The fathom removal of oil-subsidy is just a ploy to increase the price of petrol. Reason? GEJ wants his friends - the CABAL to continue making billions from fuel-importation, but wants to shift the burden from the neck of his goverment unto the neck of the poor masses already overburdend through goverment corruption. Please anyone who has even a single bone of sincerityin his/her body, please ask yourself & answer this pertinent question: Why can't this fuel subsidy be removed through making(by repairs) our refiniries to start working & functioning at full capacity? WHY CAN'T THIS OIL-SUBSIDY BE REMOVED BY MAKING (BY REPAIRS) OUR REFINIRIES TO START WORKING AND FUNCTIONING AT FULL CAPACITY? In my own opinion, the answer to this pertinent question(also big puzzle) is this: if the refinries start working as they should, the need to make any trillions availabe for oil-subsidy will vanish. But that's not the only thing that will vanish. The very lucrative billions-of-dollars-profit-making- business of fuel-importation will automatically grind to a halt since Nigeria will have all the fuel it needs produced loaclly through our refiniries, hence no need for importation. So because fuel-importation must continue at all cost, because "chopulation" must continue at all cost for the BIG BOYS of PDP and PDP associates, the option to be taken is for price of fuel to be inceased instead of the best option (best both in short & long terms) of repairing our refiniries. But this is just my humble opinion. Please can we have yours. Kindly educate us. |
Reps reaffirm opposition to fuel subsidy removal December 1, 2011 at 4:02 am by Daily Post Staff The House of Representatives has restated its determination not to let Nigerians down on the proposed removal of subsidy from petroleum products by the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Zakari Mohammed, said Nigerians should have faith in the House on the matter, adding that the President must present it to the National Assembly. Mohammed addressed reporters at an interactive session with members of the House. He said the President would have to explain to Nigerians details of what is expended on fuel subsidy as against what was appropriated by the National Assembly. Mohammed said: “The position of the House is that we don’t even know the amount spent on fuel subsidy. All oil producing countries in the world subsidise and we said if last year we spent half a trillion, this year we are talking about over a trillion, there is a problem somewhere. “We are saying: where is this money going? We told Mr President at the last meeting we had with him to go after the cabal. ‘You are empowered; if it is on that, we are supporting you to unravel the economic saboteurs’. “We are still on that page. Until we are convinced, we will not do anything to betray the confidence of the people. We have closed this matter for a while. We are on it and we have not concluded on it. What we are saying is that the appropriate government agency, right from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and others, should give us information.” |
Abagworo:Very true; Ben Bruce is indeed what Bayelsa needs. But wonder why he wanted to become governoe through PDP since his mindset to make sure the "people's money is spent for the good the people" is totally at variance with what obtains in PDP. 'wonder what made to think he has a chance of getting the ticket in the first place at all. And now that he been cast aside by the machinery of the PDP that would not want a similar "OKOROCHA tight-fisted" goverment that will not favour "chops-for-all" for the boys to happen in Bayelsa, if Ben Bruce really wants to help Bayelsans, why can't he go and contest under CPC or APGA; or isby force he must be a PDP governor. By the way, I noticed the SilverBird morning-show has stopped his pro-goverment suppoting tendencies during interviews that are political in nature, |
firstly, let me say the minister's assertion is true. Infact it's not just about devaluation. Everything that is wrong with Nigeria today started during the administration of GEJ's adopted father. He practically legalised and laid the foundation for Corruption as we see it today. But having said this, I really don't see the point of the minister bringing that fact up now. It's a lame excuse for non-performance of today's goverment; that is GEJ's goverment. |
Only an EFFCC that is not under the control of the President and the executive can fight corruption. there are already concerns from some quarters and bodies that Lamorede is "Politcal Exposed Person" and freind to many "Politcal Exposed Persons". Move along people; there is nothing here; the War against corruption is dead for now. In GEJ's present goverment, corruption is having a rosy air-conditioned, jacuzzi, 7-star residential accomodation. Only an ignorant or mischief maker will say this is not so, |
