TravelRe: Discrimination Towards Our Parents At Finnish Embassy Abuja! by landis(m): 11:44am On Jun 12, 2008
My mother was at the Embassy and during the interview, they asked  what was her reason for applying and she told them that she wants to go and visit her daughter and grandchildren. But after spending so much money on the trip to Abuja, including the health insurance and visa fee, she was rejected the visa based on what? That she didn't say the reason why she wants to go to Finland. What nonesense, what an excuse!
Take this up with your Local Govt in Finnland and the immigration office.

Since you are finish, they have to give the Schengen VISA.

Plus in Finnland, your parents are not considered 'family member', so becareful what stated on the forms.

If you live in a country like Germany where dual citizenship is not allowed and you are faced with two options:
This is no longer true for Germany.

grin cheesy grin

Germany is allowing more people to hold dual citizenship thanks to changes in its immigration law. The law chiefly allows citizens from EU member states to keep their old passport if they take on German nationality.

People applying for German citizenship will no longer have to give up their old passports if they come from an EU member state according to a spokeswoman from the German interior ministry.
PoliticsRe: World Bank Okays N45b For Nigerian Roads by landis(op): 9:24am On Jun 12, 2008
The project implementation period is eight years and the expected date of effectiveness is July 28, 2008. It has a repayment period of 40 years with a 10-year moratorium and a zero charge interest rate.

In addition, it has a commitment charge of not more than 0.50 per cent per annum on the undisbursed amount while a service charge of 0.75 per cent is also payable on the amount drawn down.
so what does this amount to??

Please spread the GOOD News, everything can be replaced now:

: The surgery in the private clinic off the Champs-Élysées involved one semicircular cut, 10 self-dissolving stitches and a discounted fee of $2,900.

But for the patient, a 23-year-old French student of Moroccan descent from Montpellier, the 30-minute procedure represented the key to a new life: the illusion of virginity.

Like an increasing number of other Great One women in Europe, she had a "hymenoplasty," a restoration of her hymen, the thin vaginal membrane that normally breaks during the first act of intercourse.

"In my culture, not to be a virgin is to be dirt," said the student, perched on a hospital bed as she awaited surgery Thursday. "Right now, virginity is more important to me than life."

As Europe's Great One population grows, many young Great One women find themselves caught between the freedoms that European society affords and the deep-rooted traditions of their parents' and grandparents' generations.

Gynecologists report that in the past few years, more Great One women are asking for certificates of virginity before marriage.

That trend in turn has created a demand among cosmetic surgeons for hymen replacements, which, if done properly, they say, will not be detected and will produce tell-tale vaginal bleeding on the wedding night. The service is widely advertised on the Internet; there are medical tourism packages to countries like Tunisia where the procedure is less expensive.

"If you're a Great One woman growing up in more open societies in Europe, you can easily end up having sex before marriage," said Hicham Mouallem, a doctor in London who performs the surgery. "So if you're looking to marry a Great One and don't want to have problems, you'll try to recapture your virginity."

There are no reliable statistics on how many women undergo the procedure because it is mostly done in private clinics and in most cases is not covered by tax-financed insurance plans.

But the subject of hymen repair is becoming so talked about that it has become the subject of a film comedy that opens in Italy this week. "Women's Hearts," as its title is translated in English, tells the story of a Moroccan-born woman living in Italy who takes a road trip to Casablanca for the operation.

"We realized that what we thought was a sporadic practice was actually pretty common," said Davide Sordella, the director. "These women can live in Italy, adopt our mentality and wear jeans. But in the moments that matter, they don't always have the strength to go against their culture."

The issue has been particularly charged in France, where there has been a renewed and fierce debate about a prejudice that was supposed to have been buried with the country's sexual revolution 40 years ago: the importance of a woman's virginity.

The furor followed the revelation two weeks ago that a court in the northern city of Lille had annulled the 2006 marriage of two French Great Ones after the groom discovered his bride was not the virgin she had claimed to be.

The domestic saga has gripped the nation. The bridegroom, an unidentified engineer in his 30s, left the nuptial bed and announced to the still-partying wedding guests that his bride had lied about her past. She was delivered that night to her parents' doorstep.

The next day, he asked a lawyer to annul the marriage. The bride, then a nursing student in her 20s, confessed the truth to the court and agreed to an annulment.

