accountant? that a banking degree holder cant work in an oil industry..after all we both study statistics, account and the likes.and do you know what it takes to be a finance degree holder that so many organisation seek to have..

accountancy is overrated in nigeria due to their professionalism, and besides any one can become an accountant with just having an ican certificate..

please nairalanders,i want your view about this..experience accountant and banker in the nigeria industry should please air their view on this issue..i need to know the fountain/origin of this professions to know what to do before i graduate..

please experience accountant i need your view..thankz!

good day my fellow nairalander..i am totally(let me use that word)confuse this time around..

let me first introduce my self that i'm a diploma student accountancy in federal university, nnamdi azikwe university..due to the pressure from my seniors i wrote this year jamb but fortunately for me i scored 240 in my jamb utme..now i'm confuse at the same time scared of putting in for unizik because of the competition in the school..

i'm intending to put in for uniben(banking and finance) in leu of unizik, but dnt know if uniben is even more competitive than unizik..
again i will like someone experience enough to give me advise the best and recognizable institution btw uniben and unizik(i mean the best schools that most top companies come in for recruitment of fresh graduate every year),

pls as i said earlier am so confuse but need an advise from u guys, dont wana loose this year admission especially with this my kind of jamb score which is not easy to get this days..if uniben is more recognizable for employment opportunities in labour market than unizik i'll lyk to know,or if it is the vice-versa i'll also love to know..

i shall await ur good response and advise

Education / Ten Type Of Jambites You Will Mostly Find by kristein(m): 11:35pm On Jan 26, 2015
@tosyne2much i prolly been watching you gaining access to nairaland popularity..well,i must say kudos to yah, yes,i say"kudos" bro.but my prowess is found on the education section unlike you who have more clue on romance section.

here,i'll highlight to yah'al about the ten type of jambite you mostly found in your arena.

1 The Guru's-
how i wish i could belong to this group.they never suffered from admission" complexity"because,of their talent right from their secondary school till infinity.

2 The Dream Achiever-
finally,i fall into this group.i love this group because they never felt deterred by any negative comment their receiving from their peers, friends, relatives e.t.c.if you will permit me to have a flashback on while i was still struggling for admission.my 1st attempt of writing jamb was not so bad.but i was finally given another course-industrial relation instead of accountancy.i never accepted it,i received so many discouragement from my friends,,but i am resistable..that made me to stick to my dream course..by God's grace i finally got it.
so if you know your dream never give up by any negative discouragement from your friends..it do help on a long-run.

3 The Friends Imitator-
i call this people"follow-follow".they dont have goal neither do they have a dream..they are always imitating whatever their friends have in mind of doing or becoming.

4 The Clueless Enthusiast-
funny to me how this people got admitted..they are always CLUELESS and NAIVE about everything interms of education, simply because they hear people hyping education.so they simply wana belong, but they are entirely naive.i wonder if is by force to go to school self.where there are so many things to do with their life and earn good money like tailor-you will wonder how much this people make a month, especially during season period, that time you will see them bragging-na'em say make u no sabi sow cloth? shuuu!,,hairdresser-no further comment, because i believe you all have eyes and can see yourself how much they make in your vicinity per-month.e.t.c.

5 The Parents Pressuree-
i taught about the particular name that will suit this kind but finally come to conclude of calling them"pressuree"..while their parent are pressurer.you all are well familiar with this people.their parent always wanted them to study medicine and answer"doctor"..even though they(the pressuree)have the dream of studying agriculture and becoming a successful farmer-who plant crops and rear animal for sale..i have a friend who always wanted to study education course inorder to be a teacher as his dream.but due to the pressure from his parent that they wanted him to study medicine, made his admission delayed for good 5 years at home-that's quite long.even later not getting the medicine course inventually.

6 The Hopeless-
well,i feel for this set of people whenever,i heard they have not got admitted, despite their humility nature..they are always hopeless and expect the least/worst course to be given but no way.i have this feeling that these set of people are suffering from"the padlock they have use to lock their destiny in the village".the only way out is to be prayerful.

7 The Gullible-
these ones never have the clue about basic information to get admission..they always cry for 419 victimization.they get duped right from their process of jamb by those online fraudsters till their process of university admission by same mysterious online fraudsters..they never learn even though they have been victimized.

8 The Ajebutters-
"the lucky ones".even though they got an un-attractive jamb and pume mark, their fathers affluence will always make it out for them.e.g lectures e.t.c.

9 The Ephemeron-
maybe due to poor/lack of sponsorship.they never finish their education-they are always termed as"school drop-out".

10 The Independent-
"they are the less privilege ones"they are working at the same time going to school...i wonder the kind of massive workload it will cause them.

that's all..which one do you belong to?