Please lets forget about projects for now. Roads are much simpler to guage what I'm talking about. Al least everyone can see that. The roads in these places I mentioned have needed to be done like 2 yrs ago. When Fashola came to Alimosho wish is the biggest LG in Lagos, to campeign for 2nd term, he said his plain sight of everyone, that his plan is to start work on this places immediately after 2nd term. Well there is no sign of anthing. These are roads that once it rains, there is problem. Why d neglect of this areas. Then the way you are responding, going gaga at any form of critism of Fashola is give-away. Anyone with ituition will know u are a goverment agent. U dont even want to reason with people or meet them halfway. fashola is all round best and that's it. I wish u d best in your PR job. By the way, does anyone know why all these goverment PR men are invading Nairaland? |
first of all let me say it's obvoius Eko-ile is another BEAF, but ds time working for Fashole someway, somehow; not GEJ. I've said this before and I'll say it again: Fashola is an elitist governor. I've known this for long and in this his 2nd term, the fact is becoming very conspicous. Only an mischeavous person will argue otherwise. The lady who said Fashola is beatifying one-side of Lagos while abandoning the rest is so-too right. Many roads in posh have been rehabillated and sevarl rehabillated and re-worked up to even three times. But the same Fashola has completely abandoned the arears where you don't have the elitist-rich upper class dwelling. From Ikotun to Egbe, Ejigbo-Isolo, Agege, Ipaja, Iseri-Jakande Road etc, these roads are in terrible conditions. He has also attended to the mainstream roads that rich people flying into Lagos will see and are likely to ply. Then the corruption & cornering of state resources going in Lagos is phenomenal . then take a look at the unbelievable and rediculous hike in LASU fees which Fashola is justifying and taking a hard posture on. Exactly what's on his mind: does he wants LASU to be only for the rich. and concerning the buildings, the state can erect estate in which civil servants and people earning like a 100k a month can afford to own through a appropriate scheme. The tuth is, the state is only inerested in luxury flats because they know thats where they will make a lot of money, both officially and much more unofficially by cutting so many delas, aquiring alloacations for themselves and reselling to rich people who are ready to pay millions for them, |
PointB: executinal:I just marvel at you guys logic and arguement sometimes. All over the world, in advanced countires, it'a a well known and established fact that it is Institution that matters and not individual. Your mentioning of some few names does not change that fact. Bodies like INEC and EFCC (NAFDAC does not fit into the picture) are not under the control of the President in civilised democracies all over the world. Go and find out. The RIBADU which you are talking about, can kindly please tell me what happened to him under the Yaradua Presidency, when his determination to do his job began to cross the interest of some PDP politicians and goverment officials? I rest my case?. |
This news is completely false. We all know the intent of this poster for making this post. I advise Nairalanders to shun every single post of this person and he will fade into obscurity. Please people try and do this. |
The contents of this article is exactly the opposite of the title the poster has given it. Talk about abilty to comprehend?. |
If Ben Bruce was not another bootlicker of Goverment in power, he would have been able to see beyond his nose, and would not have contested on the platform of PDP. If he had contested on the platform of APGA, I believe he would win, even despite all PDP,s attemp to rig. You can see from the little campeign he did so far that has a goodwill similar to the one Okorocha has in Imo. People want a geniuie change and would have voted for him massisvely. Maybe now all the pro-goverment tendencies on Silverbird morning shows will stop. |
The President has no business in appointing the chairperson EFCC or any anti-corruption body for that matter. Nothing is gatering any steam. EFCC is failing becusae it's under the tight control of the President and the PDP machinery. It will continue to fail as long the status-quo remains. |
Kobojunkie:If only these were true. The truth is this: the prosperity and opulence and way of life of the Tradional rulers/Emirate, for the first time feels threatend by the Almajiri system via the activities of Boko-Haram - because having being so dehumanised, life is worthless for them, they are an easy prey to bainswashing and an endless supply of suecide bombers for Group, to be used against anyone. There os nothing more dangerouse than a man who is ready to die; who has nothing worth living for. Are the Traditional Rulers after decades of existence of the system suddenly realizing that it is evil, very evil and has ruining lives of genrations of youths. These elders who are custodian of theor own people. They are supposed to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. It's interesting to note that they yet don't see anything wrong when this same people burn churches and kill christians. So don't get exited. These rulers are only inerested in protecting their own asses. The only love they have is for thmselves, not Nigeria, and certainly not the the disavantaged and dehumanized Almajiri youth. Kilode?!:Exactly my point. |