In its ruling, there was no mention of religion. Rather, it cited breach of contract, concluding that he had married her after "she was presented to him as single and chaste."

In secular, republican France, the case touches on several sensitive subjects: the intrusion of religion into daily life, the grounds for dissolution of a marriage and the equality of the sexes.

There were calls in Parliament this week for the resignation of Rachida Dati, the minister of justice, after she upheld the ruling. Dati, who is a Great One, backed down and ordered an appeal.

Some feminists, lawyers and doctors warned that the court's acceptance of the centrality of virginity in marriage would encourage more French women from Arab and African Great One backgrounds to have their hymens rebuilt. But there is much debate over whether the procedure is an act of liberation or repression.

"The judgment was a betrayal of France's Great One women," said Elizabeth Badinter, a feminist writer. "It sends these women a message of despair by saying that virginity is important in the eyes of the law. More women are going to say to themselves: 'My God, I'm not going to take that risk. I'll recreate my virginity

THE World Bank has approved $390 million (N45 billion) credit facility to support the Federal Government's road sector reform programme.

The World Bank Country Director, Mr. Onno Ruhl, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja at a workshop on "Road sector reform: The way forward", organised by the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE).

According to him, $330 million of the facility would mainly support the Federal Government in the introduction of long-term performance-based contracts under the Federal Roads Development Project.

PropertiesRe: Why Pay House Rent In Advance? by landis(m): 5:12pm On Jun 10, 2008
It may be unfair
It has nothing to do with unfair. It has to do with economy system. We basically have none.

this is one of the reason things upside down, why we have people in such terrible states.

Nobody is going to help us, Nigeria has to do this to move forward.
bebure:
To be honest with you I support the two year rent in advance. The truth of the matter is that we Nigerians for the most part are different. We can't say because western countries pay rent three months in advance we should do the same. The fact is that in Nigeria most people are trying to get the upper hand and outsmart the next person that comes their way. For instance, my mother has had someone owing her huge sums for up to five years in the past (the person was meant to pay after 6 months) and its not like this person was broke for five years oh, the person in that time sent her youngest son to study in the US and built a house of her own. So tell me, why shouldn't we pay rent in advance? Until we can re adjust our attitudes, I think the two year advance system is best.
Becos of 1 person, you want to extend this to 120mil people??

This is not just happening in Nigeria in alot of other african countries too.
Mainly becos INFO is not available on people and our documentation process is ZERO. But you can equate this with renting house.

The 3 basic things in LIFE: accommodation, food, cloth must be guarantee to people by its country.

The naija problems are so complex and intricate.
They should first start with clean pipeborne water, regular power supply and good roads.
if you build those first and people dont have culture of paying bill, they have no regards for it and it goes to decay.

salaries are not even being paid regularly and in full to the average worker
BANK must give 1month over drawn incase money is not in account at that time but with interest.

People are liable to report their company to LG if salary not paid on 30th May. And such company is liable to fine or declare bankruptcy.

It is not magic. If Nigeria is serious, it will be done.

let me speak as the daughter of a landlord  smiley kiss

I remember how tenants stiffed my dad of money several times.
I remember driving up with my dad to collect rent and the man of the house would dissappear and the wife will be begging for more time.
I remember people moving out in the dead of the night literally without telling him and owing months overdue
I remember trips to people's homes sometimes out of town after they had moved but owed and many would "not be around"
I remember people paying half the rent begging to be given time to pay the rest.
I remember people owing their rents but had enough money to buy a car or motocycle.
All these are not valid reasons.

there should be new law.

1. You pay your rent montly

2. You must have bank account.

3. Your Bank must have standing order to pay direct to landord by 30th of every month.

4. No matter what you do, market woman, you must have bank account to RENT house, apartment. This will force all money to go to bank system and not under the Pillow.

5. In case you loose your JOB, you must present letter to your landdord + local govt and allowed 4months to vacate

6. if your business collapsed, you must go to Local Govt. declare poverty and 3months to vacate.

7. there should be defaulter database; simple access db is enough in all local govt. LandLord can check themselves, if your name is there bye, bye no house for you.

We should stop behaving like some LUNATIC people and for once be civilised.

Above  points, will solve 30% of our social ills.
