ochallo: this is part of the reasons nigeria is so backward, i bet less than 10 people there would be able to speak fluent english, when they are supposed to be organise skill acquisition schemes , they are busy breaking kolanuts, the same thing we were doing before God brought the missionaries and development. yet some people refuse to develop. can these pictures be shown on CNN as a progressive development?
I think I can break your problems into 2 you are either seeking attention here or sick in the head. Who cares what CNN shows and who says only what CNN shows is right? Skill acquisitions scheme? If your school or employer cant help you on that then get it yourself. What the festival shows you is the ardent need to preserve our culture Mr CNN

akigbemaru: Obaje, while basking in emporia of a stupid glory, may I remind you that the Era of olobade is over and please let democracy take it coarse. We Yoruba are not happy with many of you OBas out there anymore, we believe you have lived pass your time. Many of you can be converted to Mayor and serve your four years term and if you did great, your people will reelect you again for another four years and after that back off and give another person a chance. The idea of you on throne forever does not jel well with the prosperity of your community, history will tell us that absolute power corrupts absolute people. You can ignore my warnings but guess what? I know nemesis will catch up with all of you kings out there, because modernity is making your values in society looks stupid.
"Those who fail to embrace changes and modernity often become relics of the past."
Are you kidding bruv? Have you taken your time to research monarchical system of even the world's most developed democracies? I think you need to go to Britain and tell Queen Elizabeth to abdicate her throne to suit your love for modernity. Democracy can always suitably be transient but Monarchy never can...the monarchs are meant to be permanent for cultural not political reasons dude.

Just asking o
Normally the first son should and is usually the heir to the throne. But in some cultures where selection of Monarch is based on divination, it's whoever the Ifa being the mouthpiece of the ancestors chooses that is installed the king. In the case of The Abolarin, I think Oba Adedokun was adjudged to be the most popular of the three sons of the late PA Abolarin and rumour has it that the immediate predecessor had chosen Oba Adedokun ahead of the first son for reasons unknown to any mortal. Abolarin's family is a very good family as the selection of the second son never caused any upheaval.

Oba Adedokun Abolarin is a rare gem
A man who left a very lucrative legal profession and decided to serve his kingdom
A Political Scientist and Lawyer of high standing
Raised in Ibadan in the remote Agugu Area, His Royal Highness, The Aroyikeye 1 passes for someone born and bred in the Windsor Castle
You need to have a conversation with the Monarch to realize that Aso Rock is the right place for Doksy
One of the few that combine being handsome to being intelligent
PA Abolarin must be smiling in the heaven seeing his second son preserving the culture of his beloved town
May your rein be long and prosperous Oba Adedokun
May the people of Oke Ila continue to be happy under your kingship

For me I will fly DANA as soon as their operations commence. I will relate their case to a time when armed robbery was prevalent in my Area. They just robbed my friend's house the previous day and every member of their family couldn't sleep in the house the following night. They went and slept in another house in the area not knowing that the house was next on the armed robber's register.....they became victims of robbery twice in two days grin I think DANA's management must have put their house in order now....my opinion though

Politics / Re: Are The Yoruba The Number One In Religious Tolerance? by Lanspower(m): 7:40am On Aug 25, 2012
@poster, you are somewhat correct. The Yorubas are so tolerant of various religious practices that hardly will you find a Yoruba family without a mix of religions especially Islam and Christianity in the Yoruba race. In primary schools in those days all students were exposed to both the teachings of Islam and Christianity that's why many Muslim pupils can say The Lord's prayer ( Baba wa ti n be lorun) offhand and Christians can recite Suratul Fathia (the first chapter in the Qur'an). Very many Muslims take their children to see Father Christmas during Xmas and Christians are always happy during Eid-Adhan called the big Salah.
Coming down to traditional religious practice, I know a brother called Luqman (a Muslim name) who used to be the Olobo Masquerade in Agugu Area Ibadan and I vividly remember Akin Obebe a Christian who used to be a masquerade too. All Yoruba Masquerades draw their followership from both Muslim and Christian populace.
The few religious disturbances we read in the newspapers from the South West in the recent time are attributable to the rot in our societal settings whereby certain set of misguided Muslims, Christians and Traditional believers deliberately create tensions in a blatant display of their arrogance. Nowadays we have masquerades who are high on marijuana and cause disturbances and thus invite reprisal attacks from religious fanatics of faulty Islamic and Christian orientation. On the average however, religious tolerance is much more visible and feasible in Yorubaland than in every other parts of Nigeria( I dont know about the whole word sorry!)

ikooko:
...but what is wrong in this comment that wanted your neck. I guess this is based on simple religion classification which has nothing to do with belief, so why the attack?
As far as am concerned, there are four major religion in nigeria: christianity, islam, traditional worshippers and the atheist. I have no objection to what you practice or combo of them as long as youre not forcing your belief on others. afterall we have religion holidays for the first two,why not others; that to me is not fair for us to make foreign/imported believes superior over ours while majority practice idol worshipping secretly.
This type of fracas cant occur during masqurade or orisa festival in abeokuta or during osun festival in osogbo or olojo festival in ife.
my view is from cultural/tradition point or view. religion fanatics should learn to respect other religions apart from theirs.