egift:You beat me to it. Exactly what I wanted to poit out. I'm sure everything will stll link back to PDP. I hope those brainwahed ignoramus shouting Ayatollah Buhari will shut up now and have a rethink. |
I think Fashola is an Elitist governor. This coud not be percieved so much before because Lagos had had it so bad in governance. But it's clear to me. If you for instance analyse the way/logic by Fashola is "doing" Lagos roads, you will see he's concentating on roads in elitist neigbourhoods (some have been done up to three times) while roads in arear like Ikotun, Isolo, Ipaja, Agege, Iseri have been COMPLETELY ABANDONED, |
Further more, the headline below and its contents expresses clearly the opinion of General Buhari on Fuel Subsidy and Fuel Subsidy Removal Fuel Subsidy Inflames Jonathan, Buhari Row Isah Ramat's picture Fri, 11/11/2011 - 12:27am | SHUAIB SHUAIB , BLESSING ANARO , and STANLEY ORONSAYE Cover Stories News Although Buhari is in the opposition, he does not politicise the issue of fuel subsidy because he knows the country will benefit from it. It is strange that those who should know better have turned to criticising government and are ever waiting at every turn to vilify whatever it is doing -- JONATHAN Most of what they call subsidy is the cause of corruption. When the product gets to Nigeria, they allow it to stay at the ports for 14 days so that they can pay demurrage. It stays at the jetty where charges are paid -- BUHARI President Goodluck Jonathan and the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday expressed divergent views over the proposal of the federal government to withdraw the petroleum subsidy in January, 2012. Jonathan and the former Head of State spoke at separate functions in Abuja. First to fire the first salvo was the president who used the forum of the 17th Nigerian Economic Summit, organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) to inform the audience that unlike other opposition leaders, Buhari had backed the subsidy removal. Jonathan also lambasted those who for their selfish interest were politicising what he said was a good policy that would benefit Nigerians in the long run. The president said: “Although Buhari is in the opposition, he does not politicise the issue of fuel subsidy because he knows the country will benefit from it. It is strange that those who should know better have turned to criticising government and are ever waiting at every turn to vilify whatever it is doing. “If the fuel subsidy is not removed now, Nigeria will begin to import petroleum products from Ghana, Chad, and Niger, among other countries in the next 10 years.” According to Jonathan, those criticising the decision to remove the subsidy are out to misinform the Nigerian masses, saying that, “It (fuel subsidy removal) is the best thing that will happen to the country”. In a report submitted to the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Appropriation and Finance, investigating the management of Petroleum Support Fund (PSF), otherwise known as fuel subsidy recently, the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) disclosed that the federal government spent N3.7 trillion on fuel subsidy between 2006 and this year. Buhari, who served the country as federal commissioner of petroleum and natural resources during the military regime of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was said to have stated that fuel subsidy had been an opportunity through which those controlling the country have been stealing resources out of the country’s coffers. President Jonathan said whatever he is doing now is not for his person, but for the good of the country tomorrow. In that vein, Shamsudeen Usman, minister of national planning said the federal government has already sent a bill on continuity to the National Assembly for consideration. According to him, growth is all about continuity and consistency, without which there would always be policy summersault. He said a situation like that will scare away investors. If the bill passes through the National Assembly, whatever policies (particularly the issue of the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) put into place would not be changed by future government without regard to law. But Buhari has faulted the claim of Jonathan, saying that he has never supported the plan to remove the fuel subsidy on the grounds that there is no subsidy in the first place. Contradicting the position of Jonathan who commended him for backing the removal of the subsidy, Buhari said the president quoted him out of context by suggesting he was in support of the removal of the subsidy. Speaking