Dr. Stella Okotie, a staff of the University of Benin, was on Tuesday sent to early grave when a commercial bus driver running away from police extortion rammed into her.

CAMPUS GIST reports that the incident happened in Benin City at about 6:30pm along the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway, close to the UNIBEN main gate.

The deceased was until her demise, a lecturer at the UNIBEN faculty of Education. Aside Okotie, one person was said to have also been killed with another sustaining some injuries.

The victims were killed while a commercial bus driver was running away from the police officers who had earlier flagged his vehicle down, demanding N100 bribe.

One of the officers was said to have jumped into the moving bus and engaged in a physical struggle with the bus driver, dragging the steering wheel in the process.

According to an eyewitness, the late UNIBEN staff was standing at the walkway alongside her husband, Dr. Williams Okotie, also a staff of UNIBEN and her son when the bus hit her and their stationery UNIBEN water supply van.

“The police officers were pursuing a commercial bus in quest for money leading to a physical struggle between one of the officers and driver of the vehicle,” he told CAMPUS GIST.

“While the police was struggling the steering wheel with the driver, the bus ram into Dr. Okotie who was standing on the walk way just by the side of her vehicle killing her on the spot.”

Following the incident, the police officers fled the scene leaving behind one of their colleague who was beaten to pulp and almost left for dead by angry mob but for the quick intervention of a woman believed to be his wife.

Consequently, residents and passersby barricaded the ever-busy new Lagos road right in front of the UNIBEN Ugbowo main gate, causing heavy traffic gridlock for hours.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor could not be reached for comments. The university management is yet to issue a statement as at the time of filing this report.

In response to incident, the UNIBEN medical students are embarking on a solidarity protest on Wednesday (today) against the killing of the mother of their former colleague.

A statement issued by Comr. Goodluck Eghosa Osemwenkhae, Director of Information, Media and Publicity, on behalf of the union, said the protest would cover the police headquarters and the Edo state government house.

First of all, I am against cultism like you can see in many of my posts here. But I would not include the Pyrates Confraternity in this menace. The thing is that fraternities are in many tertiary institutions in the world, especially in the United States. Almost all presidents of the US belonged to a fraternity of the other. These fraternities/sororities usually help to promote and uplift their members as well as serve as an organization for people to belong. You must have heard of the skull and bones fraternity in Yale university that they have done a movie about. I know this was what the PC was all about to become an elite fraternity but the African mentality of members seeing themselves superior than others, the initiation of violence into affairs and the breakout of Buccaneers that led to supremacy battles was what tainted the PC. The best thing they could do is to be inactive in the university environment for awhile. I have two friends who are lawyers and active in PC, and I can tell you that that forced bamming of John into PC is illegal in their morals and if John reported the issue to top PC members, those guys behind the bamming would be excommunicated. Africans like to spoil everything including fraternity. Say this and that about PC. But at least for the past 2 decades we have not heard of silly supremacy killings involving the Pyrates confraternity. As in they welcome membership to people in their 50s till now.
But still I would not support membership into the Pyrates Confraternity. Fact is that many members of PC were once members of other violent confraternities. One Axeguy I know once told me that he's looking for a connection to join PC at least it would clean him of the mess of the past. Confraternities see PC as very prestigious that one of the founding members of the NBM that became a police commisioner once lied in a newspaper interview that he was part of the PC. So you willing to join should still have it in mind that you might be finding yourself in the confraternity mess of the African scenario and some fellow members having scuffle with you may actually use violence to achieve their aims. Ruggedity is still part of their school of thought.

That police commisioner you talked about ended up as a Deputy Inspector general of police. He claimed he is now a pastor, he was in a church confessing and rolling on the ground instead of saying the truth about the violent NBM cult group he founded which has taken many youthful souls, he downplayed the havoc he unleashed on the society by claiming he was a member of Pyrates confraternity (PC).

After my first doctorate degree which I did abroad, I presented an extract of my thesis during a professional conference in Nigeria. After the presentation, I met my former lecturer at undergraduate level at that conference during tea break.

She was really keen on my thesis extract presentation and offered that we work together and develop it further. That was where my journey to my second doctorate started. I told her 'Prof Ma, if you won't supervise me, I'm not applying for postgraduate studies in any local university'. She assured me, that I should go ahead and apply, she was a respected senior faculty member and I knew she would help see it through since I had all the pre-requisites.

Even after applying and passing the interview, my admission letter came out with a different supervisor in another specialty within the same department, it was a glaring mistake but she encouraged me to fill a 'change of supervisor' form and took it herself to the other lecturer for signature and 'release of student'.

That's a supervisor that will climb mountains for her students and they are very rare. Every student wants them but not all can have them. You can only find one per faculty. In some faculties, you'll find none.

At post-graduate level, you can even start discussing with a potential supervisor before applying for PG studies. It is done all over the world. I did it before gaining my foreign and local doctorate certifications.

That won't even work. One of the founding members of the NBM aka AXEMEN was Marvel Akpoyibo, he was a law student in UNIBEN when him and others founded the cult group.