Dude lemme educate you a little. The Oloolu Masquerade in Ibadan traditionally should not be seen by women. However in those days when there was real Oloolu, the masquerade nor its followers never chased or beat women like the present day. There used to be a Mask which Oloolu wore and any woman who saw the mask either died immediately or got afflicted with a dreadful illness capable of taking her life else they appeased to the deity in Oloolu's compound in Ode-Aje Ibadan. Historical oral tradition has it that Oloolu used to be powerful that on wearing the mask, he could sense the presence or nearness of a woman and at that time he usually said "ogbo n run" connoting that something strange was happening. Rumour has it that the mask was sold cheaply to some white historians but I can confirm that I witnessed Oloolu's outings more than 5 times and he never wore no mask but put on the traditional Aso Oke and on none of these 5 times did he sense the presence of women.
While I am not supporting that Oloolu shouldn't have gone to Opoyeosa as warned by Islamic faithful in the area, I would have advised the man in the capacity of Oloolu never to disobey coz it is an open secret that the potency of the family's tradition which was highly feared in the past has disappeared and that Muslims will leave no stone unturned to fight for what they believe in. Meanwhile, the Muslims that attacked Oloolu were not guilty cos at this age nothing should restrict the free movement of women not even a tradition that has had its values and virtues sold out.

Romance / He Wants To Ditch Her After 7 Years by Lanspower(m): 3:49pm On Jun 11, 2011
I've been dating a girl for 7 years but the relationship seems to be moving towards impossibility. In the first 2 years things were moving on fine until we began to see each other's bad side. I was the first to discover that she was cheating though I never caught her red handed except for her strange movements, suspicious phone calls/SMS and the fact that I contacted an STI from her which the nurse who treated me said she could have been infected in the toilet. My own sin that got revealed to her was that she caught me smoking cigarrette which got her upset and I promise to quit (though I'm taking one as I type now). I must confess that I have very limited trust in her and the last time I could beat my chest in her defence was in the first two years after which I became suspicious of her in anything she does. As a little boy I had always dreamt of getting married to a Yoruba girl who understands Hausa Language (I cant say precisely why I prefer that but it has always been what I cherished) However I have never been lucky to meet anyone who has that my self-preferred quality including my girl friend of 7 years.
Last year, I went to obtain a Masters Form from my University and I met this girl through one of my juniors in my school days. The girl was in her final year, she is 23. I liked the babe personally and I dont know why she got very well along with me that we became lovers without either of us asking each other out. Guess what, she is a Yoruba and she speaks impeccable Hausa. Apart from being a virgin, this girl is moderately beautiful and seemingly cool-headed. At first I thought it was mere normal dating until it gets stronger. The babe is from a town where they hardly give their daughters in marriage to outsiders. Without my knowledge, the girl had engaged her parents in strong battle of allowing her to marry from outside. At a point, her parents called and told me that it was a case of disappointment and maltreatment which some outsiders subjected their girls in the town to in the past that made marrying an outsider a sacrilege and they are afraid I may do the same to their daughter. Now the girl is rounding off her NYSC thinking of getting hooked shortly after service. I have looked for several reasons to ditch my 7 years girlfriend which I am only pitying for being with me for such long years and for the age that is not really much on her side. My calculation is that my 7 years girl has got to go for her HND and NYSC, she can still find someone. My new girl is in the last stage of her NYSC and as far as I know she has no one but me, I therefore fear that she might not meet a guy easily having left the stages where there is a high chance of meeting one's soulmate. Besides, I love this girl and I think that my marriage to her can help correct the wrong impression they have against outsiders in their town, the failure of which will further prove that outsiders dont deserve their daughters. I hope to return to Nigeria by the end of this year and I have to make a choice before my return. As I write, no one is as confused as I am. Pls help!
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Ike Uche Survives, Kalu Goes Down by Lanspower(m): 11:02pm On May 21, 2011
The 2010-2011 La-Liga Season ended tonight with a tough battle for survival among the teams at the lower part of the table. For Almeria, the 8-1 mauling by Real Madrid was just an unnecessary injury as their relegation fate was sealed last week. For Ike Uche's Zaragoza, it is a night of celebration as they were saved by 1-2 victory over Levante with their both goals coming from G. Fernadez. At the end of La-liga Season for 2010-2011, Barcelona continued their slave trade in the leage caging even the almighty Mourinho's Real Madrid. Depotivo, Harcules and Almeria have all gone down and would play their football at Second Tier of Spanish League next season. Congrats IKe, take heart Kalu!