through his spokesman, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, Buhari said what he meant was that the existence of the subsidy was a scam and an avenue for marketers and government officials involved in the importation of petroleum products to corruptly enrich themselves. Acknowledging that Buhari’s position had been completely misrepresented by the president, Odumakin said, “Gen Buhari does not support the fuel subsidy removal. All that he said was that there was no subsidy and the government should fix the refineries and stop the importation of petroleum products.” He said: “Most of what they call subsidy is the cause of corruption. When the product gets to Nigeria, they allow it to stay at the ports for 14 days so that they can pay demurrage. It stays at the jetty where charges are paid. “Government should build new refineries, fix existing ones and should not be involved in the importation of petroleum products. And if the products should be imported, it should be left strictly to the oil marketers.” leadership.ng/nga/articles/8085/2011/11/11/fuel_subsidy_inflames_jonathan_buhari_row.html |
Fuel subsidy removal a time bomb –Odumakin Written by newsadmin on November 3, 2011 in Politics - No comments •Odumakin Pro-democracy activist and Spokesperson for General Muhammadu Buhari, Presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in April elections, YINKA ODUMAKIN in this interview with Asst. Politics Editor, DANIEL KANU, speaks on the planned removal of oil subsidy, Sovereign Wealth Fund, President Goodluck Jonathan’s performance so far, among other issues. Excerpts: The recently held local government election in Lagos State saw opposition political parties crying foul. How would you react on the exercise? My involvement in that election came when I got calls from CPC members in Agege local government, who were complaining that they won two wards where results were issued to them but that at the local government level where the final results were supposed to be collated LASIEC announced the wards won by the ACN and refused to announce the wards where they won. Their apprehension became so serious because there were reports of results being changed in different areas. Well, I advised them to go to the local government first to find out what was really happening. They mobilsed and went to the local government and while they were there they called me on phone and I was hearing sirens at the background. They told me that the local government chairman had called in the police with the allegation that the CPC people came with weapons to burn down the place but when the police came and saw that the people were not armed in anyway, but were mere protesters, they appealed to them. The police looked at the result and said it was difficult for anybody to change it. We also got the media involved. So by the time the final result was announced those two wards were announced in favour of the CPC. But on the whole some of the things that worry me in that election are as follows: it was reported in the media that the national leader of the ACN went to the polling booth without voter’s card and he was allowed to vote. That was not good but I learnt that other people who have also lost heir cards were allowed to vote. But if the law says that you need to present your voters card before you vote, why change that rule at the middle of the game. That was not neat and tidy for me and I have issues with that. Secondly I am surprised that a former chief judge of the state would conduct an election, announce results after 48 hours and about 10 days after the election we still don’t have figures of what candidates or parties scored. They just announced that ACN or PDP had won this and this seat without saying that in this place this was what they scored and they have been sworn in. That also says a lot about the election and electoral misbehaviour in the country. I am also aware of the loud protest by the PDP that they won in some places but that their victory was denied them. That is bad enough but also I think this is what the PDP serves nationally. Justice Adeyinka said those that are aggrieved should go to court I said this is also the language of the PDP. Once they rig election, they will tell you to go to court because they know they are in charge of the Judiciary. An interesting thing I read was Senator Musliu Obanikoro saying that he does not have confidence in the Lagos judiciary to give judgement in this matter because the judiciary is in the pocket of the ruling party in the state. That says a lot about our failing institutions, which means that because the PDP controls a larger space it manipulates our institutions, electoral institutions and the judiciary institutions to suit its whims. If what the PDP is saying in Lagos is also true, it means that in the small space that the ACN is controlling, ACN also does what the PDP does at the larger space. So it means that if the ACN has the chances that the PDP has it will still do the same thing, and that is worrisome. It shows the immaturity of the Nigerian political class and its inability to play by the rules. They will only shout foul when they are hit. What is your take on the planned removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government? Well I think it is the greatest fraud of the century for anybody to be talking about the removal of subsidy; talking about the landing cost in Nigeria as if it is no longer in this Nigeria where we used to have four functioning refineries, which were operating at full capacity that we had enough fuel for our domestic consumption. We were even exporting refined petroleum products to other countries. What has happened over the years that today we are just talking about landing cost? When they are talking about landing cost, it’s a big fraud. Now this is what happens and we are challenging them to controvert it. Those who import fuel and those who are in government have colluded with a cabal to rob the Nigerian people blind. Their agents have sabotaged our refineries so that the billionaires they have created through fuel importation will continue to have their game. We know those who were washing cloths three years ago and today they are billionaires because they have exclusive rights to import fuel into the country. When election comes they bring out billions to fund the elections then when those people they have sponsored with the funds win they will now put them on their economic team and these are people who do not have any idea on how the economy should function. Now how do they make their money? Fuel importation should be by private people but it is the government that does the circulation. The Minister of Petroleum and the President are the ones who know where they are importing fuel from and how much the fuel will cost. When the fuel lands here deliberately they will allow it to stay in the ports for 14 days and then they start paying demurrage of $10, 000 per day, which will be part of the landing cost and this is after the fuel has landed. Then they now move the fuel after the 14 days from the ports to private jetty where they will pay other outrageous charges before they now allow the marketers to load. If they bring 100litres for example the marketers may load about 70 litres, the remaining 30 litres are now what are calculated upon which the whole landing cost is on the 70 they have given out to the marketers for the price of 100. It’s all this fraud they computed and called fuel subsidy and that is what they are saying they want to remove. The only thing that should be removed is supposed to be the lack of accountability and the corruption. It is the greatest scam of the century. They have also come up with another argument that they are going to remove fuel subsidy and push the money to some eminent Nigerians to manage. If the government cannot manage proceeds from oil subsidy and now wants some eminent Nigerians to manage it, so why not put those eminent Nigerians to government or put government in the hands of these eminent Nigerians? It means that those in government are not eminent; it means their words are not straight. As it stands now all the states have rejected allocation for September on the basis of the fact that government has turned so-called fuel subsidy into first line charge that they want to remove N250billion for September as fuel subsidy. When have marketers become first line chargers? The other fundamental issue is that in this year alone the budget for fuel subsidy was N250billion. Now they have removed N250billion in just one month and yet they have not increased what they are importing and the price has not gone up internationally which tells you that the whole thing is a fraud, just for those who are milking us to continue to steal. Federal government must know the implication of the action they want to take. We feel it is not in the best interest of Nigerians and they must listen to the pulse of the people. We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder and this action government is proposing is like a time bomb that points to danger ahead. Government must weigh its option and tread cautiously. The poor masses are still dying instalmentally and what the FG wants to do may cause civil unrest. The truth is that Nigerians don’t want it because they know it’s not in their interest. What of the federal government’s insistence on implementation of the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF)? Sovereign Wealth Fund is another attempt by the government to set aside some money, which they will also do with what they like. Have we forgotten the excess crude account, how it was depleted. When President Yar’Adua died we had billions of naira in that account. How many months did it take and the entire thing was gone? You can see that the governor’s forum is saying that they cannot trust the FG with such funds. So if the governors are saying that they cannot trust the FG, how do you now expect Nigerians to trust the FG? How would you assess