I stumbled on this story on http://uk.health.lifestyle.yahoo.net/is-sex-good-for-your-health.htm and I felt it's some good news. Check it out!

Seven ways sex is good for your health

Don’t worry about the calories in those Valentine's Day chocolates – a proper celebration in the bedroom can help keep you in shape.
In fact, sex can benefit your health in many ways. Here are seven reasons to give and get a little love – not just this special day, but any time.
Good for the heart
Sex is good for your heart. Like any physical exertion, sex is a form of cardio-exercise, which gets your heart pumping faster and helps it stay in shape. What's more, studies have shown that men who have sex two or more times per week cut their risk of a fatal heart attack by half.
Helps you lose weight
Like any form of exercise, sex helps you lose weight. Having sex for 30 minutes can burn off 85 calories. To put that in perspective: 15 minutes on the treadmill could burn up to 200 calories; 42 of these half-hour sessions, then, could shave a pound off your weight.
Boosts your immune system
While it's possible to contract a wide range of diseases, both from sex and from simple contact with others, safe sex between healthy partners can make you better equipped to fight illness.
Those who have sex once or twice a week have been shown to have higher levels of immunoglobulin A or IgA, an antibody which helps protect you from respiratory diseases like the cold and flu.
Don’t go overboard, though – in studies, those who had sex three or more times a week had the lowest levels of antibodies.
Reduces the risk of prostate cancer
For younger men, sex reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers have found that men in their 20s who had five or more ejaculations per week were one third less likely to develop the cancer in later life. Although they found no such correlation for older men, you could try to prove them wrong.
Relieves stress
There's a medical explanation for the mood boost sex gives you. The brain releases endorphins during and after sex, and these neurotransmitters create a feeling of euphoria while masking the negative effects of stress.
Researchers have also found that sex lowers your blood pressure, which is good for your health and allows you to better keep your cool in stressful situations.
It relieves pain
Endorphins and lower blood pressure also mean that sex relieves pain. Endorphins are released during sex because of the heightened levels of the hormone oxytocin in your body. This has been known to alleviate arthritic and menstrual pain, among other things. Lower blood pressure can also help relieve migraines.
It helps you sleep
In addition to relieving stress and pain, the oxytocin generated during sex helps you sleep better. Sex relaxes you, promoting deeper, more restful sleep. What more do you need?

Man on rescue mission falls to death
NewsJan 27, 2011
By evelyn usman & ifeanyi okolie
A 27- year-old man was Wednesday night killed, after he was flung down from the minaret of Ijesha-Tedo central mosque, following a failed attempt to rescue a mother of three that was trapped there.
The trapped woman said to have strayed all the way from Ikotun area of Lagos, was discovered to be a lunatic. How she found her way right to the top of the minaret unnoticed, still remains a mystery to be unraveled by the Police.
The deceased identified simply as Ikechukwu, was said to be on his way home at about 11pm, in the company of his friend. However, on arriving at the mosque, they were attracted by a crowd of inquisitive on-lookers who were watching how the trapped woman would find her way down.
Eye witness said the late Ikechukwu quickly pulled off his shirts following a bet of N1000 on whoever was able to get the woman down.
Effort by his unidentified friend to dissuade Ikechukwu from taking the risk, reportedly fell on deaf ears as he also pulled his shoes and started climbing on a make-shift ladder to the top of the minaret.
But the unexpected occurred, as on reaching the top of the minaret, the trapped woman reportedly shook the make-shift ladder, causing Ikechukwu to lose his grips and landed on the ground with his head. He reportedly died on the spot.
When vanguard arrived the scene Thursday, the woman was still sighted on the minaret, with a mammoth crowd still watching .
The crowd which greeted the spectacular scene, prevented vehicular access along the route, causing policemen attached to Ijsha-Tedo division to be diverting vehicles from both ends of the road.
The lunatic, was however rescued at about 2pm Thursday by a combined team of fire fighters and policemen.

As for me, GEJ never earns my support and pity. His presidential ambition is driven by sycophancy. I'm sure the likes of Ekwueme, Nnamani and all other great people in Igbo land are aware that GEJ will eventually doom the Nation that's why they insist on zoning. Atiku should pick Donald Duke or Amechi and finish the opportunist!