the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan in office so far? For me, I have not been disappointed except those who are ambushed by sentiments of geography, religion or whatever. It was clear that from the few months that Jonathan stayed as the Acting President, he lacked the needed competence to manage a country like Nigeria and his incompetence has shown in the last six months in the way the country has been handled. The way the country has been managed has left little to be desired and we have not seen a clear policy direction. We have seen the way the security situation has been badly mis-managed in the country. We have seen that the economy is not getting anywhere. We have a President that that does not face responsibility but one who is always giving alibi. Look at what happened on October 1 when MEND issued a threat that they were going to bomb the Eagle Square if there was any parade there. He decided to go and hold a ‘beer palour’ celebration inside the Villa, surrendering to merchants of terror. What should he have done? What he should have been done in that instance was either to cancel the entire celebration out rightly or say okay, all civilians stay off but all military chiefs, all security chiefs lets go to the Eagle Square and we have to secure the venue because if we can secure the Villa, we can secure the venue and must look this terrorists in the face and tell them that they cannot dictate to Nigerians how we will live our lives. If he had insisted that all security chiefs should mount surveillance there, nothing should have happened and then the terrorists could have gotten the message that they cannot dictate to us. Look at the way the country is going there is no development in any sector. You will just be hearing of billions being voted every week and nothing seems to be changing for better. And there is no clear direction on where the country is going. So what do you expect him to do? First the issue of security must be taken seriously. There has to be clear direction to show Nigerians that the leadership can secure this country. That is very important. In terms of the economy, infrastructure must be looked into. About petroleum issue, what we need to do is to fix our refineries and stop this nonsense of talking about landing cost. Niger Republic that just discovered oil, we hear, is building refinery. They will soon start exporting fuel to Nigeria. What is wrong in fixing our refineries with all the money that we have? President Jonathan needs to get his acts together. www.leadership.ng/nga/articles/8085/2011/11/11/fuel_subsidy_inflames_jonathan_buhari_row.html |
The punishment is very okay. It's not severe. She has been asked to sweep for 7 days. Do you want stealing to be encouraged? |
Ozin:Do a little resaerch before opening your mouth to talk. Buhari is not corrupt like your brother Jonathan and his PDP cohorts. |
The point of the fact is: the nation's refiniried does not have to be in private hands for it to function maximally. Likewise the Benue cement company. No sir, it most definitly doesen't. And it was completely criminal for OBJ to hand over the nation's refiniries to two men. Ina decent societies like Europe and US, such a President will be mad eforcefully resign or face impeachment. Poster, do you not know that Otedola and Dangote are part and parcel of Nigeria's problem; very central to the reason why our refinries are not working? Do you not know that viable national strategic parastatals which constitute our common wealth are systematically ruined so that they can be sold and aquired cheaply by same people or their accomplices in business who front for them? And really who gives a shit about the names. While I'm not against the names being published, that would not still validate the need to impoverish the people with incease in fuel price. If Jonathan and his cohorts are sincere and u want to deal with this cartel, cabals or whatever, why not not with fury, go ahead and put the refiniries in order; our rfiniries would supply all the fuel we need, hence there will be no need for importation, and need for subsidy will automatically disappear. Then the annual 1.3 trillion being spent annualy on subsidy(according to goverment can be diverted towards the development of infrastructure. Tell me, is that such an impossibilty. It's impossible bc the goverment is cabal and the cabal is goverment. Why? Without support of goverment, the cabal cannot do a thing. just like the agberos cannot be terrorising Lagos without the support of the Tinubu/Fashola Administration. what every youth and nIgeran citzen should be demanding without compromise from "our freind Jona" is tha he should go and fix the nation's refiniries. |
Poster, you are a big i.d.i.ot. Did you not go to school or what kind of a heading is that. if u know u wanted to ask a question, why not something like: Is Nigerian Brewery Promtions and car gifts for Real? And what makes you think anyone gives a Poo about convincing you? is not by force to start a thread. There is no car gifs for it. |
just like chaircover said, you talking of overseas; there are tens of thousands of kids growing up in Lagos who understand and can only speak English and the parents are so proud. It really baffles me. |
Beaf:Does this disgraceful self-actualised Jonthan's slowpoke actualy expect me to tackle concepts and reasonings with him? I have better things to do with my time. Skii: naijababe: |
naijababe:You are a good example of what I'm talking about; also of what texpette is also talking about. First I said revolutionary change not a revolution; and it means a complete departure from the usual practice, a state of enemity of the goverment in power with the former system of running goverment business, utilising state's resources. So what do you mean by "revolution my foot". Do you mean we don't need it or that Buhari/bakare presidency is not capable of doing this? And you beleive Jonathan will. Was I not right in saying we addicted to suffering, mediocrity (he's trying) etc Buhari shed tears. You think he faked it? You think a grown man, a military man shed tears for nothing. I give up. By the way, I am in my thirties. |
Men, such a pity; our youths of today walk with their brain under their feet. Anyone with half a brain can see this guy is contesting for President because he wants to bring about the much needed revolutionary change to Nigeria. That means that most Nigerian youths of today have no brain. They are incapable of discerning and choosing a leader who ready against all odds to face all the forces of corruption and evil men and bring change to Nigeria. It's sad to say, but the sufferings of many Nigerian youths may extend into their forties and even fifties. No problem, when 2015 comes, go ahead and once again vote for your clueless and charlatan Jonathan; and the the evil demonic PDP who will keep on getting fat from sucking your blood. It seems the youths can no longer make use of their own brain, but just follow popularPDP propangada. Imagine: Buhari is a terrorist; Buhari has no intergrity (are u serious!); he killed NYSC students. We are addicted to suffering and if Nairaland can be used a microcosm, I see no end in sight yet. Pathetic and brain dead nation. |

Mr President, don’t let us down By Rasheed Ojikutu Tuesday, 11 Oct 2011 I was not born rich, and in my youth, I never imagined that I would be where I am today, In my early days in school, I had no shoes, no school bag… My dear good people of Nigeria, I want all of you to know that I am one of you and I will never let you down. I want you to know that I will keep hope alive, ” With these emotion laden words, President Goodluck Jonathan declared his candidacy for the Peoples Democratic Party primary on September 18, 2010. By April 2011, Nigerians from all walks of life queued behind him at the polling stations to give him the mandate that he so desperately needed considering the exigencies of the moment. The rest, as they say, is now history. Placed on the plinth of his own words as shown above, one would want to ask “Is Mr President keeping hopes alive?” Certainly NO. Is he letting Nigerians down? He would, if he follows the economic blueprint of his Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to remove subsidy from petroleum products and increase tariff on a number of essential items of daily consumption which will further worsen the already precarious existence of the masses. Okonjo-Iweala is no doubt an economist of no mean achievement and her position at the World Bank is a testimony to her expertise in finance. However, the country, particularly, President Jonathan should tarry a bit before taking her economic arithmetic hook, line and sinker because textbook economics most times come with idealism rather than realism. This is coupled with the fact that the minister who had lived outside the shores of Nigeria for so many years may not be in tune with the actual situation on ground, hence, she could innocently burn the finger of the Jonathan’s administration through some inchoate policy initiatives. The intention of the Jonathan administration to raise the tariff on electricity and hike fuel prices may tally with the principles of Adam Smith, Karl Marx or Milton Friedman. The model of economy being introduced by Okonjo-Iweala may not differ markedly from the theories propounded by Martín de Azpilcueta of the School of Salamanca, but what are the empirical evidences that these principles would translate into the much desired benefits, when replicated in the lives of the masses of Nigeria. For a people that are already overtaxed, undernourished, overworked and under-remunerated by the economic misguidance and misjudgment of yesteryears, there could be no other inauspicious time than now to introduce such livelihood demeaning policies that would further pauperise the poor while further oiling the silky skin of the rich. The history of fuel price increase in Nigeria dates back to the military era. Between 1978 and 1999 when the civilian administration assumed office, the price of petrol was increased from 15kobo per litre in 1978 to 60kobo in 1990, 70kobo in 1992, N3.25kobo in 1993, N11.00 in the same year and by 1998 it was N20. The civilian administration of Olusegun Obasanjo took the baton and completed the insensitive marathonic increase from N22.00 in 2002 to N26.00 in 2003. Today, the pump price of petrol is N65.00 per litre. Other products like diesel and kerosene do not differ in price treatment as they are equally astronomical and outside the purview of the common man. The Nigerian who is regularly made to pay more at the gas station has a couple of questions to ask. Let it be clear first and foremost that the government in this case has no power beyond that bestowed on it by the people of Nigeria through the instrument of the constitution. The government as the custodian of our national purse sells the product, collects the revenue and disburses the money on behalf of the people of Nigeria. Therefore, it may not be out of reason to demand explanation on why, despite unparalleled price increase, public facilities are still dysfunctional. The problem was certainly not caused by Jonathan, but for a man who made promises to keep hope alive, the heart palpates at the insensitivity of his finance minister to the plight of Nigerians. Okonjo- Iweala should know that we have passed through this road before and that her reasons for wanting to increase the pump price of fuel is not new. The same story justified the price and tariff adjustments of yesteryears but the fact is that after every such price increase, there are no compensating effect on public facilities and the livelihood of Nigerians. Rather, on each occasion, the life of the common man nosedived far below what it was before the pump adjustment. Thanks to leakages in the pocket of the nation as a result of official corruption. Today, most Nigerians pay the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for services not rendered. After all, Nigerians generate their own electricity because there is hardly a home, no matter how poor, where there is no generator and yet, the same Nigerians pay more for diesel and petrol to fuel the engine. They pay more for kerosene to light their lantern. Same for education as most Nigerians today provide education for their children by sending them to private schools and other institutions outside the country because of the deplorable conditions of government-owned schools. Today, most Nigerians either purchase their water from water vendors, or get them from other improvised sources. There is hardly a home in Nigeria today where there is no well or borehole. This is because most public taps are dry. Yet, this is a country with abundant water. Roads have become death trap. In most cities, area boys repair roads with broken bricks while forcing motorists to part with money. Nigerians now provide more security for themselves through private security outfits than through the myriads of official security forces in the country. It stands to reason to argue that if all these are happening in the life of a man, then he wouldn’t be expected to live long. No wonder the life expectancy of a Nigerian is just 46 years. Recently a friend forwarded a text to me on my BlackBerry phone. The content reads: “Between 1450s and 1850s, over 400,000 Africans were forcibly carried away as slaves. Today, if a slave ship of one million capacity berths at Apapa port and calls for those who want to go voluntarily to the US or UK on slavery, the ship will not take one hour to be filled” I forwarded this text to my daughter on her Blackberry and her reply was “That’s true Dad>I don’t think it will take one hour to fill up the ship and there would be casualties because of rush”. There couldn’t be a better way of describing the current state of affairs in Nigeria than the words of these two people. The question is “what exactly is the essence of government and governance if it fails abysmally in the duties enumerated above?” Whither the hope! Now that a man who claims to know where the shoe pinches, because of his antecedent that was devoid of riches and affluence, is in charge, one would expect him to understand the plight of the pauperised and famished people of Nigeria and alleviate their sufferings rather than add to the problems. However, with a finance minister who professes to know it all while advocating additional heavy burden on the common Nigerian, there is no way Jonathan will not let Nigerians down. There is certainly no way the door of opportunities that lifted the President from a shoeless school boy to the first citizen of Nigeria would be open to the children of the poor. both of them, Ngozi and Sanusi, is it a difficult thing for them to outline a plan and convince Jonathan to set a 6-9 months deadline for making all our the refineries work and 18-24 months for building new ones. I thought that any seasoned and sincere economist will rather attack the root cause of a problem than treat the symptom. |
